Welcome m'lady,

Glad to hear you like to dance, and welcome to the SCA. I would suggest you
attend some of the larger holiday events if possible, I know there will be
court dancing at al-Barran's Midwinter celebration next weekend. Also, if
you get to Estrella this year, they usually have lots of dancing in the A&S
teaching area. Some of us will be at both events, hope to see you there.
Even our local Yule revel held tonight was to have dancing but the flu has
kept me home for the past 3 days, including the party tonight, hence I am
reading your message. So, there are lots of dancers out there, can anyone
for the eastern part of the kingdom add more?

I am forwarding from the Atendance list, the court dance classes schedule for Estrella Wars in Phoenix, Az.  Classes will only be on Saturday 2/14/04 and several of those will be discussion classes.

Yours in service to the dream,

Lady Barbara, al-Barran, Outlands

 Greetings!!

For the intensely curious, here's the dance class schedule for
Estrella. All the classes will be on Saturday, just cuz it's easier,
and gives us a lovely opportunity to annoy the A&S competition
judges. ;)

10am - Dance & Society in the Renaissance. Dance was a very
important part of Renaissance society. It defined a courtier and
could lead to political advancement. It could also cause a person to
be scorned and ridiculed. Come join us for a look at dance as
theatre, society and politics in the 15th and 16th centuries. Taught
by Meistres Julian ferch Rhys.

11am - Beginning English Country Dance. Heart's Ease, Rufty Tufty,
and other two-couple dances. Taught by Sasha Keyel.

12 noon - Myths & Misconceptions in SCA Dance. Many people believe
that the way we dance in the SCA is "The One True Way", completely
correct for our period. In this class, we'll look at the difference
and similarities between dance then and now. Be ready for some
surprises! Taught by Meistres Julian ferch Rhys.

1pm - Intermediate English Country Dance: Argeers. An in-depth look
at "Argeers"; or, "Playford on Acid". A previous knowledge of the
steps in English Country Dance will be useful, but is not required.
Taught by Sasha Keyel.

2pm - Anyone Can Boogie: The Basic Dances. This class will cover
many of the basic Western European Court dances that you regularly
see at Balls and events.  You don't have to have any dance
experience to learn these dances and after this class you'll be able
to boogie with the best of them. Taught by Lady Katheline van Weye.
(2 hours)

4pm - Dancers' Moot. A get-together for anyone interested in dance.
We'll be answering questions, trying new reconstructions, and just
generally exchanging dance information of all kinds!

I've just spoken to someone who found out they were coming and wants
to teach. I'm checking into whether we can get their classes into
the schedule at this point, so there might be some additions to the
schedule at a later date.

Thanks to the teachers, and, by the way, these are the class
descriptions which will be appearing in the gatebook. :)

I am forwarding for those of you who love court dancing, an excellent list of classes in Sierra Vista, Az. for the Atenveldt Kingdom A&S event.

 Hi all...

As promised, here's the provisional schedule (bearing in mind that I
don't actually know what timeframe they're going to let me work in).
I'm running with the assumption that we're going to start classes
around 9am, with a lunch break at noon. If this changes, I'll make
corrections accordingly (and let y'all know). As a reminder, the
event is the first weekend in April (3-4) in Sierra Vista (Barony-
March of Mons Tonitrus).

SATURDAY
9am - Introduction to Western European Dance. A general overview of
what we know about Western European dance. Designed to give the
student an idea of dance styles and forms which may further interest
them.

10am - Beginning 15th Century Italian Dance. An introductory class
to the styles and footwork of 15th century Italian dance. Will
include Amoroso, Petit Vriens and Rostiboli Gioioso. (taught by
Katheline)

11am - Intermediate 15th Century Italian Dance. A continuation of
study from the beginning class. We will look a little more in-depth
at other types of 15th century Italian dance.

1pm - 16th Century French Dance - Arbeau. A look at the dances found
in Arbeau - bransles, pavanes and so on. (taught by Katheline)

2pm - Beginning 16th Century Italian Dance. An introductory class on
the slightly more complex dances of 16th century Italy. The student
will be introduced to some new dance forms and some new steps. We
will be looking primarily at the dances of Fabritio Caroso.

