I think I remember you, Jim. I remembered I visited the com. center and telephone mainframes and you guy did such a pretty job that I demanded my installers to do the same when I returned from active duty and worked for the then Standard Oil Company of California (now Chevron Corporation) in San Francisco. It is nice to hear from you. Jesse, and George. Hope to hear more from other folks.
Happy Thanksgiving Holiday!!
George, did you remembered the burnt turkey that Yolanda roasted....her first in her life. But it was pretty tasty though.

Thanks for the nice greetings. My frozen turkey thawed out last Friday
so I had to cook it. Thankfully, nothing is left of the 14 lb bird but
the smell. When you live alone as I do, you can move holidays around
to suit yourself.
It is nice you hear from a few PACFO people. Eric Wong and I still
stay in touch but no one ever posts anything but you, Jesse.
I hope you and Ruth have a great time. Also if any other PACFOers are
listening in, I hope your Thanksgiving will be as good or better than
mine. Now please pass the ham as I am sick of turkey!

I haven't sent any updates for a long time. Mainly because we lead the ordinary and dull lives of people in their 70"s. Is ths possible when we were in our 20's and 30's such a short time ago?
Sorry to hear about the busted leg, George. Hope you got the high speed model crutches. I just got down from the roof replacing a gutter guard that had blown off last winter (Actually, it was knocked off by 2 guys hired to shovel our roof after the snow had built up to 30 inches on it). Carol was holding the ladder for ol' shaky me and I vowed that would be my last time up on the roof ever again. We got back to Michigan in January this year because we sold our place in Port Isabel, Tx that we had ben going to for the past 15 years. So instead of five months there each year, we are planing to go to Gulf Shores, Al for Jan and Feb only this year. Lani's husband tok a job transfer to Baton Rouge last year, so we'l stop and se them plus they are only 4 hours over to see us on some of the wekends.
We are going on a 12 day cruise next week leaving from Philadelphia down the Delaware and Chesapeake then up to Portland Me and then to St johns and Halifax, Novaa Scotia.
George, I looked at the pictures that Quentin Jones posted. They are great and bought back many memories. Never got up to Pleiku, but I did a Nixon ARVNization job at Vung Tau using a FRC-109 M/W from there in a back-to-back baseband relay connecting to an existing Tropo system previusly linking Phan Thiet (over on the coast) with the Vung Tau Signal Mountain site I had a real mad pilot on my butt because he had taken fire at Pleiku and the S/Sgt who was supposed to meet him at the Ving Tau air base got drunk and never showed up to off-load the system. The team chief sent him back to Ft Huachca pronto because the guy was no use to the team any other time either.
Thanks to Quentin for putting up the great pictures. Take care of that broken leg, George.

Hi Tom,
Good to hear from you, too. Sorry about the delay in posting your
message. Yahoo seemed to think it was spam and held it for me to
approve. Since they didn't tell me I needed to do anything, I didn't
see your message was hung up until this morning.
Thanks for the good wishes. At least nothing more has happened lately
and I am slowly recovering.
Hope you and family have a good summer. I hear it is hot out your way!

As I pitched forward I tried to stop the fall by hanging on to the railing with my right hand... dislocated my right shoulder and then landed in a heap on top of my left leg, shattering a thigh bone and spraining my ankle. It has taken 3 months but I am getting around again but much more slowly and carefully.
On top of that the weather has been terrible here in Maryland. I have been flooded twice this spring and then week before last I had a personal sized tornado sit down in the backyard while I was sitting there. We managed to get into the house but were dodging huge limbs that were crashing down all around us. The biggest one weighed about 600 lb.s and missed me by one foot. The limb had been torn off my tulip poplar at about the 80 ft. level, was blown over the top of my house and landed on my back walkway missing me but taking out my concrete birdbath. My neighbor was not as lucky. A big limb came off his oak tree and went straight down thru the roof of his brick garage. All of the lawn chairs that we had been peacefully sitting in moments before were blown into a big heap.

