Dear Louisiana Greens,

In case you are not already aware, I wanted to alert you to HB 776, which is under consideration in the Louisiana Legislature this session.

In summary, this bill would abolish Congressional party primaries for the Libertarian, Green, and Reform parties of Louisiana.  It would do this by creating a new category ("major recognized political parties") which would only include the Republican and Democratic parties.

You can read more about the bill and the harmful effects it could have on Louisiana's smaller political parties here.

Bayou Boogaloo Bicycle Pub Crawl!

Bayou Boogaloo Bicycle Pub Crawl
Saturday, May 23, 2009
Start at Bayou Bicycles, 3530 Toulouse Street
Meet at 8:30 a.m., depart at 9:00 a.m.
(Festival starts at 11:00 a.m.)

1. Finn McCool's, 3701 Banks Street. The legendary giant named Fionn mac Cumhaill built a bridge out of huge stones across the water connecting Ireland and Scotland, and a remnant of the Giant's Causeway (40,000 interlocking basalt columns, some as tall as 36 feet) still stands in the County Antrim in Northern Ireland.  The Mid-City pub named after this mythical figure celebrated its three-year post-Katrina re-opening on St. Patrick's Day 2009, and it is the first stop on the Bayou Boogaloo Bicycle Pub Crawl.

2. Mid-City Yacht Club, 440 S. St Patrick Street. This land-locked tavern takes its name from the high Katrina flood waters filling its immediate neighborhood.  The MCYC also derives its name from the fact that the New Basin Canal, a shipping channel that operated from the 1830's through the 1940's, ran one block from their establishment where the Pontchartrain Expressway now stands.  This bar is the proud steward of St. Patrick ball field and is the second stop on the Bayou Boogaloo Bicycle Pub Crawl.

3. Evangeline Lounge,
4501 Toulouse Street. This off-the-beaten-path neighborhood joint gets its name from the 1847 poem written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow about an Acadian girl searching for her lost love, Gabriel, set during the time of Le Grand Dérangement.  The Norfolk-Southern railroad tracks make this bar, the third stop on the Bayou Boogaloo Bicycle Pub Crawl, most easily accessible from St. Patrick Street rather than Murat Street.

4. Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club, 732 N. Broad Street. The headquarters for the notoriously raucous Mardi gras krewe that just celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2009, this meeting place in 1998 was dedicated to the memory of James Russell, one of the organization's most influential presidents who's credited with holding things together when membership dipped to just sixteen people in the 1960's.  Now 650 people strong, this philanthropic krewe supports a local grade school (Morris F.X. Jeff Elementary, named after the 1972 King), sponsors an annual scholarship fund program, has helped rebuild a nearby playground and is actively raising funds for NORD, provides Christmas gift baskets and toys for needy families and is a strong supporter of New Orleans' annual "Night Out Against Crime".  This krewe, long famous for its "Golden Nugget", is now earning recognition for its gospel choir with numerous appearances at local events and a recently released CD.  Members of this benevolent society are making a special effort to open their club's doors to welcome revelers as the fifth stop on the Bayou Boogaloo Bicycle Pub Crawl.

5. Roosevelt's Black Pearl, 1001 N. Claiborne Avenue. Serving hot plates to New Orleans residents since the 1960's, this Tremé hangout dispenses soul food and cold drinks from 8:00a.m. to 6:00p.m. every day but Wednesday.  The fifth stop on the Bayou Boogaloo Bicycle Pub Crawl is only one block from Tuba Fats Square, a tribute to the legendary sousaphone innovator [9/15/1950-1/11/2004] who helped revive New Orleans' brass band tradition bringing it to international attention.

6. Parkway Bakery and Tavern, 538 Hagan Street. The final stop on the Bayou Boogaloo Bicycle Pub Crawl has been family owned and operated since 1912 when it was built as a neighborhood bakery.  As with other shops throughout the city, this bakery began serving Po'Boys during the depression era followed by a local street car conductor strike.  This business stopped baking its own bread in the 1970's after a devastating rainwater flood destroyed its ovens, but it continued to offer Po'Boys to employees of the American Can Company and other patrons for many years.  Economic forces caused the eatery to close for over two decades, but in its resurrected form it is now famous for its slow-cooked roast beef Po'Boy that appeals to a widely diverse clientele in a historic setting.

