Dan Waters' suggestion to look in the linotype specimen book is a good one --
many of the old specimen books have examples.

You might consider just a simple rule border, single or double hairline, or
rule with corner ornaments. The books of SF printer John Henry Nash
frequently had pages sub-divided and framed by rule.

Dover has several clip-art books that show borders. I'd also check out Bruce
Rogers' Paragraphs on Printing to consider the gorgeous delicate hanging
borders he did for The Pierrot of the Minute by Ernest Dowson. It's my
favorite such invention.

As Rogers did, you might consider subduing the border by using a muted second
color. A very soft color could tone down even a heavy frame to the right
proportions, to subdue the repeated weight of the frame, keeping it in the
background, while the text is present in black....

Bryan

Ah, not familiar with Kast & Ehinger

Superior black printing ink?

But to reply to your question. I've found that stone lithographic
inks work well. I use Handschy and Charbonnell. Loads of pigment,
stiff, sticky, the usual. I bought the special Midway ink offered
from Mr Boxcar and will be trying that out on a forthcoming project.

All best

The midway ink is exceptional, but it is not a stock item and made only in 25
pounds to order. It is very stiff and I add a drop or two of boiled linseed
oil for large coverage printing, straight for type.

Well, now I'm really curious about why I'm getting such good results with
thinner, runnier offset inks than I am with the stiff letterpress inks.
Sounds like others are liking the stiffer inks better. Does it have to do
with my presses? Papers?

Another question: I have to replace my Microtek scanner. I don't want to buy
another of their products again (long story having to do with lousy
support). Am leaning toward HP 3570 cxi, as I have been impressed with HP's
support in the past, and this one has a transparency adaptor and 1200 dpi
optical resolution. Does anyone have experience with this or similar
scanners, or any other recommendations?

Thanks.

Thank-you Harold,

I have a small gang-up order that someone else is putting through right now.
But a large book of wood-engravings is depleting my supply very quickly so I

Is the recipe no. B-17421? If so contact me off list as to payment.

Thanks to those who recommended Agfa. Unfortunately, Afga is no longer in

Dear friend,

Do you have a virus checker on your machine? If so, you should check it.
Someone to whom I have recently sent email has a virus (or worm, perhaps the
famous W.32.klez worm) that causes phony messages to be sent to random
individuals with the people on your mailing list as sender.

For more information about klez, see

Yes, I sent the message below, and yes, the web site is real. It contains
the actual numeric address for the Zoomtown site. And yes, there are plenty
of other sites that have information. The important thing is to check your
computer frequently. Another step is to stop using Microsoft email products,
as those seem to be the most frequently targetting by work and virus
designers.

Katie Harper's looking for a new scanner but:

In the August 2002 issue of PC Magazine (pages 126-136), highly
recommended are the HP ScanJet 5400c (2400 dpi, about $200) and the
Canon CanoScan N1240U (1200 dpi, about $150).

The HP ScanJet 7400c (about $500) is suggested in a sidebar. The
Epson Perfection 2450 Photo (about $400) has a built-in transparency
unit, a feature I think you had mentioned as desirable or essential.

Perhaps the entire review, with comparison charts and sidebars, is on
the PC Magazine website:

I bought a HP ScanJet 7400c a little more than a year ago and I
just love it for web-scans. But for going to print, I am sticking
with my Scitex (Now Creo) EverSmart Supreme; it does the best
colour I can produce on my Indigo presses, or going CTP on my
Printware-M or to film for conventional platemaking on my Agfa
Avantra 45.

I use it for everything from t-shirts (I send screen printing out,)
to large colour catalogs.

Scanners fall in three main categories 1. Desktop scanners for the recipe
collector 2. Desktop Scanner for the Professional, 3. Drum Scanners for the
high-end color and detail critical work.

Of the three types there are quality scanners for each level of work.

Agfa, Microtek, and HP provide good quality scanners for the amateur and
professional alike

In choosing a scanner there are a few things to keep in mind. But primarily
of interest will be what your final use of a scan is going to be. Will it be
for web? Will it be for color laser out put? will it be for scanning line
art? will you be outputting to polymer? Will you be printing 4-color offset?
If you are primarily planning on printing for letterpress, one of the
midrange scanners provided by the above companies should be more than
adequate.

Some even come with the ability to scan slides or chromes. My rule for
scanning any type of transparency is it should always be scanned from a
high- end drum scanner if you are going for any serious kind of enlargement
or color-specific quality. Abd if at all possible oil mounting is the method
of choice. Scanning chromes or slides on a flatbed should only be done FPO.
I am sure there are some who would argue with this... With about 9 years
pre-press and scanning/color-correction/retouching experience I have always
followed this rule...never use a flatbed for final scanning of any
transparency. Period!