Thank you Jesse and George for your good wishes. Yes, there has not been very quite in the last six month or so. Everyone must be very busy.
I am sorry to hear about George's medical and tornado problems. We hope you are fully recovered. As we live in California, we always afraid that the Big One (earthquake) is coming....but none of us can predict when. Just be prepared - like the Boy Scouts.
I enjoyed reading messages from everyone on this website and happy to learn what and how you doing in your retirement. Please keep them coming.
I had retired the third time (not by choice) from my consulting job last September since my official retirement from Chevron Corporation in 1999. I missed work very much. In order to keep busy, Yolanda and I go to the gym every weekday morning for 1.5 to 2.5 hours. In the afternoon and/or evening, I take woodworking and photography classes. I built a toy chest for our grandsons and a house-plant stand/table for Yolanda; they came out okay I thought. Unfortunately, there is no class offered for woodworking and photography this summer. We still keep busy with social and professional activities every weekend though.
We try to do more overseas travel while we are still able to walk and climb. We visited Egypt and Jordan in late February and early March. We cruised the Niles; visited the pyramids, the Valley of the Kings, and Valley of the Queen in Egypt, and Petra in Jordan. In May, we spent two weeks in Peru. We climbed the Machu Picchu and visited the world's largest floating islands. We just returned from Hawaii (attending a wedding) two days ago. I forgot to bring Nelson Chong's phone number so I missed the chance to talk to him while I was in Honolulu (I visited the Chongs about 3 or 4 year ago).
We have received notices on the Thai-Oki reunions. However, I missed the chance to meet with several PACFOers because work schedule prevented me to attend that reunion. It would be great if many of us would participate in these events....so we can get re-acquainted again.
Until next time, take care.

OKI-THAI SIGNAL REUNION 2009
Daytona Beach, Florida October 20-25
Dear Oki-Thai Veteran,
This letter is going to all who have responded to previous
correspondence as being interested in our reunions. I don’t want to
discourage anyone from staying in a maybe status but would be
interested in those who no longer can make it. I am also interested if
you have a spouse or guest who is not on the list but is attending. Our
tentative list, follows later. The time is now to firm up your plans
for attending the 2009 reunion. Many people express the feeling that
they do not want to attend the reunion because there are not that many
people on the roster that they know, so they probably won't know that
many people at the reunion. There is enough commonality among those
attending that you soon get the feeling that you know them. Some of the
attendees were probably doing your job before you got there or after
you left. Another thing to do is round up those you know on the roster
and agree to get reacquainted at the reunion. Many attending have made
many new friends by attending the reunions and look forward to seeing
them at the next reunion. Don't worry that you feel that the wives will
be left out, in no time at all they are normally right in the swing of
things and enjoying the comradeship, our reunions would not be as
successful as they are without their support. Don't say “I will try to
make it next year“, we are getting too old for that. List of tentative
attendees some have sent pre registration form others have indicated
intentions by other means, if information is not correct let me know:

to tour on their own or for small groups who indicated interest in the Daytona

Port Canaveral has a bus pickup available for those wishing to go. The

Thursday Ponce Inlet - A quaint “Old Florida” town
offers a sampling of some of the area’s best waterfront restaurants,
the Manatee tour boat and Inlet Lighthouse. I have made some tentative
arrangements with the Inlet Harbor Restaurant which has a 25 seat
passenger bus to pick us about up about 2:30 PM. If this does not work
out we will car pool to Ponce Inlet which is about 7 miles south of the
hotel. It is to be noted that the lighthouse is not in the immediate
vicinity of the boat tour and the restaurant and they will have to car
pool separately. I will have a signup sheet in the hotel for those who
will volunteer to drive and those needing a ride. For those who have
not already indicated their intent (see list above) to attend either A
or B below please give me a heads up for purpose of reservations.
A. Manatee Scenic Boat Tour- A 2 hour
narrated scenic tour. See manatees, dolphins, birds, Ponce De Leon
Lighthouse and waterfront homes. Prices are expected to run about $22
per person and will be limited to the first 38 people who sign up. We
will leave at about 3:00 PM and return in time to allow us to be seated
at the Inlet Harbor Restaurant about 5:15 PM for their Sunset specials.
heads up for purpose of reservations
B. Dinner at the Inlet Harbor Restaurant -
Sunset specials, seated prior to 6 PM, are a great price from $11.99 to
$15.99 plus 18% gratuity, for a great selection of seafood, pork chops,
prime rib and Jamaica-Mon chicken breast. I will make reservations for
all who are interested and have us seated as a group. heads up
for purpose of reservations.
C. Ponce De Leon Lighthouse - This light
house is the tallest in Florida and the 2nd tallest in the
nation. Climb the 203 steps to the top for breathtaking views of the
Florida coastline. See the restored third order Fresnel lens turn and
shine in the lantern room. This National Historic Landmark is one of
the few lighthouse stations in the country with all the original
keepers’ dwellings and outbuildings intact. Admission $5. For those
able to climb the 203 steps and interested. The hours are 10 AM to 5
PM, if you are also attending the boat tour or the dinner at the
restaurant allow yourself about 30 minutes to get there.
Friday Ohana Luau - The sights and sounds of the
islands come alive at this dinner show. Become part of the excitement
as you learn traditional dances with these Hawaiian beauties and
warriors. A tropical feast will be served to you at your table. The
group rate for this is $34.95 . For those who have not already
indicated their intent (see list above) to attend please give me a heads
up for purpose of reservations.
Saturday night Banquet , a sit-down dinner consisting
of; Traditional
Caesar Salad, Marinated Char-broiled Flank Steak w/fresh
mushroom sauce on the side or Slow Roasted Pork Loin w/Mediterranean
relish, Twice Baked Idaho Potatoes, Stir Fried Vegetable Medley, Moist
Carrot Cake w/sour cream frosting and Coffee/Iced tea/Decafe coffee. A
cash bar will be available for drinks. Wine by the carafe may be
preordered for $13 a carafe and picked up at the bar. See registration
form to preorder and make your selection. We will have a seating chart
set up to make the seating easier. If our attendance figures hold up we

