We'd be delighted to see you.

Of course, on a kingdom list such as this, it's best to let us know where abouts
you are. Since you mentioned the Black Friars Troupe, I assume you are in the
Caerthe (Denver) area.

Caerthen Dance Practice is on semi-hiatus for the summer. You just missed our
second July practice, and our next practice isn't until August 18 (unless I find
an additional site on short notice). Things do pick up, though, after that.
Our schedule is posted on line at:

http://home.earthlink.net/~smcclune/dance.html

Hope this helps.

This automated message is outdated - the library is closed this week (a
change that happened after we signed up for the room). We are instead
scheduled for Tuesday, August 31 at the Englewood Public Library.

The updated schedule is on the Caerthen Dance Practice web page at:

http://home.earthlink.net/~smcclune/dance.html

Our next practice will be at the proto/pseudo (not incipient) south canton A & S
meeting Wednesday, August 18 at Despôtissa Eirene's home in Centennial, CO.

Forwarded from the SCA dance list:

-------- Original Message --------
Dear Friends,

It is my great pleasure to announce (at long last!) the publication of The Book
of Dance, vol. 5. This volume contains articles, reviews, reconstructions,
choreographies, and parodies from issues 33-40 of The Letter of Dance, an
newsletter created by and for the SCA Dance Community. Subjects for this volume
include a lively discussion music theory as it relates to reels, period middle
eastern dance, several articles on the Gresley Manuscript, reconstructions of La
Volta, a new ECD choreography, a choreography for a canario, as well as some
excellent reviews of books and cds.

Copies are available for purchase at Cafe Press for $15 plus shipping. The
website is: http://www.cafepress.com/letterofdance. Moving to cafe press (which
does print-on-demand) has helped keep production costs low while providing the
dance community with a beautifully produced product that will never go out of
print because I don't have the time or capital to have dozens of reprints made.
I hope in future to add additional merchandise with a dance theme if there is
interest, thoughts, comments, etc. are most welcome. All minimal proceeds go
directly back into the Letter of Dance coffers to offset the cost of publication
of the newsletter.

In addition to the new book, I still have copies of Book II ($9) and Book IV
($15) available directly from me. And, of course, subscriptions to the Letter
are always available--$12 to US addresses will get you 8 issues (about 2
years). Please contact me at letterofdance@... for more information.

TWO SPECIAL OFFERS: Pre-order your copy of Book V now for delivery at Pennsic
and save on shipping costs! Or, order copies of Book II or Book IV now for
delivery at Pennsic and save $1 each. Contact me at letterofdance@....

In Service,
Katherine Mercer

Greetings friends,

This isi a shameless plug for Silver Pass IX, I know you are all planning
to attend but I forgot to mention in the Outlandish Herald that you need to
bring your own drinking water. I repeat, please bring your own drinking
water.

Did I mention to also plan on having a great time? The area has gotten
enough rain to have lots of grass and it is still green, the river even has
flowing water this year. We still have fire restrictions in the camp sites
but we can have a wonderful bonfire for the Wendover Bardic competition and
our shire bardic competiton the following evening. Please, camp stoves are
ok but no campfires or charcoal.

Children, there will be a special bardic workshop just for you with your own
time to perform. Bring your adults, this is sure to be a great time.

Fighters, send your device in so it can be added to the score board,
medieval style.

Please pass this information to those who might not be on any of the lists;
See you all Labor day weekend.

Lord Sean, blame-o-crat for Silver Pass IX

Hi there:

I just wanted to remind folks that we will hold Caerthen Dance Practice
tomorrow (Tuesday, Nov 2) at the Englewood Public Library starting at 7 pm.

Yes, tomorrow is election day. Since the polls officially close at 7, I
encourage voters and non-voters alike to come on over and relax with some non-
partisan dancing after you cast your ballots. Don't worry if you are delayed at
the polls and are a little late - we will understand.

Dear Guillaume and Outlands Dancers,

Thank you for asking Guillaume, because I realized that there was other important information I had not yet gotten out to the public and especially dancers.

At Coronation, Saturday 11/13, at the College of Blaiddwyn, Univ. of NM in al-Barran
(Albuquerque), after morning court, there will be some informal court dancing
and teaching for a couple of hours in preparation for the 10 court dances by the
populace as part of the evening's entertainment after the feast and evening court.

