      I just wanted to give everyone an update to our dance practice schedule.

      As you should already know, Caerthen dance practice is now held once a
month, normally the first Tuesday of the month, at the Englewood public library.

      HOWEVER - September 2nd is the day after Heroes and Legends, AND, Arwen and
I will be in the vicinity of Buffalo, NY, that day.  So September's dance
practice will be on Tuesday, September 9.  For those of you who have been to the
new site, we will be in the other meeting room, the Anderson Room, in the south
east corner of the library.

The court dance practice dates and locations for September & October have been set:

Sunday, Sept. 7, 12:30-2:30 pm, at the UNM duck pond (located next to the UNM library on the Univ.of N.M. campus.  Take Lomas to the light between Girard and University (which I believe is Yale).  Turn south onto that street till it deadends at the campus.  At that point the UNM library is the large, multi-storied building to your immediate left in front of you, and the duck pond is just to the west of that (to your immediate right, in front of you).  The Pack games is a Blaidwyn college event, with games, tourneys, etc. so wear a period outfit/garb.  The Pack games start earlier than 12:30pm.

Sunday, Sept. 14, 12:30-2:30 pm, at our "old"  fighter practice park, Jeanne Bellamah Park, 2 blocks south of Constitution, and 2 blocks west of Juan Tabo.  (Note:  fighter practice is moving Sept. 28th, "permanently" to a new location)

Sunday, October 5, 12:30-2:30 pm, at out "new permanent" fighter practice location--Battan Park, just west of Carlisle on the north side of Lomas (next to Walgreens.)   Note:  this is also an SCA event, "Esperanza" , so I would suggest that you wear garb if you have it.  There will be lots of activities, tournaments, etc.

Sunday, October 26, 12:30-2:30 pm at Battan Park.  (All future court dance practices will be held at Battan Park)

Saturday, November 1st, The al-Barran Court Dancers  are putting on a collegium and ball,  "The al-Barranian Court Dancing & Musicians Collegium and Ball"  There will be court dance lessons (two concurrent dance lesson tracks, beginning and internmediate, from 10 am to 5pm, with a break for lunch on your own.) and a musicians collegium, 1-5pm.  For those wishing to teach court dancing or start a court dance musicians group in their shire, canton, college or Barony, we will have court dance intstructions, tapes of dance music, and court dance sheet music for the same dances available for free.  We will have a potluck feast, 5:15-6:15pm, and then a court dance ball with live music (and some canned) from 6:30pm to 9:30pm (or later).  The location is St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 1500 Chelwood Park Blvd. NE (Chelwood is the major north-south street between Juan Tabo and Tramway, and the church is just north of Constitution.   I will send further details soon.  You can also go to the al-Barran website and there is a link to this event.

our various balls.  There will be a full day of court dance classes from
10 am to 5 pm with a break for lunch on your own.  Lemonade and tea will
be provided throughout the day.  We will have two informal dance
tracks--one for the  beginner dancers and a concurrent one for the
intermediate dancers.  From 3 to 5 pm we will also be teaching
“inner-kingdom” court dances, which are court dances that are being
currently taught in the various Outlands’ baronies and shires and danced
at their events, for those who play on the kingdom level and wish to
dance at out-of-town events in the Outlands.  For those of you wishing
to teach court dancing in your shires and baronies, Lady Barbara has
created a booklet of dance instruction and a set of court dance music
tapes for these dances, to give to you.

Musicians from our al-Barran Musicians group will be meeting with other
musicians from 1 to 5 pm to share music, information, etc.  They have a
great collection of court dance sheet music collected by Lady Lin Shiao

and are encouraged to print and bring with you to this event.   This
collection of dance music is based on the dances in Lady Barbara’s dance

We will be having a potluck feast prior to the Ball from 5:15 to 6:15 pm
with our Barony donating  a meat dish, bread, butter, tea and lemonade.
There will be lots of dancing of old and new court dances at our Court
Dance Ball from 6:30 to approximately 9:30 pm.  We are excited to have
our al-Barran Court Dance Musicians playing for part of the ball.  Our
theme for the ball is “Come as You are Not” which  means you  dress in
period garb, but in a way that you don’t usually dress for your
persona.  Masks are welcome, but not necessary.  We also encourage you
to bring a new, unwrapped toy (value of $5.00 or more) to donate to our
barony’s donation to Toys-for-Tots.  Anyone bringing a toy can deduct
$2.00 from their gate fee.  For our non-dancers, there will be gaming
tables for those who wish to play period board games throughout the
day.  There will also be a supervised children’s room from 10 am to 10
pm with activities for the children.  We ask that parents donate 2 hours
of their time during the day in the room for each of their children who
participate and bring a few of their children’s favorite toys.   Gate
fees are $4 for members and $7 for non-members.   The fee for children
and teens, ages 6 to 17, is $3 each, and children age 5 and under are
free.  There is a family cap of $20.  Please make your checks payable to

That's quite a spread!

