Armina,
those are some really nice photos. Two questions: 1. do you have higher res versions and, if so, 2. can we use them (with proper credits and captions) in our book? 3. what typeface is that? (Palace Script?)

The Ladies of Letterpress invite you to join us at the Ladies of
Letterpress Conference, August 2-5, 2012, Asheville NC.

The Ladies of Letterpress is a professional organization of
letterpress printers with over 1500 members worldwide. Building on the
outstanding success of last year’s conference, we are organizing the
second annual Ladies of Letterpress conference for August 2-5, 2012 to
be held in downtown Asheville, North Carolina.

Use it or Lose it: Preservation and Innovation in Letterpress Printing
is the only modern-day conference devoted entirely to letterpress
printing. Plans for the Ladies of Letterpress Conference are well
underway with an impressive lineup of speakers and panelists including
John Barrett (Letterpress Things), Harold Kyle (Boxcar Press), Kat
Feuerstein (Gilah Press), and Laura Zinger, director of the
letterpress documentary Proceed and Be Bold. The Lone Oak Press owner
Abigail Rorer, engraver, book-artist, and printer, will present the
keynote address.

The conference will again focus on topics important to the letterpress
community: how to run a letterpress printing business, working with
stores and retailers, choosing the best paper for the printing
purpose, innovative methods of letterpress printing, and
sustainability in printing practices. Along with a diverse array of
panel presentations, attendees will enjoy an expanded Printers Fair
and Sponsor Exhibit and networking opportunities, a tour of Asheville
print shops, a screening of the documentary Proceed and Be Bold
followed by a Q&A with Laura Zinger and Amos Kennedy, and even a dance
party where you can show off your best printer-dance moves!

Hi PJay,

Yes, we’ve only just become aware of this in the last two days.

We sell ‘The Chase Base’ and have been doing so on and off for the last couple of years on eBay.  It is only recently that we have got around to creating a website.

We currently supply 4 sizes of ‘The Chase Base’ and also welcome Custom sized orders.

We have a ‘The Chase Base’ that is slightly smaller than the ‘Chase Base’ sold by Lyme Bay Press and measures 177.8mm x 254.0mm for £150 this price includes free shipping and no VAT, we also sell a slightly larger ‘The Chase Base’ than the ‘Chase Base’ measuring 203.2mm x 304.8mm for £185, again no VAT and includes shipping.  From what I can make out the ‘Chase Base’ from Lyme Bay Press is 280mm x 210mm for £139 + VAT (£29.74) + Shipping (£9.70) = £178.44.

Yes that price comparison looks right. Obviously that's the cost to make these. I posted a link on the suppliers list for the plate making for Lyme Bay - you could do the same.

Good luck with this anyway!

Back last fall, I contemplated discontinuing the "Letterpress Printers of the World" website that I started collecting information for back in the Fall of 2004 and brought online in 2005.  Since 2007, I have done little with the updating, etc, as I had lost the proprietary source code for the website that my web authoring software at the time used for creating the site's HTML & CSS files...

Last fall, a few other people on these lists offered to help me update the site, and we talked via email a few times, but nothing ever developed, and I was not going to be the one to constantly push others to help redesign the site, so I just dropped it for a few months....  Now that I have been working on multiple other websites for my High School alumni association and various class years, I decided to take that experience and redesign the website using an interactive database and WordPress as the basis for the site's backbone.

I have only put a few hours work into the redesign at present, but it is ready to fly and have my fellow letterpress printers add their information to the database so I can more information in the database to continue to tweak the displays, etc.

I HAVE NOT AND WILL NOT copy any of the information from the old site onto the new site, so if you were on the old site and wish to continue your listing on the new site, you will have to go to the new site and enter your information.  I have left both sites open and available so you can review your old listing before entering your new information.  You can even cut & paste from one site to the other if you bring them up in two windows or tabs :-)

The old site is still at: http://www.letterpressprinters.org

The new site is located at" http://www.letterpressprinters.org/wp

So, check things out and update or enter your information at your convenience :-)

Thanks Lance!!

Good luck with the new WordPress, I think it's the way to go.

I'm in the midst of a difficult review and revisioning of slowprint.com, as well, and have pretty much decided to go with Wordpress as well.

