Hello all

Has it really been 3 weeks since my last newsletter? It's been a
busy month for me - my volunteer transcribers have been working very
hard and it is all I can do to keep the files going to them and
working on them when they are returned to me.

You should start seeing the new records coming online starting next
week (fingers crossed!) Here's a little sneak preview list of what
is coming online in the next few months -

--Return of Emigrants Landed at the Port of Kingston Canada, their
destination, etc. 1862-1881
--Baptisms at Deerpark (Machackemeck) NY 1700s
--List of Irish Poor, 1860-1861
--Ships Passenger Lists to Galveston, Texas
--List of Crew and Passengers on Gloucester Shipwrecks

The last 3 databases have already been started and are online on
Olive Tree Genealogy. See
http://olivetreegenealogy.com/free1204.shtml and
http://olivetreegenealogy.com/free1004.shtml for links

I have also been very busy completing a book that has been 4 years
in the making!

Here's what's new in this issue:

1. New Book from Lorine
2. More Death Records online
3. Immigration Records for Boston Massachusetts

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
1. New Book from Lorine

My latest book "New Netherland Settlers: Willem Pieterse Van Slyke
aka Willem Neef - A genealogy to five generations of the
descendants of Willem Pieterse Van Slyke who settled in New
Netherland (New York) in 1660" is finally ready!

Cornelise' Antonissen Van Slyke's nephew Willem Pieterse Van Slyke
and his descendants were briefly discussed in my first book on the
Van Slyke family "The Van Slyke Family in America: A Genealogy of
Cornelis Anotnissen Van Slyke,1604- 1676 and his Mohawk wife Ots-
Toch, including the story of Jacques Hertel, 1603-1651, Father of
Ots-Toch and Interpreter to Samuel de Champlain". In the years that
followed, I realized it was time to give Willem a book of his own.

Sometimes one event leads to another serendiptious finding.Such was
the case with this book. During my four year research period on this
book, I was researching other families for a planned series on New
Netherland settlers. In-depth research on another family led me to
an unexpected revelation of a family connection - one which affects
Van Slyke and Barheit descendants.

Other mysteries were solved along the way, and I hope that Van Slyke
descendants are pleased with my findings.

For more details and a description of the new book, please
see http://olivetreegenealogy.com/nn/surnames/vslyke.shtml

I would really appreciate it if you let other Van Slyke/Slyck
cousins and friends know that the book is ready, as many of the
emails I have are outdated.

2. More Death Records online

If you are looking for death records, Brian of AncestorsAtRest.com
has the following new items:

More Cross Creek Cemetery records in Washington County,
Pennsylvania.

http://www.ancestorsatrest.com/pennsylvania.shtml
and pick Cross Creek.

Some Obituaries and Death Notices from various Detroit
newspapers at
http://www.ancestorsatrest.com/michigan.shtml

More Coffin Plates for the U.S. and Canada on line in the last week
at
http://www.ancestorsatrest.com/coffin_plates/

*~*~*~*~*~*~*

3. Immigration Records for Boston Massachusetts

My friend Steve Morse (of the Ellis Island One-Step Search Engine)
writes to tell me

"I just created some one-step tools for the Boston passenger
records from 1891 to 1943. As with the other ports, I have three
Boston tools -- one that searches for passengers, one that gives you
direct access to the manifests, and one that allows you to find ship
arrivals.

It's at http://stevemorse.org/ellis/bostfolder.html

*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I hope you enjoy these records, and remember to check my Olive Tree
Genealogy Blog for articles online to help guide you in your research

Hi everyone

It's been a busy month. VOlunteer transcribers have been busy typing
up databases for Olive Tree Genealogy, but I have only just begun to
put them online.

I also started a new mailing list for the surname BARHEIT. If you
are a descendant of this name, you might want to join the list by
sending a message
to BARHEIT-L-request@... that contains the word

subscribe

and nothing else.

Did I mention I took over the NY ORPHANGES mailing list? The list
administrator left, it needed an admin, so..... I adopted it. I hate
to see a list flounder! People can subscribe to the list in mail
mode by sending a message to NY-ORPHANAGES-L-request@...
that contains the word

	 subscribe

and nothing else.