Bayou Bicycles, which has served Mid-City's bicycle community since 1988, is providing offsite bicycle parking for festival goers this year.  Look for the Specialized Bicycles event tent that marks the bicycle parking area, and step inside the shop for a cup of coffee if you'd like.  All pub crawlers get one water bottle while supplies last!

Today the House and Government Affairs Committee struck down HB776 which would have stripped the rights of Green Party voters from conducting a Congressional Primary. The bill would have only allowed Republicans and Democrats to conduct a congressional primary. Secretary of the Green Party of Louisiana, Sean Clark, spoke before the committee.

“Bienville's Dilemma:

A Historical Geography of New Orleans, 1718-Present”

Richard Campanella is the Associate Director of the Center for Bioenvironmental Research and Assistant Research Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Tulane University. He is the foremost expert on the geography of New Orleans, and the award-winning author of Bienville’s Dilemma: A Historical Geography of New Orleans, Geographies of New Orleans : Urban Fabrics Before the Storm, New Orleans Then and Now, and Time and Place in New Orleans: Past Geographies in the Present Day.

Monday, June 8

Lance Hill

“Wind, Water, and Race:

Ethnic Group Relations in the Aftermath of Katrina”

Lance Hill is Co-founder and Executive Director of the Southern Institute for Education and Research and an expert in the field of the history of race relations and the radical right.  Dr. Hill served as the Executive Director of the Louisiana Coalition Against Racism and Nazism, the grass roots organization that led the opposition to former Klansman David Duke’s senate and gubernatorial campaigns. He is the author of The Deacons for Defense: Armed Resistance and the Civil Rights Movement.

Both lectures are free and open to the public and will begin at 7:00 p.m. in Nunemaker Auditorium in Monroe Hall on Loyola’s main campus. For further information, please call Patrick Armstrong, University Honors Program, at 504-865-2708

The Jesuit Summer Institute for Advanced Study is a joint venture of the honors programs at Jesuit colleges and universities across the United States.  Its goal is to provide students at Jesuit institutions with an opportunity for academic and cultural exploration in a setting that fosters continuing dialogue grounded in the mission of Ignatian education.  The inaugural session of the institute, hosted by Loyola University New Orleans, will focus on the city’s distinctive culture and its long history of crisis and calamity through the lenses of history, philosophy, ecology, music, literature, art and cuisine.  Twenty-eight Fellows from fifteen Jesuit colleges and universities will investigate the paradox of New Orleans: a city that has always teetered on the verge of collapse, but which is continually reborn and renewed creatively in the lives and imaginations of its inhabitants.  As a community of scholars, Fellows will participate in a wide-ranging seminar led by Loyola professors John Biguenet, award-winning author and playwright in the Department of English, and John Clark, activist and writer in the Department of Philosophy; meet experts and activists; and explore post-Katrina New Orleans.  Through this transformative immersion in a culture in crisis, Fellows will develop their ability to reflect more profoundly on issues of meaning and value and on the challenges of disaster and renewal.

Green Party

Take Action Now!

Green Parties are planning various events and actions for the national Day of Action for Single-Payer national health care (Medicare For All) on Saturday, May 30.  Click here for a list of activities.

The Day of Action is being organized by Healthcare-Now  and other groups dedicated to winning a national health care program that covers all Americans and replaces private insurance/HMO coverage. Polls show strong popular support for a national health care program that guarantees universal coverage.

Read further because we have some great ways to take action - everything from writing letters to the editor to taking actions in your own area. Here are some of the many ways you can take action now!

Get Published in the Media

Let's get the word out about Single-Payer national health care (Medicare For All)!  Let's get 50 letters to the editor published.   If you get your letter published please drop a line to scottmcclarty@....

Congress, the White House, and the mainstream media have tried to keep Single-Payer out of the discussion about health care reform. That's because the HMO, health insurance, pharmaceutical, and other corporate lobbies contribute big checks to political campaigns and run ads on TV and in newspapers. They don't want Americans to compare free-market and other corporate-based health plans with Single-Payer.