Travel -
A. Daytona Beach Airport - Is served by Delta and U.S.
Airways on a daily basis . With comfortable seating areas in the
terminal, easy access to rental cars, and no long lines at security,
you'll be in and out quickly -- giving you even more time to enjoy the
area! Those who arrive at Daytona International Airport and don't plan
to use a rental car may wish to use the Yellow Cab shuttle service to
the hotel. Fare is about$10.00 each way.
B. Orlando International Airport - Located an hour's drive
from Daytona Beach, Orlando International Airport is one of the
nation's major airports and serviced by many domestic and international
carriers. Rental car recommended.
C. Orlando Sanford Airport - International charter and
scheduled domestic service are available. The Daytona Beach area is
located 35 miles northeast of the Orlando Sanford Airport via
Interstate 4. Rental car recommended.
D. Jacksonville International Airport - Another option is
the Jacksonville International Airport, approximately two hours' drive
north of Daytona Beach. This airport is conveniently located just off
Interstate 95. Rental car recommended.
E. If you are driving to Daytona we recommend using
1-95 exit # 256 (Port Orange/SR 421). Continue east on SR 421
(Dunlawton) to S. Atlantic. Turn left on S. Atlantic. The hotel will be
about ½ mile north on your right.
Future Reunions
A. Punch Le Blanc has volunteered to host the reunion in 2010 in
Baton Rouge LA. Punch suggested we can convene in Baton Rouge and take
day trips to New Orleans because of the cost of New Orleans
accommodations. He also has suggested a later date for this due to the
possibility of hurricanes and the high humidity in the summer. The date
for this reunion will be discussed further at the 2009 reunion. Since
we are about due to go west again I had recommended Arizona as a
possible site for a reunion. There was some interest in this expressed
at the reunion. I have a proposal from the Best Western Dobson Ranch
Inn, Mesa Arizona. The rates quoted for 2010 at $75 a night seem
reasonable. It is 11 miles SE of The Phoenix Airport. There seems to be
plenty to see there and we have quite a few of our members that area. I
believe this would be a great area all we need is for someone to step
forward and host this. I will as usual be glad to assist as will other
members of our group.
B. The continuation of our reunions depends on volunteers to step
forward and set up and host them. While there is work involved in
setting them up there is also a lot of satisfaction when you see old
comrades being reunited and enjoying themselves through your efforts.
Many of our past reunions have been set up by our older members who
will soon not be able to continue this effort. Please fill out the info
sheet following the registration sheet.
We look forward to seeing you in Daytona Beach. Roy

