FYI, Caerthen Dance Practice will NOT be held at the University Hills
library on Thursday, June 3.  As it would ordinarily be discussion night, we
have decided to go join the Caer Galen practice (1st and 3rd Thursdays at
Scott Carpenter Park) this week instead.

Please pass the word along to anyone who may not have heard.  I will also be
making this announcement at Caerthen Populace/Business Meeting tonight.

I also find that there's a proportional relationship between alcohol
consumed and dancing at weddings.

But the cool thing is that not only does your impression of your own
ability grow rosier, quite often people who are stiff *do* get better
at dancing because they relax; and your tolerance of others' weird moves
increases.

I agree that it's important to dance with more people than just those you
know, especially if you're part of a couple.  An interesting "moral"
judgment can intrude in that I find that sometimes very shy or very
new couples not only don't want to dance with anyone else, but sometimes
mistakenly judge others harshly. I find that a careful explanation can
deal with the latter, and a good on-going example the former--"see,
everyone really *does* dance with someone different every dance, but
they save their favorite for their spouse..."

It's a pity that modern society has gotten at once saturated with sex
and at the same time judgmental of activities that formerly had no
potential hidden meaning attached to them...

Precisely.  And don't allow the dichotomy to continue to exist making
"period" dances the opposite of "fun" dances.

I don't like the fast, sloppy dances any more where people are just

Just thought I'd let everyone know that our Dance Practice schedule for the
Barony of Caerthe is going to be a little unusual for the month of July.

As our usual site, the Ross-University Hills Branch Library, will be doing
special library programs on Thursdays during the entire month of July, as
are most of the other branch libraries that have evening hours on Thursdays,
we've had to be ... creative and flexible.  So ...

July 1 -- Join Caer Galen Dance Practice in Scott Carpenter Park in Boulder.
We will be convening at Guillaume's place of employment to carpool up
together.  Please e-mail me for details and directions.

July 8 -- Dance Practice *CANCELLED*

July 15 -- Join Caer Galen Dance Practice.  We will again be carpooling.

July 22 -- Dance Practice at the home of THL Wyndylyn, who has most
graciously offered us the use of her living room -- or her garage or
backyard if we have enough dancers that we won't fit in the living room.

July 29 -- Dance Practice at the home of THL Wyndylyn.

As of the first week in August, we will be back at the Library.  I will post
the schedule then.

Please pass the word along to people who aren't on this list.  In
particular, if anyone knows how to contact Doran from Dragonsspine, please
make sure he knows of our change in schedule, as he has occasionally been
coming up for practice.  I had his e-mail address, but it seems to have been

Is anyone familiar with the ballo called Verceppe? I have the melody
line for the music and the dance instructions. What I need is a 2,
3, or 4 - part arrangement of the music so that we can have live
music with the dance. The music is credited to Domenico da Piacenza.
We can't find an arrangement anywhere.

Does anyone know anything about the music for this dance? Or, can
anyone fill me in on typical Italian dance music chord progressions?
The music appears to start in G major - would they have used the
dominant (D or D minor) to harmonize with it, or would they be more
likely to have used the lowered VII chord (F)? Then the music
appears to switch to D minor.

  The music changes time signatures ever 4 to 6 measures. I noticed
that there is always
	 a big circle above the 3/4 time signature
	 a big C with a dot in the center above 6/8 signature
	 a big C with no dot above 2/4.
Is this an old way of notating meter? Perhaps a shorthand symbol for
the meter?

Any help you could give me would be very much appreciated. If you
don't know the answers, perhaps you could direct me to some one else
who might be able to help? Thanks!!

Barony of Carolingia (Boston, MA) over twenty years ago.  It may be possible
to track down the arrangement that they used.  The Letter of Dance people
are your best bet there.

I am a member of Colorado Friends of Old Time Music and Dance, active in
the English country dancing group. We are trying to get the message out
about our dance sessions, held in Lakewood (Denver) usually on the last
Friday evening of every month (except for August).

