Thanks Sir Stefan for pointing out that fighter practice is at the NW corner of Lomas and Carlisle--not Lomas and Candelaria, as I wrote below.  My apologies for the confusion/

Greetings to all al-Barran Court Dancers, Singers, Middle Eastern Dancers and Drummers,

The arts are alive and well in al-Barran!

Be prepared for court dancing at Mid-Winter and other upcoming al-Barran events, by attending court dance practices on Sundays at fighter practice park.  There will be court dancing at fighter practice this Sunday, 7/19 from 2-4pm, taught by Lady Beibhinn, who has also been the Blaiddwyn (UNM) Court Dance and Middle Eastern Dance Instructor for over a year.

Fighter practice is at Baatan Park, on the NW corner of Lomas and Candelaria.   All youth ages 7 and up are welcome at our court dance practices.

There will also be period singing practice this Sunday with Lady Anita, from 11-12:30pm.  Also Lady Veela has been having Middle Eastern dancing and drumming opportunities most Sundays at the park.

I have been traveling a lot to other events.   Lady Beibhinn, THLady Althea, Lady Melody, Lady Veela, Desarae and Amy have agreed to start teaching court dancing on Sundays.  We are going to try to have court dancing most Sundays, at a time to be determined, but around 2-4pm each Sunday.  We are extending our court dance practice time to later on Sunday to accommodate all heavy and light weapons fighters, who might want to dance.

Also this Sunday, there is an All-Thing, which is a populace meeting with our new Baron and Baroness at the park, 1-2pm, which we hope you can attend.

We will be posting future court dance practice times and dates to the al-Barran and alBarranMusic_Dance lists.  You can join the alBarranMusic_Dance List at:  http://www.yahoogroups.com/group/alBarranMusic_Dance/

Subject: [SCA-Dance] OT: Dancer Musician Compendium - Participant Request

Excuse the band-width and cross posting.  I'm trying to open this up to as many people as possible.

Hello All!

I am in the process of creating a (unofficial*) Dancer-Musician Compendium, in an effort to bring the Dance & Music Communities closer together.

As it stands travelling dancers and musicians have a difficult time obtaining information on:

* Practice locations
* Individuals in charge of practices
* Musical groups
* Local variations of dances and music

And, new dancers and musicians have may not have the contacts and resources to find:

* Research that is being done by their peers
* Valid books and/or websites that can help them with their own research

For these reasons, and to make both dancers and musicians more accessible within the SCA and the world at large, I would appreciate it if active dancers and musicians (of any skill level) would please complete the appropriate form(s), and email them to me at the email address provided on the forms.

The forms are located here: http://www.originsofplayforddance.com/dancer_musician_compendium.htm.

Please remember, I am not a web designer, so they are a little more crude than those found on the Yahoo Group, which can be downloaded and completed in-form.

To keep current on all updates and information, you are also invited to join the Dancer Musician Compendium Yahoo Group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dancer-musiciancompendium/

The current goal is to have the inital site up by the beginning of January.  Profiles will continue to be accepted after the website goes live.

I look forward to your support and participation.  Please feel free to forward this on to other dancers and musicians that you know, who may be interested in becoming involved.

Yours in Service,

Lady Jane Milford, OM

* It's called unofficial because, while allowed by the SCA, it is not an official document of the SCA.

Greetings from Elisa, editor of the Letter of Dance, and Gregory, her minion and Laurel!

We are trying to re-invigorate the Letter of Dance. We're hoping to find someone in each kingdom to facilitate finding authors and reviewers of Letter of Dance articles. You don't need to be a dance expert to be a facilitator -- you just need to be plugged in to the dance community of your kingdom. The workload will probably amount to only a couple of emails per week, after an initial flurry of activity.

For authors, we're looking to identify people who are actively doing reconstructions, or other stuff which would make good articles. Or perhaps someone who has already written an article published in a local or Kingdom newsletter.

For reviewers, we're looking for people who are well-read and well-studied in one or more of the main genres of dance. Some of the reviewers will also be potential authors. Reviewers don't need to be uber-experts already -- reviewing can be a great way to learn.

Are you interested in being the facilitator for your kingdom? If not, can you suggest someone else?

You can check out the existing website at:
http://www.pbm.com/~lindahl/lod/

Many thanks!

