The papal envoy in Istanbul, otherwise known as Patriarch Bartholomew, continues his attacks on the Fathers of the Monastery of Esphigmenou on Mt. Athos.

On Wednesday, September 14, 2005, a group of pilgrims from Toronto met with Fr. Methodios, the abbot of the Esphigmenou Monastery.  During this meeting he informed us that the Greek courts had given Patriarch Bartholomew the legal right to set up a parallel monastic establishment known as Esphigmenou

This new group now has the legal authority to claim ownership of all the assets of the monastery.  The purpose behind this tactic is to starve out the more than 100 novices and fathers of the Monastery. Fifteen of the fathers are over 80, three of theme over 100 and are bedridden.

In the last few weeks the persecution of the fathers has intensified but the Greek media turns a blind eye on what is happening.  Two significant events have been totally ignored.

On Saturday, October 1, 2005, over 4,000 supporters of the Monastery, from all over Greece, assembled at Ouranoupolis, a town on the Mt. Athos border.  Many of them left their homes on Friday evening and travelled all night in stormy weather.  The rainfall was so severe in Northern Greece that the road to Ouranoupolis was washed out, trees were uprooted, power lines were down and one of the buses was stuck in the mud.  About 10:00am, just as all the supporters were deciding to return to their homes, the rain stopped, the sun came out, 3 road machines came and repaired the road and all the buses and automobiles went on to Ouranopolis.    Various representatives of Orthodox lay associations spoke.  An official protest was signed by these representatives and given to the Greek government officials in Ouranoupolis.  At about 2:30pm the supporters of the monastery boarded their buses to leave.  Just at that time, the sun disappeared and the severe weather returned.  All who were present were amazed and proclaimed that the Mother of God held back the weather.  The Greek media busied itself with reporting labour union unrest, petty crimes and scandals.  Not a word was said or written about the gathering of all these True Orthodox Christians and the severe weather which threatened them.

The hostility against the monastery was was also brought to light recently when two young men from the Cosmas of Aetolia Parish in Lanham, Maryland, went to visit the fathers at Esphigmenou.  Mt. Athos now has roads and there is a bus service operated by some monks.  The two young men boarded a bus and when the monk-bus driver learned that they were planning to visit the Esphigmenou Monastery, he made them leave the bus in the middle of no where.  They began to walk on a fairly wide path, but ended up crawling under thorny bushes and brush, because the path disappeared.   They wondered all night in the damp rainy weather surrounded by  jackals.   In the morning they were rescued by Greek authorities who were searching for them.  This too was ignored by the Greek Media.

Please keep the fathers of the Esphigmenou Monastery in your prayers and inform others of their struggle.

I have uploaded two photos and an ikon which I found in one of the monasteries in Greece which shows the Church Under Attack by Heretics.  If you are interested in seeing them and/or downloading them, go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hocna/, click on Photos and then click on Esphigmenou.

One of our parishioners has set up a web site which I believe you will find informative.

Subject: Possible Pre-Constantinian Church Discovered
petercarras@...
Send Email Send Email

Several news agencies have released an announcement, made by Israeli archaeologists last Saturday, that they have uncovered some remains of a Church which appears to have been in use during the late years of the Roman persecution.   This is significant because it appears that this is the remains of one of the earliest Churches found. The remains of the Church were found during a dig for possible artifacts before the planned construction of a new prison wing for the maximum security prison at Megiddo.  The discovery was actually made about eighteen months ago and about two weeks ago the mosaics were uncovered.

Two significant mosaics were uncovered under the ruins of a later Byzantine structure.   One mosaic has a Greek inscription with the name of a man and four women who funded both it and the Holy Table that once stood on it.   The inscription is in the form of a prayer asking the Lord Jesus Christ to remember the donors. The other is a mosaic of two fish.  The fish was used widely in the Early Church as an ikonic symbol of our Lord.  The Greek word for fish, ICQUS, is made up of the five initial letters of the phrase, Jesus Christ Son of God Saviour.  The fish was also an ikonic symbol of the Creed and had a central position in the life of the early Church that was not free to proclaim its Creed.

It is possible that this Church, which was built in the style of a hall, was a House-Church.  During the Roman Persecution, Christians would come together at the home of a prominent Christian, who had a room large enough to be a Church.  It is also possible, however, that this Church was built during a time of calm.  Christians faced varying levels of persecution under the Roman Empire, interspersed with periods of calm. It was during such a lull that the Church could have been built to serve a local Christian community.

