For those of you interested, and don't already know the cause:

The LETPRESS list was locked down late Thursday due to excessive message
traffic. A lively discussion on copyright law pushed the list over the 125 per
day message limit, and it went into some sort of a lock down. From what I have
been able to determine, someone at the University of New Brunswick (host site
for LETPRESS) needs to release the list so it start functioning again. All
messages that have been sent and not distributed should be sent out at that
time.

I have sent two email messages to Terry Oakes, who is the "list owner", but have
not received a response as of yet. (Terry can be a little hard to get ahold of
at times.) I also just left an email message with the IT department at UNB, so
hopefully someone there will be able to reset things and get the list restarted
(hopefully before Monday...)

Just saw a posting for a floor model C&P on DC's Craigslist. Do a search if you
are in the area. Good luck!

I hate to have to tirelessly remind folks here, please DO NOT post
referrals to letterpress equipment for sale that is NOT YOUR OWN.

sfletterpress will be happy to accomodate your postings, we will not.

You will be put on moderated status for violation of this one tiny
little request.

Why? I get complaints from sellers, who refer the complaints to Yahoo
(and they don't like this).

I don't have enough time in the day to deal with this crap. Thank you.

Please see our onsite File on Group Site Netiquette.

Yeah, Letpress imploded last night. Phenomenal. Quite the amazing co-intwined
discussions. Reaching the absolute heights of stupidity, very engaging. I
entered the fray late, sorry to hear later responses will be sent out :—)

Amazing.

I wondered why all of a sudden everyone dropped the copyright thing;
it didn't seem like the character of the list to just let it go. Ha!

Gerald, et al,

Took whole day to realise most netters want me to ask first before sharing with
non-netters. I have been asking permission but need to do it consistantly. I
learnt a lot lasterday.

I don't have a GED yet, but am learning much more about this. Since material is
posted to the whole group like one would speak to a group in an auditorium, then
I think it prudent, wise to ask permission thusly to the whole group to share
with non-netters. After all, I might rise from my seat and ask the speaker if I
may quote all the person said for the local weekly.

And besides, it shows the whole group, on the net or in the auditorium, that I
am asking for permission, and it may encourage others to grant permission.

I'm glad to hear from you and your considerations. Been a bit of water over the
bridge between us regarding this but, seriously, there is no such thing as a
non-netter anymore. Your publication does not exist because some folks are not
able to access the internet, it exists because of what it is. I don't care that
you reprint stuff that you probably shouldn't, that's just you; and it sort of
is what makes The Printer unique and endearing in the end. Do your thing.

Hi Folks:

Last year at Maker Faire, I spoke with someone demonstrating letterpress
printing and he mentioned that there are services available that will cut a
letterpress plate from a computer file. I'd like to learn more about that.
Does anyone have information about the process, cost and suppliers of that
service? Would this service be available for smaller presses such as the
C&P Pilot?

Thanks in advance.

Yeah,

I did my best to stay out of the discussions, but couldn't resist a couple
comments later in the evening just before the lock down.... Hopefully
someone at UNB will get things fixed ASAP. Here is the latest message I
got back from the ListServ when trying to post a message:

"The distribution of your message dated Thu, 29 Oct 2009 23:00:35 -0400 with
subject "Daily Message Limit Hit for LETPRESS (125 messages/day)" has been
postponed because the LETPRESS list is held. No action is required from you.
Your message will be reprocessed automatically once the list owner releases
the list."

The archives are still up and running, so anyone who wants to see what all
the hub-bub was about that closed down the LETPRESS list, check out the
archives at: https://listserv.unb.ca/archives/letpress.html (You do need to
register for the list and log in to view, however).

Hi Graham

Not sure how we can address this here, but I did check out the thread on
sfletterpress. Seems covered.

Not sure if Mark is referring to photopolymer plate processors or
photomechanical engravers but we have most of the known letterpress related
suppliers of both listed in the Links section here. And would welcome more if
anyone was so inclined.

There are others but.........
I do not know if they work on photopolymer for letter presses. I think they are
made for offset and flexo plates. But, isn't a flexo plate the same as a
letterpress plate (Toyobo Printtight)? Now that I think about it......isn't an
offset plate the same as Toyobo KM152 plate, metal backed?

Please let me know as I would like to look into one as well.

Steve

I don't know of any CTP yet configured for letterpress specifications.

No, letterpress specs are a very small latitude in the range of photopolymer
plate possibilities. Not the same as flexography.

An offset plate the same as a Toyobo KM152 steel-backed photopolymer plate?
Maybe, by a long stretch of the imagination.

Still, a plate is a plate, by definition, is it not? We live in a time where
everything is relatively the same and thus the same.

So, why are there so many problems?

This comment caught me by surprise. There are several systems that use
lasers to ablate a carbon mask on the plate before processing. Do you not
consider these CTP?