3pm - Intermediate 16th Century Italian Dance. A continuation of the
beginning class, this session will take a look at Cesare Negri,
Caroso's partner-in-crime.

4pm - The Old Measures. England had dance in the 16th century too!
This class will introduce the student to the series of dances taught
in and around the Inns of Court and other great London institutions
of learning. (taught by Katheline)

SUNDAY
9am - Burgundian Bassedanse. The 15th century in Burgundy saw the
emergence of a particularly "logical" form of processional dance.
Students in this class will learn the formula of bassedanse, as well
as how to perform them.

10am - English Country Dance. Grandfathered in, the dances of this
class are first noted in 1651. However, they are among the most
popular dances done in the SCA and include such favorites as Hearts
Ease, Rufty Tufty and Upon a Summer's Day. [NOTE: dances mentioned
here are not necessarily those that have to be taught.]

11am - Dance Reconstruction. You've seen the dances, now come try
your hand and putting them together yourself! A dance from a period
source will be chosen, and class participants will learn the process
of reconstruction by working it out for themselves. If the dance
chosen is from a foreign repertoire, the class shall be provided
English translations to work from.

1pm - Galliards. Galliards were one of the most popular dance styles
of the 16th century. Queen Elizabeth scandalized Europe by dancing
them with Robert Dudley. Her father, Henry VIII, was enamoured of
the style, as it allowed him to show off his machismo (and his
rather shapely legs!). In this class, students will be introduced to
the basics of galliards. It's all improvisation - you can't get it
wrong!

2pm - Dance Etiquette, Improvisation and Ornamentation. Dance isn't
just about the choreographies. A large part of Western European
dance was improvisational - even in the midst of carefully-
constructed choreographies! In this class, we will have a gander at
the various forms of ornamentation available to a dancer and learn
how to flesh out a dance performance. We will also look at manner
and mannerisms as related to the successful  performance of period
dance in a period style. (somehow I'm thinking I'm going to get
stuck with this one, regardless :)

3pm - Dance Class Redux. These two hours will be a walk-in session
where any dance-related questions will, hopefully, be answered. It
is intended that anyone who is interested in dance and/or wishes
further help towards an Estrella entry will use this session to pick
the brains of the attending dance instructors. Participants are not
required to attend for the entire two hours. [NOTE: I am not looking
for instructors for this session. However, I would ask that anyone
teaching appear for this if possible, just to give any student who
does show up a wider range of brains to draw from. :) ]

And there ya go. Let the mad rush to teach classes begin! ;) Oh, and
if I've missed something, or y'all have schedule suggestions, I'd
love to hear those as well. :)

Thanks!

Julian

category (for example they may have two groups of dancers dancing
different dances in the original court dance adult division.)
Individuals, not affiliated with a household, may also enter this dance

competition, as well as to the winning household. A sound system that
plays CDs and audio tapes will be provided on May 2nd.

The al-Barran Court Dancers, who are sponsoring this Household Dance

the park on Sundays during fighter practice or elsewhere. We will
also make copies of the court dance music (just bring an audio tape to
the park) and even help you in selecting court dances for your
household dance performing groups of two, three, four, six, eight,
members or more. Maypole dance practices will be at fighter practice
park on Sundays 3/7, 3/28, 4/18 and 4/25 with maypole practice for
everyone, 12:30-2:30pm. Households may reserve time before or after
these times on these dates for working out their own maypole dances.

Court Dancing (March. 2004 Shaft article) (by Lady
Barbara, 293-7453)

Court dancing is certainly alive and well in al-Barran! Court dance
practices are scheduled at fighter practice park (Battan Park, on Lomas,
NW corner of Carlisle & Lomas) for Sundays, 2/29, 3/7, 3/28, 4/18 & 4/25
from 12:30 to 2:30 pm. Everyone, age 7 and up, is welcome at these
free court dance lessons. (Note: the practice for 3/21 has been
canceled and replaced with one on 3/7.) March 27, there will be the
“Heralds and Scribes Court Dance Ball”, from 7pm to 11pm at the student
union building (SUB) in Ballroom C at UNM, sponsored by the College of
Blaiddwyn. This will be a free event. (Please see the article
elsewhere in this Shaft.) On April 3rd, at Sworded Affaire, there will
be several hours of court dance lessons during the day and a court dance
ball that evening after the feast. Our wonderful al-Barran musicians,
Scorpion Scales, will fill the hall with their wonderful music for both
of these balls! Those wishing to have Scorpion Scales play at their
event or demos, should contact Lady Lin Shiao Mei at
shiao_mei@... or 934-3952. There will also be court dancing,
Sunday, May 2nd, at the May Day Celebration. For the latest concerning
times and locations of dance or music practices, please go to
www.yahoogroups.com and join the al-Barran music & dance list,
alBarranMusic_Dance@yahoogroups.com.