The combination of the illegal wall and the militarised fences that surround the city of Bethlehem has made its 160,000 citizens prisoners and hostages of an Israeli government which seeks to drive Christians out of the Holy Lands.

The Israelis have set up only two gates in and out of Bethlehem and this is killing the city.  The number of tourists visiting Bethlehem has dropped from nearly 92,000 in 2000 to a mere 7,249 in 2004.  In the last five years 9.3 per cent of the Christian population of Bethlehem has emigrated.

This is  genocide and we can not stand by silently.  We should all pray that peace returns to Bethlehem and that our Lord will deem us worthy to venerate the place of His Birth.

We can also contact our local and federal politicians and let them know of our concerns.  On the web we can send a message to the WALL at http://www.openbethlehem.org/ .  Click on Leave your Message.

Subject: 3 Esphigmenou Fathers Beaten
petercarras@...

This morning we spoke with Fr. Methodios, Abbot of the Holy Monastery of Esphigmenou on Mt. Athos, and learned that three fathers were injured in an attempt by monks, faithful to Patriarch Bartholomew, to take possession of the Monastery's administrative offices in Karyes.

AP news covered this story as well as the Greek television channel, Antenna1, but tried to whitewash this tragic event.

Antenna1's web site does not mention at all that this incident was organized by monks faithful to Bartholomew but blames it all on a group of Albanians

The AP news release reports a bitter fight between Church authorities and a rebel monastery turned violent.  They omitted the fact that the so-called Church Authorities were a gang of monks and their Albanian Workmen.  It also falsely reports a police spokesman said nobody was injured in the clashes.  The truth is that 3 fathers were injured.

All monasteries on Mt. Athos have an administrative office in the town of Karyes.  Karyes is the administrative centre of Mt. Athos and representatives from all Monasteries are found on the administrative council.  The representative of the Monastery of Esphigmenou has been expelled from this administrative council which supports the heretical Bartholomew.

At the time of the attack there were 8 fathers present when Bartholomew's gang of monks attacked the fathers of Esphigmenou with pickaxes, spades and crowbars.  The fathers could not use the office's telephone because the Greek Government cut telephone service to the office.  They were, however, able to use a cell phone to call police.  As reported before, the local Greek authorities are not allowing medical supplies to be brought to the Monastery.  There are 15 fathers at the Monastery that are old and ill and there will be a major crisis when existing medical supplies are exhausted.  Please keep the fathers in your prayers.

As usual, the Greek media is trying to bury this incident.  The Greek daily Kathemerini, an internationally famous newspaper has yet to report anything.  I suggest emailing the editor editor@... and asking why this incident remains unreported.

On December 2nd, 2005, the Religious News Network in Greece published a report that the Greek Government will send the Foreign Office's Undersecretary, Panagiotes Skandalakis, to Mount Athos to look into the  Esphigmenou Monastery problem and seek a peaceful solution.

This action follows a request from the monastic administrative council of Mt. Athos for the expulsion of the civil administrator of Mt. Athos. The monastic adminstrative council was angered by the fact that Mr. George Dalakouras did not do their bidding to use force against the fathers of Esphigmenou.

I wondered why the Greek government was not doing the bidding of Patriarch Bartholomew until I read the U. S. State Department's Human Rights in Greece Report.  The State Department specifically mentions the human rights violations against the fathers of Esphigmenou.

I guess for those who have no fear of God it is good to have the fear of the dog.

This last Thursday, December 22, 2005, the Mothers and Novices of the Holy Nativity Convent in Brookline, celebrated their 21st anniversary of their moving in to their new building.

It is significant that this day was marked with the installation of a mosaic ikon of the Nativity of our Saviour over the entrance to the Convent.

I can remember the humble origins of the Convent and glorify God for allowing me to witness the hand of God as it led the mothers along the path of Orthodox monastic life.

Today we see the many blessings which the Lord has granted us through our monastic communities.  When I see the Menaion which was recently published by Holy Transfiguration Monastery, the Frescoes of the Fathers of the Monastery of St. Gregory of Sinai and now the Mosaic of the Holy Nativity, I can not but remember back to the sixties when there was a spiritual drought and no one could imagine that any of this would ever happen.  We did not even have the incense and mounted ikons which are so abundant today.

Let us all keep the Fathers and Mothers of our Monastic Communities in our prayers and glorify God for the many blessing that we receive from their hands.