RAMSGATE ENGLAND NEWSPAPER CLIPPINGS

I just finished putting newspaper clippings from Ramsgate Kent
England newspapers from 1908 to 1922 online on my site.

These English newspaper clippings were found in my grandmother's
papers. Her mother Sarah Jane (Stead) Simpson lived in Ramsgate Kent
England from her birth in 1862 to her death in 1952, and kept these
clippings of births, deaths, marriages and memoriams from 1907 to
1922 (with gaps).

Some are Births, Marriages and Deaths of my English ancestors. I
decided to type up all the clippings to share these genealogy
announcements with others who are searching for their English
ancestry.

Locations mentioned in these clippings include Australia, Ontario
Canada and other parts of England.

Scroll down to the link "Newspaper Clippings from Ramsgate

St. Mary's Church, Lenham Kent England

I've just uploaded 381 births, marriages and deaths taken
from the register of St Mary's Church in Lenham Kent.

http://olivetreegenealogy.com/england/lenham-births.shtml
will get you started.

These records of births, baptisms, marriages, deaths and
burials at St. Mary's Church in Lenham, Kent, England were
made by my mother in 2000. While on a visit to Lenham Kent
England, she visited St. Mary's where she abstracted 381
surname records with a connection to our family genealogy.

These are not complete records from St. Mary's, they are
only a partial transcript of vital records taken from
register books still held in the church. The 381 records
abstracted by my mother start in 1592 and end in 1891. I
hope they help someone find an ancestor.

The index to English records is at

Hi everyone

I just returned from a week in Salt Lake City doing research at the
wonderful Library there. If you ever get a chance to make that trip,
do! It's fantastic.

I wrote up 10 Tips for using the Library called "Salt Lake City,
Ready, Set, Go!" if you are interested. It's at
http://olivetreegenealogy.com/articles/slc.shtml

I had good success with one of my lines and managed to find my g-g-
grandmother's parents. I can't wait to return next year and look for
more

Still on the personal side of things, my new grandson was born April
11th - Colby is my youngest son's first child. You can have a look
at the bio of Tyler (my son) and a pic of little Colby (one day
old!) at http://olivetreegenealogy.com/tyler.shtml

I already had the fun of looking after Colby for an entire night
(I'd forgotten what it's like to get up every 3 hours!) and am
enjoying him immensely.

I hope everyone knows about Steve Morse's new one-step search engine
for Philadelphia Passenger Records (1883-1945). Steve's One-Step
Search Engines are quickly becoming the most popular genealogy
search engines online.

http://stevemorse.org/ellis/philfolder.html

To view all Steve's One-Steps, see http://stevemorse.org/

************************

Some of you may have visited http://blacksheepancestors.com/ (my
son's genealogy website, chock full of prison records and other
blacksheep data) There is now an announcement mailing list geared
just for blacksheep ancestors, where notices of new records will be
made. If you want to join (it's free) go to

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/blacksheepancestors/join

************************

I don't usually announce Ancestry.com's new sales and such, but they
have a very good deal on right now. It only lasts til May 20th so I
thought I would let you know about it, especially since it includes
the entire Immigration Database they have online.

With this deal you can save over $200.00 on the Ancestry Value
Collection. Separately these 5 databases cost $409.75. For only
$199.95 you have a one-year subscription to all of these:

  US Records Collection
  One World Tree
  US Census Collection
  United Kingdom & Ireland Collection
  Immigration Collection

For details on what these collections include, see
http://olivetreegenealogy.com/value-collection.shtml

************************

I have a lot of new databases for volunteers to transcribe to go
online on Olive Tree - some terrific new immigration databases for
the USA, some Canadian records, some English records, and more. They
will hopefully be online in the next few months so keep watching my
Monthly List of New Free Databases. The index to each month's list
is at http://olivetreegenealogy.com/freedata.shtml but I'm a little
behind in updating it.

Anyone having trouble navigating Olive Tree might want to try my
Site Map -- http://olivetreegenealogy.com/sitemap.shtml

It is a text list of what's online, with direct links to get you
there.

Good luck in your searches!