In March and April at dance practice in Battan Park, we will be doing
lots of maypole dancing and creating a few maypole dances, in
preparation for our “al-Barran May Day Celebration” at fighter practice
park on Sunday, May 2nd (please see the event article elsewhere in the
shaft). At this May Day event, in addition to regular fighter practice,
there will be a rapier tourney, a heavy weapons tourney, a “May Day
Household Dance Competition”, maypole dancing, court dancing, middle
eastern dancing, drumming, period games for children and adults,
singing, puppetry, story telling, merchants, a SCA items swap meet,
classes for newcomers, and lots of entertainment in the Town Square. We
hope you will come in garb to celebrate the coming of May and make merry
with us. This event will be like a mini-Ren faire and all ideas are
welcome. This is an excellent event to invite newcomers to, as we will
have several things special for newcomers, including newcomer classes.
We also need volunteers to put on the rapier tourney and also to put on
the heavy weapons tourney. If you would like to entertain on May 2nd or
at the Heralds and Scribes Court Dance Ball on March 27, or are willing
to host either of these tourneys, please contact Lady Barbara at
293-7453 or krege@....

I wish to thank Gabriel de Morland and Lord Gauvain Eisenbein of
Blaiddwyn for the opportunity to have a court dance ball and to teach
court dance classes at Winter Wolf in January. Thanks too to Lord
Canus Dragonblood and Lady Isabella al Harith for teaching and leading
some of the dances during the Winter Wolf Court Dance Ball. A very
special thank you to Lady Melody Shaw, who has been duplicating the sets
of 3 al-Barran court dance cds (originally created for us by the
generosity of Lord Sean of Rio de las Animas), that I have been giving
to the shires, cantons, colleges, and baronies in the Outlands, along
with the 8 page court dance instruction booklet of 34 dances that I
created, to help spread court dancing in the Outlands. So far these
gift sets have been given to 9 of the 28 active SCA groups in the
Outlands. Lady Lin Shiao Mei has diligently researched and located
almost all of the sheet music for those same 34 dances and has them
available for downloading to help other SCA musicians, at her website,
http://shiao_mei.home.comcast.net/sscales.html.

I was invited by Baroness Constance of the Citadel of the Southern Pass
to teach court dancing at their 12th Night & Investiture, January 17 in
El Paso and it was just delightful teaching court dancing to the Barons
and Baronesses of Caerthe and Dragonsspine. Their dedication to
learning and their enjoyment of those dances, during those several
hours, is a memory I will long treasure. A very special thank you to
Baron Sabastian, who made this trip possible, donated the fabric for 32
more maypole streamers, and custom made and donated our new, padded,
carrying bag for our park, dance practice boombox. A very special thank
you also to Thalauriana, who sewed the 32 maypole streamers.

Yours in service to the dream,
Lady Barbara

When I originally sent this out almost two months ago, my computer had a glitch.  It was sent out dated Jan. 04, 1904, unoticed by me,  so it probably ended up at the end of your saved emails.  Anyway, for those of you who love court dancing, this is a reminder that there is an excellent track of court dances being taught at the Atenveldt Kingdom A&S event, in Sierra Vista, Az, April 3 & 4, 2004.  So I am forwarding for your information an email concerning the schedule.

Thanks!

