Greetings to the dancers of the Outlands from Master Trahaearn ap
Ieuan, autocrat of Known World Dance Symposium 2007.

It is my joy to invite all those interested in dance within the
Society to come to An Tir this summer for the sixth biennial Known
World Dance Symposium. The event will be held June 28 – July 1, 2007
in Seattle's University District.

To register, or just to learn more about the event, please visit
http://kwds2007.earlydance.info/. Pre-registration is now open with a
special early discount through March 15. Proposals for workshops and
performances are now being accepted. An outline of the schedule is
also available. More information about the site and lodging will be
posted soon. We expect that registration for on-site lodging will be
available in March.

Already the dancers, musicians, teachers, and researchers who have
registered for KWDS represent seven kingdoms: Aethelmearc, An Tir,
Ansteorra, the East, Meridies, the Middle, and the West.

Please forward this information to your local dance lists - and when
doing so, please cc kwds.lists@... so I can avoid lists
getting multiple copies of the announcement.

Thanks for your support, and I hope to see you in An Tir this summer!

Given that dancing is an important skill for courtiers, I thought
this announcement from sca-west would be interesting to westdance:

| Greetings West Kingdom, from Viscountess Genevieve de Vendome, OL
|
| I am starting the "School for the Courtier." The idea behind the
| School is to create well-rounded Courtiers (i.e. 16th C personas).
| The original (primary?) target audience for the School are those in
| our rapier community that are interested in pursuing 16th C personas,
| but is open to anyone with a serious interest in the 16th C (and,
| ideally, a desire to incorporate this knowlege into their SCA
| experiance).
|
| Not only should 16th C gentlemen (and ladies, in our Enlightened SCA)
| be proficient at the blade, but they should also be able to play
| games (i.e. gamble), dance, write, entertain, and advise his/her
| companions and superiors when called upon to do so. I am willing to
| provide teachers and host classes on these and other relevant topics.
| I live in Livermore, CA, which is pretty easy to get to both from the
| greater SF Bay area and from greater Sacremento.
|
| If you are interested in participating in the School, you can sign up
| for our newly-created Yahoo Group called "CourtierSchool". This Yahoo
| group will be primarily for planning, discussing, and schedualling
| classes. However, we probably will post bibliographies and class
| notes in future as well.
|
| YIS,
| Genevieve

I use to have the music CD that was sold at dance colligium (I know I
spelled that wrong)a few years back and lent it out to someone who
never returned it :( So now I'm trying to replace all the standard
music for the dances we love doing here..... Does anyone have a copy of
that CD (or any other dance music) I could borrow or that could burn me
a copy or has some of the songs as MP3s I could download... I'm
teaching some of the dances to an acting troupe next month so I'm in a
pinch

Dear Anora,

I tried to send a reply, but apparently it didn't go thru.

Do you remember where the dance collegium was held that you got the CD?

What local group are you with?

What dances are you trying to find music for?

Anora,

A lot of SCA dance music can be downloaded here:

http://sca.uwaterloo.ca/Music/search.cgi?s=&MP3s=List+all+MP3s

One caveat: MOST of these are free for non-profit use, but a couple of them
(the "Joy and Jealosy" tracks, for one, if I remember correctly) request that
royalties be paid. PLEASE make sure to read and follow the rules for use -- I
don't want anybody to get in trouble!

If you can afford to spend a little money, I highly recommend the "Musica
Subterranea" CDs.

http://www.musicasub.org/

You can also come talk to me or Guillaume at an event, and we can give you other
recommendations. :)

I believe it was from unser hafen.... but I'll take anything

the ones I can think of off the top of my head that I know are
Hole in the wall, black nag, circle waltz, Whirligig, Washerwoman's Bransle, Rufty Tufty, Picking of Sticks, Officals' Bransle, Korobushka, Juice of the Barley, Jenny Pluck Pears, Hearts Ease, Gathering Peascods, Chairanzula Bransle (Maltese), Black Alman, Spagnoletta, War Bransle, Horse's Bransle, Ballo del Fiore, Female Sailor

but again anything would help (I am always willing to learn new dances!)
and I wish they would give me live musicians but all we are going to get is a cd player (ah well)

thanks for all your help!!

Greetings to all Court Dancers and Musicians in the Outlands,

There will be a Grand Ball (court dance ball) on Friday evening, Feb. 15 in the Grand Court Pavilion.

For musicians wishing to play at this ball, there is sheet music available on-line and a schedule of the Estrella War Ball music practices at       http://members.cox.net/stephanie.reiley/

The dances planned for the Grand Ball are also available at the above url, however, no dance instructions have yet been posted at this website.

In the past, most dances were also reviewed/taught before each dance was danced at the Grand Ball.

There is usually court dancing Saturday and Sunday evenings and court dance classes during the day as well.

Everyone within driving distance is welcome to attend!!

This Friday the Citadel of the Southern Pass will be holding a dance
practice from 7 to 8 at the Desert Moon Academy of the Arts on
Belvidere at Westwind.

