Members are free to discuss and share information and their thoughts and opinions about issues related to outdoor lighting including public policy, public opinion, technical lighting issues, lighting science, and the environmental, social, health, economic and spiritual impacts related to lighting usage and light pollution. Members can also discuss and by consensus determine the protocol of the list.

The continual availability of archives gives members the option to select the "no email/web only" option, which provides a means to catch up on missed postings without an overloaded inbox.
