Got this from Don Porth......

Hi Friends.  I don't usually do this kind of e-mail so if it seems odd, keep reading just a little further.

Myself and the Safety Learning Center at the Belmont Firehouse, the safety education facility I've helped develop at my job with Portland Fire & Rescue was awarded the "Firemark Award" from Liberty Mutual insurance earlier this year.  This was a nice honor and much appreciated for sure.  It comes with a second opportunity though.  At the end of the year, Liberty Mutual will award 10 of the nationwide Firemark Award winners with an additional award of $10,000.  This goes to our non-profit, the Jeff Morris Fire & Life Safety Foundation, to support fire and life safety education in the community.  To win this, it boils down to voting by people like you.

In order to vote, you need to go to the web site in the link below.  You then need to take the 10 question Quiz (doesn't matter if you get questions right or wrong - but they are good questions) which will then ask you to fill in some information about yourself.  Part of that is an e-mail address.  I know this can be uncomfortable for some so if this bothers you I can understand why.  However, to my knowledge, and after doing it myself, I haven't seen any change in spam or anything from Liberty Mutual.  If you do have concerns, I'm sure you could direct those to Kylie Tacheny, the agent who set us up with the preliminary award and the opportunity to compete for this $10,000 (her contact information will be at the web site link).

If you choose to do this, you'll get an e-mail some minutes after you submit your information.  Then you go to the link it provides and you have to cast your vote for the fire department you want to support.  If you put in the state of OR and the city of PORTLAND, you'll find two fire department choices.  Choose "PORTLAND FIRE & RESCUE."  That's all there is too it.  You can only vote once.

You won't hear any more about this from me.  Votes need to be cast by DECEMBER 21, 2009.  This could mean a substantial contribution to the Jeff Morris Foundation so I would appreciate any support you might give towards this, which is at no cost to yourself.  If you've read this far and want to help, the link is below.  Thank you for considering this.

Thanks
Don Porth
503-823-3615

PS, share this with your friends if you feel comfortable doing so.  Thanks for helping Portland, Oregon and the surrounding community become a safer place.

Several times the Question has been asked:  Will the new Red Books have Email addresses along with phone numbers?

Only names, addresses, phone, cell phone, retirement dates, and significant others' first names will be listed.

For your protection Emails will not be listed.

Emails are not listed for several reasons some of which are listed below.

1.  Many members opted out of the notification group because they received many unwanted Emails

2.  Our list was accessed and I personally received Emails from the Phillipines wanting to sell Real Estate.  They stated they had found  Emails from the list.

3.  Some members complained of getting Email from a person or persons they did not whish to hear from.

If you want someones Email, their phone is listed in the Red Book

Liliane just informed me that Rich went to PA Emergency this morning at 4 AM from severe internal bleeding. Cause unknown at this time. He is in ICU and is concious. His son Jeff is there donating blood to give him a transfusion. Liliane and Rich could use our thoughts and prayers at this critical time. That's all I have for now. I will pass on any update I receive.

Update on Dale

As you know, Dale went into Good Sam on Wednesday the 7th and will be in till
the end of the month. He is doing well, and within the norm of all he has had
to go through. They finished the transplant yesterday and he really reeks.
Apparently, they enclose his stem cells and blood with DMSO and boy do it stink.
It smells like clams and garlic and other strong odors. Hopefully for me, he
will start smelling better in a couple of days. The transplant went well and
now for the rest of the process. Because of the chemo, he is still struggling
with nausea but they are managing it pretty well. I can also see him losing
energy day by day. He requests no visitors and for now, doesn't even want to
talk to anybody. I will field the calls as best I can. You can call me at
503-680-9740 and If I don't answer, I will call you back when I can. I have to
ask you to call me, I can't remember to call everybody in a day or two to give
updates. He is doing well and, as expected, at this time. The doctor says it
will be approximately 100 days of recovery. We sure do appreciate all the
prayers that are being lifted up for our whole family but especially our Dale.
It is humbling to have so many people really caring about what is happening to
Dale. He is still a good guy and beloved by many. God bless you all, and keep
on praying. Peg, Mac, Angela.

Dale went into Good Sam hospital on Wednesday the 7th. Chemo started that day
and will continue until Monday. Tuesday, they will start introducing his stem
cells back to him for three days. His blood counts are dropping as was
expected. He felt fairly well on Wednesday and Thursday but is getting weaker
and sicker both yesterday and today, also as expected. He has a lot of nausea
but it is being managed fairly well. He is in for about 3 weeks and he will get
sicker before he will get better. We are asking that he have no visitors but
appreciate the well wishes and prayers. Here is my cell number if you want a
progress report. 503-680-9740. If I don't answer, please leave a message and I
will call back as soon as I am able. We thank you so much for being our
friends. More as I am able. Peg

Got this from the Bureau:

Good morning!

I hope this email finds you all well.  I wanted to send you all an invite to the Wine & Cheese Reception at Portland State University on October 19, 2009 from 5:30 to 8:30 pm.

At the Wine & Cheese Reception, seven designs submitted by PSU Alumni Architects for the new Campbell Memorial will be unveiled.  The Campbell Memorial is currently located at 19th and West Burnside, erected to memorialize Chief Campbell and other firefighters who have died in the line of duty.  The new Campbell Memorial will be constructed at the east end of the Hawthorne Bridge and will be a lasting tribute to honor Portland firefighters bravery and sacrifice in the line of duty.  One of the seven architectural designs will be chosen through a selection process and modified to meet our vision as well for the Memorial.

Please feel free to pass this invite onto any retirees you see fit.  We would really appreciate your feedback on the designs and have a chance to catch up with you all!