Julian

al-Barran May Day Celebration
Barony of al-Barran
Battan Park, NW corner of Lomas & Carlisle, Albuquerque, NM
Sunday, May 2, A.S. XXXVIII (2004)
Site opens at 9 AM and closes at 5 PM
No site fee and the site is dry

It’s May! It’s May! The lovely month of May! Come join us in a May
Day Celebration of the performing arts at a mini-renaissance faire,
hosted by the al-Barran Court Dancers. There will be dancing around two
Maypoles, court dancing, middle eastern dancing, drumming, a “May Day
Household Dance Competition”, singing, story telling, and puppetry.
There will also be period games for adults and children, a heavy weapons
tourney, a rapier tourney, merchants, a SCA items swap meet (clean out
your collection of “SCA items” and bring them to swap, sell, or give
away to newcomers and others) and classes for newcomers, along with
regular fighter practice. We encourage you to wear your garb to this
event and bring your period games, musical instruments, pillows,
blankets, and chairs to sit on, as there will be lots of entertainment
in the “Town Square” ! We are looking for individuals or households to
sponsor and put on a heavy weapons tournament and a rapier tournament.
If you are interested in hosting a tournament, entertaining, or teaching
a class, please contact Lady Barbara. We will have special events and
classes for newcomers, so this is a wonderful event to invite newcomers
and your friends to. Come and make merry and contribute your talents
and gifts to make this a Magical Day!!

For the May Day Household Dance Competition, there will be six dance
categories for adults and youth: court dance, maypole dance, and middle
eastern dance. To enter this Household competition, a household does
not have to have dancers in each of the six categories and they may have
more than one entry in a given category (for example they may have two
groups of dancers dancing different dances in the original court dance
adult division.) Individuals, not affiliated with a household, may also
enter this dance competition. Prizes will be awarded to the winners of
each dance competition, as well as to the winning household. A sound
system that plays CDs and audio tapes will be provided on May 2nd.

The al-Barran Court Dancers, who are sponsoring this Household Dance
Competition, will give private court dance lessons to your household at
the park on Sundays during fighter practice or elsewhere. We will
also make copies of the court dance music (just bring an audio tape to
the park) and even help you in selecting court dances for your
household dance performing groups of two, three, four, six, eight,
members or more. Maypole dance practices will be at fighter practice
park on Sundays 3/7, 3/28, 4/18 and 4/25 with maypole practice for
everyone, 12:30-2:30pm. Households may reserve time before or after
these times on these dates for working out their own maypole dances.
Please contact Lady Barbara, for private dance lessons, and for
reserving private time to practice and work out dances with the
maypoles. We also strongly recommend that your maypole dance
correographers attend some of the maypole dance practices, to figure out
how the maypole streamers react to different moves by the dancers.

Directions: Take I-40 in Albuquerque to the Carlisle exit. Exit onto
Carlisle and go south on Carlisle to Lomas. Turn right (west) at the
light onto Lomas and go just past the Walgreens to Battan Park. For
further information, contact the autocrat, Lady Barbara (Barbara Krege),

War 2005, in A&S category of European Dance (Court Dance) for A&S War
Point.
Meeting begins at 4:30pm (or sooner) for one hour, at the baronial

Greetings,

We have decided to have the meeting--for those interested in performing
(or supporting the dancers efforts) at Estrella 2005, for the european
dance (court dance) competition for the Estrella War A&S war point,--at
4:30pm (or sooner, if baronial court is over sooner), for about one

At Atenveldt's Kingdom A&S this weekend in Sierra Vista, Arizona, there
are some wonderful court dance classes, all day Saturday and all day
Sunday, 4/3 & 4/4, as well as a lot of other A&S classes.

I have two, possibly three individuals who would like to go to this
event, leaving Friday afternoon, from Albuquerque, who are seeking
transportation. One of them has a parent who lives in Sierra Vista,
so crash space would be available for everyone and they would be
willing to help with gasoline expenses.

This event is being held in the Barony of Mons Tonitrus.

For complete information about this event, please visit this event
website:
    http://www.geocities.com/monstonitrus/calendar/ans2004.html

If you are interested in driving and providing rides, please contact
me at krege@... or 505-293-7453 as soon as possible.

Below is the court dance class schedule for this event.

Yours in service to the dream,
Lady Barbara, al-Barran

Here is the schedule of the court dance classes for Saturday and Sunday:

Saturday Room 305A

Time Class

10-11 Introduction to Western European Dance
Meistres Julian ferch Rhys
A general overview of what we know about Western European dance.
Designed to give the student an idea of dance styles and forms which
may further interest them.