Hi George,
I didn't participate in that debauch; at least I don't think I did.
Although the brain cells may have been so pickled I don't remember.
But I do remember a night at the Top of the Rock Annex when we were
building a pyramid of San Miguel bottles. I seem to remember it was
about 3 cases worth and that Sam and John were in on that one. Also
a hike up one of the streams with a couple of 2 liter bottles of
OB. Or was it Orion? Can't repeat what you said when you jumped
into the pool, at least not in polite company.
The mess is indeed that. I have been debating if I have saved
enough just to throw in the towel, but my 401(k) took such a hit
that I don't think so. Looks like I may have to put in another 6 -
8 years. You govm'nt people -- out at 30, a bit envious of that.
I'll forward my resume separately.
Take care
Larry
Hi John,
Great hearing from you. It's hard to believe it has been 35 years.
Michigan seems too cold, you're not in the "uppa" are you? I'm sorry
to hear of Connie's loss. She was still in high school the last time
I saw her. Seems like yesterday at times.
I will forward my resume to you. I assume you have MSWord? Just
looking for people who may know people who may know people. Something
akin to the six degrees of separation. Ohmygod, I just realize that I
know someone who knows someone who knows Obama. Maybe I should
forward my resume.
Take care
Larry
OK Larry George shamed me into it. It has been a long time since we left Oki. I feel sure that there is nothing that I could do to help. However if you ever get to Florida I will open up the bar for you... good luck... Jim Caldwell
You can't always choose whom you love, but you can choose how to find them. Start with AOL Personals.
I guess there is 'all' as it seems we are down to just Larry, John
Douglas and me??? I guess old age is catching up with the group.
Good memory, Larry. I remember being thrown out of many clubs on
Okinawa. Were you with me when Ocuma O Club closed early and we helped
ourselves until about 2 AM. We payed for all of our drinks but I know
they must have had hell reweighing all of the bottles. Geeze, I hope
that is beyond the statute of limitations?
I am sorry to hear you got into the lay off mess. Every few years, it
seemed as though I would lose my job. I even got a letter tossing me
out the gate at Ft. Huachuca... but then they thought better of it and
promoted me to GS-13 and demoted the personnel officer who wrote the
letter from GS-14 to GS-13. He never seemed to like me after that. So
I came close but managed to get credit for 30 years of service in 1996
when I retired. It must be terrible to have your life turned upside
down like that. Especially now when the economic situation is so
uncertain.
You have my respect for wanting to take the PE tests for licensing this
late in life. I am having trouble counting the fingers I have on each
hand at this point. The IRS pointed out my forgetfullness just this
year. I just paid what they said I owed as they seemed to be much
smarter than I am. Now I learn that our dear Mayor Marion Barry hasn't
paid taxes for 7 years now and they haven't done anything to him. If I
can be of any help in your references, please let me know.
Welcome back. It is good to hear from you again. We must have come back from Oki about the same time as I returned in July '73 after feive and a half great years working in the EM branch, Xsmn Div under Sam Glassman and Bill Neuendorff. Then they messed my life up and made me a Director of Comm at Dugway PG and ater 3 years there, I moved on in the same job to Red River AD in Texas for 10 years. After a couple more years at Rock Island, I bailed out on the early retirement offer of '88 with 27 total years.. We now live in northrn Michigan. We used to spend the winter months in Texas near South Padre Island. After going there for the past 18 years, we decided to sell the place this year. Our daughter Connie lost her husband a few years ago and has moved from Salt Lake City to be near us in Alpena, Mi So we decided to be here with her and make some short winter
trips to warm up somewhere in future years. It was also getting to be a pain to keep up maintaining two places. Seems like I was spending more time finin' than enjoyin'.
One of the many things I remember about you is when you came over to our house in Kishaba and find Carol doing one of her many craft projects, you always came out with "Watcha builin', Carol?" Do you remember that?
Let's keep in touch. And if there is any way I could help your resume, let me know, but I don't think anything from an old, retired fart is going to open many doors for you
Best regards. John and Carol Douglas

George,
Would that I were you. I got caught up in the layoff mees the week before Thnaksgiving. I'm trying to determine if I have enough saved up to retire or if I need to keep plugging away.
Can't say I entirely remember that going away party, except that we got to the club and demanded they open up for us, and then protested when they threw us out after closing.
I'm currently living in Colorado Springs having moved my way across the country in steps from Florida then South Carolina and finally here.
I've been signal integrity work for the past 14 years. It seem the early education in microwaves at PACFO has stood me in good stead. Until I was let go I had been working on the latest incarnation of Fibre Channel storage networks with data running around at 16GHz.
I'm looking into studying for and taking the professional engineer's exam and getting licensed in Colorado to help
fill my time. I may need to ask you and some other folks on this list to be references on the application. Seems the licensing board need verification of work history back to high school.

