OrleansGreens Members, [UPDATED MARCH 10, 2001]

This message is automatically sent to the OrleansGreens list
every month. This message will be updated from time to time.
It contains important information about this list and other Green
lists.

We currently have two (2) e-mail lists for Louisiana. We also have
four (4) local lists.

EVERYONE should be on the state announcement list, LouisianaGreens.
In fact, if you are on OrleansGreens, you WILL be added to the
LouisianaGreens list sooner or later, like it or not! But don't
get upset, cuz it's for your own good. Why don't you sign
yourself up and save the moderator some trouble?

You can subscribe to these lists via the Yahoo Groups website,
or you can just send an e-mail. It's very easy -- see the
listings below! Please take a moment to make sure you are
subscribed to the correct lists.

Let me know if you have any questions.

LOCAL LISTS

There are four lists for local groups, and more will probably be
created in the future (it's free and takes about 15 minutes).
Exact list policies vary from group to group, but the general
idea is that these are for announcements of interest to LOCAL Greens.

EVERYONE on these local lists really should be subscribed to

I propose a local CC meeting at Mike Kaplan's upcoming Green Kitchen, Sunday Oct
7th, 5PM.

I have already talked with John, Mike, and Steve about this, and they seemed to
think it was a good time to meet.

This would be a good time to relax, eat some good food, talk to each other, and
make a few decisions that need to be made.

Agenda items so far:

Email me with additional items. Thanks, Jason

- Carly from Felicity Street Redevelopment and Urban Conservancy will speak
about the current campaign against the Uptown Wal-Mart, and ways the GP can get
involved

- Clarence Hunt from Citizens to Preserve Our Charter will speak about the
current campaign to preserve the city charter which limits mayor to only two
terms

- Bart will speak about a Non-Violence Workshop in New Orleans

- Steve Godfrey will have his survey available
- We will set a time/place for the next General Meeting
- we will see if we want to get some GNOGP buttons
- we will see/hear from Bart about his website concept for GNGOP
- we will hear from Steve, Daisy or DJ about the office space

The meeting is at 4:30PM Sunday, October 7th. It's also a Green Kitchen (Mike
Kaplan will deliver yet another fabulous meal!) at 235 State Street, on the
corner of State and Tchoupitoulas (Uptown).

The meeting is a bit earlier because there will be a seminar on Ghandian
Resistance at Loyola at 7PM, organized by local green John Clark.

See y'all there, and continue to forward me any items to add to the agenda.

This Sunday's meeting will feature three guest speakers and a fantastic meal by
Mike Kaplan and Pete Gollnick, as well as a few agenda items.

Sunday will be a Green Kitchen, and also a Coordinating Committee Meeting.

Mike and Pete will have the food ready to eat at 4:30PM. We can hang out and
chat until 5:30, when those interested in GP stuff will "huddle up" and take
care of some business.

SO:

4:30-5:30 Green Kitchen
5:30-7:00 GP Meeting (in another room)

The Green Kitchen isn't "over" at 5:30-- but at that time a meeting will start
in another room.

The Green Kitchen is a GP fundraiser, and Mike is asking for $4/person-- which
will be well worth it.

Hello,

Of the roughly 340 members and contacts of the GNOGP, about 220 have
evidently received the database-update surveys by e-mails. That
leaves around 120 folks (who either had e-mails bounce back or had no
e-mail on record to begin with) to contact before Sunday, so that
they can, simultaneous with the surveys, be made aware of the
important Kitchen-Meeting and E.P. Menon on Sunday, October 7.

Anyone interested in helping with even a small portion of these calls
is strongly encouraged to contact Steve Godfrey whenever possible. I
estimate, quite roughly, that each call should last about 5 minutes,
or 10 hours total.

Many Thanks

One of the guys that will be at our next meeting is Ron Nabonne from "Citizens
to Preserve our Charter."

He will be talking with us about the upcoming election to try and give Morial a
third term.

**His group need people to volunteer to be a "poll monitor" on October 24th. A
poll monitor would monitor a polling place to ensure that no illegal activity
takes place.

You don't need to volunteer all day, just part if you can.

"How can the Green Party get involved in local politics?" I've heard asked
often. THIS IS HOW!

You must be a registered voter in New Orleans to be a poll monitor. Call Ron
Nabonne @ 529-2533 and leave a message with you name + voting address if you're
interested. Let's have 10 GP volunteers at the polls on the 24th!

From: Art Carpenter <acarpntr@...>

Greens,

In Aug. the GNOGP coordinating committee suggested that local greens get
together once a month and support the living wage campaign by leafleting
and registering voters on Canal St.