I have attached a copy of the new mosaic ikon to this email.  If you have any problems in viewing it, go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hocna/

Russia Pilgrimage 2006
Dear Reverend Fathers and Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
As some of you may know, the RMS is sponsoring a pilgrimage to Russia this coming Spring, from May 25 through June 9, 2006. The purpose of this pilgrimage to Russia is not only to worship at the shrines, but also to encourage the catacomb Christians of Russia and to serve them.
As one of the largest Orthodox Empires in history (until this past century), Russia is a treasure trove of Churches, icons, holy shrines, and holy relics of unsurpassed beauty and spiritual blessings. To make a pilgrimage to these holy places is a great blessing, and  a source of spiritual strength and encouragement for every Orthodox Christian.
The funds of the Missionary Society (which are generated almost solely from the annual Russia pilgrimage) make it possible for Father Alexei to take Holy Communion and hear the confessions of the nuns in the Kazan area, the Christians in Moscow, the Crimea, Belorussia and elsewhere. Not only is this pilgrimage a great blessing and gift for the Orthodox pilgrim, but it becomes a source of benefactions for many struggling and poor Orthodox Christians in Russia.
We pray that many people will make the decision to join Metropolitan Macarios this Spring for the Russia pilgrimage it will take place in the Paschal season, and pilgrims will enjoy the added blessing of visiting  the churches while they are decorated in their Paschal best!
Wont you please join Metropolitan Macarios, Father George Kochergin and Mother Seraphima in this most special, meaningful pilgrimage? Or if you are not able to go yourself, would you consider sponsoring another Christian to go in your place to pray for you and your family? The cost of this two-week pilgrimage is $2,370 plus a $130 visa fee. If you wish to join the group, please reserve your place by January 11th, 2006 by contacting Father Yakov Tseitlin at: yakov@... or at (978)394-0994. A $200 deposit of the total pilgrimage cost is requested in order to secure your place.
Checks should be made payable to "Russia Missionary Society" and mailed to Holy Nativity Convent, 70 Codman Road, Brookline, MA 02445. Attn: Mother Seraphima.
This years pilgrim group will also, for the first time, visit the beautiful, historical cities of Suzdal and Vladimir the complete itinerary is attached.

This e-mail is from one of the pilgrims Justin Daniel from this year's pilgrimage.  He has been in Jerusalem since we have all left and has captured the stirring of the waters of the Jordan River as it starts to flow the opposite way once it's blessed three times..Read his report below along with the pictures of the his video that he took.  Truly amazing!  From the 1st picture to the last you can notice the change in direction of the ripples in the water.  Read below.

Evangelos Stavroullakis

There is such a stir in the international media currently about the miracle that occurs annually on Theophany at the River Jordan.  I'll include the "Interfax" report that I've seen, although it misrepresents some of the facts, as well as, some of my own pictures from that day.  Basically, every year at the service of the Blessing of the Water at the Jordan River on Theophany this miracle occurs, just as it describes in the hymnology for the feast.  The water is stirred, in places it looks like it's bubbling up and in others it actually starts flowing upstream, or is turned back towards it's source, away from the Dead Sea.  We had found a good spot on the banks while we waited for the Patriarch and procession to come down to the waters edge, and we observed the water to be so still it was almost smooth as glass.  After the prayers of blessing and the Patriarch threw the Cross into the water for the third time, the miracle occurred.  It actually lasted the entire time we were there at the water (about an hour), and was still occurring while we were leaving.  It was amazing to witness and the crowd was really moved by the event too.  I was blessed to be able to go in myself and the water was invigorating!  I also recently heard, in the wake of the media hype about the miracle on Theophany, that there is also a miracle that occurs annually on the feast of the Transfiguration on Mount Tabor with a cloud of light that descends toward the end of Liturgy close enough at times to be able to touch.  God willing I might be able to witness that one day!  It is amazing to marvel over these manifestations of God's grace (in addition to the Holy Light & Fire that appears at Pascha!) & merciful encouragement for us as we celebrate these holy feasts in the holy places...and the fact that they occur every year!  I also am planning, and I hope that God blesses, to return for Pascha to see the Holy Light & experience the Holy Fire.  So far only one person is going to try to meet me here from the States, but you're still invited!  Please keep me in your prayers as I leave on Thursday for Egypt for 2-3 weeks, and then on to Mount Athos for Great Lent.