For instance:
http://www.integre.com.tr/index.php?option=com_docman&task=doc_view&gid=6&Itemid\
=37(167K
PDF)

BASF and Toyobo among others make ablative letterpress plates for these
systems. They are expensive and not used much (if at all) within our
community.

Thanks
Harold

Hi Harold

Yes, I've processed these, but for a client using flexography, not letterpress.
I haven't seen any CTP letterpress plate specs (and appropriate plate
thicknesses) that would be of use for that all important "within our community."

Letterpress CTP plates are indeed available, and with the same specs as we
use. KF95 plates and KM95 plates are presently made in a version with an
ablative mask, as are the BASF WFH 95 (or whatever). I know that Toyobo was
willing to add an ablative mask to any of their letterpress plates upon
request. These cost roughly 10% more than conventional plates, sometimes
more. Because of the costs of the material (and also the 6-figure equipment
cost) which we'd have to pass along to our customers, we have not invested
in CTP technology quite yet.

Thanks

Tipoitalia 2 gives a lot of attention to numbers. Compared with letters there is
no doubt that these are a minor part of the typographic scene, but there is also
no denying that on a par with letters they have their rightful place alongside
the alphabet. Here we discuss the application of numbers on Italian clock dials
and house numbers where due consideration for architectural circumstances is a
necessity.

The Tipoteca Italiana has kindly printed an exclusive insert of very expressive
wood type numbers. Another insert prepared by Enrico Tallone and printed by him
in letterpress is part of the article on Alberto Tallone's type – designed in
the late 1940s, for the Tallone books – following a typographic tradition that
goes back to the Renaissance.

As in the first issue of Tipoitalia, the types chosen for the texts are the
products of Italian designers or interpretations of historical Italian models.
Types designed by some young and talented Italians are especially noteworthy and
we are grateful to them for making these available to us.

More info and PDF spread pages are available at www.tipoitalia.it

Anyone have any thoughts on how to dismantle a 10x15 Windmill?

Can a person carry the parts that are dismantled? for example- the table on the
right and the circular fly wheel?

Why do people put these in basements???????????????????

The cost of moving is very prohibitive.
What is the scrap value on this machine if a scrap yard were to come and buy it?

Does anyone have a used foil attachment for one?

Thanks
Steve

We recently got a Windmill - and now we have to transport it into our new
location. It will cost us almost 20% of what we paid for it, as we need to
have a special truck. We asked whether it can be brought into pieces - and
the reply was: absolutely no. Because, being a machine from the 60's, once
you dismantle it, no one can guarantee you that the parts will fit exactly
in place, after taking their respective shape from working more than 40
years in the same relative positions. Without knowing too much mechanics, I
tend to agree with the our seller.

Best regards,
Ion

The best you can do is remove the flywheel, which will then allow you to
remove the "table" on the front which holds the paper feed and delivery
sections. These parts are not exactly easy to remove but they are possible.
You're still left with two very heavy castings which are not suitable for
carrying. I can describe the process required for this if you'd like, and it
should print fine afterwards because everything's pinned in place.
Incidentally, I support a constitutional amendment to prohibit presses from
basements.

Hope this helps,
Harold

It does not sound like something I would want to do, that's for sure.

It is possible to pay an exorbitant amount to get the things moved,
that's for sure.
I paid Mr Regan about $2K to move a 10x15 windmill from Chicago to
Dubuque, about 160 miles.

And then I paid a local carrier $500 to move another Windmill PLUS a
Mielhe V-36 from Minneapolis (more or less) to Dubuque.

Of course, then I had to get it off the truck myself ;-)
There are advantages to being in a warehouse!

Would not like to move one out of a basement, that's for damned sure.

AFAIK scrap is not what it was a couple of years ago...

good luck!

That would have to be the subterranean rider on the First Amendment, eh?

Or a prohibition on Underground Lit?

Good point. Underground Lit will now become Ground Level Concrete Slab Lit.
Seriously, if you care about preserving the craft, don't put your press
below ground without a way to get it out. Or build a wall around the press
after you move it in. I've had to move presses in these circumstances and I
really don't want to do it again!

My dear brother Iowan Tim Fay in Anamosa (http://wapsi-almanac.com *)
told me the saddest press story I've ever heard about a couple of fine
old presses entombed in concrete in the foundation of a building.
Rather than move the things out, they just filled in the whole
basement and built a new building on top of it. This was out in the
Iowa boonies somewhere. I guess it would have just cost way more to
get them out than they were worth in 'scrap'.

Sheesh.

A good project for 22nd C archeology grad students, I suppose.

P

* Tim's in the midst of printing his next edition of possibly the last
all linotype & web letterpress journal around...
Hope I'm not divulging top secret info... Guess I'll hear about it if
I am ;-)