On Labor Day weekend a group of us met in front of the Marriott and
began this important outreach work. We handed out hundreds of copies
of a flyer ("Vote Yourself a Pay Raise!!) and registered several new
voters. On balance, we got a very good response.

We'll continue our support for the living wage campaign this Sun., Oct.
7. We'll meet in front of the Marriott (Canal and Chartres) at 11:00am
for a couple of hours of leafleting and voter registration. We'll
especially want to reach out to workers in the hotels and tourist industry.

The vote on the living wage is set for Feb. 2--less than 4 months away.
So we don't have much time. Business and political elites will fight
hard to defeat it. It's important that we join other progressive forces
and fight equally hard for passage.

Hope to see you Sunday morning!

In solidarity,
Art

Sunday’s meeting was by any accounts an excellent one. Great food, lots of
interested people, great speakers, interesting topics and also we sorted through
some important issues for our group.

Many, many thanks to Mike Kaplan (meeting host/chef), Pete Gollnick (chef), and
Steve Godfrey for working so hard the past week to make the meeting a success.
So much happened at this meeting that the minutes are as concise as possible.

____________________________________________________
Speakers:

Anti Third Term: Ron Nabonne and Clarence Hunt spoke on behalf on their
anti-third term groups (Citrizens to Save our Charter and Citizens to Preserve
our Charter, respectively). They addressed the issues of maintaining term limits
to discourage machine politics and excessive power and gave ways for Greens to
help with the campaign [against the charter change] including poll monitoring,
election monitoring, sending out cards reminding people to vote against the
measure, and phone banking. About seven Greens signed up to be a Poll Monitor
on the election day, October 20th (Sat) and Tonya Jordan volunteered to help
send cards to our membership and contact list. Ron Nabonne: 529-2533 Clarence
Hunt: 599-5989

Uptown Wal-Mart: Karli Frankic from the Urban Conservancy discussed economic,
social and aesthetic impact of the proposed Wal-Mart uptown. She mentioned
increasing suburbanization, traffic and resident displacement as problems with
the project. She suggested getting involved with the Urban Conservancy’s
efforts to oppose the project by calling Michelle Kimball 581-7032

Agenda Items:

Treasury: Art Carpenter reported a balance of about $1000, though the money from
Sunday had not yet been counted.

Office: Steve Godfrey reported that the office will be ready no later than Nov
1st, and that there will be general cleaning Tue-Fri from 9-5 until then. Owner
Ron Fowler and assistant Neal Guidry are hoping that Greens will come out and
put in some time for the new space. Steve also suggested a Halloween fundraiser
(similar to Apocalypse Ball). Call Steve Godfrey 486-5134

WebSite: Bart announced an unofficial, prototype website for Green thought and
interactivity: green.rox.com/nuke/ (no www.)

Kingian Non-Violence Training: Bart also announced that the Greens should
sponsor a two-day nonviolence training by the King Center of Altanta. He
estimates a contribution of about $100. The trainings can hold 28 people ($30
fee per person). We might need to prepare some lunches as well. Email Bart
Everson bpeverso@...

Newsletter: Tonya announces that due to her knew full time job (mother) she
won’t be able to put together “Green Notes” newsletter as expected. She
volunteered to create a monthly Green calendar for distribution. Call Tonya

Hello,

Neil and my neighbor Daniel Winkert of the Green Project are planning
on putting in a few days of cleanup work in at the warehouse, very
soon. They're just waiting to see whom among us would be able to
help and at what times; they should be able to coordinate with
people's schedules any times between 9-5 on Tues.-Fri., MAYBE even on
Monday. Once they have whomever of us to help out, a plumber would
be scheduled to come out on whatever that day is.

As it's now October 9, we have only limited time until the October 21
meeting, so I suggest that we try to have this workday with Neil,
Daniel and the plumber take place as soon as possible, by at least
Tuesday (10/16) of next week, but preferably this week. That way the
plumbing would likely be done by 10/21 for our meeting.

So if at least two Greens besides myself contact me about being able
to participate BY THURSDAY, I think we would aim to have the workday
some time on Friday, with the people who've responded at that point.

I don't think we've had a more exciting time happen since our "post-
Nader 2000 era" than right now, and I look forward to continuing the
positive momentum, especially ushered in by a mind-bogglingly
excellent Green Kitchen/Meeting last Sunday.

One final thing: I vote to establish the next meeting at the
warehouse as yet another joint kitchen/meeting occasion, if at all
possible.