At the A&S Collegium, Sat. 11/20, the two hours (potentially three hours) of court dance
instruction will cover the same 10 dances that will be danced by the populace at
    Coronation, plus some others.

Our wonderful musicians group, Scorpion Scales will play the first set of the court
dancing at Coronation, Sat. 11/13 (after the evening court and the evening feast)
and at the A&S Ball, Sat. 11/20 evening beginning at 7pm.  The five dances they
    will play for are:

Scorpion Scales (Coronation during populace dancing/Entertainment, 11/13, and A&S
       Ball, 11/20):
       Gathering Peascods
Horses Bransle (with second repeat on the chorus)
Official Bransle (one lift each time & repeat all--not 2 preps & lifts in a row)
al-Barran Pavan (music is to Carolingian Pavan, but it is a local SCA dance)
(SL & SR forward, Rev to partner.   DL forward, and Rev. away.  In a 360
degree circle by yourself away from partner, S, S, Double, take Rt. hands
and then exchange places with partner with S, S, Double & men adjust &
both face down the hall).  Dance is then repeated in the opposite direction,
except 2nd time, they take Left hands, and females adjust to end facing up the
hall.  Third & last time, take right hands, men adjust to end up facing
           down the hall.  All reverance.
       Trenchmore

2nd Set to cd music (Coronation during populace dancing/Entertainment, 11/13, and A&S
        Ball, 11/20):
        Hole in the Wall
        Circle Waltz
        Angus Reel
        Petit Riens
and one more dance to be determined from Maltese Bransle (SCA version),
Ballo del Fiore, Pin Wheel, Amoroso or Quen Quer Que

Addition dance sets (A&S Ball, Sat. 11/20, al-Barran) will include the above
dances and maybe a few others.

The dances chosen were based on our musicians' repetoire, and the dances most known
by the dancers in al-Barran and nearby.

Dancers, please email me  your preferences for the dances for the 2nd set (at coronation)
and subsequent sets (for the A&S ball, 11/20).

Arwen and Guillaume, are you still coming to Coronation, 11/13?

Yours in service,
Lady Barbara

Greetings.  Below is the set list of dances for this up coming War.  It may
change by a dance or two, but for the most part, this will be the list.  We
hope to have the sheet music available on line both here and on the War
webpage within the next few weeks.

This selection of dances was set up with the help of Lady Katheline and
Master Rhodri.  They have volunteered to call/teach most of these at the
War, but there are a number of pieces that will need someone to teach them.
Any volunteers?

So please take a look and see what you think?  If you have any suggestions
or questions please let us know.  Looking forward to seeing a bunch of us
able to play together this year.  There will be a musicians practice session
Thursday afternoon/evening at the War (dancers are more than welcome to
attend), and then the Ball will be Friday night after any Courts are done.

Official Bransle
Sellenger's Round
Amoroso

Unto the populace of the Outlands, Lady Lyneya del Filde sends greetings!

In my capacity as entertainment coordinator for the upcoming coronation at the College of Blaiddwyn on November 13th, I would like to make the following announcements.

I know everyone will come dressed in their best, and what better way to highlight your best court garb than to participate in the Fashion through the Ages show after Feast on the 13th.  You will have a maximum of 25 words to describe what ever aspects of the accoutrement you wish to emphasize, not to include name, title and group (these do not count toward limit).  Forms will be available at gate to fill out or from myself and will be accepted up to 15 minutes before the start of the show.  One of al-Barran’s skilled heralds will MC.

During the afternoon of the 13th, informal dancing and gaming will be ongoing in Ballrooms A and B for the entertainment of the general populace.  Anybody willing to bring games to share for the duration is welcome to.

After feast the evening will culminate in a Celebration encompassing the Fashion through the Ages show, court dancing and performances (of all types) – again in Ballrooms A and B.  I would encourage everyone to stay and enjoy the festivities.  Openings for performances are still available, should any of you good and talented gentles wish to participate in this fashion.  Please contact me if you desire to do so.

Finally,  I encourage everyone to go to our newly updated website for coronation for information on other activities, parking guide and maps, feast menu, gate rates and any other information you might desire.

