We are an Orange County (CA) group of Compacters, a sub-group of The original Compact group, located at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thecompact/ and http://sfcompact.blogspot.com/.

THE AIMS OF THE COMPACT ARE:
* To go beyond recycling in trying to counteract the negative global environmental and socioeconomic impacts of disposable consumer culture and to support local businesses, farms, etc.
* To reduce clutter and waste in our homes (as in trash Compact-er).
* To simplify our lives (as in Calm-pact)

We've agreed to follow two principles:
#1 Don't buy new products of any kind (from stores, web sites, etc.)
#2 Borrow, barter, or buy used.

COMPACT GROUPS (national and sub-groups) MEMBERSHIP MANAGEMENT SUGGESTIONS:
The Compact site is full of very interesting and important tips in its "Links", "Files", and "Databases"; However, we suggest that you subscribe to the national group with your membership option as "web only". The Compact's success has made its email-update notices quite voluminous.

The Orange County Compact (OCC) site is new and consequently with limited email traffic. Right now. You may update your OCC membership options at anytime. You must register (free) as a member to participate to the postings as well as access any other resources posted on the left side of your screen.

COMPACTING SUGGESTIONS TO NEW COMPACTERS:
If you are new to the concept of recycling, bargaining hunting, donation and/or trade, we suggest that you not be impressed by the 12-month pledge mentioned in The Compact. Baby steps can only ensure your success and motivation in this new style of living. Start with a personal goal of 3 months of no Starbucks, no new shoes or other clothes if that's your weakness, no junk food or lunch sold at the local restaurant. Enroll a friend to help. Enroll 2 friends!