11-12 Beginning 15th Century Italian Dance
Lady Katheline van Weye
An introductory class to the styles and footwork of 15th century
Italian dance. Will include Amoroso, Petit Vriens and Rostiboli
Gioioso.

1-2 16th Century French Dance - Arbeau
Lady Katheline van Weye
Arbeau. A look at the dances found in Arbeau - bransles, pavanes and
so on.

2-3 English Country Dance
Grandfathered in, the dances of this class are first noted in 1651.
However, they are among the most popular dances done in the SCA and
include such favorites as Hearts Ease, Rufty Tufty and Upon a
Summer's Day.

3-4 Coordinating Dance with Live Musicians
Mistress Isabeau della Farfalla and Master Wallace le Casse
"Dance is only enhanced by the presence of live musicians. Come speak
to some members of the Atenveldt College of Musicians and learn about
coordinating choreographs with music, dancers with players."

4-5 The Old Measures
Lady Katheline van Weye
England had dance in the 16th century too! This class will introduce
the student to the series of dances taught in and around the Inns of
Court and other great London institutions of learning.

SUNDAY Room 305A

Time Class

10-11 Beginning 16th Century Italian Dance
An introductory class on the slightly more complex dances of 16th
century Italy. The student will be introduced to some new dance forms
and some new steps. We will be looking primarily at the dances of
Fabritio Caroso.

11-12 Dance Reconstruction
You've seen the dances, now come try your hand and putting them
together yourself! A dance from a period source will be chosen, and
class participants will learn the process of reconstruction by
working it out for themselves. If the dance chosen is from a foreign
repertoire, the class shall be provided English translations to work
from.

12-1 Intermediate 15th Century Italian Dance

1-2 Galliards
Galliards were one of the most popular dance styles of the 16th
century. Queen Elizabeth scandalized Europe by dancing them with
Robert Dudley. Her father, Henry VIII, was enamoured of the style, as
it allowed him to show off his machismo (and his rather shapely
legs!). In this class, students will be introduced to the basics of
galliards. It's all improvisation - you can't get it wrong!

2-3 Dance Etiquette, Improvisation and Ornamentation
Meistres Julian ferch Rhys
Dance isn't just about the choreography A large part of Western
European dance was improvisational - even in the midst of carefully-
constructed choreographies ! In this class, we will have a gander at
the various forms of ornamentation available to a dancer and learn
how to flesh out a dance performance. We will also look at manner and
mannerisms as related to the successful performance of period dance
in a period style.

3-4 Intermediate 16th Century Italian Dance
This session will take a look at Cesare Negri, Caroso's partner-in-
crime.

4-5 Dance Class Redux
This will be a walk-in session where any dance-related questions
will, hopefully, be answered. It is intended that anyone who is
interested in dance and/or wishes further help towards an Estrella
entry will use this session to pick the brains of the attending dance
instructors.

Photos from H & S this weekend.

If you have a minute, check out these photos from my Webshots photo
album! Excuse the cross posting to those who belong to all the same
elists as I do.

I have tried posting the particular album links from webshots, but it
won't let me do that. I am not sure if it is an anti-spam filter from
yahoo or webshots, but when you try to put in an address like al-
barran @ yahoogroups.com in the webshots mailer, it balks. I would
have to individually mail each of you, and I doubt most of you want
to see these photos.

Instead, go to http://community.webshots.com/user/squidgete8 and link
on " heralds and scribes 2004 " or " SCA H & S 2004 food " You can
ignore the personal photos, photos from my school, and locked albums.

The photos in the two listed albums were all taken this weekend at
Heralds and Scribes. I wanted to get the wide variety of garb shown
during the day and lots of the dancing at the ball. I also tried to
get all the lovely silent auction items. Most of these didn't have
the right lighting.

The only thing that isn't at least somewhat blurry is the shots of
the wonderful food spread. Unfortunately, I took so many photos that
at least one person decided NOT to photograph the lunch spread.

Which is TOO bad, the food was so lovely it deserves a far better
camera than mine to take pictures. (Especially all the heraldic
cookies.)

