My name is Wm.F.(Bill) O"Neil, retired USN Chief Radioman , residing in Norfolk, Virginia. I received orders in Feb.1942 to report to the Fleet Air Base, Reykjavik, Iceland for assignment to the base radio shack. At the time we were trained as aviation radiomen, but were standing CW radio watches around the clock as general service RM. VP73 (PBY) was the anti sub patrol squadron on duty at that time and very often ,for one reason or another ran short of  flight radio operators, so a few of us were assigned temporary duty to fly with the squadron on patrols until not needed as fill ins ,then returned to the radio shack for duty. Late in  1942 VP 73 was relieved by VP 84 also with the PBY and the same situation continued. I flew with various squadron crews up until Sept.1943 .I estimate we spent more time flying air crews than standing radio watches. Many years later , after I had retired a second career , in 1987 I helped organize an amateur radio organization for  Hams  that were associated with "Flying Boats"--although not just PBY'S.The web site is  http://www6.pilot.infi.net/~joneil/fbars/ ----the membership list of 379  lists many, many, Catalina flyers  ; pilots, navigators, mechs, ordnancemen, radiomen, factory personnel, and ground crews..
A few years ago I attended an annual reunion of the PBY-CIA here in Virginia Beach, never in my wildest dreams thinking I would ever crawl into a PBY and actually fly one again, but miracles do happen. For a small price to help pay for fuel, oil, and hydraulic leaks the old bird from a museum in Geneseo, NY carried 8 or 9 of us  at a time for a wonderful take off---cruise up and down the beach ---and safe and sound landing . My youngest son John  also paid his dues and flew with me ...riding the blisters and grinning from ear to ear. .
Anyone with a radio that will tune 14255 KHZ, give a listen at 1500 EST every Sunday and Wednesday . Net controls are NY4B/ DUB, K9YER/ FRED, and K9IDB/ BUD. If you are a ham operator..feel free to join in .You are very welcome.
One other note,  We are in contact with seven  others from the days in Iceland with the PBY aircraft .....most are  members of the FBARS net

Hello members

I have visited the Mc Chord Air Force Base Catalina, Washington USA.
I was told that after take off from salt water the Catalina cockpit windows had
to be cleaned by the bomber/nose gunner by opening the nose turret and leaning
out of the turret, and manualy cleaning the pilot's windows.
Does anybody have any experience with this????

My name is Peter Hadingue. I currently live in Biggleswade near the
Shuttleworth Collection.

I got to know the Cat in 1987 when I helped put G-BLSC back together after
some rather heavy winter maintenance. For approximately 10 years I worked on
the Cat and became a member of the "Cat Pac" flying with the aircraft to
airshows all over Europe. We even took the aircraft to Gibraltar on a 10 hour
stint at 10,000 ft.

Sure makes you appreciate the old boys that flew for 24 hours onu-boat patrol.

I am working on a web page that describes our experiences with photos etc.
However this is off line at the moment due to maintenance.

My interest in this group is only because of my experience with the
PBY. I was in the flight crew of PBYs before and during WWII.I have
approximately 4000 hours of flight time. Some of this time was in the
States and the rest was in the South Pacific. I was down at sea 3 times
and lost my plane off of Christmas Island. I was at Midway,Guadacanal
and many other spots in the Pacific.

My name is Ian Maw, I am currently working as a missile technician with 1
air maint. sqn., 4 Wing Cold Lake,Alberta Canada. My interest in aviation
goes back to my childhood, When I started modelling, I was resigned to
whatever Airfix, or Frog model was available at the local department store,
these were inevitably all second world war subjects, and as a result, I
became quite knowlegeable in the period through researching the histories of
these aircraft. My interests led me to my first job at the local flying
club, and then a career with Canada's airforce. I joined up as an airframe
tech., then switched over to the armament world. I managed to work on the
equipment that interested me the most, notably the Tutor, Tracker,Buffalo,
Labrador helicopter, and finally the CF-5, but when the last Freedom Fighter
went into storage, I worked on the weapon's range for awhile, until finally
ending up in labs.
Growing up in Canada, old aircraft are taken for granted by most. They are
literally everywhere. But a growing number of us still get excited when we
see a fleet of A-26's wintering in Red Deer, or a formation of Avengers on
thier way to the next job. The Cansos were always a part of the summer
scene. Although seeing one is getting to be a rare surprise on the prairies
now that the Saskatchewan government has sold the last of thiers. They are
still pretty active up north with Buffalo Airways, and are still busy in
Newfoundland with a few more scattered from coast to coast. There are only
13 PBY's still holding certificates of airworthingness left in Canada, that
must be the all time low since 1941.
My affection for the Canso and Catalina is shared with few other aircraft,
The Grumman Tracker for personal reasons, the Convair twins for no
particular reason, and the old Dakota for obvious reasons.
Maybe I just like large airplanes with radial engines, especially the ones
that can earn thier keep long after anyone could have thought possible.