Subject: [blaiddwyn] places to get dance steps

It was requested that I post which sites I know of that one can go and get some of the steps to dances.  I have placed a couple that I know of below:
This one has my laurels info of dances that she has translated and written out for use
http://www.knightscrossing.org/html/en/judith.html

Some more dance sites I have used with varying levels of accuracy and clarity on steps:

http://sca.uwaterloo.ca/~praetzel/Joy_Jealousy/
http://www.pbm.com/~lindahl/dance.html
http://downloads.cynnabar.org/

A couple of the others I have are not working.  If you really want to know dance then the site below shows you some of the books that are best for the dances you are interested in:

http://mysite.verizon.net/vzeryeh4/dance/rendance.html#15cDesc

most dance people get the books and then create their own translations which is why there is debate and difference in some of the finer points of the dances and steps.  I am presently in the process of doing this and using the information to improve my own dance.  I hope this helps as right now with all I have on my plate I am not up to re doing these dances for our web page but will put that on the things to do list for this next year.

Subject: [AtenDance] Estrella War Ball set lists

The final set lists and sheet music for the Balls at Estrella War have been posted at:

http://members.cox.net/lejon/sca.html

This year there are three balls: a Beginners' Ball on Wednesday evening, the Grand Ball on Friday evening, and the Caroso Ball on Sunday afternoon.

The Grand Ball is where we get the most dancers and musicians.  Dances will be taught and dancers of all levels are welcome.  Any musicians who are interested are welcome to join us to provide live music.  There will be several rehearsal opportunities to choose from (times TBA) but you are welcome to play even if you are unable to make any rehearsals.

The Beginners' Ball is designed with beginners in mind and will introduce simple dances, taught by our ever-patient Mistress Jeanne.  Most of the dances will be repeated at the Grand Ball on Friday.  Any musicians willing to play standard repertoire on short notice, please contact me.

The Caroso Ball is a period-style ball where the dancers choose the dances.  A list of dances that the musicians are prepared to play will be provided, along with a "cheat sheet" of dance steps.  There will be no teaching at this ball; it is intended for dancers already familiar with the dances.  There will be little time to rehearse the extended list of potential dance music, so any musicians interested in playing the Caroso Ball will have to practice in advance.  Please contact me if you are a musician interested in playing this ball.

Estrella ball musicians! Wondering how fast to play the music? Trying to figure out the melody for an unfamiliar dance?

I've added some audio files to the Estrella War ball website, with comments about the music (number of repeats, things to watch out for) and a quick once-through of each melody line. Find the audio links next to each dance title at:

http://members.cox.net/lejon/sca.html

Please note that each file is a *very* quick once-through. It's just to give an idea of the melody and tempo. If the music is to be played two or three or more times, I just played it once. Some dances have only snippets of music with explanation. None of it is intended as a complete performance of dance music, but I hope it will help you get familiar with the music before we play it at War.

I look forward to seeing everyone then!

Jonete

Greetings to all dancers on this list.

I have been wanting to find for some time a picture that I remembered of an adult male and female dancer standing (dancing) side by side.  I don't think that there was any background to this picture at all and I don't need a picture with a background.

I am not an expert on period garb, but it seems they are dressed in French garb.  I think the man had short pants with hose (but that might be my poor memory).  And it could have been a picture of two Italian or even Elizabethan dancers.

What I need is a picture of a male and female dancer.  My persona is Italian Ren and that would be my prefered garb for the dancers in the picture.

Part of me thinks it was the cover (or illustration in) for a Caruso book or something like that.

I once had a file of dance pictures, but have lost that too.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you for your help

There will be a carpeted Pavilion near the Youth Hall for parents to watch and play with their infants to 4 year old children.  For children, ages 5-7, there will be lots of period games, boffer activities, field trips to Artisans Row, arts and crafts.  Youth ages 8-12 and Teens can choose from Page Academy classes, period games, adult A&S classes, martial arts training, guided tours to Artisans Row, a boffer tourney, a boffer melee, singing in the Battlemoor Youth Choir and performing arts classes in the bardic arts, magic and period singing.   For our youth and teens who want to be in service, there will be opportunities for running errands, running list cards at tournaments, helping out in the Youth Hall Pavilion and on the Youth Melee Field, being a Town Crier and heralding the Youth Boffer Tournament.

Parents and Volunteers at Youth Hall and the Youth Melee Field  --  We ask that each parent or guardian provide at least one hour of help at the Youth Hall or Youth Melee Field for each of their youth (ages 5-12), who participate in the youth activities and classes.    To volunteer to help with youth classes and activities, please sign up at the Youth Hall from 9-10am Thursday thru Sunday, so that we can schedule a time that matches you with your interests, or contact THL Jayne Barber at krege@... with the days and times you wish to volunteer.

