Have him wear a rain coat at least knee length when out of the water. It
can be a cheap poncho type or a nicer fleece lined (I have one with a hood
I can loan out). This does two things. It acts as a wind breaker and reduces
evaporation. Evaporation causes cooling and loss of body heat. Removing
the wet suit as earlier suggested works for this as well but putting the suit
on and off can be a pain, too.

If you are interested in borrowing my raincoat drop me an email.

Subject: [OregonSCUBA] beginner diver tips?

My husband is starting his class tonight and will be doing his OW dives on the 12/13th...

I remember my own OW dives a little bit from 12 years ago and how miserable/cold/hypothermic I was (hole in bootie!)....but don't remember anything else beyond that.

He is doing his OW at Mikes Beach Resort and they (instructors) are making sure that the students get into warm showers immediately following a dive, to help warm up.

Is there anything I can do to help make his OW dives GREAT (or recovery from those dives)!??!

I want him to get hooked on PNW diving,  but the reality is that he may only do warm water (which is fine...some diving is better than none!)...what can I do to help improve his PNW diving experience? Hot meal after his dives? Warm tea? leave his wetsuit in the room overnight to warm up!??!

actually, as counter-intuitive as it may seem, I was always told that even though the hot water between dives FEELS better, it actually just makes you colder on the 2nd dive because it opens up your pores. I always found that the best bet was to pull the wetsuit halfway off between dives and make sure you get your "core" warm and DRY between dives. "Because nothing is as warm as dry." A nice big dive coat is good for that.

have him soak the wet suit in hot water before putting it on for second dive so that he is not putting on a cold  suit.  Or see if the shop will get him certified in a dry suit rental.

Warm water down his suit BEFORE he gets into the water. This creates a pre-heated layer and reduces the cold shock of that first bit of water coming in. Put hood and gloves into warm water prior to second dive of the day too.

Lower his expectations. It’s going to be weird. Things will feel strange and ‘not exactly right’. He will probably be a little bit cold. But he’ll get through it.

Show him pictures of a few fish/inverts to keep an eye out for. If he’s diving Mikes Beach, I’d teach him what a Plumose anemone and Striped Perch look like, as well as Dungeness and Red Rock Crab. Maybe also a Sunflower Star.

Give him a mission to find those things when he’s under there – it takes the mind off everything else sometimes!

- Janna

Happy day after Thanksgiving! Sorry for the delay in providing details for our Holiday party, but I have been on vacation in Hawaii.

The party will be on Friday, December 12, 2009 6:30 pm - ? at our house in Camas, Washington. We are combining two club parties because I had planned to have the Neptune's Minions group over on that date anyway and now there should be a good critical mass. Many of you are also involved in both clubs.

There will be lots of food, fellowship, games, gift exchange, and Karaoke for those interested. (I have an extensive Karaoke library). If you would like to show off your photos, this would also be a great time to do so, so bring them along. We have plenty of TVs to connect to for photo viewing.

Please bring a dish, something to drink, and a gift to exchange. We will follow the same format as last year for the gift exchange (around $20-$30 or so), with the order drawn and a chance to take from someone else.

Our address is 4437 NW Oregon Street, Camas, WASHINGTON 98607. Our number is 360-210-4156 in case you get lost. Directions are below.

Directions from I-205: Go northbound across the bridge to WASHINGTON and take the Highway 14 Eastbound exit (1st one after the bridge). Go east to the first exit (Fisher's landing/164th). Go left (Northbound) at the end of the exit. This will take you up a hill and then past several stores, strip malls, etc. You will go through many lights, past Mill Plain Blvd., to 1st Avenue, where there is a 76 station and AM/PM on the left, and a Texaco and a bank on the right. Take a right (Eastbound) on 1st Avenue and proceed about 4 miles. After a slight hill followed by a light, it will become Lake Road and there will be Lacamas lake down on your left. You will want to turn right (southbound) on Sierra before the road starts to go downhill. IMMEDIATELY after turning onto Sierra, you will need to turn left into the Lacamas Heights development (if you go to the stop sign, you went too far). Proceed left (Eastbound) two and a half blocks to where the street will start to curve right, uphill, and becomes Oregon Street. Our house is the big Blue house with purple trim on the right, and there is a large RV parked on the side of the house.
I think that provides most of the details, but am certain there is something I have forgotten. I would really like to get an idea of how many people will be coming, so RSVP's would be appreciated by email to john.bachofner@....

Hope to see you all there.

Please disregard the last meeting notice.
There will not be a club meeting this month. Instead we will get together for
our Christmas Party at John Bachofner's house.
John will need to provide the details for the time, date, and directions.

Would be fun but what if you were diving from shore? Tie it to a tree or put it under a rock? I think I would have too much to look at if I had to monitor another device under water....
New camera is awesome and I hardly notice how big it is when I am under water....
Chuuk/Palau here I come!
Cheers

Hello divers!

For some time now I've thought that it would be a good idea to have access
to ratings/reviews of our local dive shops, and since nothing like that
exists locally, I decided to create a section on the PNW Scuba website for
just that purpose.

http://www.pnwscuba.com/diveshopratings/index.htm

These reviews are anonymous! Since the dive community is small, I've found
that people are much more likely to relate their experiences if they are
able to remain anonymous.

I've included most of Oregon and Washington dive shops in the list. Please
rate any that you've had experiences with in both Washington and Oregon. The
more reviews, the better.

Thanks for your help!

- Janna :)

LOL!! I created something that doesn't even LOOK much like a fish. Good thing
I'm not in charge.

Thanks for passing that one along, Steve.

Has anyone done any diving around the Las Vegas area? I know about Lake Mead,
but a local told me that lately the water is so bad in there that you could get
sick! How about any dive shop recomendations around the Vegas area.
Thanks, Paul.