The Biblical miracle recurs on the Jordan during the
Epiphany Day
Moscow, January 24, Interfax - Some five thousand pilgrims from various countries became witnesses to a sign that appeared on the holy River of Jordan on the Epiphany Day (January 6/19).

Immediately after Patriarch Theophilos of Jerusalem performed the rite of the blessing of water, the Jordan boiled up and began to flow back, just as it happened after the baptism of Christ, the Zhizn (Li!
fe) daily
writes.

Right after silver crosses were thrown into its calm waters after the prayer, the river boiled up. A maelstrom developed and the current flowed back for a several minutes.

An ecstatic cry of five thousand people resounded over the Jewish desert. People refused to believe their own eyes, just as they did two thousand years when the Jordan turned its current after Jesus Christ entered its waters, the newspaper writes.

These are stills from short video clips I took of the miracle at the Jordan River on my small digital camera.  The quality is ok, but you can still see the water is in action, not smooth like glass shortly before the blessing took place.  You can probably zoom in on my shot of the Jordan River in the first e-mail to compare what the water looked like beforehand.
-Justin

Here are some frames taken from Justin's video of the Jordan River after it started "turning back" following the Great Blessing by Patriarch Theophilos on the Eve of Theophany.  Something to keep in mind:  before the blessing, the surface of the river was very calm, without any ripples in it.

At the Praises of Cheesefare Sunday we chant The arena of the virtues has been opened.   The beginning of Great Lent is at hand and we are called  to enter this arena,  armed with the Grace of God, to struggle against all that separates us from our Lord.  We are in the arena and the angels are the spectators that encourage us not to give in to our sinful shortcomings.

Fasting and prayer are essential components of our struggle. They are the two sides of the double edged sword that cuts into our self-will.   This sword, however, is a living sword and the strength behind this sword is our sorrow of separation from our Creator.

Cheesefare Sunday is the remembrance of Adam's disobedience, separation from God and his lament.  While in Paradise, Adam did not ask the Lord for forgiveness and in this way sealed his separation from the Heavenly Father.  The Sunday of Forgiveness is the door through which we must enter the arena.  First we must lament over our separation from the Kingdom of Heaven and ask our Lord to open the door so that we may return.  Secondly we must ask forgiveness from our brothers and sisters.

These are maneuvers required to receive the reward of  our struggle in  the arena.  May we all have a blessed struggle and receive the Light of our Resurrected Lord.

Please keep me in your prayers and forgive all my offenses.

In Christ,

We have completed the course of the first week of the struggle of the fast on our journey to the Pascha of our Christ.

Those of you that have had the opportunity to struggle in fasting and practicing a little quiet and withdrawal from the din of the media know by experience the many benefits of the Great Lent. Already we are at that great feast of the Church, The Sunday of Orthodoxy. On this Sunday we celebrate the triumph of the holy icons and the recapitulation of the triumphs achieved by all of the Ecumenical Councils that came before. On this day we celebrate the incarnation of the God-Man made manifest as depicted in holy icons. In words, in writings, in deeds, and in our sacred art forms we proclaim the Way of Salvation to the world. Brothers and Sisters in Christ, we celebrate God’s great condescension and love for us, how He has provided that we be sanctified by all of our senses and led up to a knowledge of Him through the sacred rituals of the Holy Church. Our God has done all things well that we be saved. As the proclamation is expressed in the service for the Sunday of Orthodoxy, “What God is as great as our God? Thou art our God, Who alone workest wonders.[1].”

Even in these latter days, these days of spiritual confusion, we have even more reason to be grateful for this feast. This feast more than any other expresses the principle by which we can discover the Truth of Him Who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life and this principle is the consensus of the teachings of the Holy Fathers. As the Synodicon proclaims:

As the Prophets have seen, as the Apostles have taught, as the Church has received, as the teachers have set forth in dogmas, as the whole world has understood, as grace has illuminated, as the truth was demonstrated, as falsehood was banished, as wisdom spoke boldly, as Christ has awarded; thus do we believe, thus we speak, thus we preach and honour Christ our true God and His saints, in words, in writings, in thoughts, in sacrifices, in temples, and in icons; we worship and respect the Former as God and Master, and we honour and apportion relative worship to the others, for the sake of our common Master since they are His genuine servants,
[Exclamation from Without]

This is the Faith of the Apostles, this is the Faith of the Fathers, this is the Faith of the Orthodox, this Faith hath established the world.