My little ixla camera takes terrible pictures (but it was a cheap
digital, so you get what you pay for!) Most of the photos, and all
the ones at the dance came out so muddy and dark you can only tell
who people are if you can identify the clothing.

And no, this does not include the one embarrassing picture that was
taken in the park on Sunday. I have that one as wallpaper. he he he

Subject: another great Singer sewing machine for sale

Greetings friends,

I'm sorry if you get this more than once but want to get the info to as many
as possible. My good friend and neighbor is getting out of the job sewing
business and is downsizing her shop. She is offering her walking foot
Singer for sale. I have used this machine and it works great. It is old
but in good workable condition, ready to go to work. I am putting this on
the list as a favor to her as she has let me use her shop many times for SCA
stuff, hence I am familiar with the machine.

The machine is a Singer model# 111W155, The serial number is W1294770 so
you can research the date of manufacture from Singer. She is asking $400
cash. Terms will be arranged but she needs the cash soon, pickup of the
machine is in Durango, CO. There is no manual but they are offered through
Singer and I have seen several offered on e-bay.

This machine is a walking foot type, meaning that the presser foot also
advances with the feed dogs below. The mechanics are a bit more complex but
I have first hand experience with this machine. It behaves well with canvas
such as used in tents, I did make a tent on this machine a couple of years
ago. It has a control for stitch length and sews a good straight stitch.
The owner has sewn leather belting such as on feedbags for horses and it
works well. It will handle heavy thread, she regularly uses size 135 nylon,
which is very stout.

The table is included, it has a work light, thread stand for two cones, a
bobbin winder, a few needles and extra bobbin. The motor runs on 110v,
regular house current. The motor runs very smooth and quiet. The machine
is equipped with a safety clutch in case you get into something very hard,
you will not destroy the machine workings, a great feature.

I personally have lusted for this machine the past couple of years but I got
the opportunity to buy a very new/used machine at a much higher price. I
would recommend this machine to anyone needing something to sew heavy
fabrics and sew them well. It ought to run for a very long time in the
future, hence I recommend it to you now.

I have pictures posted on my webshots site, go to the Singer 111W155 album
at this address: http://community.webshots.com/user/mtnsounds

Happy creative sewing,
Sean, mka Morris

Julee', there is a lot of dance on the east coast.  I would suggest you  email   SCA-dance@...    and ask to be put on their mailing list.  Then once you are on the list, you can email the list and ask for dance groups near where you live.

You can also go to the SCA website (I believe it is  www.SCA.org) and find the kingdoms nearest you and go to their websites and see if there is any mention of dance groups.  If there is not, then contact each ot those SCA groups,  Kingdom A&S Ministers and email them your questions..

All kinds of stuff. Which end of NJ are you on? I do have a few web pages
bookmarked for the East coast, but none for NJ. I know there are regular
workshops in Hartford, CT., and Phili has an active dance community (or used
to). Carolingia (Boston, MA) is the Mecca of period dance, if that isn't too
far. Since the Outlands is in the Rocky Mountains, most of us won't be too up
on what's happening in NJ. Unfortunately, I don't know much about the SCA in
NJ, but I know people who know people.

New Jersey in in the East Kingdom, so you might look through their web page at
http://www.eastkingdom.org (you will probably have to go to the local group
pages to find out about local practices, however).

If you can wait a few months - and cross PA, then you have access to over
1000 hours of A & S classes at Pennsic this August. There will be several days
of dance classes, too, with balls pretty much every night of the second week
(mostly in the dance floor tent).

Keith / Guillaume S:}>

P.S. I turned up an A & S event 4/17 in Riverton, NJ with a quick web search.
Checking their web page (http://www.ironbog.eastkingdom.org/) - they are
holding a ball tonight! Their regular dance practice is on 1st Tuesdays.

PPS. The Barony of Carolingia is holding an "Epic Masked Ball" Sunday afternon
4/18 ("Costumes and masks are highly encouraged but not required," although I
assume that the usual SCA costumes are required). Dance classes are
specifically listed in the Carolingian event announcement, and there is no site
fee. The site is accessible via commmuter rail (don't know if that helps).