Greetings,
Welcome to Lt. Larry Barnes with PACFO from 1972 -73. Larry and I
overlapped by 6 months or so. I left PACFO for Ft. Huachuca in June of
1972 when you guys poured me on the plane down in Naha.
How is life treating you, Larry? I have been retired from the
government since May 1995. Good thing I did as I might do it with the
economic conditions today.

I worked out of PACFO from August 68 to December 69.. I was one of the
guys stuck inside a frame terminating thousands of wires.. Jim
We overlapped tours. I was a cpt. at that time but converted to civil
service in Jan. 1969.
I am sorry to have taken so long to post this as I have been down with
the flu for nearly 2 weeks.
I surely do want my money back on that worthless flu shot!
Hope everyone is doing well this year... sitting on your money and
praying!!!
Whishing all members and their loved ones a great year!!

Greetings,
Thanks for the Christmas and New Year's greetings from the members. Jim
Cook, our newest member, posted 20 pictures of the Comm at Korat
Thailand in 1969.
Be sure to take a look and drop Jim a line if you were ever up in
Korat. Most of my times in Thailand were spent in the swamps!
Best wishes to all.
George
Here's a great big Texas Merry Christmas and a happy new year to all our PACFO friends from Ruth and Jess Polston in Whitehouse Texas . God be with you all.
George,
Thank you for the warm welcome and for allowing me to join this group.
I thought I should provide a little background about myself as a way
for the group to get to know me.
With an induction notice in hand I joined the Army (RA) at Fort Wayne
Detroit on Sept 1st 1967 to beat the draft. On to Ft Leonard Wood for
BCT, in late November of 67 was assigned to Ft Monmouth for AIT as a
32E20 (Fixed Plant Carrier Repair). Upon graduation from AIT in June
of 68 I was assigned to the 29th Group in Bangkok Thailand. Group HQ
placed me with HHC 442nd Sig BN (Long Lines) STRATCOM in Korat.
Went right to work as the NCOIC of the AN/MRC-98 Tropo systems at the
Korat IWCS complex (AKA Jones Park). When I arrived the command had
two of the MRC-98s in service and we shortly added two more. The
MRC-98s were Air Force assets and the installation of the new systems
were managed by the GEEIA group out of Clark AFB. (as a radio amateur
I was delighted to see the Collins SSB radios that came with the new
98s!!)
September of 68 I was assigned as the NCOIC of the Korat Air Base ICWS
system. Was glad to get away from the 98's, they were big, green and
very cold! The air base IWCS facility was a 1.8 mile AN/FRC-109
(Lenkurt 76A) radio shot from the Jones Park facility. As one could
guess we had great reliability. Sixty channels of GE TCS-600 MUX rode
the FRC-109.
I stayed with the 442nd at Korat up until my discharge in Sept of
1970. After the Army I went to work with Michigan Bell (AT&T) as a
microwave radio repairman. The manager said I was the first new
employee that he ever knew to 'hit the ground working', meaning that I
was able to complete the work tasks on the radio and mux equipment
without any Bell System training. This was I'm sure due to the
excellent training and mentoring that I received while on active duty!
Spent 17 more years with Michigan Army National Guard. (SFC E-7
Communications Chief)
With the passing years my memory has grown a bit hazy but I do
remember my one involvement with the PAFCO group. A team of your
'installers' showed up one day with 'orders' to remove a bay of
circuit conditioning equipment (four wire amps)from the Korat Air Base
IWCS building. After a day sending and receiving a TTY messages to
confirm the orders we bust our butts for more then 24 hours rewiring a
LOT of circuits to clear that bay. I had a very unhappy crew until
the Thai Pizza and beer arrived, compliments of your 'de-installation'
team leader, a young 1st LT.
I've looked the membership list and I think I may know a few of the
names, but again the fog of 40 years may be at work. Will shortly
upload photos of the Jones Park complex. And as I noted, would love
to chat with anyone that had engineering and design input on the IWCS
system. In particular I'm interested in how the 'equal level patch
and test' concept came to be.
I apologize for the length of the message but again I'm very happy to
be a part of the the group and hope that I'll be able to share photos
and stories of interest to the members.