Please take a few minutes to write a letter to the editor of a newspaper, a news web site, a blog, or an e-mail discussion list in support of Single-Payer.

Your letter doesn't have to be long. Five or six sentences is a good length for a letter to a newspaper. Or if you'd prefer to write a longer essay, you can submit it as an op-ed column for publication.

Where should you send your letter? You can find e-mail and snail mail addresses for newspapers online. The newspaper will also provide guidelines for letters to the editor, such as a limit on the length. If one newspaper doesn't publish your letter, wait a few days and submit it to another newspaper. If your letter gets published, you'll be read by thousands -- maybe tens or hundreds of thousands - of readers. Even if your letter doesn't get published, forward it to friends, family, and neighbors. Forward it to your Senators and Representative in Congress.

Below is a list of talking points about Single-Payer health care that you can use in a letter. Choose which points you want to emphasize, and put them into your own words. Even better, be personal. If you have a brief story about how you or a friend or family member had a problem involving health care and health coverage, you're more likely to get published.  Don't forget to mention that you're a member of the Green Party, which supports Single-Payer. The Green Party and Green candidates accept no money from corporations.

Talking Points

‱ All health care reform meetings, hearings, and panel discussions in the White House and Congress must include Single-Payer advocates. Americans have a right to compare health care plans and to have their opinions represented.

‱ Single-Payer will cover every American regardless of employment, income, ability to pay, age, and prior medical condition. Right now, about 48 million Americans have no health coverage at all and millions more have inadequate coverage. Under Single-Payer, everyone will enjoy guaranteed quality health care, including prescriptions, and no American will face financial ruin because of illness or injury.

‱ Private HMOs and health insurance companies increase their profits by denying treatment to people with medical emergencies and by denying coverage to those they consider 'high-risk' because of existing health problems, age, low income, etc. In other words, private health insurance is designed to fail people who need health care the most. That's why we need Single-Payer.

‱ Single-Payer will allow Americans to choose their physician, health care provider, and health care facility.

‱ Single-Payer will cut national health care costs by as much as a third and reduce what working Americans pay for health coverage, because it eliminates the profit-making insurance and HMO 'middle-men.' At 3% administrative cost, Medicare (which would be made universal under Single-Payer) is highly efficient compared to the 15-30% administrative costs (profits, paperwork, CEO salaries, etc.) of for-profit insurance.

‱ Single-Payer reduces paperwork for physicians and other health professionals, one reason why thousands of MDs, other people working in the health care industry, and medical students have endorsed it.

‱ Under Single-Payer, physicians, hospitals, and other health care providers would compete to serve the public, raising the quality of health care.

‱ Single-Payer will boost the ailing US economy and provide relief for businesses, since it will cancel the high expense and burden of employer-based health care benefits.

‱ Polls show popular support for a national health care program that guarantees universal coverage (http://www.wpasinglepayer.org/PollResults.html).

‱ America has the best medical technology but poor access to medical treatment. Single-Payer will correct this scandal.

‱ The Center for Responsive Politics has documented the millions in campaign money that the insurance industry has given to Democrats and Republicans to maintain their control over health care (http://www.opensecrets.org/industries/indus.php?ind=F09), with over $46 million in contributions in 2008. Barack Obama, before he launched his bid for president, supported Single-Payer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpAyan1fXCE&feature=player_embedded).

‱ Some politicians favor an 'options' plan that would offer a public health care plan as an alternative to private coverage. They would create a multi-tier system in which those on the public plan get inferior coverage and treatment. Some of these plans also promise insurance firms and HMOs taxpayer-funded subsidies to ensure profits, or impose health coverage 'mandates.' These plans are not universal and not acceptable. Single-Payer guarantees all Americans quality care: 'Everybody in, nobody out!"

‱ Many voters are taking the Single-Payer Pledge: "I will only vote for candidates who support Single-Payer!"

Write a Letter to Your Legislator

Here is a sample letter to your legislator.  Most senators and representatives have websites that let you submit letter online. You can find your legislator(s) by clicking here and putting in your zip code.   Below is a sample letter but it is even better if you compose your own.  Cut and paste the talking points listed above to help you get started.

