Welcome Annabelle to the Outlands!

I am delighted that you have an interest in dancing.

Where will you be living?

There are some wonderful court dancing opportunities in the Outlands.

In al-Barran (Albuquerque, NM) -- I am Lady Jayne Barber and I have been teach
court dancing twice a month for the last 8 1/2 years in al-Barran. Lady Dovey,
Lord Canus, and Lady Melody also teach court dancing with me at our court dance
practice twice a month on Sundays at fighter practice. Then twice a month on
Monday evenings at the college, UNM, Lady Dovey teaches court dancing. We are
blessed.

There are wonderful and very knowledgable court dance instructors, who are also
my mentors and dear friends, THLord Guillaume and Mistress Arwen, who teach and
lead court dancing in Caerthe (Denver, Colorado)
Master Alwyn leads dancing in Dragonsspine (Colorado Springs, Colorado).
Cumarra (spelling and title?) I was told this weekend, runs court dancing in
Caer Galen (Boulder County, Colorado)
Lady Aine is the main person to talk to about court dancing in Citadel (El Paso,
Texas)
There are a few others also in the Kingdom and we are helping to spread and
mentor others in court dancing.
There is interest in having court dancing in Drygestan (Santa Fe, NM) and
Fontaine (Farmington, NM)

If someone on this list, knows of other court dance instructors or those who
lead dancing at events, please share this information with us.

So welcome to the Outlands and to our court dance discussion list. You are also
welcome to join the al-Barran Musicians and Court Dance list at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/alBarranMusic_Dance/ We post our al-Barran
dance and musicians practices on this list, as well as other valuable resources
that we find from time to time. Our Musicians group, Scorpion Scales, was
formed initially to provide live court dancing music at events.

Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or need anything.
My email address is krege@... and my home phone # is 505-293-7453. I may
be off-line starting May 23 till about the end of June--except, sporadically to
check my emails. I don't have a computer at home till the end of June and it
depends if I get a summer school job--so I might not be able to respond to any
emails right away.

Yours in service,
Lady Jayne Barber

in between stirring a pot or 2.

Dear Annabelle,

Then you are so lucky! You will be near court dancing with Arwen & Guilluame in
Denver, Master Alwyn (about 1 hour south) and Cumarra (less than 1 hour north).
I hope you have a very safe drive.

Greetings! I'm Celestria macAilpein (or was, I just
haven't picked out a new name yet). I played in
UnserHafen for four years and am living in
Dragonsspine now, but haven't had a chance to play at
all lately due to work.

I'm hoping I can find a way to make it to dance
practice from time to time, though!

Greetings unto the lists! I apologize for any cross-posting you may receive. My name is Lady Aedhagan and I am from Barony Fontaine dans Sable. As you may know we are having 12th Night in conjunction with our Baronial Investiture Jan 20th.
Our first Baronial Investiture with the many thanks to all those who donated items brought in remarkable tribute to help the Crown. I am, once again, running another silent auction.
Funds from this will be donated to the Outlands Royal and Fontaine’s Baronial travel funds. This is a great reason to raise money and support our Kingdom. Anything that someone is willing to donate to this auction would be a great help. Garb, jewelry, herbs, tools, bags, accessories, anything you can come up with...
If you have anything or would be willing to work on something for this cause, please contact me at aedhagan@... and I would surely appreciate it. If you would be willing to donate things and need help getting it here, email me and we find a way! Thank you in advance for all of your support!

Ages 11 to 17    $5.00 or donation of new unwrapped toy (value of $5 or more)
            Age 10 and under     Free

We hope that you will join us at our Arts and Sciences Collegium.  There will be many classes in the Scribal Arts, Fiber Arts, Needle Arts, Costuming, Jewelry, Heraldry, Cooking and Food, Performing Arts and much more!

The Gate opens at 8am and we hope you will join us early.  The Honorable Dona Theresa Cabeza de Vaca, our Feast Coordinator, will be providing you with a wonderful light breakfast of assorted mini muffins and bagels, breakfast pastries (eggs, onion, bacon, cheese, etc), assorted fruit tarts, fresh brewed coffee, assorted teas, apple cider and hot chocolate.  For our Donations Luncheon, Theresa is planning a wonderful spread including vegetable crudités with dressing, fruit and cheese tray, lentil salad, cornish pastries, vegetarian pastries, a chicken stew and a vegetarian stew served in bread bowls, assorted teas, coffee and lemonade.  We will also be serving the desserts prepared by the populace for our Desserts Competition. If you want to know more about the luncheon menu and ingredients, please contact our Feast Coordinator, The Honorable Dona Theresa Cabeza de Vaca  at too_be_free@.... Those wishing to enter the Desserts  Competition, must turn in their desserts to Lady Thalauriana, our Desserts Competition Coordinator, between 10am and 11:30am in the main hall.  You will also need to provide her with a card with all of the ingredients in your dessert.  If your dessert is a period dessert, please also provide information from your research.

