This includes some pictures of court dancers. I would need to get
names and permissions before I could send any copies to you that
could be "used" for any purpose. But if I can dance -- anyone can.

If it was too cold for you to come out to the "Toys for Tots"
tournament in the park here in al-Barran on Sunday, I have pictures.
It was 34 degrees outside, so we all had thermal underwear under the
garb. Look under the two "Toysfortots" albums, which I have posted
tonight. By tomorrow, I should have pictures of the school's Book
Fair, including children modelling hats loaned by Scadians.

Our little group has been practicing diligently since June and even performing
at several events, and here it is December before I even finished (started?)
the website for it.  Without further ado, please take a look at what we've

Glad to hear you like to dance, and welcome to the SCA.  I would suggest you
attend some of the larger holiday events if possible, I know there will be
court dancing at al-Barran's Midwinter celebration next weekend.  Also, if
you get to Estrella this year, they usually have lots of dancing in the A&S
teaching area.  Some of us will be at both events, hope to see you there.
Even our local Yule revel held tonight was to have dancing but the flu has
kept me home for the past 3 days, including the party tonight, hence I am
reading your message.  So, there are lots of dancers out there, can anyone
for the eastern part of the kingdom add more?

many of the basic Western European Court dances that you regularly
see at Balls and events.  You don't have to have any dance
experience to learn these dances and after this class you'll be able
to boogie with the best of them. Taught by Lady Katheline van Weye.
(2 hours)

4pm - Dancers' Moot. A get-together for anyone interested in dance.
We'll be answering questions, trying new reconstructions, and just
generally exchanging dance information of all kinds!

I've just spoken to someone who found out they were coming and wants
to teach. I'm checking into whether we can get their classes into
the schedule at this point, so there might be some additions to the
schedule at a later date.

Thanks to the teachers, and, by the way, these are the class
descriptions which will be appearing in the gatebook. :)

the slightly more complex dances of 16th century Italy. The student

3pm - Intermediate 16th Century Italian Dance. A continuation of the
beginning class, this session will take a look at Cesare Negri,
Caroso's partner-in-crime.

4pm - The Old Measures. England had dance in the 16th century too!
This class will introduce the student to the series of dances taught
in and around the Inns of Court and other great London institutions
of learning. (taught by Katheline)

SUNDAY
9am - Burgundian Bassedanse. The 15th century in Burgundy saw the
emergence of a particularly "logical" form of processional dance.
Students in this class will learn the formula of bassedanse, as well
as how to perform them.

10am - English Country Dance. Grandfathered in, the dances of this
class are first noted in 1651. However, they are among the most
popular dances done in the SCA and include such favorites as Hearts
Ease, Rufty Tufty and Upon a Summer's Day. [NOTE: dances mentioned
here are not necessarily those that have to be taught.]

11am - Dance Reconstruction. You've seen the dances, now come try
your hand and putting them together yourself! A dance from a period
source will be chosen, and class participants will learn the process
of reconstruction by working it out for themselves. If the dance
chosen is from a foreign repertoire, the class shall be provided
English translations to work from.

1pm - Galliards. Galliards were one of the most popular dance styles
of the 16th century. Queen Elizabeth scandalized Europe by dancing
them with Robert Dudley. Her father, Henry VIII, was enamoured of
the style, as it allowed him to show off his machismo (and his
rather shapely legs!). In this class, students will be introduced to
the basics of galliards. It's all improvisation - you can't get it
wrong!

2pm - Dance Etiquette, Improvisation and Ornamentation. Dance isn't
just about the choreographies. A large part of Western European
dance was improvisational - even in the midst of carefully-
constructed choreographies! In this class, we will have a gander at
the various forms of ornamentation available to a dancer and learn
how to flesh out a dance performance. We will also look at manner
and mannerisms as related to the successful  performance of period
dance in a period style. (somehow I'm thinking I'm going to get
stuck with this one, regardless :)

3pm - Dance Class Redux. These two hours will be a walk-in session
where any dance-related questions will, hopefully, be answered. It
is intended that anyone who is interested in dance and/or wishes
further help towards an Estrella entry will use this session to pick
the brains of the attending dance instructors. Participants are not
required to attend for the entire two hours. [NOTE: I am not looking
for instructors for this session. However, I would ask that anyone
teaching appear for this if possible, just to give any student who
does show up a wider range of brains to draw from. :) ]

And there ya go. Let the mad rush to teach classes begin! ;) Oh, and
if I've missed something, or y'all have schedule suggestions, I'd
love to hear those as well. :)