Temporary Guardianships and Required Forms – Adults who bring to this event, minors for whom they are not the Parent or Legal Guardian  (as appointed by a court) are considered to be Temporary Guardians.  Temporary Guardians must bring for each minor, one copy each of the following three forms:  1) The notarized  “Child Guardian Consent Form”,   2) a notarizedMedical Authorization for Minors” form,   and    3) the “Minor's Consent to Participate and Hold Harmless Agreement” form.  Please note that all three of these forms must be signed by the youth’s parents or legal guardians in advance and their signatures on two of these forms must be notarized.   If at the time of check-in at the gate, the Temporary Guardian has a current SCA blue membership card for said minor, they do not have to present the “Minor’s Consent to Participate and Hold Harmless Agreement” form.         The Minors Consent to Participate and Hold Harmless Agreement form will be kept at the Gate and the Temporary Guardian will keep the other two forms.   For the Outlands Kingdom, minors are persons under 18 years of age residing in Texas, New Mexico, Colorado and Wyoming and under 19 years of age (unless married) residing in Nebraska.   These three required forms are available at  http://www.battlemoor.org/shedule/children-youth-and-teen-activities/child-forms/

Court Appointed Guardians –  Court Appointed Guardians need to bring a copy of their court documents to present at the Gate at the time of check-in with the minor.

Pre-Registration – We encourage you to pre-register for Battlemoor, so that we can have a better idea of the numbers of youth to prepare for.  No pre-payment is required.  You can pre-register at  http://www.battlemoor.org/registration/

Contact Jayne Barber at krege@...  if you have any questions or want to volunteer.

Please forward to your local group and other discussion lists.    Hope to see you at Battlemoor!

With great pleasure, I am forwarding this email to you.  I had the opportunity to attend Pati's Regency dance classes years ago and had a delightful time and I highly recommend this class on Sunday July 25.  For those not familiar with Regency Dance, this would be early 19th century dance.

Please be sure to bring shoes that have not been worn on the street -- such as ballet slippers, dance shoes, or houseshoes.

At the request of the Jane Austen book club and the JASNA, I'll be teaching Regency Dances at the DTSW Studio on July 25 from 2-5PM.  It would be wonderful to have some experienced dancers there, which is why I'm inviting you to join us!  No costumes, but ladies might enjoy the feel of skirts swirling about their limbs.

No street shoes, please.  This is to protect the studio floor from scratches.

The Dance Theatre Southwest (DTSW) studio is at 4200 Wyoming NE, Suite B-2, on the east side of Wyoming between Comanche and Montgomery.

As usual, a contribution of a dollar or two from each attendee would be welcome.

Thanks,   Pati

Lady Jayne,

I second, and third the suggestion!!!  Regency is English Country on steroids!!!!  Love it!, Love it!, Love it!!!!  Each year, Countess Ealasaid nic Churlain (now in Starkhafn) holds a Jane Austen Ball in Las Vegas.  We are SO fortunate!!!

If you like English Country, you'll love Regency!!!!

Greetings Estrella dancers and musicians!

Following are the proposed set lists for the balls at the next Estrella War. If you're unfamiliar with the ball schedule, we have our Grand Ball on Friday night, with an introductory "Beginners' Ball" on Wednesday. On Sunday afternoon we have a Caroso Ball, which is a dancers' choice ball with no fixed set list; instead, the musicians announce a list of dance music they're prepared to play, and the dancers choose from that list.

If anyone has any opinions about the set lists - things that should be added or deleted, particularly for the Caroso list - please let me know. The dance leaders have already tentatively approved the lists, but if we're missing popular dances that are likely to be requested at the Caroso Ball (or things on the list that no one would ever request!) I can make adjustments.

You can contact me at

Greetings, musicians (and dancers)! The set lists for the three balls at Estrella War XXVII have been announced. You can find the set lists, a description of the different balls, and complete sheet music at:

http://members.cox.net/lejon/sca.html

If you're a musician and you're going to be playing at the balls, especially at the Wednesday night Beginners' Ball or the Sunday Caroso Ball, please contact me at jonete_malisoun@.... I'm especially interested in getting musicians together to go over the music for these balls, as the time to practice for them is limited.

As always, anyone is welcome to play at the Friday night Grand Ball, even if you don't have a chance to come to any of the rehearsals.

Please let me know if you have any further questions or if you have any problems with the web page. Feel free to forward this information to any interested persons you know.