The consensus of the Holy God-bearing Fathers is a lighthouse that helps us direct our little boats over the sea of life.

Even if we are only beginning our spiritual journey and it seems like our goal is a long way off, we can see this lighthouse, because it is the light of the Holy Spirit. As long as we keep our eye on the lighthouse of their teaching, we have good hope of arriving in the Land of the Living. Yet, conversely, if a person who seems to have a mighty ship and has made spiritual progress turns away from that light through spiritual presumption or pride, that man becomes lost whether he has the title of Patriarch, Archbishop, Metropolitan, Bishop, Archimandrite, Priest, Elder, renowned ascetic or layman. For this reason the Elder Ieronymos used to say, “Call no man blessed before his end.” The Holy Fathers feared the changeability in man’s nature that was demonstrated by the many men who made an excellent beginning and then went astray.

That is why the great Apostle Paul taught us that even if an angel come from heaven or a man that seems to live the life of an angel teaching an immoral way of life, doctrine or morality that we have not received from the Apostles, we proclaim to them Anathema. Numbers mean nothing, titles mean nothing, many have fallen away even after initially demonstrating what seemed a good life.

We are most blessed in that we have as our guide the clear successor to these Holy Fathers whose incorrupt relics are a clear testimony to his sanctity, that is Saint Philaret Metropolitan of New York. We rejoice in his memory and yet there is sadness on this feast in that there are no true successors of him in that Church. His successor followed evil advice and redirected the entire Russian Church Abroad to a different path. We see Orthodoxy betrayed and our departure from them fully justified by recent events in that ecclesiastical body. Let us pray for the enlightenment of their leaders or at least that some of those that are being deceived into union with the Soviet Church[2] have their eyes opened by God Himself.

Because of the human element found in the Church, heresies and scandals arise from time to time. This does not reflect on the Church, but on the person who has gone astray. If we keep our eye on the lighthouse, no scandal or failing or false teaching can deflect us from arriving at our true homeland, participation in the grace of the Holy Trinity.

In Christ faithfully, your suppliant unto the Lord,

+Metropolitan Moses

The latest issue, Numbers 35 and 36 contains an article by Fr. Fr. Michael's article should be studied by all and if there are elements within the article that you do not understand or need some clarification, just speak to your spiritual father.  If you need to you can always email me.

There is also an article on St. Constantine that attempts to provide a look at St. Constantine as a man of faith.  Included also is the first full presentation of the lenghty Life of St. Stephen of Perm.  This is followed by a Book Review of The Truth.

A Sermon
of
His Eminence, Metropolitan Moses of Seattle
2006 Sunday of Saint Gregory Palamas
In the Name of the Father, and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
The Holy Fast is an archetype of the life of spiritual progress.
We crossed over into the arena of fasting by seeking mutual forgiveness, the first Sunday of the fast, we celebrated the triumph of Orthodoxy, true glory, true worship and the conciliar Tradition of the Church and the principle of the consensus of the Holy God-Bearing Fathers that enlightens our path to salvation. Without the true faith, our labors are in vain.
In fitting manner we progress to this Sunday wherein we celebrate the feast of our Holy Father among the saints, Gregory Palamas, who expounded the workings of Grace more than any other Church Father. Saint Gregory was a great man of prayer and was made manifest as a wonder-worker while still in his late twenties. This great saint of our Church was given a special grace to articulate his mystical experiences.
From the life of Saint Gregory:
Another time, in a state of noetic prayer, Gregory fell into a light sleep. It appeared to him that in his hands was there was a vessel of pure milk, so full that it was flowing over the brim. Then this milk took the form of wine, which flowed over the brim of the vessel onto his hands and clothes, spreading abroad a wonderful fragrance. As soon as Gregory perceived it, he was filled with holy joy.
There appeared to him a radiant youth who said, “Why do you not pass on this wonderful drink, left by you without due attention. This is the ever-inexhaustible gift from God.”
“To whom should I pass on this drink when there is no on in need of it?” asked saint Gregory.
“Even if at the present moment there is no one actually thirsting for the drink,” answered the youth, “yet, nevertheless, you should do your duty and not neglect this gift of God. With the proper use of which, you will have to answer before God.” With these words the wondrous vision came to an end.