Hello all PBY Catalina enthusiasts,

My name is Ragnar J. Ragnarsson and I live in Iceland. I came onto the
flying scene too late to have a chance of flying the Catalina, but I
did manage to get some time in the right hand seat of DC-3s before
these were retired. Today I retain a PPL only and fly a French Jodel
DR250.

My association with the PBY began some 25 years ago when I started
researching antisubmarine operations from Iceland during World War II.
Several ASW Catalina squadrons were stationed in Iceland during the
war, including 209 RAF, VP-73 and VP-84 USN, 330 (Norwegian) RAF and
162 RCAF. Altogether Iceland-based Catalinas accounted for the
destruction of 10 German U-boats during the war. Six of these were
sunk by a single squadron, VP-84 USN, whose yet unpublished history I
have written.

I hope the PBY MailList will turn out to be an active one.

Good luck,
Ragnar

Well, I'll be the first I think.

My name is Peter Boel and live in the Netherlands just nearby The Hague. My interest in the Catalana started a long time ago when I was a kid (some people say  it was yesterday . . ) The only plane I always liked was a catalina because of shape of the plane and because it could land on the water. Now we have a Cat in the Netherlands with a great historie ( http://home.wxs.nl/~boelpvt ), what else do you want! Oke fly with it.

I work at the Royal Dutch Library in the Hague as a senior Networkengineer for some years now and I'm 31 years old.

So that is it.

Hya to all the fellow cataholics out there,

Some time ago (about 8-10 years) my wife told me to get a hobby.
Remembering the 'good old days' with my father assembling plastic model
kits I took that up again. The first model was a PBY Catalina. Of course
I wanted to 'do it right' this time. So I started to collect info about
Catalinas....
Somehow, I got the model finished. The collecting of material continued
though. Now my archive is large. And it needs some attention as well.

For this group I can supply general knowlegde of the PBY Catalina and I
will share info I receive through visitors of my web site
(http://www.catalina.demon.nl/).

Being one of the Dutch volunteers from Plane Sailing, it gave me an
excellent opportunity to be busy with one of the best things on this planed
and that is working on Catalinas. For several years I've workt on our own
Cat, well we all know what happened with it last summer. So that came to an
end, and I tought working on Cats as well. Well luckily it did not come to
an end, as some of you will known the Greenpeace Catalina is now at Duxford
receiving some maintenance. One of the things done to it was removing the
ailerons, the fabric was in a bad state and needed to be replaced. On the
left hand side there is an window instalt that is removable during flight.

PH-PBY will NOT be ferried from Schiphol Airport to Naval Air Station
Valkenburg on the 12th of March. There is a NEW date though some time
during the second week of April. Considered that the a/c was not
airworthy in December 98, this still is very good news. The Stichting
Neptune Association will take care of the a/c over 1999 so it will be
fully airworthy again in 2000.

A story found on the World Wide Web:
http://www.fly-in.org/day1.html

This cat has at least nine lives
By FREDERICK A. JOHNSEN

Charlie Largay worked so hard getting his PBY-5A Catalina amphibian ready for
the trip to Oshkosh 1998, it has blisters.

Scarcely finished the day before the broad-winged patrol bomber flew here Monday
was the reinstallation of two huge bug-eyed waist blisters so characteristic of
combat
Catalinas during World War II. Actually, Largay credits the skilled warbird
rebuilders
at Tom Reilly's restoration facility in Kissimmee, Florida, with taking any
human
blisters in the process.