Dear [Representative/Senator]

As a voting American deeply concerned about health care reform, I urge you to support Single-Payer national health care.

Under a Single-Payer plan, every American will enjoy quality health care, regardless of employment, income, ability to pay, age, or prior medical condition. Single-Payer will also afford choice of health care provider.

Single-Payer will cut health care costs dramatically by replacing private for-profit insurance and HMO coverage with an expansion of Medicare to cover every American.

Please sign on to US House Bill 676 or US Senate Bill 703 as a cosponsor. Please keep Single-Payer in the public discussion of health care reform. Please support the inclusion of Single-Payer advocates in all meetings, public hearings, and panels, and roundtables, wherever health care policy is discussed.

Let's make health care more than just affordable. Let's make health care a right.

Sincerely,
NAME

Take Action Locally

Here is a sampling of actions from Greens around the country.  To see what actions are in your area go to Healthcare Now.

‱ The Green Party of Maricopa County and other Single-Payer activists in Arizona will gather at 10:00 am on May 30 in front of the office of Rep. Harry Mitchell, 7201 East Camelback Road in Scottsdale. "Unlike Representatives Ed Pastor (CD 4) and Raul Grijalva (CD 7), Harry Mitchell has not signed on as a co-sponsor of HR 676. The time has come to change our inefficient and costly healthcare system," said Maricopa Greens co-chair Angel Torres.

‱ The Maine Green Independent Party  will participate in a 'Your Feet to the Street' rally at noon on May 30 at the Maine Statehouse in Augusta. Maine Greens will join Midcoast Health Care Reform, the Maine State Nurses Association, Physicians For A National Health Program, the Maine AFL-CIO, and other Single-Payer advocates at the rally. Pat LaMarche, the Green Party's 2004 vice presidential candidate, will emcee.

‱ New York Greens will attend an 8pm vigil on May 30 at Union Square for Single Payer NYC sponsored by the Private Health Insurance Must Go! Coalition, Healthcare-NOW! and ACT-UP in honor of the thousands of people who die each year because they lack access to health care.

‱ Pennsylvania Greens are supporting and will join a demonstration from noon until 1:30 pm on May 30 at Cigna headquarters, Two Liberty Place, 16th and Chestnut Streets in Philadelphia.

‱ The Illinois Green Party has endorsed and will participate in a Single-Payer rally in Chicago at the offices of Cigna Insurance, 525 West Monroe, on Tuesday, June 2, at 4:30 pm. A coalition of Single-Payer groups is sponsoring the event.

State of Louisiana Approves $2.6 Million for Lafitte Greenway in New Orleans

BATON ROUGE, La. - The state of Louisiana has approved $2.6 million
for the Lafitte Corridor Revitalization Plan and Greenway Trail Design
and Construction project in the Treme and Mid-City neighborhoods,
allowing the New Orleans Office of Recovery and Development
Administration to access federal Community Development Block Grant
funds needed to implement the project.

The 3.1 mile greenway corridor stretching along a former shipping and
railroad canal will be anchored by a bicycle and pedestrian trail that
connects Armstrong Park with City Park via Bayou St. John and the
Wisner and Marconi bike routes. The greenway will provide open space
and recreational, educational and cultural features to enhance the
lifestyle and economic vigor of surrounding neighborhoods.

The funding comes from the Long Term Community Recovery Program, a
$700 million pool of federal CDBG money set aside by the Louisiana
Recovery Authority and Office of Community Development to help local
governments rebuild and implement long-term recovery plans.

Both the Treme and Mid-City neighborhoods were badly flooded by
Hurricane Katrina, leaving the area residents with blighted and unused
open spaces. The Lafitte Greenway project will provide an attractive
recreational and mixed-use corridor that will serve as an economic
development stimulus for the area, as well as meet alternative
transportation needs and offer some services and jobs.

The project costs nearly $3 million in total, and will include design
elements such as intersection improvements, landscaping, lighting,
signage and drainage, as well as an analysis of land use, neighborhood
access to the corridor, business clustering, economic incentives,
neighborhood stabilization and blight reduction.