Saint Gregory interpreted it in this way: The milk meant the ordinary gift of the word, understandable to very simple hearts looking for spiritual instruction The turning of milk in to wine meant that when the time comes, the Supreme-Will will ask him for deeper instructions of the sublime Christian Faith.
Thus, things that are beyond the mind of man, beyond the grasp of philosophical inquiry are imparted to us not by speculation, but by men of spiritual experience. Saint Gregory defended the Orthodox doctrine on how we participate in God, how we become partakers of God’s uncreated energies, i.e., the holy truths of our Church regarding Theosis, or deification.
In the days of Saint Gregory one Barlaam of Calabria arrived in the parts of the east and spread his false teaching that God Himself does not unite with man or enter into man’s heart, but that God creates a grace that He imparts to man. This is because in the parts of the west they were immersed more in the Greek philosophers than the Gospel. They tried to force Christian revelation into Pagan Greek philosophical constructs.
Consistent with the God bearing Fathers, Saint Gregory explained for us that only nonbeing is without operation. All creatures have operation and activity. If one were to say that the operation or energy of the Holy Trinity was created then the logical conclusion is that the Holy Trinity is created (which is blasphemy). Uncreated nature has an uncreated energy.
Thus, Essence is cause and Energy is effect. This revealed Spiritual Truth, affects our world-view and gives us a precise perspective on spiritual reality. God is completely distinct from His creation, there is no similarity. We partake of life, He is the Source of life. He brought all things into being from nothing and is Beyond Being. The Church teaches that God is completely transcendent and unapproachable in His essence, but we partake of His energies. The correct understanding of the distinction between the essence of God and His uncreated energies, given unto us by the God-bearing Fathers, is one of the greatest gifts of Orthodox theology. This spiritual insight is the only way to properly understand the words of Saint Peter when he says that we are called upon to, “be partakers of the Divine Nature.” The Church has its own vocabulary and understanding, without which it is impossible to grasp the meaning of the Holy Scriptures.
When we read in scripture of the glory of God, His illumination, a Divine light, etc. this refers to the uncreated grace of God that we are called to participate in. As our Savior said, “For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when He shall come in His own glory, and in His Father's, and of the holy angels” (Luke 9: 26). This glory is the uncreated Energy of God (Divine Grace) that emanates from the Holy Trinity, of which both angels and men partake.
Saint Basil the Great expressed this quest to acquire the Grace of God thus, “The contest for virtue is the struggle for one to become God and a son by the illumination of the most pure light of that day which is uninterrupted by darkness. He that shines forth with the true light has made virtue as another sun, which having once shined upon us no longer hides itself in the west; but having clothed all things with its illuminating power, it grants an unceasing and perpetual light unto the worthy and makes into other suns those who partake of that light.”
Saint Gregory also taught that we participate in the uncreated grace of God in both soul and body, thus overturning all of the spiritual error of the dualists, both ancient and modern.[1] The Church teaches that when God made man He made “all things very good.” It is sin, man’s misuse of free will that is the cause of everything wrong in creation. Thus Christ became the New Adam that we might be made new and become temples of the Holy Spirit. What is the significance of this spiritual truth?
 Your body belongs to God.
The only variation on this is in Christian marriage, when the two become one flesh. The husband’s body belongs to the wife and the wife’s body belongs to the husband. For a man, every woman in the world is his sister, unless he gets married, then he has one wife. For a woman, every man in the world is a brother, unless she gets married, then she has one husband. God Himself has implanted the law of attraction and He has ordained that marriage has certain consolations that are to be reserved for marriage. This is the definition of chastity.
The Church is a spiritual hospital and has always offered the therapy of repentance to those who have fallen into sin. Our contemporary problem is that there are many who, with malicious intent, wish to change the law of God. They trivialize the body and the Christian concept of purity and want to remove sex from the proper context. For this reason we need to repeat to our youth again and again that popular culture has it all wrong. We are called to become temples of the living God and these things matter. The custom of “sowing wild oats” is a great spiritual error. Chastity is bodily purity and godliness. One who lives in chastity has good hopes to become a temple of the Living God, in Christ Jesus.
As Saint Peter so wisely put it in his introduction to his Second Catholic (universal) Epistle:
Grace and peace be multiplied unto you in the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, according as His divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him Who hath called us by glory and virtue; by which are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises, so that through these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. And for this cause, by applying all diligence, add virtue to your faith, and to virtue, knowledge, and to knowledge, continence, and to continence, patience, and to patience, godliness, and to godliness, brotherly affection, and to brother affection, love. For if these things be in you, and abound, they render you neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. (2 Peter 1:2-8)
May we pay heed to these words and come to the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ by participation in His Grace, to Whom be all glory, honor and worship, with His Unoriginate Father and All Holy Life Creating Spirit. So be it. Amen.
[1] Dualist doctrine claims that only the soul is good and worthy and the body is evil and that upon death the soul is liberated from the body and only then enters its true existence.

