The history:
The idea behind Out In The Park was simple. A bunch of gay friends (OK, 40+) got together at Riverside Park on July 26, 1997 just to have a good time. They had a great time on a wonderful, sunny, Saturday afternoon in July. While they were there, they talked about what a great time they were having and wondered "What if the whole park were full of gay men and lesbian women? Hey, if we contacted EVERY GLBTQS organization in the New England and New York area and invited them to a Gay Day at Riverside Park (now Six Flags New England), think of how many people there would be? Hey, it ain't Disneyworld, but a lot of us just can't afford to go to Disneyworld, so let's do it here in New England at New England's SuperPark!"
We wanted a date close to October 11th since it is National Coming Out Day. So we chose the last Saturday in September because the weather is usually still warm and sunny. And hey, "What a great warm-up event for NCOD!". So invite everyone you know who are "family" or friends to join us for a great time for "the whole family".
After changing the date a few times to work around different events at Six Flags over the years, and based on attendees' feedback, we finally decided to go with one fixed day in the year (like they do for Gay Day at Walt Disney World in Orlando). And So in 2000 we chose the 3rd Sunday of September.
We're here, We're Queer and We're having the time of our lives!
In 1997, we had over 1000 attendees. In 2005 and 2006, we counted over 7000! We expect over 10,000 in 2007! Get Out For Fun!