With that in mind...I have a $300 Microtek sitting here next to me. With the
correct amount of time and preparation I am able to pull of some very good
quality scans from reflective artwork. The scans are as good as the $900
Microtek and the $1400 Agfa.

If you know Photoshop as a production tool (Curves, Gamma, under coating,
highlight, mid and shadow input settings and of course sharpening) you
should be able to get really good scans off of any good desktop scanner.
Never go for any of the scanners in the FREE to 199 price range unless you
really know Photoshop as a production tool, and have the ability to fix
garbage once it¹s digital.

I am putting together the manuscript for a new monograph that I will
be releasing next spring. This will be produced in the same format as
the second edition of _Printing digital type on the hand-operated
flatbed cylinder press_.

The text consists of several deliberations:

the application of letterpress compositional strategies in the
digital environment (this springs from an examination of the
composition of typographers such as Saul Marks),

designing for the requirements and restrictions of letterpress
technology and operations,

configuring and optimizing digital type for letterpress printing with
photopolymer plates.

A number of comparative visual examples accompany the text. Some of
this material has appeared in various articles but is here gathered
together for the first time.

For lack of imagination, the working title is _Beyond the Composing
Stick_!?! If you would like to be put on the mailing list for receipt
of the prospectus for the monograph (at a pre-publication price)
please forward your address to me OFF-LIST. The prospectus will go
out toward the beginning of next year.

Thanks for this. Someone had mentioned Icefields early on and I used
it for a just a short while but then I had a horrible system crash
and it did not survive. Even when reinstalled. Just sort of sits
there upon opening. Some remnant bugger in the the system file gone
bad, won't copy over, and I just have't been able to identify it.
Have the same problem with Ofoto scanning software. That was great
stuff, and I dearly miss it. Another company long gone.

I'll check out the Rastus.

I downloaded the Rastus Demo yesterday and gave it a quick try.

It's easy to use, but my cursory tests yielded an odd moire-like
pattern in the dots, a subtle but noticeable succession of
checker-like dark and light areas throughout the image, most evident
at high resolutions or when viewed from a distance. I'd be curious to
know if anyone else has tried this, and what their experience has
been.

As an alternative, does anyone have a favorite "mezzotint" plug-in
for Photoshop?

You can see photos of a specimen of a new version of Sabon being printed
from photopolymer plates at this site:

The type design work has been done by Jean-François Porchez, a well known
French designer, for Linotype. (The site's text is also in French). This new
version was announced at the ATypI typography conference just concluded in
Rome.

I'm printing a plate using only clear overprint varnish on a dark, brick red
cover stock, and am finding that the usual deep impression that the clients
so love is causing the varnish to apparently bleed through to the back of
the paper. This is on my C&P Craftsman, by the way I have not had this
happen before with varnish, but have not used this paper before, either. I
tried letting the paper dry, and this seems to help, but the ghost never
quite goes away.

Has anyone ever had this happen and do you know if it can be remedied?

HI Katie,
You don't say what kind of paper it is, so it's hard to evaluate what's
happening. Seems to me it would have to be a very porous paper for the
varnish to go through the sheet. (Or way too much pressure and maybe too much
varnish). Are you sure you are not just getting an off-print from the sheet
below it in the pile?

Only other solution that comes to mind would be to use less varnish. Probably
less would be just about as effective for coating the image area since you
are not trying to cover the paper color like ink, only putting a sheen on it.

Well, I have discovered that it was not the varnish after all, but rather it
was coming from the tympan paper, which is rather old, I suspect (it came
with my equipment so is of unknown age and quality). I was able to fix the
problem by a draw sheet from under the tympan and putting it on top to
absorb any leaking oil. I would have to change that after about 40
impressions or so, however. I have not had this particular problem before,
but it doesn't surprise me. If the tympan paper is old, perhaps the oil or
wax in it starts to leech out or something. I should probably use mylar or
acetate, but this is so much more economical...

Dear all
It seems to be the time of year for updating websites - do have a look at
ours www.oldstilepress.com where we have listed new titles and works in
progress which are very nearly ready - in fact one of them should be in
time for Oak Knoll but then does one ever dare say such a thing . . .
Hope to see some of you in New Castle - but communicating like this does
bring us all closer - in spite of the distances whether over land or the
Atlantic.
Best wishes