I have known people who performed Flamenco or Irish Step Dancing, but I'm not
otherwise particularly familiar with these.  While their roots go back to late
period, the modern forms of these dances are very different.

1485 is nearly the earliest time from which we have documentation for how dance
was done.  There are several Italian manuscripts from the 2nd half of the 15th
century that describe a number of dances with step descriptions.  Very shortly
after 1485 we have manuscripts in Burgundy/France/Belgium that describe
literally hundreds of Bassa Dances.  The Bassa Dance form goes back to the
fourteenth century, so these may plausibly be projected back that far.

Most of our best documentation for period dance is from the 16th century.  And
we can see that it was clearly different from 15th century dance, so we cannot
fairly project these dances back in time.

1770 is, I think, prime contredanse time.  It's way outside of SCA period, but I
know there are contra dance groups in the NJ area.

1890 is generally awkward for dance recreation - there aren't many groups that
do this regularly.  There are some, however, mostly in CA and around NYC, I
think.  For this period, look for "Vintage Dance."  Susan di Guardiola is in
your general vicinity (Hartford, which is much closer to NJ than the rocky
mountains are to either of you).  I know she teaches Vintage Dance:  Check out
the Elegant Arts Society at http://www.elegantarts.org/ if you would like to
investigate this era further.  (Their page also has a brief overview of
Renaissance dance plus info on Regency dance.)

Well, I know of no documentation for any solo dancing in period, except for some
very sketchy descriptions of Morris (in Arbeau, 1588).  There are descriptions
of solo sections in couples dances, however, in the 15th c. Italian Balli.
There are several examples of one dancer leaving the other with a particular
step sequence, then returning (or the other catching up again).  I don't know if
this is what you are looking for, but it's what we know.  I have seen couples
improvise really cute "chasing" sequences, though, so it is something to look
at.  (Technically, this style cannot be projected back before about 1450, but
since so little else in known, you can just make do.)  Later styles (1580) have
alternating solo sections designed for improvisation.  While the authors clearly
expected that the man would do the more challenging footwork, our modern selves
don't mind ignoring this particular convention, although at least part of this
was because you can't see the woman's feet beneath her gown.

Bassa dances can reasonably be projected back to around 1350.  The Bassa Dance
is a stately dance for a line of couples, although one could certainly be done
by a single couple.

While we have no detailed descriptions for dance before 1445, we do know some
things about earlier dance.  What we mostly see, however, are circle or line
dances.  There are pictures of peasants dancing in an open line at festivals.
Pictures of court typically show a small circle of dancers.  The interesting
changes in tempo within a dance, very common after 1450, do not seem to have
been done before that time.

If you can find a partner, there are many possibilities.  If you don't mind some
humor, you can even turn a couples dance into a solo dance (if you get to
showing off, for instance, and your partner gets tired of waiting and sits
down).  So a talented partner isn't needed, just somebody to keep it proper.
Depending on what you are trying to do, a stately Bassa may be just the ticket.
Note that very few people would consider a Bassa Dance hard - usually they are
not even remotely challenging.  They do look good, though, and would be very
appropriate for a noblewoman or well to do non-noble.  For something more
energetic, you might consider a Saltarello.  This is a lively dance, and seems
to have been unchoreoraphed.

I hope this helps, at least to get you started.  If you would like to know more

This is a wonderful alternative.  While I know of no reference to
mother-daughter type partnering, there are plenty of references to two women
dancing together.  There is, for instance, a passage in Castiglione's "Book of
the Courtier" where two of the ladies dance together (at the command of the
Duchess, I think) even though there are men present.  Castiglione is discussing
the nature of a Perfect Courtier in the context of what he considers the most
nearly perfect court of the time, so this is clearly considered normal and
proper behavior.

Of course you don't train the young ones at events - one hires a dance master
for private lessons.