It’s May!  It’s May!  The lovely month of May!  Come join us in a May Day Celebration  at a mini-renaissance faire, hosted by the al-Barran Court Dancers.  The day before, May 1st, is also the 39th Anniversary of the Society for Creative Annachronism.  So this event will be not only a celebration of the coming of spring and May Day, but also a celebration of our SCA, Outlands and al-Barran history, a honoring of the individuals who have made our barony so rich, a celebration of the performing arts, a welcoming of newcomers, and a special tribute to our children.  We promise you a visually rich, fun, heart warming, educational, and magical day!

There will be dancing around two Maypoles, court dancing, middle eastern dancing, drumming, a “May Day Household Dance Competition”, singing, story telling, and puppetry.  There will also be period games for adults and children, a heavy weapons tourney, a rapier tourney, merchants, a SCA items swap meet (clean out your collection of “SCA items” and bring them to swap, sell, or give away to newcomers and others) and classes for newcomers and others, along with regular fighter practice.   We will also be serving lunch and lemonade.

We encourage you to wear your garb to this event and bring your period games, musical instruments, feast gear, pillows, blankets, and chairs to sit on, as there will be lots of entertainment in the Town Square!  Please also bring your period pavillions and banners to put around the “town square” and add to your own comfort and the renaissance faire ambiance.  We are looking for individuals or households to sponsor and put on a heavy weapons tournament and a rapier tournament.      If you are interested in helping with setup at 8am or teardown at 5pm, hosting a tournament, merchanting, entertaining, telling stories, putting on a children’s activity or helping with one, putting on a puppet show, telling us about our al-Barran and Outlands history, heralding, or teaching a class, please contact Lady Barbara. All volunteers will be very, very appreciated!  We will have special events and classes for newcomers, so this is a wonderful event to invite newcomers, children and your friends to.   Come and make merry and contribute your talents and gifts to make this a Magical Day!

Tentative schedule for the “town square” (subject to change) is:  8am setup,   9am Maypole and Court Dancing,   10am Household Dance Competition,   11am Heavy Weapons Tounament,   12pm Entertainment and lunch,   1pm--Classes:  Newcomer, al-Barran History, and Other,   2pm Rapier Tournament,   3pm Maypole Dancing, Court Dancing, and Entertainment,   4pm Newcomer and Other Classes,   5pm teardown.  Throughout the day, there will be adult and children’s period games, children’s activities, light and heavy weapons fighter practice, shopping at the  merchants and “SCA Items Swap Meet”, and  middle eastern dancing and drumming.

For the May Day Household Dance Competition, there will be six dance categories for adults and youth:  court dance,  maypole dance, and middle eastern dance.   To enter this Household competition, a household does not have to have dancers in each of the six categories and they may have more than one entry in a given category (for example they may have two groups of dancers dancing different dances in the original court dance adult division.)  Individuals, not affiliated with a household, may also enter this dance competition.  Prizes will be awarded to the winners of each dance competition, as well as to the winning household.  A sound system that plays CDs and audio tapes will be provided on May 2nd.

The al-Barran Court Dancers, who are sponsoring this Household Dance Competition, will give private court dance lessons to your household at the park on Sundays during fighter practice or elsewhere.    We will also make copies of the court dance music (just bring an audio tape to the park) and even help you in selecting court dances for your household  dance performing groups of two, three, four, six, eight, members or more.  Maypole dance practices will be at fighter practice park on Sundays 4/4, 4/18 and 4/25 with  maypole practice for everyone, 12:30-2:30pm.  Households may reserve time before or after these times on these dates for working out their own maypole dances.  Please contact Lady Barbara,  for private dance lessons, and for reserving private time for your Household to practice and work out dances with the maypoles.  We also strongly recommend that your maypole dance correographers attend some of the maypole dance practices, to figure out how the maypole streamers react to different moves by the dancers.

Directions:  Take I-40 in Albuquerque to the Carlisle exit.  Exit onto Carlisle and go south on Carlisle to Lomas.  Turn right (west) at the light onto Lomas and go just past the Walgreens to  Battan Park.  For further information, go to our website at http://www.al-Barran.org/mayday04.html, or contact the autocrat, Lady Barbara (Barbara Krege) at krege@..., 505-293-7453.