A Sermon
of
His Eminence, Metropolitan Moses of Seattle
 2006 Sunday of The Cross
In the Name of the Father, and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
We continue our journey to the Pascha of Christ.  On the first Sunday of Great Lent we began with the Truth when we celebrated the triumph of Orthodoxy. On the Sunday of Saint Gregory Palamas we encountered the Life, i.e., we learned of the workings of grace, that our salvation consists of participating in God, both in body and soul. On the third Sunday of Great Lent, the Sunday of the Cross, we learn of the Way.
In the Cross we encounter the superabundance of God’s love, how He freely chose to save us by the Cross, though there was no necessity to compel Him to do this. In the Cross we stand face to face with the mystery of self-sacrificing, co-suffering love.
The Lord said, Whosoever will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for My sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it. (Mark 8:34-35)
Our Savior Himself first took up His Cross and was crucified for our love that we might be moved, that we might come to understand how to throw off the yoke of sin and domination by the passions, that is, by self-sacrificing love.
For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? (Mark 8:36-37)
In other words, what shall it profit a man to ceaselessly indulge himself, even if he were to “gain the whole world” and be able to fulfill all of his earthly desires these earthly delights and dissipations would not satisfy his soul and in the end would be the cause of his eternal separation from God.
Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of Me and of My words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when He cometh in the glory of His Father with the holy Angels. (Mark 8:38)
One aspect of carrying the Cross, is to confess our Savior “in spirit and in truth.” In our day, the Christians who desire to stand fast and hold the traditions which we have been taught from the Apostles (2 Thess 2:14) are marginalized and ridiculed. Mainstream “orthodoxy” has entered into an adulterous relationship with the god of ecumenism, they are ashamed to proclaim the singleness of truth that Orthodoxy stands for. As difficult as it is sometimes, we are called to stand at the Cross with our Savior, Who was rejected by His people.
On this Sunday of the Cross, let us remember that at the bare minimum in our lives, in our choice of action, we are called upon to do the right thing. It is amazing how human nature can find a way to use the most self-indulgent justifications for not doing the right thing. We all are tempted in this to one degree or another. Young healthy people are careless in keeping the fast. Through laziness one does not attend Saturday night vespers, or arrives very late on Sunday. A person chooses to ignore his responsibility to support the Church. A couple moves in together without the benefit of marriage. One can produce a long list, but the guiding principle is self-indulgence wins out over self-sacrificing love. Life is a balance, not everyone is called to great heroism, but all are called to heroism in at least the small things in life, otherwise we are not carrying the Cross.
May we all follow our Christ and find the Way, the Truth and the Life. Amen.

Subject: The so-called "Gospel of Judas"
frpanagiotes

This Pascha, the media keeping up with its annual policy, has found something else with which it can attack the faith of Christians.  The National Geographic Society is headlining its May edition with a sensationalized report on what it claims challenges one of the most firmly rooted beliefs in Christian tradition.  For the next few weeks, newspapers, magazines, television and radio will be proclaiming this newly discovered Gnostic text called The Gospel of Judas.

This manuscript of The Gospel of Judas is a fourth or fifth cnetuary copy of an earlier document produced by a Gnostic sect called the Cainites.  Gnosticism is a collective name applying to various pantheistic sects, which flourished from before the coming of our Saviour.  These pagan sects borrowed the phraseology of Christianity but otherwise had little in common with the Faith.  Their  pantheistic thought was based on the belief that this world was the creation of an evil creator-god and that the parent-gods, through a series of descending steps came into contact with humans in order to lead them to the return to the parent-god. This process was facilitated by various saviours who would set free the divine spark captured in the evil human body.

St. Irenæus of Lyons was one of the many Holy Fathers that combated the teachings of the multitude of Gnostic sects that existed at his time.  In his great work Against Heresies, he describes a Gnostic sect called the Cainites. They were related to another sect called the Ophites.  The Ophites, a name based on the Greek word for snake, worshiped the snake in the Garden of Eden because it showed Adam and Eve how to escape from the evil creator-god.  The Cainites worshiped Cain, wo killed his brother Abel and in this way freed him from the captivity of the creator-god (Against Heresies 1, 31:1).