Subject: pennsicdance: [SCA-Dance] The Future of KWDS, part 3?

So, I was busy with dance floor deconstruction during the discussion at
Pennsic this year, but I got the quick synopsis afterwards, so for anyone
who hasn't heard, here it is: (oh, and please correct me if I am getting
anything wrong, or missing important details).

1. Deonna is planning on proceeding with a bid for 2013 for her KWDS in NY
state. (Concordia of the Snows)

2. Judith is proposing a European KWDS in 2015. (Germany I think)

And of course there is no change to the plan of Felice running her's in 2012
in Ohio.

I'm assuming that 2014 will be a year of rest, so everyone can save up for
Germany, but I didn't get the full details of the discussion. Likewise, I'm
not certain if anything was proposed / decided for 2016 or 2017. (for those
who plan their lives that far in advance) :P

Oh, and I have to still put this info up, but just to let people know, I do
have an unofficial KWDS website as a landing page for all these, and a
reference for old KWDS information.
http://kwds.org/

Number 7 is up there as well again, and though it needs to be cleaned up a
bit, the links are there for our compendium of class notes, in case anyone
wants them. (this includes some Gresley info that Emma and Martin have been
working on, as I know this came up in some discussions at recent events).
Though I think they will be making their full notes available soon too.

BTW, if anyone has any comments / suggestions regarding the generic KWDS
landing page, feel free to let me know. My eventual plans are to be able to
host future KWDS websites for people, if they'd like to save the money and
some setup, as well as hopefully refining what we've done so far to get a
better template going (so that we don't have to reinvent the wheel each
time, at least for class and teacher listings).

Oh, and this link will also go to the same place, since the name is somewhat
flexible:
http://kwdms.org/

Ok, I think that's about it for now / all I know. Feel free to discuss! :)
THL Darius the Dancer :) (I get to try out my shiny new title for a bit)

Subject: al-Barran Mid-Winter Court Dance Set lists for Saturday
jaynebarber_...
Send Email Send Email

Greetings to all Court Dancers!  I have good news and I have bad news.

The good news, is that we will have court dancing for 2 hours or maybe more at al-Barran's Mid-Winter this Saturday.

The bad news, is that we won't have our lovely Lady Beibhinn to lead us.

But she promises to be at Mid-Winter next year.

Blaiddwyn dancers, especially, look over this proposed court dance set list/plans and see if your favorites are on it.  As a group, you are the most experienced these days of our court dancers in al-Barran.

I don't have the extensive set of music that Bebhinn has, but I have a # of CDs that I am bringing.

If you love a dance that is not on the list below, contact me off-list  at krege@... by this Thursday evening and give me the name of the dance and I will see if I have the music for it.

Friday will be too late, as I will be going immediately after work to help in Belen with set up at the site for Mid-Winter and won't be returning home till Sunday.

This is a proposed Set list and can be changed, based on populace preferences.

If you want to teach and call/lead one or more of the dances below, please see me at Mid-Winter on Saturday, and I will put your name by the dance(s).

Since Beibhinn and I teach some of these dances differently, I would like to learn from you how Beibhinn has taught some of these dances--especially those that are not going to be called/taught/led by members of Blaiddwyn.  Please see me about this after court, but before the feast starts at 6pm.

Also, I am hoping that some of you will join us on Saturday at singing practice between 11am and 12:45 (court starts at 1pm) for those who wish to help us perform two of the "Santa Lucia" songs at the beginning of the feast (around 6pm).

I will have copies of the music and words.

I sent out additional information about these songs to these lists a few days ago, including a link to a midi of the music and links to performances on You Tube.

Blaiddwyn is holding their annual Winter Wolf event at UNM on Saturday, January 21 during the day and that evening they are sponsoring their annual Court Dance Masked Ball, also at UNM.

So mark your calendars and come dance with us then too!

I hope you will join us for some fun and dancing this Saturday evening at Mid-Winter!

For those on this Outlands Dance list and from out of town, this Court Dance Ball will be in Albuquerque, Sat. Jan. 21, hosted by our college, Blaiddwyn.  The SUB is located north of Popejoy Hall, near Yale and Central.

It is a masked ball and there will be a contest for the masks.

If you have suggestions for dances for the Ball please send them to our wonderful Dance Mistress, Lady Beibhinn today.

Blaiddwyn's Winter Wolf event is also being during the day on Saturday and I have included below, several of the announcements--which gives you more details about both the Winter Wolf event and the Ball.