Come Heralds and Scribes, come one and all, to the Heralds and Scribes
Court Dance Ball!  The college of Blaiddwyn is sponsoring this free
ball.  There will be lots of dancing to the beautiful music by the
musicians of Scorpion Scales and a Bardic to end the evening.  We will
have entertainment to delight you and tables for playing board games and
to sit around visiting with friends.   Please bring your banners,
heraldic art, and scrolls to display and wear your heraldic garb.  We
invite new heralds to participate in heralding the dances and the
entertainment.  If you would like to entertain at this ball,  before the
ball begins and between the dance sets, or if you wish to herald  at the
ball, please contact Lady Barbara.  We are delighted  that Mistress
Arwen Southernwood and THL Guillaume de Gonzac, the Dance Mistress and
Dance Master of Caerthe and Master Alwen, the Dance Master  of
Dragonsspine, will be among those leading the dancing at this ball.  The

It’s May!  It’s May!  The lovely month of May!  Come join us in a May
Day Celebration of the performing arts at a mini-renaissance faire,
hosted by the al-Barran Court Dancers.  There will be dancing around two
Maypoles, court dancing, middle eastern dancing, drumming, a “May Day
Household Dance Competition”, singing, story telling, and puppetry.
There will also be period games for adults and children, a heavy weapons
tourney, a rapier tourney, merchants, a SCA items swap meet (clean out
your collection of “SCA items” and bring them to swap, sell, or give
away to newcomers and others) and classes for newcomers, along with
regular fighter practice.   We encourage you to wear your garb to this
event and bring your period games, musical instruments, pillows,
blankets, and chairs to sit on, as there will be lots of entertainment
in the “Town Square” !  We are looking for individuals or households to
sponsor and put on a heavy weapons tournament and a rapier tournament.
If you are interested in hosting a tournament, entertaining, or teaching
a class, please contact Lady Barbara.  We will have special events and
classes for newcomers, so this is a wonderful event to invite newcomers
and your friends to.   Come and make merry and contribute your talents
and gifts to make this a Magical Day!!

For the May Day Household Dance Competition, there will be eight dance
categories for adults and youth:  court dance, original court dance,
maypole dance, and middle eastern dance.   To enter this Household
competition, a household does not have to have dancers in each of the
eight categories and they may have more than one entry in a given
category (for example they may have two groups of dancers dancing
different dances in the original court dance adult division.)
Individuals, not affiliated with a household, may also enter this dance
competition.  Prizes will be awarded to the winners of each dance
competition, as well as to the winning household.  A sound system that
plays CDs and audio tapes will be provided on May 2nd.

The al-Barran Court Dancers, who are sponsoring this Household Dance
Competition, will give private court dance lessons to your household at
the park on Sundays during fighter practice or elsewhere.    We will
also make copies of the court dance music (just bring an audio tape to
the park) and even help you in selecting court dances for your
household  dance performing groups of two, three, four, six, eight,
members or more.  Maypole dance practices will be at fighter practice
park on Sundays 3/7, 3/28, 4/18 and 4/25 with  maypole practice for
everyone, 12:30-2:30pm.  Households may reserve time before or after
these times on these dates for working out their own maypole dances.
Please contact Lady Barbara,  for private dance lessons, and for
reserving private time to practice and work out dances with the
maypoles.  We also strongly recommend that your maypole dance
correographers attend some of the maypole dance practices, to figure out
how the maypole streamers react to different moves by the dancers.

Court dancing is certainly alive and well in al-Barran!  Court dance
practices are scheduled at fighter practice park (Battan Park, on Lomas,
NW corner of Carlisle & Lomas) for Sundays, 2/29, 3/7, 3/28, 4/18 & 4/25
from 12:30 to 2:30 pm.   Everyone, age 7 and up, is welcome at these
free court dance lessons.  (Note: the practice for 3/21 has been
canceled and replaced with one on 3/7.)    March 27, there will be the
“Heralds and Scribes Court Dance Ball”, from 7pm to 11pm at the student
union building (SUB) in Ballroom C at UNM, sponsored by the College of
Blaiddwyn.  This will be a free event.  (Please see the article
elsewhere in this Shaft.)  On April 3rd, at Sworded Affaire, there will
be several hours of court dance lessons during the day and a court dance
ball that evening after the feast.    Our wonderful al-Barran musicians,
Scorpion Scales, will fill the hall with their wonderful music for both
of these balls!    Those wishing to have Scorpion Scales play at their

I wish to thank Gabriel de Morland and Lord Gauvain Eisenbein of
Blaiddwyn for the opportunity to have a court dance ball and to teach
court dance classes at Winter Wolf  in January.  Thanks too to Lord
Canus Dragonblood and Lady Isabella al Harith for teaching  and leading
some of the dances during the Winter Wolf Court Dance Ball.   A very
special thank you to Lady Melody Shaw, who has been duplicating the sets
of 3 al-Barran court dance cds (originally created for us by the
generosity of Lord Sean of Rio de las Animas), that I have been giving
to the shires, cantons, colleges, and baronies in the Outlands, along
with the 8 page court dance instruction booklet of 34 dances that I
created, to help spread court dancing in the Outlands.  So far these
gift sets have been given to 9 of the 28 active SCA groups in the
Outlands.  Lady Lin Shiao Mei has diligently researched and located
almost all of the sheet music for those same 34 dances and has them
available for downloading to help other SCA musicians, at her website,
http://shiao_mei.home.comcast.net/sscales.html.