This manuscript, which is being portrayed as a great find, portrays Judas as obeying a divine ordinance in betraying our Saviour.  The text begins by announcing that it is the secret account of the revelation that Jesus spoke in conversation with Judas Iscariot during a week, three days before he celebrated Passover.  It continues by having our Lord say that it is necessary for someone to free him finally from his human body and he preferred that this liberation be done by His closest friend, Judas.

This manuscript has a vague background but it seems that it was found in the 1970’s.  In 1983 the then owner was asking for three million dollars.  Eventually it was acquired by The National Geographic Society and today they are trying to make a profit on their investment by sensationalizing this pagan document which was known as early as the second century.

THE HOLY ORTHODOX METROPOLIS OF SEATTLE
His Eminence, Metropolitan Moses of Seattle

2006 PASCHAL ENCYCLICAL
of
His Eminence, Metropolitan Moses of Seattle

We celebrate the death of death, the destruction of Hades, the beginning of an everlasting life. And with leaps of joy we praise the Cause thereof, the only blest and most glorious God of our Fathers.

Seventh Ode, Canon of Pascha

Beloved Brethren and Children in Christ,

Christ is risen! Truly He is risen!

We hear those sweet and consoling words once more. One cannot help but think of the first time this report was heard amongst the Apostles and disciples that the Lord Jesus is risen and understand how “they believed not for joy” (Luke 24:41) at the glad tidings.

Our hearts leap with joy on this day wherein we celebrate the mind staggering truth that the Lord Jesus is risen, and He is the God of our Fathers Who hath appeared unto us in the flesh. Even the disciples and Apostles were overwhelmed at this realization as Saint Matthew records, “when they saw Him, they worshipped Him: but some did hesitate.” (Matt 28: 17)

This is the doctrine that scandalized the Jews and the Greeks thought foolishness, i.e., how could God become the Son of Man for us and not only that, be crucified and buried and then arise? All things are possible with God and the doctrine of Christianity is an abyss because it concerns the abyss of our incomprehensible God’s love for us.

In the midst of sorrow, joy has dawned forth from the tomb. No longer is there cause for mourning, for the true and everlasting Light has dawned forth from the tomb, our passage through this life is now enlightened with the light of Christ and the hope of the general resurrection. “Now are all things filled with light; Heaven and earth, and the nethermost regions of the earth. Let all creation, therefore, celebrate the arising of Christ, whereby it is established” (Third Ode, Canon of Pascha).

In the midst of death, the Source of Life and renewal arose from the tomb. Our Savior said, “I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in Me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.” (John 11:25) We celebrate the ultimate victory and our Christ calls us to be changed through the renewal of our mind from the death of sin to life in Him.  All that are joined to Christ become a royal priesthood, holy nation, a peculiar people.

In the midst of confusion the Light of Truth dawns from the tomb, for those that have eyes to see. As it is written, “In Him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.” (John 1:4-5) The present age is filled with darkness and shadow as predicted in the scriptures,  “and the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind” (Revelation 6:13). The stars, that is, the ancient sees of Orthodoxy no longer reflect the light of Christ and now teach strange doctrines, i.e., that one can be saved without Christ and apart from the Church. These new teachings that are peculiar to our era completely contradict the mind of the Church and the explanation of Saint Gregory the Theologian, “That is saved which is united to God.” (Epistle 101 to Cledonius) It is through union with the New Adam that we are healed.

During this feast of the resurrection, we must remember that for us to partake of the grace of the resurrection, wisdom is required: “And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall arise: some to everlasting life and some to reproach and everlasting shame. And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament, and out of the multitude the righteous shall shine like stars unto the ages and beyond.” (Dan. 12:2-3)

Let us rejoice in this feast of feasts and festival of festivals. Our Savior came that we might be made new. The Great High Priest, the King of Glory has offered the Supreme Sacrifice and made all things new. The ineffable love of God has been made manifest. This report of “the beginning of an everlasting life” has changed all things, as our Savior Himself said, “behold I make all things new.” (Rev 21:5)

May we all be renewed in our risen Christ.

Christ is risen!

Your fervent suppliant unto the Lord

+Metropolitan Moses