Please contact asap in regard to warehouse labor of love:

Ever'body,

Remember, as always, please return your surveys that you've received
by e-mail or other means as soon as possible, if at all possible. If
you didn't receive a survey or if you're unable to complete the
online version, I will gladly get one to you, just let me know. you
should be receiving one through the mail within a few weeks.
Completion of these surveys will go miles in helping us to get far
more organized and coherent as a strong political force to be dealt
with, so again, please submit completed forms when possible, as there
are not much more than 100 days till the February 2 ballot.

Also, tomorrow, Friday, 10/12, four of us so far will be getting our
office furnished up, getting it ready to go. We could definitely
still use some help, so definitely come out and help if at all
possible. The plan is to have people out there any times between
10am-3pm, so swing on by when possible.

A notice about Treme Fest; the new annual event gets underway again
in one of America's oldest neighborhoods, and it will surely provide
an excellent opportunity to promote the Green Party and causes that
we believe in, so come out and work with me at this important event.
I'm undecided as to which times I'd like to go out, so just call and
let me know if you'd like to go and I'll just try to coordinate with
those interested in going out. I think that the times are roughly
1pm-6pm on Saturday & Sunday, when the music will be going on.
Evidently stuff goes on Thursday and Friday also, but I'm not
presently up on the details of those days.

And PLEASE contact, or I'll possibly be contacting you, about getting
an awesome all-out, citywide campaign in advance of the February 2
ballot, where we could be getting out words about the Green Party and
the causes that we endorse and why people have reasons to appreciate
and work with us. On October 25, that would be the first of 100 days
leading up to the Feb. 2 ballot, so we need to get together quickly
to make it a success.

And as always, please volunteer your own personal input on directing
your Orleans Greens.

Many Thanks,

Steve G

Ron Nabonne'and his group will be there, and Clarence told me of some other
groups that be there, including Citizens for Change and some councilmembers.

The press conference is scheduled tentatively for Wed OCt 17th at 2PM. He would
like the GNOGP to officially endorse opposition and to be included in the press

He would like one or more people to make a statement on behalf of the GP on this

A few of us (Jason, Mike K & Joe Wagner) got a decent bit of moving

Hey Everyone,

The Halloween thing probably won't happen at this point, as Neil and
the Louisiana Himalaya Association have recently realized that there
are alcohol licensing hurdles and such to jump through if they wanted
to serve alcohol. And until better circumstances regarding insurance
at the warehouse could be established, that would make it tough to
afford most likely, since LHA was going to split benefits and costs
with us equitably, assuming that they would've been able to generate
income.

Anyway, at this point, we could either: still do something at the
warehouse, on a somewhat smaller scale, or, we may be able to set
something set up at my house by Bayou St. John, where we could
potentially have myself and my 3 neighbors in the house opening up
their homes to host an event of some sort (we also have a newly
reclaimed backyard that's pretty cool).

Greens:

The Coordinating Committee made two decisions this weekend that I wanted to
post. These decisions were made because of the urgent nature of the issues.
Criticisms are encouraged, if membership feels that the decisions were
inappropriate or something. I wasn't able to contact Pete Gollnick (yet), and
didn't contact Les Evenchick because he's no longer on the CC. Everyone I
talked with was in agreement that these were some good things to do:

1) We decided that it would be a good idea to be a part of a press release/
press conference Wed. 2PM at 201 St. Charles to publicly oppose Morial's
third-term efforts. Antionette Miller, Daisy Berbert and John Clark were all
brought up as GP spokepoeple for this event. Daisy is unable to attend, and
John doesn't want to. Antoinette is trying to change her schedule so that she
can speak. Any one else who would like to speak, please call me so I can give
you some info about the who's and the what's. If Antoinette can't speak, and no
one else volunteers, I will volunteer, although I'd rather not.

2) Antoinette's new non-profit organization, African American Genealogy
Connection, Inc. is seeking federal funding for DNA testing of African Americans
who wish to investigate thier exact lineage. To obtian such funds, AAGC needed
letters of support from various groups by today. I wrote and delvered a letter
to Antoinette today in that regard. I will post that letter to the list later
this week, and will have a copy available for the group to read at our General
meeting on Sun.

Also, here are the current agenda items:

- nominating Antionette (and anyone else!) to the Coordinating Committee
- office signage
- time/place of next meeting
- poll monitoring report
- CC report

Please email me with any additional items.