In addition to $2.6 million in CDBG disaster recovery funds, another
$398,248 in state funds will be dedicated to the project from the
Louisiana Transportation Enhancements program and the Governor's
Recreational Trail program.

LRA Executive Director Paul Rainwater said, "This greenway project
will transform the inner city corridor from an industrial to a
mixed-use space that will improve the economy of the area and enhance
residents' quality of life. The investment of disaster recovery funds
into public green spaces with biking and hiking trails will help
stimulate additional recovery and rebuilding efforts in the heart of
the city."

New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin said, "The city of New Orleans seeks to
implement national best practices in our rebuilding efforts. Notably,
urban planners of today advocate mixed-use developments that
incorporate retail, residential and recreational spaces tailored to
meet the daily needs of residents. The Lafitte Greenway project
captures the essence of this approach."

The state's LTCR program supports implementation of local governments'
long-term recovery plans in the most heavily impacted communities in
the state. In 2008, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban
Development approved LRA's request to reallocate $500 million in CDBG
dollars to the program, bringing to $700 million the total amount of
long-term recovery funding available to the parishes. Funds are
distributed among the parishes through the LRA/Office of Community
Development according to a formula based on estimated housing and
infrastructure damages inflicted by hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

In total, the LRA has allocated $410,720,016 of CDBG funding to the
city of New Orleans for L TCR projects.

Created in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita in
2005, the Louisiana Recovery Authority (LRA) is the coordinating and
planning body leading the most extensive rebuilding effort in American
history. The central point for hurricane recovery in Louisiana, the
LRA works closely with the Governor's Office of Homeland Security and
Emergency Preparedness (GOHSEP) and partners with state and federal
agencies to oversee more than $20 billion worth of programs, speed the
pace of rebuilding, remove hurdles and red tape and ensure that
Louisiana recovers safer and stronger than before.

SB75 MURRAY PLANNING/ZONING - Requires voter approval of any master plan which has the force of law in Orleans Parish.(gov sig)

In November, 2008, with the broad-based support of citizen and neighborhood leaders, business and good government groups and developers, the voters of New Orleans approved a charter change to require that the city planning commission and the city council, with extensive citizen participation, prepare and adopt a comprehensive master plan with the force of law.

Now, despite that favorable vote, Sen. Ed Murray of New Orleans has introduced in the state senate proposed legislation (SB 75) to require yet another favorable vote of the citizens of New Orleans before any approved master plan for the City of New Orleans can be implemented.

Bill gives N.O. voters look at master plan

Approval or rejection would come at polls
Tuesday, June 02, 2009
By Ed Anderson
Capital bureau

BATON ROUGE -- Without debate Monday, the Senate unanimously passed a bill that would give New Orleans voters the chance to approve or reject a master plan for post-Katrina development of the city.

Senate Bill 75 by Sen. Edwin Murray, D-New Orleans, now goes to the House for debate.

The bill cleared the Senate in less than a minute with Murray briefly explaining it and pointing out that it was a local bill affecting only Orleans Parish. The measure drew no questions and passed 35-0.

http://www.legis.louisiana.gov/billdata/streamdocument.asp?did=657278

When he handled the bill in committee, Murray said that if voters reject a master plan approved by the City Council, planners and elected officials would have to regroup and make changes until they win voter approval.

Murray's bill does not specify a date for the vote.

Existing law spells out the procedure for adopting the master plan by the City Council, and mandates at least one public hearing before the council votes on the plan. Murray's bill builds on that to require a public vote.

Murray also got the Senate to pass 36-0 his Senate Bill 256 to authorize the French Quarter-Marigny Management District to impose parcel fees ranging from $185 a year on residences to an amount equal to 2.5 mills of the assessed value of the property that would be placed on large commercial sites.

The money raised would pay for a small staff and for security in the area, Murray said.

Murray amended the bill to make it effective when Gov. Bobby Jindal signs it. He also changed it to give the agency the "power and authority" to write violations, such as for traffic tickets or minor crimes, if the City Council delegates that authority.

That bill also now heads to the House for debate.

Subject: Genetically engineered trees coming to Louisiana
lobitclark
Send Email Send Email

I thought you might be interested in this alarming and potentially ecologically disastrous development.