Baroness Monika the Fair will be choosing the al-Barran A&S Champion from the displays by our Artisans and Scientists.  Those wishing to be considered to become our new baronial A&S Champion may display your A&S work in any manner that you wish.  Documentation for each item in your display is required (up to a maximum of 4 pages).  You should answer in your documentation the questions of Who, What, Where, When and Why.  Please include in your documentation your name, what category you are entering in, the title of your entry, what is it made of and how, references, and when, where and how would it have been used.  Please bring a tablecloth for your display, preferably 6-8’ to cover the wide width of the display tables. You need to check in with your display with Lady Bianca, our A&S Displays Coordinator, between 8:30am and 10am.

We also want to showcase our Artisans and Scientists at our Collegium in several ways.  Our Scribes in the Outlands are very dedicated and have a reputation throughout the known world for their beautiful original scrolls for each award handed out in the Outlands.  We want to honor them and we are asking our scribes and our populace to bring your scrolls to the Collegium, so that we can display their amazing work.  We will have a protective covering for your scrolls.

We also want to honor our youth and adults who do not wish to compete for Baronial champion, but still would like to show off the A&S projects they have been working on.  So we will have “Make It!  Bring It!  Show It! Displays”  These displays will be divided into several categories.  Children: age 0-6, Youth: age 7-12  and Teens: age 13-17. There will also be an adult category, ages 17 & up, for the A&S displays and teens may have the choice of showing in the teen category or the adult category. No documentation is required for any of these displays. Projects do not have to be complete.  This is a good way for people to connect in different areas of interest.  Just come and show off what you have been doing.  Everyone having a A&S display will need to check in with Lady Bianca or her A&S deputy, Lady Kimberly between 8:30am and 10am.  Since we are hoping for lots of displays, we also ask that you bring a 6-8’ tablecloth for your display area if you wish to display on a table, as we will be using wide tables for displays.  However, you may display your A&S projects in any way that you wish.   All A&S displays will be in the Main Hall at the east end of the campus and there will be a unloading zone in the east parking lot next to this Hall for those bringing displays and borrowed tables.

In addition to our many A&S classes, our A&S Displays, our scrumptious breakfast, the desserts competition and our wonderful donations lunch, there will also be a Heraldic Consultation Table, a Youth Room with classes and activities and a Court Dance Ball.   Our Schedule is  7-8am Set Up;    8am Gate Opens and Breakfast;    8:30am to 10am  A&S Displays accepted by Lady Bianca and Lady Kimberly;  10-11:30am Desserts Competition entrants turn in desserts for judging to Lady Thalauriana;  10am to noon and 1-5pm Heraldic Consultation Table;   9am to noon and 1-5pm A&S Classes;   8:30am to 5pm A&S Displays by al-Barran A&S Champion entrants, our scribes, youth, adults and newcomers;   9am to noon and 1 to 5pm Youth Room open and Youth Activities and Classes;   noon to 1pm  Donations Lunch by The Honorable Dona Theresa Cabeza de Vaca and her crew with entertainment or lunch on your own;   5pm Closing Court and announcement of our new A&S Champion;    5:30-7pm Dinner on your own;    7-9pm Court Dance Ball;  9-9:30pm Clean Up.  All activities will take place in the Main Hall at the east end of the school campus, except for the Youth Room and the A&S Classes.

No advance reservations are necessary.  Checks given at the gate should be made payable to SCA-al-Barran.  If you or your friends need crash space or special assistance, such as a handicapped or saved parking space in the east parking lot, please contact the Autocrat, Lady Jayne.

A schedule of the classes and descriptions of the classes will be posted to discussion lists and on the event website at   http://al-barran.org/dayofas06.  Please share this information with your friends and we hope to see you at the Collegium!

That last site (saers.com) has a bunch of vocal stuff. Granted, they
arranged it for recorders, but it's got all the words, too. And it's free.
(Tons of John Dowland, for example.) I think it would work great for vocal
groups.

And here's the Choral Public Domain Library:
http://www.cpdl.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

I would stay away from Kinkos, etc. I've been really impressed with a group
that's an offshoot of the St. Louis Recorder Society, called Easy Early
Music. It's run by a lovely woman named Joyce; she's dedicated to helping
people learn how to play the recorder. She put together a web page with
music she finds from the free sites listed above (and maybe others, too),
and people can go and download what they need for that month. It's very
convenient.