As you may already know, English country dancing predates contra, most
ceili, and square dancing. Many of the earliest English country dances
were being performed as far back as the Middle Ages - "Rufty Tufty,"
"Sellenger's Round," "Black Nag," "Merry Merry Milkmaids," "Jenny Pluck
Pears," etc. The dances were done in village as well as great hall.

We have a superb indoor space for dancing, a wonderful band, a great
caller/instructor, and at least a couple dozen friendly dancers of
novice to experienced levels. We charge about $7 for non-CFOOTMAD
members, $6 for members. Special clothes, a partner or even previous
experience are not necessary. Dances start at 7:30 and run to 11 p.m.

We welcome members of SCA and Renaissance fair groups who would like to
learn period dancing. English country is also a good alternative for
those who love the fast-paced contra, Irish or Scottish dancing but find
it physically taxing.

Your assistance in getting out this information would be greatly

Ok then.  My names Megan, and I apologize if I come across as strange.
I was in a car wreck on Monday(no one was seriously injured, although
it was an act of God that i survived the only part of the driver's side
that wasn't damaged was the driver's side door)

I'm 18, and will be an english major with writing specialiization.  I
love the medieval period, and am trying to learn as much as i can about
its society and culture, and would love to write about the period
someday.

     My name is Katryn, originally from Trimaris, my family took about 2years
off to relocate and settle in Dragonspine,  I have never been involved with
dance (other than ballet as a child) but I am eager to learn.  I understand

I believe that Dragonsspine Dance Practice will be starting the week
after next.  I will try to get a posting after the monthly business
meeting on Wednesday.

Just wanted to let you know that I've added a couple of new features which
you are all welcome to use.

The first is a calendar.  I have added Caerthen Dance Practices to the
calendar, with an automatic reminder that will be sent to all members a day
before each practice (if this gets too obnoxious, let me know and I can turn
it off!).

The second is a file.  There is now a folder named "Dance Practice
Directions", and under that, a file called "Caerthe.txt" that contains
directions to our dance practice sites.

Please add information for any other practices in the Outlands -- it would
be nice to be able to support each others' practices wherever possible.

Also -- I'd be interested to hear what kinds of dances are being done at the
various practices.  In Caerthe, we have recently begun teaching some of the
easy Italian dances, such as Petit Riens and Anello, and have also added
several of the Old Measures to our repertoire.  We also regularly do a
selection of English Country Dances (first edition Playford), bransles from
Arbeau, and miscellaneous pavans.  Our plans for the future are to
reconstruct Rostiboli from period sources, and to learn a basse dance
(Casulle).

Our plan is to have dancing at Caerthen Twelfth Night this year.  I will try
to post a list of the dances that will be done so folks can practice.

Hi, folks!

Just thought I'd let you know that we worked on the schedule for Caerthen
Twelfth Night last night, and it looks like there'll be two one-hour periods
set aside for dance.  Plus, there is the possibility of some open time in
the evening, if court should happen to end early (yeah, well, we can hope,
can't we?).  [For those of you who haven't heard, Investiture of the next
Baron and Baroness of Caerthe will take place at Twelfth Night, so the
schedule is pretty crowded, but we still think we can wedge in a little
dancing.]

Anyway, Lord Guillaume de Gonzac will be coordinating the dancing, and would
like to limit dances to 1st ed. Playford or earlier.  He will be contacting
various dance instructors in this part of the kingdom to help teach/lead
dancing, but if anyone knows of anyone who might be interested in helping
out, please post it here and I will forward the information to him (due to
an e-mail glitch, he's not currently on this list but will be back very
soon).

Also, if anyone knows of anyone who ought to be on this list and isn't,
please forward their e-mail address to me (with their permission, of
course!), and I will send them an invitation to join.  Or people can join
without being invited, actually, just by following this link to the OneList