Dear Friends,

Feel like making a contribution to the greater dance
community?

If so, please considerer submitting an article,
letter, or review to the Letter of Dance.

I'm particularly interested in the following material:

* Teaching tips, articles on teaching dance, letters
to the editor, or modified class handouts that
document how *you* teach for the second of two
"teaching dance" theme issues to be published in
January.

* Amusing jokes, top ten lists, joke articles, or
other spoofs for our annual April Fools issue.

* New reconstructions or new interpretations of
familiar dances.

* Groups of articles that might become their own
"theme issue" (Grab your friends and brainstorm--I'm
open to pretty much anything here).

* Reviews of the new dance cds and dance related books
that have been published in the past year (especially
Santucci, Payne's _Alman in Britain_, Brooks' _The Art
of Dancing in 17th century Spain_, and Nevile's _The
Eloquent Body_.)

* Event reports or critiques describing new and
interesting dance events

* How-to articles describing how to do a specific
dance-related activity (how to cultivate new teachers,
how to run a ball, how to start a local practice, how
to dance Arbeau's courante, how to reconstruct dances,
how to dance like a nobleman, etc.)

* Historical articles on a particular subject (Morris
dancing in period, Masques).

* Anything else you can dream up!

I'm particularly interested in receiving material from
first time contributors.

Hope to see you there (if you're in the area, anyway).

There will be four hours of court dance classes at Blaiddwyn’s Winter Wolf Event on Saturday, 2/5 at UNM.  Thanks to Renee, we have had a great indoor site during the winter for court dance practices, which is also very close to fighter practice park.  We are meeting at the Monte Vista Christian Church at 3501 Campus Blvd NE., 12:30-2:30pm on Sunday, February 27.  To get to the church, go south on Carlisle south of Lomas to Grand (Grand is 2 blocks north of Central).  Turn right (west) onto Grand and go 2 blocks to the church.  We will then return to al-Barran fighter practice park, Battan Park on the NW corner of Carlisle &
Lomas, for court dance practices on Sundays, March 13 & 20 from 12:30-2:30pm.

At Estrella War on Friday night starting at approximately  7pm, there will be The Estrella War Grand  Ball with court dancing to live music in the Grand Court Pavilion.  We will be teaching the dances for this Ball during the 4 hours of court dance classes at Blaiddwyn’s Winter Wolf on Saturday, February 5.  The sheet music for the ball dances and links to
dance instructions for each of the dance are also available at the following website:  http://home.comcast.net/~stephanie.maynard/    This website is an excellent opportunity to add to your dance music and dance instruction library. There will also be court dancing & musicians practice for Friday night’s EW Grand Ball on Thursday evening starting at 7pm in the A&S Pavilion.   Also on the EW schedule is a Celtic & Country Dance Ball at 6pm on Sunday evening in the A&S Pavilion.  There may also be informal court dancing on Saturday evening after Grand Court in the Grand Court Pavilion.

Several court dance classes are scheduled at Estrella War:  2-3pm an English Country dance class on Friday (GCP), 2:30-4pm an Italian court dance class on Saturday (A&SP) and a Scottish & English Country court dance class 10am-2pm on Sunday (GCP). These classes will take place in either the Grand Court Pavillion (GCP) or the A&S Pavillion (A&SP). There is also a full track of middle Eastern dance & drumming classes on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday and lots of singing  classes and singing practice with the Known World Choir, which will give a concert on Sunday 3-5pm.  Please see the A&S class schedule at   http://www.estrellawar.org/classschedule.html   or the A&S class descriptions site at   http://www.estrellawar.org/classdesc.html   or the Estrella War special events site at  http://www.estrellawar.org/special events.html  for further details.

If you want to know more about dance practices, you can join  the al-Barran Musicians and Court Dancers discussion list,  or  contact Lady Barbara at krege@... or home 293-7453.  The discussion list will give you the latest information concerning court dancing practices and Scorpion Scales music practices in al-Barran.  Just go to www.groups.yahoo.com  and search for alBarranMusic_Dance to join this free discussion list.

Yours in service to the dream,
Lady Barbara, a court dance instructor