Here's her web site: http://easyearlymusic.org/

Yay music!

Greetings!

I'm delighted to announce that for the fourth year Estrella War will be hosting it's Grand Ball!   This event features some of the best live musicians and dance masters from the Known World.  Last year the ball had over twenty-five musicians and six kingdoms represented.

In an ongoing effort to recruit musicians and dancers from outside  Atenveldt, we would like to circulate the music ahead of time.   The  set list, dance steps, and arrangements can be found at the following link:

http://home.comcast.net/~stephanie.maynard/

This year we will be hosting open practices for musicians on  Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday mornings from 10 AM - 12 PM in the  A&S area.  If you would like to play at the ball, please plan to attend the practice if at all possible.

The Grand Ball will be Friday night starting at approximately 7:30 PM  in the Grand Court Pavilion.

Please bring your dancing shoes and be prepared to have a wonderful  time!

Dame Selene, Atenveldt

(Please feel free to forward this post to other lists you deem  appropriate.)

Given that dancing is an important skill for courtiers, I thought
this announcement from sca-west would be interesting to westdance:

| Greetings West Kingdom, from Viscountess Genevieve de Vendome, OL
|
| I am starting the "School for the Courtier." The idea behind the
| School is to create well-rounded Courtiers (i.e. 16th C personas).
| The original (primary?) target audience for the School are those in
| our rapier community that are interested in pursuing 16th C personas,
| but is open to anyone with a serious interest in the 16th C (and,
| ideally, a desire to incorporate this knowlege into their SCA
| experiance).
|
| Not only should 16th C gentlemen (and ladies, in our Enlightened SCA)
| be proficient at the blade, but they should also be able to play
| games (i.e. gamble), dance, write, entertain, and advise his/her
| companions and superiors when called upon to do so. I am willing to
| provide teachers and host classes on these and other relevant topics.
| I live in Livermore, CA, which is pretty easy to get to both from the
| greater SF Bay area and from greater Sacremento.
|
| If you are interested in participating in the School, you can sign up
| for our newly-created Yahoo Group called "CourtierSchool". This Yahoo
| group will be primarily for planning, discussing, and schedualling
| classes. However, we probably will post bibliographies and class
| notes in future as well.
|
| YIS,
| Genevieve

I use to have the music CD that was sold at dance colligium (I know I
spelled that wrong)a few years back and lent it out to someone who
never returned it :( So now I'm trying to replace all the standard
music for the dances we love doing here..... Does anyone have a copy of
that CD (or any other dance music) I could borrow or that could burn me
a copy or has some of the songs as MP3s I could download... I'm
teaching some of the dances to an acting troupe next month so I'm in a
pinch
thanks so much

Dear Anora,

I tried to send a reply, but apparently it didn't go thru.

Do you remember where the dance collegium was held that you got the CD?

What local group are you with?

What dances are you trying to find music for?

Anora,

A lot of SCA dance music can be downloaded here:

http://sca.uwaterloo.ca/Music/search.cgi?s=&MP3s=List+all+MP3s

One caveat: MOST of these are free for non-profit use, but a couple of them
(the "Joy and Jealosy" tracks, for one, if I remember correctly) request that
royalties be paid. PLEASE make sure to read and follow the rules for use -- I
don't want anybody to get in trouble!

If you can afford to spend a little money, I highly recommend the "Musica
Subterranea" CDs.

http://www.musicasub.org/

You can also come talk to me or Guillaume at an event, and we can give you other
recommendations. :)

Arwen

I believe it was from unser hafen.... but I'll take anything

the ones I can think of off the top of my head that I know are
Hole in the wall, black nag, circle waltz, Whirligig, Washerwoman's Bransle, Rufty Tufty, Picking of Sticks, Officals' Bransle, Korobushka, Juice of the Barley, Jenny Pluck Pears, Hearts Ease, Gathering Peascods, Chairanzula Bransle (Maltese), Black Alman, Spagnoletta, War Bransle, Horse's Bransle, Ballo del Fiore, Female Sailor

but again anything would help (I am always willing to learn new dances!)
and I wish they would give me live musicians but all we are going to get is a cd player (ah well)

thanks for all your help!!

I participated in this choir and it's choir practices at Estrella War a couple of years ago.

It was a lovely experience, which I very much recommend.

Greetings to all Court Dancers and Musicians in the Outlands,

There will be a Grand Ball (court dance ball) on Friday evening, Feb. 15 in the Grand Court Pavilion.

