A group to discuss topics relating to visual impairment, everyday life and education from a parents perspective. It is open to parents of visually impaired children or children at risk of sight loss. It is also open to visually impaired adults who would like to support parents and advocate for visually impaired children, raise positive awareness and share ideas. But I am particularly hoping to attract people from the UK and create a place where parents can support each other independently and privately. Personally, I feel we are very behind America, where blind people are advocating for young children to use canes for example. It is practically unheard of here and braille seems to be avoided if a child can manage even a little bit of print. Personally,I am fed up of feeling like I am being 'controversial', by looking into what is best for my child, rather than waiting to be told what to do.

NFB, in the USA is the worlds largest organisation OF blind people and I would like to encourage people to join them, as I feel they are decades in front of organisations in the UK for the blind and I would love the UK to be more aware of what they are achieving.

I would like this to be a place, we can raise awareness, share ideas, support and find solutions. Parents are children's first teachers and shouldn't stop teaching and supporting their child just because they have special needs, yes, professionals need to have input, but we need to remain the expert on our child, and have the back up from other parents so we can feel confident in doing this, even when we are seen as a 'trouble maker', for asking questions. Lets teach and support our children with real tips and solutions to reduce blindness from being a disability, and show our child that they do not need to hide their sight loss and that being visually impaired/blind is respectable. lets encourage them to take responsibility for themselves and learn the skills they need to be independent, successful and happy.