      This is just an update to let everyone know where we are with Caerthen
dance practice.  Tomorrow (Tuesday, 10/7) is our regular monthly meeting at the
Englewood Public Library.

      But wait, there's more!  Next week, we start twice a month practices at the
Colorado School of Mines (Caerthe's College of Scola Metallorum).  These
practices will be on the second and fourth Tuesdays of October and November.  So
this month we will meet on Tuesdays October 14 and 28.  Practices will be in the
Student Center.  Follow the signs to the room assigned on any given week.

      All practices nominally start at 6:30 (depending on traffic, Arwen and I
could be a few minutes late - please wait for us!).  Directions to the Library

Greetings all!

I just wanted to thank all my wonderful musicians for an overwhelming
successful debut this weekend.  I had such an incredible time, and without
you, it wouldn't have happened at all! I'd also like to thank the autocrats of
St.
Golias Feast Day, and of the Esperanza Tournament for the opportunity.

For those who didn't attend, we played at St. Golias Feast Day this past
Saturday (Oct. 4), for the after-feast court dancing.  Most of the feasters
stayed to dance, with instruction from the gracious Lady Barbara.

The music was provided by THL Asha, who plays the flute and the dumbek
(sp?), Lyneya del Filde, who plays the clarinet, Lady Melody Shaw, who
plays the recorder and tin whistle, Lindsey, who plays the guitar, and
directed by myself (Lin Shiao Mei), on the violin.

We played the al-Barranian Pavane (Belle Qui Tiens Ma Vie), Hole-in-the-
Wall (have the rest of you gotten that tune out of your head yet???), the
Official Bransle (Toss the Duchess), Gathering Peascods (the Male-Bonding
song), the Maltese Bransle, and Quen Quer Que.

Then, as if one event was not enough, we hurried back to al-Barran on
Sunday (Oct. 5) to play at the park for the Esperanza Tournament.  After
playing for the performing court dancers for a while, Baroness Fermina
requested attendees to join her in the list field to dance to Gathering
Peascods.  The circle of dancers filled the list field!  I must say, that I
really
like the effect of the armour clanking added to the male-bonding!

As can be expected, we are all happy, but exhausted, so our next practice
will not be until Sunday, October 12, at noon (Fighter Practice Park).

Our Musicians have been working very hard and practicing often, to provide music for over half the dances on Nov. 1 at our Ball, 6:30-9:30pm.
How many of these court dances do you know:  al-Barran Pavan (slow, stately, flirting dance);  Hole-in-the-Wall (our stealing dance); Gathering Peascods (aka Male Bonding); Ballo del Fiore (j's, z's, diagonals); Well Hall (waltz tune, longways set, similar to Hole-in-the-Wall, cloverleaf turn); Trenchmore (a fun, follow the leader, going over & under other couples' arms); Circle Waltz (a waltz tune, ladies twirl under the gentlemen's arms); Angus Reel (a partner dance in a circle with a back-to-back movement); Maltese Bransle (no partner needed, step into the circle, tempo increases);  Official Bransle (aka "toss the wench" or "toss the duchess"); Horses Bransle; Pinwheel (a "called dance", done with a partner in a circle, with one partner touching the hands of other dancers, like spokes on a wheel); Petit Riens (a 3 person, chasing & flirting dance, done a couple of years ago at mid-Winter); Amoroso (a fun, chasing & flirting dance, taught recently at dance practice); Quen Quer Que (a large circle dance, no partners needed, newly taught at dance practice.)

If you want to learn or practice these dances before the ball, there will be a court dance practice Sunday, October 26, at Battan Park in Albuquerque, 12:30-2:30pm.  There will also be 14 hours of dance classes in two dance tracks (beginning  & intermediate) from 10am to 5pm at our Nov. 1st. event.
Court Dance practices for November will be Nov. 2 & Nov. 14 at Battan Park, 12:30-2:30pm.  Battan Park is at the NW corner of Lomas & Carlisle, on Lomas next to Walgreens.