I was invited by Baroness Constance of the Citadel of the Southern Pass
to teach court dancing at their 12th Night & Investiture, January 17 in
El Paso and it was just delightful teaching court dancing to the Barons
and Baronesses of Caerthe and Dragonsspine.  Their dedication to
learning and their enjoyment of those dances, during those several
hours, is a memory I will long treasure.   A very special thank you to
Baron Sabastian, who made this trip possible, donated the fabric for 32
more maypole streamers, and custom made and donated our new, padded,
carrying bag for our park, dance practice boombox.  A very special thank
you also to Thalauriana, who sewed the 32 maypole streamers.

I am in charge of the children, youth and teen activities at Grand
Outlandish, May 27-30, 2004.  I hope you will volunteer to either help
with an activity, sponsor an activity, or put on an activity or class
for various age groups, ages 5 thru 17 or donate prizes.   For the
indoor type activities, we will have a tent, tables, and chairs.

I'm running with the assumption that we're going to start classes
around 9am, with a lunch break at noon. If this changes, I'll make

SATURDAY
9am - Introduction to Western European Dance. A general overview of
what we know about Western European dance. Designed to give the
student an idea of dance styles and forms which may further interest
them.

10am - Beginning 15th Century Italian Dance. An introductory class
to the styles and footwork of 15th century Italian dance. Will
include Amoroso, Petit Vriens and Rostiboli Gioioso. (taught by
Katheline)

11am - Intermediate 15th Century Italian Dance. A continuation of
study from the beginning class. We will look a little more in-depth
at other types of 15th century Italian dance.

1pm - 16th Century French Dance - Arbeau. A look at the dances found
in Arbeau - bransles, pavanes and so on. (taught by Katheline)

2pm - Beginning 16th Century Italian Dance. An introductory class on
the slightly more complex dances of 16th century Italy. The student
will be introduced to some new dance forms and some new steps. We
will be looking primarily at the dances of Fabritio Caroso.

3pm - Intermediate 16th Century Italian Dance. A continuation of the
beginning class, this session will take a look at Cesare Negri,
Caroso's partner-in-crime.

4pm - The Old Measures. England had dance in the 16th century too!
This class will introduce the student to the series of dances taught
in and around the Inns of Court and other great London institutions
of learning. (taught by Katheline)

SUNDAY
9am - Burgundian Bassedanse. The 15th century in Burgundy saw the
emergence of a particularly "logical" form of processional dance.
Students in this class will learn the formula of bassedanse, as well
as how to perform them.

10am - English Country Dance. Grandfathered in, the dances of this
class are first noted in 1651. However, they are among the most
popular dances done in the SCA and include such favorites as Hearts
Ease, Rufty Tufty and Upon a Summer's Day. [NOTE: dances mentioned
here are not necessarily those that have to be taught.]

11am - Dance Reconstruction. You've seen the dances, now come try
your hand and putting them together yourself! A dance from a period
source will be chosen, and class participants will learn the process
of reconstruction by working it out for themselves. If the dance
chosen is from a foreign repertoire, the class shall be provided
English translations to work from.

1pm - Galliards. Galliards were one of the most popular dance styles
of the 16th century. Queen Elizabeth scandalized Europe by dancing
them with Robert Dudley. Her father, Henry VIII, was enamoured of
the style, as it allowed him to show off his machismo (and his
rather shapely legs!). In this class, students will be introduced to
the basics of galliards. It's all improvisation - you can't get it
wrong!