Just last week, the USDA issued an Environmental Assessment anticipating approval of 29 new field trials of a genetically engineered Eucalyptus variety that the Arborgen company is ultimately seeking to grow in plantations throughout the southern US.  One of the proposed test sites is in Louisiana, along with 2 in Alabama, 1 in Georgia, 2 in Mississippi, 5 in S. Carolina, 8 in Texas, and 10 in Florida.  As the attached alert explains further, this represents a serious threat to southern forests, and is one of the last regulatory hurdles before the company is approved (technically, 'deregulated') for unlimited commercial growing of these trees.  GE varieties of pine and poplar are also in the pipeline.

There is a need for support in La. and other southern states for an ongoing effort to 1) oppose these field trials, and 2) get ready to oppose USDA deregulation of GE Eucalyptus, something Arborgen has already applied for. The trees are genetically engineered for several traits simultaneously: Cold tolerance, altered lignin (presumably reduced expression), reduced fertility (via barnase, an RNA-digesting enzyme), plus a kanamycin resistance marker gene.

Here’s information on how to help:

Please Forward Widely!

Dangerous Genetically Engineered (GE) Eucalyptus Trees on Fast-Track to Large-Scale Release in the U.S.

ACTION NEEDED BY 6 JULY!  Tell the USDA NO WAY to ArborGen's Eucalyptus Frankentrees

In an unprecedented move toward commercial large-scale release of GE forest trees in the United States, GE tree giant ArborGen is petitioning the U.S. government to be allowed to plant an estimated 260,000 flowering GE eucalyptus trees [1] across seven southern U.S. states on 330 acres in so-called "field trials."[2]

The mass-planting of 260,000 flowering GE eucalyptus trees is a major step toward the unregulated development of large-scale GE eucalyptus plantations in the U.S.   ArborGen has already requested permission for the commercial planting of GE cold tolerant eucalyptus clones across the U.S. South.   The government is expected to issue their decision on this later this year.

Government approval of GE eucalyptus trees will set a dangerous precedent to allow other experimental GE forest trees, including poplar and pine, that would inevitably and irreversibly contaminate native trees with destructive GE traits, devastating forest ecosystems and wildlife.  Once GE trees escape, there is no way to call them back.

The only way to stop genetic contamination of native forests is to ban the commercial release of GE trees before it is too late.

Tell the USDA that GE cold-tolerant eucalyptus plantations pose an unprecedented threat to U.S. forests and wildlife.   Tell them to reject ArborGen's request to plant more than a quarter of a million dangerous alien GE trees on nearly 30 sites across the Southern U.S.  Since these field trials are a concrete step toward unregulated commercial growing of dangerous GE eucalyptus, they must be rejected.

and

Have your organization become a STOP GE Trees Campaign partner and endorse our goal of a global ban on GE trees!  For more information about the STOP GE Trees Campaign, click here

Background:

According to ArborGen, eucalyptus is a "fast-growing hardwood tree that is a favorite of the international forest products industry"[3]  Globally, forests in tropical and subtropical regions have been decimated for the development of eucalyptus plantations, with devastating results for communities and biodiversity.  ArborGen now wants to spread this disaster to new regions with their GE cold-tolerant eucalyptus.

Some of the impacts caused by eucalyptus plantations that now threaten the U.S. include:

* Widespread destruction of native forests: Australian Eucalyptus were introduced to California in the 1850s and these invasive aliens now grow throughout the state; more than 200 species have been introduced into the U.S.  The cold-tolerance trait will allow the disaster of eucalyptus plantations to be expanded into regions that are too cold for conventional eucalyptus--including the U.S. South.

* Uncontrollable wildfires: Raging wildfires in Australia this year, made worse by drought, traveled over 60 miles an hour, devastating wildlife and killing 173 people.  The1991 Oakland, CA firestorm, exacerbated by eucalyptus, cost $1.5 billion in damages.

* Loss of fresh water: Eucalyptus trees are fast-growing "water-suckers." They require tremendous amounts of water, threatening to worsen the drought already being experienced in areas of the Southern United States

* Vast clearcutting of biodiverse forests to grow monoculture plantations of GE Eucalyptus clones;

* Silent forests: Wildlife that cannot use the Eucalyptus for habitat nor food will be lost.  Endangered species will be threatened.