The duck pond is next to the Zimmerman library on the main campus.  Turn south off of Lomas onto Yale at the light and go a few blocks--the duck pond and library will be right in front of you.

Good Gentles all,

I hope you are getting excited, for in one weeks time, Blaiddwyn will be the place to be! Lord Anzelm has already alerted you to the time and place of all the happenings, but I have a small correction to make.

Due to a bit of a scheduling fumble with the University, gate for the Masked ball will not open until 730PM. That's 730PM in UNM's A&B ballrooms, NOT 7!

Below is a tentative schedule for the ball festivities, as well as a list of dances that have been provided by Lady Beibhinn, our excellent dance mistress.

730PM - Gate Opens
9PM- Gate Closes
11PM - Announcement of Mask Contest Winners, Rose and Cock of the Ball. Tear Down
1130PM - SUB Closes

Dances: Single/double Bransle, Peas Bransle, washerwoman Bransle, Circle Waltz,
Queens Alman, Amoroso, Official Bransle, Gathering Peascods, Pinwheel, Heralds in Love, Black Nag, Ly Bens Distonys, Rostioli Giosio, Petite Reins, Hole in the Wall, Trenchmore, Posties Jig, Korabushka, Gelosisa, Petite Reins, Horses Bransle

Beibhinn has said she is open to suggestions for dances, so if you don't see your favorite on the list, be sure to let her know.

Also keep in mind that this event, like Winterwolf, is to benefit Road Runner food bank. There is NO SITE FEE, but we are accepting (and asking for!) donations of non-perishable food items for RRFB.

Additionally, we will be running a silent auction to benefit Blaiddwyn's travel/war fund. If you have any items you would like to donate to the auction (Garb, Fabric, Projects, Your hard labor ;D), please contact me off list at karndt@...

be decided on January 21st, 2012 at UNM at Winter Wolf.
There is no site fee, however Blaiddwyn is asking for canned food in donation to
the Roadrunner Food Bank, and any donations to the college are always greatly
appreciated. A lunch will occur; it will cost $10.00 and be from one of the fine
eateries around the University.

Winter Wolf - Blaiddwyn Provider competition

BLAIDDWYN PROVIDER COMPETITION

Behold the starving students of Blaiddwyn, tethered to their desks, lost in mammoth tomes, adrift in ancient philosophies, seeking wisdom, shunning the world and its earthly pleasures.  Their zeal is aflame, their dreams great, their purses poor, and their provender aquired by their frugality and swift wits by...
CONDIMENT PACKETS!!!!!!

Yes, the secret ingredient this year is condiment packets.  Although the College does not condone the pilfering of these packets from the good taverns that provide them to their... ahem... paying customers, you are allowed to use any ingredient that is found in "condiment packets".  It must be free (you usually pay for cream cheese or peanut butter and you pay for the ramen the seasoning packet comes in).  The packet ingredient can be hot sauce, lemon juice, sugar, relish, horseradish sauce, jelly, soy sauce, honey, butter, mustard, parmesan (so to speak) cheese, etc.  The is a HUGE range of ingredients out there for inspiration.

The packet ingredient must shine as the star of the dish.  The condiment ingredient must be in the title, i.e. "Salsa Chocolate Chip Cookies" or "Soy Sauce Brownies".  You can use more than one packet ingredient in the dish, such as "Mustard and Honey Tofu Snacks with Peanuts".   Do they still give free peanuts on airlines?  Oh well, you get the idea.

True, not particulary medieval, but this is done in the spirit of fun, creativity, ingenuity (all excellent student virtues) and honoring the age old legend of the starving student, not to mention the myriad stories of tomato soup made out of catsup packets and hot water.  PLEASE, NO HONEY PACKET MEAD, as this is a DRY site.   Non-alcoholic beverages are welcome entries however.

You entries will need to be snack or sweet variety, something that does not need refrigeration or heating, and cannot be construed as a meal/dish.  It can be assembled onsite, but cannot be cooked there.  (University rules, not mine).  Please have a list of ingredients with your entry.

This all takes place on Saturday, January 21st  at the University of New Mexico Duck Pond, Albuquerque, NM.  Entry registration and judging times will be announced at a later date.

Please let me know if you are entering so we can ensure sufficient room for provender display and judging.  There is no deadline and actually, you can just show up with your goodies.  Letting me know just makes my life easier. ;)

Greetings Dancers and Musicians

Opportunities for dancing/playing this month Feb 25 at Chieftains!