I've run my own web hosting, domains and DB for a couple of decades...

Never easy, though ;-)

Yeah, this is extraordinarily odd. Three of them suddenly! I assume no one has
trademarked anything, then again, not that knowledgeable about UK law.

One thing for sure, there is no valid patent on that type of flat base. Similar
ad hoc bases have been made for many, many years.

It was 12 years ago that I thought I invented a new system of bases, and optimistically printed "Patent pending" on the top of the Boxcar Base. But shortly thereafter I realized that (in addition to whatever ad hoc systems were previously used) BASF had been selling a very similar system for decades. It actually comforted me to know that adhesive-on-gridded-aluminum was an established solution to mounting plates. Also, that I wouldn't have to pay a lawyer to actually patent the base. Money was in very short supply, as I was learning the hard way that not all aluminum alloys or all machinists could manufacture these to the required tolerances.

I eventually removed the "Patent pending" boast from the surface. Trademarks are another matter and I'm happy that no other manufacturer has coined their base a "Boxcar Base." :)

Thanks
Harold

As far as I can tell the only other significant alternative flatbase, the
Patmag, which Patrick Reagh brought out in 1990/1991 ?, could have been
patented, though I doubt it was. The name was registered, though not
trademarked. I believe these are still available.

You might be able to find a manual online which would indicate the
correct bulb.

Not sure why you are attempting to back expose KF95s. They don't need
this; they are back exposured during their manufacture, most sheet
photopolymer is.

Hi Gerald/Rick

I was told by boxcar way back to back expose these for 25 seconds to harden the back. I was usually ordering the 94 FL but they ran out so I had to get these.
It is strange that on the data sheet there is no mention of back exposing? I'll have to test one out later. As for the manual for the machine I am having a hard time tracking
one down. It is very old and I think the company has been out of business for quite a while. I will try out the Sylvania bulbs as recommended by Rick. The replacement
I was trying to use was only 8 watt and these are 25 watts.

Thanks for the info!

Cheers

You might check the archives here. There might be something.

In regard to the back exposure. I think this is a workaround proffered for the
KF152, not the KF94. The KF152 is a bit soft for its thickness I guess. Not sure
why it is even offered for letterpress applications.

I managed to get the original bulb type which is Philips TL8W/05 67 Made in Holland. I tried to replace the bulb with a Hitachi F8T5 8 watt bulb.
While the exposure seems to work there is an issue with cleaning all of the polymer (not a clean floor) perhaps these KF 95's do not need the back exposure
after all?? with the original bulbs I have been back exposing and then exposing according to boxcars instructions. Maybe the newer bulbs are more powerful thus causing
this problem to occur. I will test a strip tomorrow without back exposure.

On another note I maybe looking at upgrading the machine. Does anyone know of anywhere to buy a reasonably priced platemaker. I do not have any contracts with apple
or anything like that so something used or refurbished would be great.

Thanks again for all of the advice so far!!

Hi Ian

I would try to stay with the original specs re the light bulbs. I run TLK 40W/10-R UVA (made by Light Emission Technologies) on my A&V Orbital. Takes a good long time to run them down. Whatever bulb you use you can get them in bulk at good pricing from Atlanta Light Bulbs (there is a link to them on site). Stay away from back exposing, you are just adding another variable to the equation.

Rather than buy another used machine why not just upgrade what you have? new bulbs all around, new brush, new ballasts. That should pretty much take care of the major issues regarding exposure and washout. Best ballasts are Rocket 5s. They are fairly inexpensive. Holy Grail according to A&V. Not had any problems with them. Best to replace all though especially if they are old. Rocket 5s feed two bulbs at once so some rewiring might be in order.

If you have a dirty floor that could be a combo problem of exposure and washout being out of sync. Best solution. Get your exposure to spec with the Gray Scale then slowly increase the washout time until the floor is clean and the relief is not undercutting. Should be smooth sailing, day after day after day, once these are in sync.

Here's a nice little letterpress clip I came across today
http://vimeo.com/35688592#

It loads a bit slowly, so if you're impatient you can click the "HD" symbol off and it will load faster in lower resolution

Thank you very much, Steve. I think this is the film I'm going to show my
friends when they wonder what exactly it is that I do.