2pm - Dance Etiquette, Improvisation and Ornamentation. Dance isn't
just about the choreographies. A large part of Western European
dance was improvisational - even in the midst of carefully-
constructed choreographies! In this class, we will have a gander at
the various forms of ornamentation available to a dancer and learn
how to flesh out a dance performance. We will also look at manner
and mannerisms as related to the successful  performance of period
dance in a period style. (somehow I'm thinking I'm going to get
stuck with this one, regardless :)

3pm - Dance Class Redux. These two hours will be a walk-in session
where any dance-related questions will, hopefully, be answered. It
is intended that anyone who is interested in dance and/or wishes
further help towards an Estrella entry will use this session to pick
the brains of the attending dance instructors. Participants are not
required to attend for the entire two hours. [NOTE: I am not looking
for instructors for this session. However, I would ask that anyone
teaching appear for this if possible, just to give any student who
does show up a wider range of brains to draw from. :) ]

And there ya go. Let the mad rush to teach classes begin! ;) Oh, and
if I've missed something, or y'all have schedule suggestions, I'd
love to hear those as well. :)

I have and excess of heavy duty sewing machines and have one availabe for
sale cheap within the SCA.  It is a Singer 31-15 industrial including the
stand/table, motor and acessories.  This is over 100 years old, parts are
available but you do not need any with this machine.  There is copy of the
original manual also included in the price of $200 OBO.  Make me an offer I
can not refuse and see how fast you can become the new owner.  With the
right offer I can deliver or meet you part way within the kingdom.
This is a straight stich machine, uses moderatly heavy threads and sews very
well on heavy fabrics such as canvas.  Check out the last Silver Pass prize
tent, that was sewn on this machine last summer.

al-Barran May Day Celebration

It’s May!  It’s May!  The lovely month of May!  Come join us in a May
Day Celebration of the performing arts at a mini-renaissance faire,
hosted by the al-Barran Court Dancers.  There will be dancing around two
Maypoles, court dancing, middle eastern dancing, drumming, a “May Day
Household Dance Competition”, singing, story telling, and puppetry.
There will also be period games for adults and children, a heavy weapons
tourney, a rapier tourney, merchants, a SCA items swap meet (clean out
your collection of “SCA items” and bring them to swap, sell, or give
away to newcomers and others) and classes for newcomers, along with
regular fighter practice.   We encourage you to wear your garb to this
event and bring your period games, musical instruments, pillows,
blankets, and chairs to sit on, as there will be lots of entertainment
in the “Town Square” !  We are looking for individuals or households to
sponsor and put on a heavy weapons tournament and a rapier tournament.
If you are interested in hosting a tournament, entertaining, or teaching
a class, please contact Lady Barbara.  We will have special events and
classes for newcomers, so this is a wonderful event to invite newcomers
and your friends to.   Come and make merry and contribute your talents
and gifts to make this a Magical Day!!

For the May Day Household Dance Competition, there will be six dance
categories for adults and youth:  court dance, maypole dance, and middle
eastern dance.   To enter this Household competition, a household does
not have to have dancers in each of the six categories and they may have
more than one entry in a given category (for example they may have two
groups of dancers dancing different dances in the original court dance
adult division.)  Individuals, not affiliated with a household, may also
enter this dance competition.  Prizes will be awarded to the winners of
each dance competition, as well as to the winning household.  A sound
system that plays CDs and audio tapes will be provided on May 2nd.

The al-Barran Court Dancers, who are sponsoring this Household Dance
Competition, will give private court dance lessons to your household at
the park on Sundays during fighter practice or elsewhere.    We will
also make copies of the court dance music (just bring an audio tape to
the park) and even help you in selecting court dances for your
household  dance performing groups of two, three, four, six, eight,
members or more.  Maypole dance practices will be at fighter practice
park on Sundays 3/7, 3/28, 4/18 and 4/25 with  maypole practice for
everyone, 12:30-2:30pm.  Households may reserve time before or after
these times on these dates for working out their own maypole dances.
Please contact Lady Barbara,  for private dance lessons, and for
reserving private time to practice and work out dances with the
maypoles.  We also strongly recommend that your maypole dance
correographers attend some of the maypole dance practices, to figure out
how the maypole streamers react to different moves by the dancers.

categories for the A&S war point will European Dance (court dancing).

Some of the Outlands court dance instructors and court dancers will be
holding a meeting, immediately after closing baronial court (court is
scheduled 4 to 4:30 pm) at the Heralds and Scribes Symposium, which is
at Dane Smith Hall (near the duck pond) at UNM (in Albuquerque).  The
purpose of this meeting is to share information, ideas,& plans and to
provide support for anyone who wishes to compete on behalf of the
Outlands. Anyone wishing to support the court dancers, at next year's
Estrella War, is also very welcome at this meeting.

The place of this meeting will be announced at this 4pm closing court
and the meeting will be either at Dane Smith Hall or at a nearby
restaurant, off of Central avenue (yet to be determined).  If you wish

4:30pm (or sooner, if baronial court is over sooner), for about one
hour.  We will start the meeting, where ever the al-Barran court was
held.  Note, I believe that Dane Smith Hall closes at 5pm, so we may be
outside for part of this meeting.  After one hour, those wishing to
discuss further this topic, will adjourn to a nearby restaurant to
discuss more over dinner, prior to the ball at 7pm.  We hope you will be