For musicians wishing to play at this ball, there is sheet music available on-line and a schedule of the Estrella War Ball music practices at       http://members.cox.net/stephanie.reiley/

The dances planned for the Grand Ball are also available at the above url, however, no dance instructions have yet been posted at this website.

In the past, most dances were also reviewed/taught before each dance was danced at the Grand Ball.

There is usually court dancing Saturday and Sunday evenings and court dance classes during the day as well.

In service,
Lady Jayne Barber

Everyone within driving distance is welcome to attend!!

This Friday the Citadel of the Southern Pass will be holding a dance
practice from 7 to 8 at the Desert Moon Academy of the Arts on
Belvidere at Westwind.

This week's practice is European court dance. Lady Aine will be
leading us through a selection of dances as we prepare for the Grand
Ball at Estrella.

Future dance practices will be held on Feb. 22 and Feb. 29.

We pay $15 an hour for the room, and split the expense among all the
dancers attending. It is an actual dance studio floor, so no street
shoes are allowed.

Greetings.  The musicians who played for the Grand Ball at Estrella
expressed an interest in communicating with one another about future
balls.  To this end I have created a new Yahoo group, estrellaball.
The purpose of the group will be primarily to discuss next year's set
list and get the music to the musicians well in advance, but I also
hope to have dancers and dance masters participate, and we can discuss
other relevant topics as well.  I invite anyone interested to visit
groups.yahoo.com/group/estrellaball and send a request to join.

Good day, everyone; the end of February is nigh, and this Friday
evening is the last night that I have reserved the studio at Desert
Moon for dance practice. I would like to hear whether folks would like
to continue dance practice at Desert Moon for March, so I can reserve
the space.

Someone has floated the idea of having dance practice outdoors, in
conjunction with fighter practice, once the weather is more reliably
pleasant. Until then, should we continue where we are, Friday nights,
6:30 to 8:30?

I also would like to hear from those of you interested in ME dance and
drumming; if there are not enough of us "Middle Easterners" to share
the cost of the room, I would prefer to just meet every other week for
European dance practice. (Second and fourth Fridays, so those who wish
to come from Happy Valley won't have to choose between dancing and
business meetings?)

This is the time to throw in your two-cents worth. (Surely you can
spare two measly cents!)

ME dancers, we have the studio this Friday from 6:30 to 8:30, so bring
your drums, zils, CDs of your favorite dance music, and your happy
selves, and we'll see if we've got enough folks to keep the party
going four Fridays a month.

Danke,

Lilje

Greetings to the Court Dance lovers and instructors of the Outlands, from Lady Jayne Barber, a court dance instructor in al-Barran.

I am delighted to report that there appears to be a resurrgence of interest in court dancing in the Outlands in the past year.

The college of Blaiddwyn held a court dance ball in October and has twice a month dance practices on Monday nights during the regular school year.
al-Barran has twice a month dance practices at fighter practice on Sundays.
Caerthe has active dance instructors and supporters in Mistress Arwen and THLord Guillaume.
Fontaine has shown an interest recently in renewing dance.
Citadel held dance practices prior to their recent Baronial Investiture in preparation for their dancing at the event.
Unser Hafen will have dance classes and a ball at their upcoming Baronial Investiture.
I know that in the past Dragonsspine held regular dance practices--I just don't know what they are doing present.
I think Caer Galen has held dance practices, again I just don't know anything current.

In preparation for adding court dance information to the Outlands website, I would like to hear from you to update the information you have regarding Court Dancing in the Outlands.  Below is the information I have so far.

Please help us spread and support court dancing in the Outlands, by responding to me and this list with the information you have about court dancing in your area--regarding events, A&S collegiums, dance instructors and dance practices.

Greetings to all Court dancers in the Outlands from Jayne Barber, al-Barran

The Calontir Dance List recently added two files regarding their upcoming Crystal Ball, which I am attaching.

The two files require Excel and Microsoft Word to open.

I highly recommend the Excel document, as it is an excellent resource listing the type of dance (bransle, pavanne, English Country, etc.) for each dance, the source for each dance (Arbeau, Playford, SCA, etc.), the year or century each dance was published, the number of dancers required to do the dance, the setup for the dance (line, circle, square, etc.) and the level of difficulty (easy, intermediate, advance).  There are 66 dances on the excel document.

The word document is simply the tentative ball list--from which the excel document was created.

If someone is teaching and/or leading court dancing in your local group, please send me their contact information.

Enjoy and happy dancing.

Jayne