Hello,

Desperately needed are people who can help out in two major ways:

#1) PHONE CALLS FOR MEETING: There are around 100 folks who don't
have e-mail or at least functional e-mail in our database, with most
all of them having at least phone #'s. For anyone interested in
helping to maintain the awesome momentum from our last Kitchen-
Meeting by helping to call at least a few of these people about our
10/21 meeting, PLEASE let me know, and I'd be very willing and able
to provide you with the details. Ideally, these calls would be all
done by some time on Saturday to be done by that Sunday, October 21.
Also, ideally it would be great if people stepped up now (to give
enough notice-time to people) to help out, and it would be overly
appreciated.

#2) OFFICE WORKDAY II: Neil Guidry has put word out about a 2nd
office workday to take place on Friday, October 19. Right then and
there, the finishing touches on the blessed work of preparing a
toilet for our big meeting two days later would be done. I was
generously given 2 extra keys to the warehouse/office by Dan Winkert,
so I could work something out with anyone who'd like to get some
stuff done at other times (I should have an answering machine to
donate to the office, IF it works). Remember that most all of the
hard furniture moving-type work has been done now, so it's mostly
just fun that's been leftover for you to participate in.

I have no clue how much of the above stuff I can do, as Nephew #2
(with the name Mark Andrew attached) was born on October 15 at 12:02
noontime (2 minutes late according to the doctors) right outside Lake
Charles in Sulphur, LA. Therefore, my life is officially in
whirlpool mode, as I will probably be gone much of the weekend right
before the meeting to see what this new little guy has to offer in
the way of life advice and inspiration and joy. This coupled with my
ongoing, plodding, straining efforts to organize GP stuff on an
eternal basis, while simultaneously cleaning my Jason-like room.

So contact if willing and able to get stuff done,

Much Heart,
Steve

GNOGP STATEMENT ON PROPOSITION ‘A’

The Greater New Orleans Green Party enthusiastically joins this coalition today
to oppose the efforts by Marc Morial and his machine to end term limits by
changing our City Charter. The Green Party is NOT here to endorse Mr. Hunt or
any other candidate for office.

Term limits aren’t just a limitation of time in office for one particular
person. They are a limitation on how much power one person can have in a city.
They ensure that no one person can become so powerful that citizens are helpless
to participate in the democratic process. They ensure that no one person alters
our government over time to serve his or her own personal ambitions.

Powerful, multiterm mayors are no longer public servants, but political bosses.
Such mayors become increasingly able to win elections because of big financial
contributions and political patronage, rather than through open and free
democratic processes.

In this charter change campaign alone, Morial has raised $1.3 million, and still
has $140,000 to staff his people at every polling place this Saturday and to run
a blitz campaign this week in print, radio and TV. $1.3 million dollars.
Imagine the extent of his control if we let him have another four years.

The most democratic system would place greatest power in the legislative
branch--the City Council--and would establish a large council with
councilmembers representing individual neighborhoods and serving single terms,
so that as many citizens as possible can take their term representing their own
neighborhood. In a truly democratic system the exective branch--the
mayor--would carry out the will of the citizens, not dominate local politics.

We need to move in that direction, and bring power closer to the people and the
neighborhoods. We must assert our right to a vibrant, dynamic democracy, free
from autocratic control.

The Green Party stands with the people of New Orleans and urges a vote of “NO”
on Proposition A.

Two additional notes:

1. This is a general meeting, not a meeting of the coordinating
committee. While all our meetings are open to all our members, people
are especially URGED and ENCOURAGED to attend general meetings. This
is where the big decisions about where the local group is going get
made.

2. If you haven't been to the warehouse yet, you can see a map here:

Hello,

This is to let everyone know that Paulette Irons' campaign manager,
Cherlyn Robles, is scheduled to visit with us at our meeting on 10/21
to dialogue with us about what their platform for the city is all
about. Naturally, Ms. Irons' weekend was already solidly booked with
previous engagements since I waited till the last minute to invite
them to the meeting.

I've heard both that Ms. Irons is/was a Democrat, but I've also heard
she's technically independent. Either way, I'm sure that there will
be plenty opportunities at the meeting to let Ms. Robles know what we
would like to see happen in our city and what we strongly believe
that they should incorporate into their campaign issue-wise, as well
as whatever else may come up.

If we have a nice solid showing at this meeting, I believe that this
could potentially make somewhat of an impact on the Irons campaign so
that they would consider our positions on issues, especially if we
have a sizable showing of Green-type people. So, hope to see as many
people as is humanly possible at the meeting (Green-friendly folks in
particular of course) for proof to the Irons campaign that we're
strong and growing and should have attention paid to local concerns
we hold dear.

Steve