* Contamination of soils and groundwater with toxic pesticides used on the plantations, often aerially sprayed;

* Worsening of climate change through the destruction of carbon-rich native forests for carbon-poor plantations.

* Eucalyptus is a known host for the deadly pathogenic fungus Cryptococcus Gattii. Originally a tropical fungus, it was recently found around Pacific Northwest Eucalyptus groves, and can kill both humans and wildlife.

NOTES:

[1] These GE eucalyptus, a hybrid of Eucalyptus grandis X Eucalyptus urophylla, are engineered to tolerate colder temperatuves, produce less of the structural polymer lignin, and digest some of their own RNA in the hope of reducing fertility (a Terminator-type genetic technology).  The permits, if granted, would also allow the GE trees to flower. Eucalyptus thrives in tropical to sub-tropical conditions, but ArborGen's cold-tolerant Eucalyptus would allow growth in the Southern United States, which experience occasional winter freezes. The states targeted for field trials are Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Texas Note: in 2007 ArborGen was given permission to allow 1.1 acres of GE eucalyptus to flower.  This was expanded to 7.6 acres with no public input.  This means ArborGen could receive permission to expand these 330 acres of field trials after the fact.

[2] The number 260,000 is based on the number of trees ArborGen reported to the USDA, which was recorded in the USDA's Environmental Assessment.

Press Release
Workers to Hold Rally for Housing and Jobs at Wednesday, July 15 HANO Board
Meeting
Workers Demand Enforcement of HUD Section 3 Guidelines Guaranteeing Jobs for Low
Income New Orleanians and for Defense of the Iberville Public Housing
Development

(New Orleans, La.). Local low income workers will hold a press conference and
rally at 9:30 AM, Wednesday, July 15, as part of their continuing campaign to
force the Housing Authority of New Orleans, and the contractors they have hired,
including Columbia Residential and McCormack, Baron and Salazar, to abide by
provisions of section 3, of the Housing and Urban Development Act of 1968.
Section 3 requires that at least 30% of all HUD-funded construction jobs go to
local low income and public housing residents, that training be provided, and
that workers are paid prevailing wages. HANO, HUD and their private, for-profit
contractors are flagrantly violating all of these provisions in the
redevelopment they are carrying out at the former C.J. Peete and St Bernard
public housing developments.
On Tuesday, July 7, over 120 low income people applied for jobs as part of an
action called by C3/Hands Off Iberville and May Day New Orleans, to get local
low income workers jobs and to draw attention to the open violation of section 3
by HANO, HUD and their contractors. At the July 15, 2009 HANO board meeting,
workers will rally outside to demand that they get jobs through enforcement of
the section 3 provisions. This message will also be carried inside’s HANO’s
board room, where workers will address Diane Johnson, head of the agency’s
undemocratic, one person board.
C3/Hands Off Iberville and May Day New Orleans will also be delivering a clear
message that we oppose any move to reduce the number of public housing apartment
at the Iberville development. We call for repairing and renovating all the
apartments, and retaining them as public housing. We will also expose the
fraudulent “Iberville Advisory Committee”, recently formed by HANO lawyer
Wayne Woods, which is a thinly veiled attempt by the agency, and their developer
friends, to legitimate the destruction of the Iberville as public housing. The
committee excludes opponents of privatization, such as C3/Hands off Iberville,
while welcoming operatives from the Downtown Development District, long time
proponents of privatization. Indeed, the DDDs CEO, Kurt Weigle, has
relentlessly pushed for Iberville’s destruction as a public housing
development. Recently Weigle notoriously touted the elimination of Iberville as
public housing, and the expulsion of the low
income black residents, as something that is “going to make people feel the
area is safer than it may be perceived to be today, and will make the area one
of the most attractive for the entire city," We repudiate this racist rant and
call for Weigle’s resignation.

things.
It's our first attempt and there may be issues with getting people
setup, etc so do bear with us.