Largay and his crew continue to restore the Catalina, registered N96UC, even as
they take it on the road from its home base at Miami's Tamiami Executive
Airport.
There's one more armament feature conspicuous by its absence on the big bomber -
its pillbox-shaped nose turret was removed decades ago, and the snout was
reshaped with a so-called "clipper bow" that may be more suited to water
operations.
In fact, Largay says, the only way he can get the Cat certified for water
landings and
takeoffs is by keeping the integrity of the sealed clipper bow intact.

He's got his eye on an original nose for a Catalina, and may use this spare nose
to
graft parts on, externally, to give the cosmetic appearance of a combat Catalina
without violating the integrity of the clipper bow's structure.

Largay's gusto for the PBY comes naturally; he learned to fly Catalinas in the
Navy in
1943, the same year his plane was built by Convair in San Diego, California.
Identified with Navy Bureau of Aeronautics number 48375, Largay's Cat spent 1944
between Miami and Seattle before transferring to the U.S. Coast Guard for
service in
1945 and '46. Other stateside details and storage at Sand Point in Seattle,
Washington, culminated in the sale of the plane in 1953 to Trans Alaskan
Airlines for
$2,600, and application of U.S. Civil Registration No. N4937V.

In 1955 the government of Paraguay bought this PBY and gave it a full civilian
appearance; gone were the gun emplacements Largay is working so hard to replace
now. Catalina 48375 ultimately served in the Fuerza Aerea (the Air Force) of
Paraguay. Largay says his PBY flew deposed Argentinean leader Juan Peron to
safety following a harrowing rough-water landing beside a Paraguayan navy ship
on
which Peron had sought sanctuary on Oct. 5, 1955.

During the next four decades this long-lived Cat alternately flew for Paraguay
and
slumbered in storage there until sold in January 1993 by the Paraguayan Air
Force.
Several civilian owners later, Charlie Largay is grooming the surprisingly large
seaplane for its new life as a show plane.

Patience is a virtue when operating a lumbering big PBY. Flying time from Miami
to
Oshkosh was 10 hours, with one stop, Largay said. At 100 gallons of gasoline an
hour to feed the two Pratt & Whitney R-1830 radial engines, that's 1,000 gallons
from
Florida to AirVenture '98 at Oshkosh, plus about 50 gallons of oil consumed by
the
radial powerplants.

But where else could the crew of a Catalina bring their prize to let upwards of
800,000 people have the chance to see it in a week's time?

The bird Innovator was still at Aurora airport, south of Portland, Oregon, USA
when I visited that Catalina on February 13th 1999.
The aircraft is parked at the far end of the airfield.
Take the Interstate 5, Aurora Airfield exit, heading east.
Turn left where it says airfield.
The airfield will now be on your right.
Turn right at the first crossing.
Keep driving to the far end of the airfield, till you see the sign
for aircraft maintenance to the right; on that road, just before
you come to an S-turn, the aircraft will be on the right.
The Catalina is parked in the open, easy to take pictures.

When I visited the aircraft, the extra Lycoming engines were taken off.
Several skin panel at the original engineers position were removed.
Where the Lycoming engines used to be, there was plastic covering
the exposed skin; It looked like the only thing done was taking off
the extra engines and their systems.

Greetings
Heijo Kuil

This Cat was recently purchased by Omni Aviation, Inc. of Idaho. I have been
getting it up and running after sitting at VNY for many years. A few
more squawks to work off and the owner has a real nice Airyacht. The aircraft
will be positioned at Long Beach occasionally, and our PBY
Catalina maintenance base at John Wayne Orange County Airport until the
weather improves in Idaho. I am planning on taking to its new home
around the last week in April. Until then it will be flying the skies of
So Cal.

The buyer recently sold his HU-16 and aquired this PBY to take to his home in
Northern Idaho. The new owner has a substantial amount of time
in PBY's and has flown the late Cousteau PBY and the 4 engine Bird
Innovator....which by the way has had the outboard engines removed.

If anyone wants to see N69RF or my PBY N324FA e-mail me and set up an
appointment. We are planning to fly both ships together mid march
for some aerial photo's.

Rumour (not confirmed yet)
PH-PBY (Bu No 2459) will be ferried from Schiphol Airport to Naval Air Station
Valkenburg on the 12 of March. Considered that the a/c was not airworthy in
December 98, this is very good news. The Stichting Neptune Association will
take care of the a/c over 1999 so it will be fully airworthy again in 2000.

Marc.
