Hello members.

New member John Medley wrote the following... .
My interest in the PBY comes from my activities as a collector of vintage produce crate labels.
My main area of interest is that of Arizona citrus shipping crate labels in use prior to the development
of cardboard cartons in the shipment of fresh citrus from Arizona. The use of wood boxes and paper
labels ceased about 1955-57. My experience in collecting and preserving crate labels leads me to think
this particuliar label was in used in the late 1940's or early 1950's.
I recently added a new item to my archive of labels; see attachment.
It is a 10" x11" crate label featureing an illustration of a PBY in low flight over citrus groves with

wheels retracted in front of Camelback Mountain, a local Phoenix landmark.
The citrus label "brand" name is CATALINA and the packer/shipper is Landon Fruit Company of Phoenix, Arizona.
The color of the aircraft in the illustration is navy blue and in place of the usual navy "star between
bars" logo is a numeral 71 between the bars where the star normally appears.
Illustrators working for printing companies usually took a lot of artistic license when creating crate label
illustrations for customers, so the position of the numeral and the absence of the star is not surprising.
However, I wondered if a member of a Landon family ever piloted or crewed on a PBY numbered as 71,
or if a family member served in a navy unit designated as 71. Were PBYs were stationed in and around
the general Phoenix area during or post WWII? Lake Roosevelt east of Mesa,AZ is the largest body of
water in central AZ, would sea planes have been assigned at the lake?
Thanks is advance for your assistance or observations.
John Medley.

I do see many references to "PBY" and "Landon" when I do a short internet search.  Do you any first names or any other info on this family?

Bill, going over those Mts always gave us an extra hashmark. Those native runners that the Aussie Commandos worked, were something else.We taught them the dirtiest words to call their Chiefs(not ours)when we landed .We would point to someone in the plane, call him a SOB,and tell them him like your Chief a SOB,you tell them. This went on with about everything. When we got over 15000 feet they would start shaking all over and those goose bumps would come out all over them,we then supplied them with blankets....It was so funny at that time, got our minds off a lot of things.Whenever we got back from a hairy flight, our PPC always gave us a fifth of Scotch or Gin,......All these come back to me.....Loaned my Doc today my Log Book and told him his life depended on the safety of that book.He said he would protect it with his life. When I get it back next week will reprint it in another Log book that I have Rat Holed away.It will be word for word,no added remarks.Sorry for this long reply....................Larry(the extra log book I have was given to me by our Log Yeoman,a bit yellowed but it still mint state.

Thanks for the photos.  It would be a shame to have the plane damaged by exposure to the elements while it is in pieces.  I think having it go to a museum would be a good option (Boeing) if no one gets it in flying condition.  I tell my wife a PBY would fit in the backyard if the wings were not on it.  If I could only win the lottery...

Hello members.

Info on the Skagit PBY:

"The airplane was moved off the airport to a storage facility one mail from the airport.
The wings were removed for this but the airframe and all components are in good shape.

The logbooks 'disappeared' when the bank repo'd the airplane and we are in the process of trying to recover them.  My understanding is that the engines have not been run in quite some time, I am guessing they will need an overhaul.  Other than that the airplane is in great shape and much work had been completed before it was taken back by the bank.

The wings are now covered with tarps, but we are in the process of getting it professionally moved by airframe mechanics to indoor storage"

Another message from Larry Katz......

Heijo, everytime I open one of our groups E-Mails and see one of our planes, regardless of Atlantic or Pacific Coasts I look at the blisters and think back where the Hand Grenade I threw out, bounced back from the upper section and landed on the catwalk where we were throwing everything over the side to lessen the weight. To this day, keep thinking about pulling the pin(Which I did not).(To the ones who are reading this and know nothing what I am talking about, its going over the Owen Stanleys and engine cutting out with those Australian Commandos and Coast Watchers in our plane. What do you know Heijo?  This is out your way and I know you have been keeping your eyes on it.  It is the PBY that is at Skagit County, Wa and has been on a long-term rebuild since taxiing into a ditch with fatal results in Montana back in May, 1985 just prior to a proposed delivery to the Israeli Air Force Museum (which didn’t ever happen of course).

When I was putting my book together what seems year ago now, I saw in more than one private research paper (ie: not official source documents) a reference to CF-NCJ with a pedigree of c/n CV-420 ex-44-33924.  My understanding was that the private papers had been put together using official records so I went along with it and reproduced that data in my book.  Since then there has been doubt that CF-NCJ was a Catalina at all although it is odd that the previous researchers had been specific about previous identities.  As Ragnar says, CF-NJC was certainly a Canso A and it is currently preserved at Goose Bay on external static display.  I and many others have quoted it as being an ex-USAAF OA-10A whereas Ragnar’s researches have proved it to be a former RCAF Canso A.  In this particular case however many of us have been duped because official records have it recorded incorrectly!

Erik,

On 05Oct51 the Contracting office of the USAF's Mobile Air Materiel Area, Brookley Air Force Base, Alabama, issued an Invitation for Bids covering the hull of 44-33924, CV 420, (and several other), less wing center section and landing gear. I don't know whether there were any takers, but I am not aware of any Cat being registered CF-NCJ. There was, and still is, a CF-NJC of the Government of Newfoundland & Labrador, but that is Canso A #11091, CV 431, often confused with 44-33929, CV 430.

Hi group.

Is there some one in the group there known what fate (Bu.67888 – 44-33924 – CV-420 – CF-NCJ) may have? The only information I have is, Government of Newfoundland & Labrador c. 1973, from the book of David Legg.

Are there any photos of her?

Many regards from

Erik