This week's practice is European court dance. Lady Aine will be
leading us through a selection of dances as we prepare for the Grand
Ball at Estrella.

Future dance practices will be held on Feb. 22 and Feb. 29.

We pay $15 an hour for the room, and split the expense among all the
dancers attending. It is an actual dance studio floor, so no street
shoes are allowed.

Greetings.  The musicians who played for the Grand Ball at Estrella
expressed an interest in communicating with one another about future
balls.  To this end I have created a new Yahoo group, estrellaball.
The purpose of the group will be primarily to discuss next year's set

hope to have dancers and dance masters participate, and we can discuss
other relevant topics as well.  I invite anyone interested to visit

Good day, everyone; the end of February is nigh, and this Friday
evening is the last night that I have reserved the studio at Desert
Moon for dance practice. I would like to hear whether folks would like
to continue dance practice at Desert Moon for March, so I can reserve
the space.

Someone has floated the idea of having dance practice outdoors, in
conjunction with fighter practice, once the weather is more reliably
pleasant. Until then, should we continue where we are, Friday nights,
6:30 to 8:30?

I also would like to hear from those of you interested in ME dance and
drumming; if there are not enough of us "Middle Easterners" to share
the cost of the room, I would prefer to just meet every other week for
European dance practice. (Second and fourth Fridays, so those who wish
to come from Happy Valley won't have to choose between dancing and
business meetings?)

This is the time to throw in your two-cents worth. (Surely you can
spare two measly cents!)

ME dancers, we have the studio this Friday from 6:30 to 8:30, so bring
your drums, zils, CDs of your favorite dance music, and your happy
selves, and we'll see if we've got enough folks to keep the party
going four Fridays a month.

Danke,

Lilje

Greetings to the Court Dance lovers and instructors of the Outlands, from Lady Jayne Barber, a court dance instructor in al-Barran.

I am delighted to report that there appears to be a resurrgence of interest in court dancing in the Outlands in the past year.

The college of Blaiddwyn held a court dance ball in October and has twice a month dance practices on Monday nights during the regular school year.
al-Barran has twice a month dance practices at fighter practice on Sundays.
Caerthe has active dance instructors and supporters in Mistress Arwen and THLord Guillaume.
Fontaine has shown an interest recently in renewing dance.
Citadel held dance practices prior to their recent Baronial Investiture in preparation for their dancing at the event.
Unser Hafen will have dance classes and a ball at their upcoming Baronial Investiture.
I know that in the past Dragonsspine held regular dance practices--I just don't know what they are doing present.
I think Caer Galen has held dance practices, again I just don't know anything current.

In preparation for adding court dance information to the Outlands website, I would like to hear from you to update the information you have regarding Court Dancing in the Outlands.  Below is the information I have so far.

Please help us spread and support court dancing in the Outlands, by responding to me and this list with the information you have about court dancing in your area--regarding events, A&S collegiums, dance instructors and dance practices.

Greetings to all Court dancers in the Outlands from Jayne Barber, al-Barran

The Calontir Dance List recently added two files regarding their upcoming Crystal Ball, which I am attaching.

The two files require Excel and Microsoft Word to open.

I highly recommend the Excel document, as it is an excellent resource listing the type of dance (bransle, pavanne, English Country, etc.) for each dance, the source for each dance (Arbeau, Playford, SCA, etc.), the year or century each dance was published, the number of dancers required to do the dance, the setup for the dance (line, circle, square, etc.) and the level of difficulty (easy, intermediate, advance).  There are 66 dances on the excel document.

The word document is simply the tentative ball list--from which the excel document was created.

If someone is teaching and/or leading court dancing in your local group, please send me their contact information.

Enjoy and happy dancing.

Jayne

Greetings musicians,

The practice schedule for the Estrella War Balls is now available.

Thursday 2/12, 10am - 12pm: Grand Ball music practice
Thursday 2/12, 7-9 pm: Grand Ball dress rehearsal
Friday 2/13, 10am - 12pm: Grand Ball music practice
Friday 2/13, 1-3pm: Caroso Ball music practice

All rehearsals are in the Grand Court Pavilion.

The two morning practices are shared with the dancers, either in
different halves of the pavilion, or with the musicians accompanying
the dancers, depending on how the rehearsals go. The Thursday evening
dress rehearsal is a combined rehearsal for musicians, dancers, and
dance masters.

The Collegium schedule indicates that there are two back-to-back music
practices on Friday, 10-12 and 12-2. I will go over the music with
anyone who shows up at 12, but the main practice for the Grand Ball
music will be at 10. I'm hoping that anyone who can play for the
Caroso Ball will stay to practice the music after getting some lunch.

All the music is available at http://members.cox.net/lejon/sca.html

Please contact me with any questions: jonete_malisoun@...

IS,
Jonete

Greetings Unto One and All!

I have just been notified that dance fell off the face of the Gatebook!  Fear Not!  There will be dance practices each day at Estrella War and the information will be published at the Arts and Sciences Collegium area, and on the grand schedule but it's not in the Gatebook.