Please do take the time to watch. It opens the door to accessibility
for those who can't attend.
It's also a way for interested non Greens to learn about the party so
do consider spreading the link.

FROM GNODC.org
Demand for information on how New Orleans is recovering four years post-Katrina has been remarkably high. Two weeks ago we were in DC briefing the Federal Coordinator for Gulf Coast Rebuilding and key White House staff, last week it was Friends of New Orleans at the Aspen Institute, and this week it'll be a congressional subcommittee field hearing at Dillard. And, of course, we've done local presentations like we always do, such as the one at Unified Nonprofits last Monday.

To keep up with popular demand, we've published a video of Allison Plyer's 10-minute briefing on the status of our recovery:

There are literally thousands of blighted properties
that need to be put back in to commerce. Currently
the only way for the New Orleans Redevelopment Authority to do that is through sherrif sales.

Please ask your councilperson and the mayor to insist
on weekly sherrif sales. We've only had 3 so far.   These

three sales were due, in large part, to the efforts of

Councilperson Stacy Head.

Please write an email asking for weekly sherrif sales

to help rid New Orleans of blight to:

Ceeon.Quiett@...,

psmith@...,

jbclarkson@...,

AFielkow@...,

shead@...,

smidura@...,

JCarter@...,

chmorrell@...,

cwlewis@...,

Ray.Nagin@...

Thank you for helping to fight blight in New Orleans!

Charlie London

http://fsjna.org

Message from Councilperson Stacy Head below:

BLIGHTED/ADJUDICATED PROPERTIES WILL JUST SIT
unless the city steps up with sheriff sales, which are
cheap and easy. But the administration has to agree
to do more of them...

As you all may be aware, NORA petitioned the La.
Supreme Court to decide that expropriations of property
and transfers to third parties were constitutional.

This decision was necessary to encourage property
title insurance companies to write title policies on
properties transferred by NORA.

Without title insurance, NORA has no ability to get
expropriated blighted properties into commerce.

Unfortunately, the Supreme Court refused to hear the case.

Therefore, at present, the ONLY way to get blighted
properties back into commerce is through sheriff sales.

I'm writing to ask if you can attend an important upcoming meeting, to show support for Morris Jeff Community School.

On Thursday, October 8th, at 4pm, a key committee of the State Board of Education (BESE) will be meeting in New Orleans for the first time ever, at the McDonogh #35 High School Auditorium, 1331 Kerlerec (map below).

At this meeting, BESE will be considering Morris Jeff Community School's application to receive a charter.

The Morris Jeff Board had its interview for the charter on Tuesday of this week, and it went extremely well. Now we need to demonstrate the incredible community support that has been behind this movement from its inception.

A Quick Update

Our first big fundraiser at Zulu on August 19th was an incredible success. We raised over $40,000, from more than 250 donors. AND we had a heck of a party.

We'll be sending out a full report in our next newsletter, with pictures and details from the event. For now, we just wanted to thank everyone who supported the event for making it such a powerful kickoff.

We hope you'll make it on Thursday, October 8th, at 4pm, to stand together for the future of top-rate, open-access public education in our community.

Yours,

Broderick Bagert

Board President, Morris Jeff Community School

Vigil for Peace:
Exorcism of Spirit of War on 8th year of war on Afghanistan
We gather near the fountain at the entrance of Audubon Park across from Loyola
and Tulane Universities at 6300 St Charles Avenue. Musicians jam starting
around 5:00, then they begin anti-Vietnam War songs of the Sixties like 'Where
Have All the Flowers Gone', 'If I had a hammer', 'I ain't gonna study war no
more' etc., joined by people using song-sheets. Anyone with an instrument may
join the musicians in this on-the-spot combo.

Sacred bell begins the ceremony at 5:30
FATHER LOUIS ARCENAUX offers words of welcome and choral prayer
CHUCK PERKINS performs poetry about post-Flood New Orleans as a call to hope
with determination to renew our lives together and as a blessing on the spirit
of renewal in the City
ROBERT DESMARAIS SULLIVAN pronounces a formal renunciation of the spirit of war
on this eighth anniversary of US attack on Afghanistan
SISTER THERESA BILLEAUD leads a pledge in the spirit of Martin Luther King to