Come one and all to al-Barran’s Court Dancing and Musicians Collegium and Ball.  Come refresh your memory on court dances you know and learn new ones, including court dances that are being danced inner-kingdom,  so that as you travel around the Outlands, you will know the dances at our various balls.  There will be a full day of court dance classes from 10 am to 5 pm with a break for lunch on your own.  Lemonade and tea will be provided throughout the day.  We will have two informal dance tracks--one for the  beginner dancers and a concurrent one for the intermediate dancers.  I am delighted to announce that Mistress Arwen & THL Guillaume of Caerthe will be teaching at our Dancing Collegium.  From 3 to 5 pm we will also be teaching “inner-kingdom” court dances, which are court dances that are currently being taught in the various Outlands’ baronies and shires and danced at their events, for those who play on the kingdom level and wish to dance at out-of-town events in the Outlands.  For those of you wishing to teach court dancing in your shires and baronies, Lady Barbara has created a booklet of dance instruction and a set of court dance music tapes for these dances, to give to you.
Musicians from our al-Barran Musicians group will be meeting with other musicians from 1 to 5 pm to share music, information, etc.  They have a great collection of court dance sheet music collected by Lady Lin Shiao Mei (shiao_mei@..., 505-934-3952),  which you can download from her website at  http://mywebpages.comcast.net/shiao_mei/crtdance.pdf    and are encouraged to print and bring with you to this event.   This collection of dance music is based on the dances in Lady Barbara’s dance instruction booklet.

We will be having a potluck feast prior to the Ball from 5:15 to 6:15 pm with our Barony donating  a meat dish, bread, butter, tea and lemonade.  There will be lots of dancing of old and new court dances at our Court Dance Ball from 6:30 to approximately 9:30 pm.  We are excited to have our al-Barran Court Dance Musicians playing for part of the ball.  Our theme for the ball is “Come as You are Not” which  means you  dress in period garb, but in a way that you don’t usually dress for your persona.  Masks are welcome, but not necessary.  We also encourage you to bring a new, unwrapped toy (value of $5.00 or more) to donate to our barony’s donation to Toys-for-Tots.  Anyone bringing a toy can deduct $2.00 from their gate fee.  For our non-dancers, there will be gaming tables for those who wish to play period board games throughout the day.  There will also be a supervised children’s room from 10 am to 10 pm with activities for the children.  We ask that parents donate 2 hours of their time during the day in the room for each of their children who participate and bring a few of their children’s favorite toys.   Gate fees are $4 for members and $7 for non-members.   The fee for children and teens, ages 6 to 17, is $3 each, and children age 5 and under are free.  There is a family cap of $20.  Please make your checks payable to “SCA al-Barran.”  Please note, this is a dry site, so no alcohol is allowed at the site.

We have some period looking pictures on a computer, which we would like to have on pieces of cloth "for educational purposes".  We can print copies (B&W and color) and would like to inexpensively somehow transfer them to cloth, without having to pay a printing firm to do so.

Any ideas?  I need specifics, such as names and steps.

1st edition Playford, 1651.  This is an unusual dance, and, as Playford's
descriptions are more like shorthand notes, the are several SCA reconstructions
that seem to fit the original description, but are very different in
appearance.  In Caerthe we use a reconstruction from the barony of Carolingia
(East Kingdom) from about 22-23 years ago (I was there - and Mike Bergman may
have been, too).

Sixth edition Playford, 1679.  A facsimile of the original music is on the web
page "The Dancing Master, 1651-1728:  An Illustrated Compendium" at
http://www.izaak.unh.edu/nhltmd/indexes/dancingmaster/ - this resource has a
shorthand comparison of every dance as it appeared in each edition of the
Dancing Master, so it is an excellent resource for identifying when a given
dance first appeared in Playford, and whether a given dance changed over time.
Some dances, for instance, appear in almost every edition - but after the eigth
or tenth edition, the dance and music are completely different and only the name
is the same.  At least a couple of dances have corrections in the second or
third edition.

I do not have a modern arrangement of music for this dance.  Perhaps somebody
else on this list?

Please forward the following information to at least one other person and to each of the Outlands lists.  We are trying to especially help each Shire, Canton, College and Barony, that does not yet have a court dancing teacher or musicians group get started by giving them private dance lessons, CDs of court dance music, a court dance instruction booklet, and our wonderful  source (website) for sheet music for these same dances (see below).  For those who have children, we have a 12 hour Children's Activity Room from 10am to 10pm.

Please contact your friends, your students, cadets, squires, households, special interest groups, and your lists (archery, bardic, seneschals, peers, rapier, heavy fighting, shire, canton, barony, sewing, arts & sciences, heraldry, performance arts, etc.) and everyone, who has ever told you "I can't dance, I have two left feet" (because we have a caiergen that can fix that).
