New Bill Reduces County Budget Shortfall Without Homestead Property Tax Increase

Annapolis, Maryland --Delegate Aisha Braveboy (D-25th District) of Prince George’s County announced today that she and Delegate Justin Ross (D-22nd District) plan to introduce legislation that would reduce the financial budget shortfall in Prince George’s County and lessen the necessity to raise the homestead property tax credit percentage.

The bill, MC/PG 127-09, proposes to transfer $60 million dollars over the next two fiscal years from the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission
(M-NCPPC) to the Prince George ’s County Government .  Braveboy and Ross say that the funding is coming from excess reserves of the agency

Sam Parker, Chair of the Prince George’s County Planning Board said he is pleased to be in a position to help the County and that the proposed fund transfer will not inhibit the agency in the performance of its duties nor will it eliminate existing projects.

Braveboy and Ross acknowledged the leadership and cooperation of County Executive Jack B.. Johnson (D-Prince George’s) and Council Chair Marilynn Bland (D-Council District 9). “The County Executive made the case for state intervention to help the County through this financial downturn and the County Chair called for our action,” Braveboy said.  They also credit Delegation Chair Melony Griffith (D-25th District), and Senate Chair Anthony Muse (D-26th District) for bringing the stakeholders together as the bill was being formulated.

Councilwoman Andrea Harrison (D-Council District 5) was recognized for working closely with the=2 0state to identify alternatives in order to ensure that public safety, healthcare and other essential services would not be compromised during the economic recovery period..

Braveboy and Ross will present the bill at a public hearing Saturday, February 28, 2009 at Prince George ’s Community College--Rennie Forum at 11am.

I think taxpayers--especially homeowners--are still in for a very rude awakening. While the Jack Johnson's head-on effort raise the assessment cap (HB 979)...

Mr. Carruthers is right on the money! Park and Planning has been overcollecting taxes, I believe, for many years by ignoring the homestead cap, which...