Each day, beginning on Wednesday, from 10:00 AM until Noon, we will have dance practice under the Grand Court pavilion.  On the days we are able to coordinate with the musicians, we'll practice ~those~ to dance along with them once they are ready with the music.  On the days we may be interupting music practice, we'll just dance our way round under the Aten Sun.  Come Saturday and Sunday, we'll be most likely be in another area because of already scheduled activities under the Grand Court pavilion but dance details WILL BE POSTED at the A&S Collegium area.

Remember, too, we are invited to dance at the musicians practice on Thursday evening, GRAND BALL on Friday evening, and we'll be practicing for the Caroso Ball on Sunday afternoon.

To view the dance lists the musicians are preparing for see Lady Jonete's notes at:  http://members.cox.net/lejon/sca.html  Don't forget your dancing shoes (think tennis shoes as we may be on concrete and/or grass) and most of all,

Good War to You!

Hi there:

Arwen and I intend to go to Known World Dance this year. Obviously, we haven't
made detailed plans yet (we'll probably fly). If anyone else is interested in
going, let us know! Maybe we can plan an Outlandish get-together?

If you have any questions about what KWDS is like, we'd be glad discuss it.
We've been to four of the previous six (missed New Orleans and Australia).
There's lots of dancing, lots of classes, and lots of dancers from all over the
Known World (what else would you expect?).

For those who haven't heard, we have just received word that the Known World
Dance (and Music) Symposium VII is now Fully Approved!

It will be running from about 6 pm Thursday July 2nd, until about 5:30 pm
Sunday July 5th, 2009, at McMaster University, in Hamilton, Ontario
(between Toronto and Niagara Falls).

Pre-registration should be opening shortly (by mid-Feb), at which point
we'll send out more info. But at a glance, pre-reg for the weekend will
cost around $50, not including food or accomodations.

Otherwise, the dorm beds are actually Comfortable this time around, and the
dorms are by far the closest place to stay to the class buildings. You're
looking at around $55 per night for a single room, or around $45 per night
per person for double occupancy. Otherwise, there are hotels a short drive
/ transit ride away (and they aren't too expensive, since we aren't right in
Toronto), or there are potentially people to crash with around town, though
we are still coordinating this.

For travel, you can fly into the Hamilton airport, or to Toronto, or you may
wish to fly to Buffalo (may be cheaper for people in the US already), but
I'm not sure about transit from Buffalo (you may need to rent a car for that
one, but you shouldn't need to for the closer airports). Of course if you
are driving, then you will want to cross the border into Canada either at
Buffalo for those from the east, or at Sarnia or Windsor for those from the
West.

PASSPORTS!!! If you are not from Canada, You will need a Passport for each
traveller to be able to attend the event. (unfortunately, these rules are
set to come into effect just before our event date). Oh, and one tip: When
crossing the border with a car full of SCAdians, try to make sure you know
everyone's Mundane names, and that the driver knows where you each are
coming from. It looks a little weird when you don't know this info. :)

Other than that, we'll be getting more info up on the website (And the
pre-reg info) over the coming days. Here is the address again:
http://www.kwdsvii.org/
However, my host has been having some issues just in the last few days.
Should be resolved shortly, but here is a backup address in case the first
one doesn't work:
http://www.kwdsvii.plcengineering.net/
(sorry, I'm not trying to advertise businesses or anything. That company
name is out of date / inactive now regardless)

I'll be sending out an email to all the teachers I have on my initial list
shortly. (We have quite a few) However, feel free to let me know if you
would like to teach, and I will add you to the list.

I hope this helps everyone's vacation plans. Yay Dancing!

Greetings to all court dancers and musicians in the Outlands from Jayne Barber (al-Barran)

Below is the announcement about the Kingdom A&S and Kingdom Queen's Prize event that will be held on Sat. April 11 in al-Barran (Albuquerque, NM).   I have also included a one page word processed document that is a copy of the event annoucement below.

In the past, both Kingdom A&S and Queen's Prize had performance categories, which included court dance.  Many years ago, I had a group of six enter Queen's Prize, where we performed Whirligig.

For Kingdom A&S, per the Kingdom A&S website the performance categories are:
V. Performing Arts
1.      Dramatic Reading
2.      Poetry
3.      Prose
4.      Instrumental Music
5.      Vocal Music
6.      Dance – court, ethnic, etc.
7.      Miscellaneous Performances

For Queen's Prize, no categories are listed.  However, the info on Queen's Prize, states that it welcomes all levels of artisans in all categories.

So if you would like to perform in either competition and need a partner, individuals to fill out the places in your set, or help with dances or music, please contact me at krege@....

I update it when (1) a URL stops working, (2) people email me updates,
or (3) updates get mentioned here. Because of this discussion, I've
updated several of the entries. But you are correct: since people tend
to leave out-of-date webpages in place when they create new guild
websites, my dead URL check is not enough to keep the list fresh.