Hi Everyone

I hope you are all enjoying great weather! It's unseasonably warm
where I live and it's a treat. May was super busy and hectic and my
volunteers are working hard at several new databases.

In this issue:

* Marriage Bonds Ontario & Quebec 1779-1865
* New Jersey Naturalization Records
* Site Maps, learning how to get around my websites
* Blogs and Newsfeeds

*********************
Marriage Bonds Ontario & Quebec 1779-1865

Today I want to tell you about a new (free) database at Library &
Archives canada. Those seeking Canadian ancestors in Quebec or
Ontario will want to visit.

It is difficult to trace a marriage that took place in a Protestant
church in Quebec(Lower Canada) and Ontario (Upper Canada) before
1867.

Marriage bonds were prepared for Protestant marriages by licence.
After obtaining the bond, a licence was issued and the marriage took
place a few days later.

Library and Archives Canada holds:

2960 marriage bonds for Lower Canada (Quebec) issued between 1779
and 1858

7899 marriage bonds for Upper Canada (Ontario) issued between 1803
and 1865

A typical search reveals:

~ Name of the future husband
~ Name of the future wife
~ Their place of residence
~ Names of the sureties (people who knew the groom and would
guarantee that no legal reasons existed why the couple could not
marry)
~ Date and place where the bond was issued

These bonds are now searchable online at Library & Archives Canada at

http://www.collectionscanada.ca/022/012/index-e.html

*********************
New Jersey Naturalization Records

There are new free records online for New Jersey Supreme Court &
Burlington County Court, Clerks Office for Naturalization records
1818-1898 (P Surnames)

These are found at NaturalizationRecords.com website at
http://naturalizationrecords.com/usa/nj-naturalizations1818-
1898.shtml

*********************
Site Maps

Most of my websites have their own Site Maps to help visitors find
what they're looking for. Some of you may not know this little
trick, so here's the URLs to my Site Maps. These are no-frills,
lists of general areas of each website. For my smaller website, I
also have links to the databases. For Olive Tree Genealogy website
this isn't possible to do as there are too many (over 1,400!), but
the links to categories may be of help.

Blogs and Newsfeeds

I really want to encourage you to start using Newsfeeds. I like
Bloglines, which is a web-based reader found at
http://www.bloglines.com/

Using a NewsReader like Bloglines allows you to subscribe (for free)
to as many Genealogy or other interest Blogs as you want. Then, each
day you would go to Bloglines, check your Feeds, and read the
headlines and/or stories written for each Blog. It's like getting
dozens of newspapers at your door each morning -- but only having to
quickly read the headlines or first paragraph -- then deciding
whether or not to read more.

I subscribe to several Genealogy Blogs. Some of them are general,
others are daily Genealogy news accounts, which keeps me informed
and up to date on what's happening in the Genealogy Community. Of
course I subscribe to my own Genealogy Blogs too!

Olive Tree has its own Blog, with headlines of what's happening in
the Genealogy Community as well as tidbits about my websites. My
Blog isn't the same as this newsletter, so you might be interested
in subscribing or at least taking a look. Some events that I talk
about here in the newsletter are also mentioned in my Blog, many are
not.

To subscribe:

http://www.bloglines.com/sub/http://olivetreegenealogy.blogspot.com/a
tom.xml

To check it out and take a look:

http://olivetreegenealogy.blogspot.com/

I also subscribed to a few humor Blogs, one Antique one.. you get
the idea I'm sure. You can customize your Newsfeeds to suit your
tastes.

When you get to http://olivetreegenealogy.blogspot.com/ look at the
left hand side bar, about half-way down. You will see icons allowing
you to easily add my blog to "MyYahoo" or "MyMSN" which means you
wouldn't use Bloglines to read it, you'd use Yahoo or MSN. There are
other readers too, take a look and see what suits you best.

Other Blogs you might want to add to your newsfeed:

http://paper-trail.blogspot.com/
http://familybibles.blogspot.com/
http://ancestorsatrest.blogspot.com/

Each of those has icons making it easy for you to add to any
Newsfeed Reader you end up using.

Have fun!

LOST FACES - Old Photo Albums online

Some of you know that I have a little corner of my website
called "Lost Faces". LOST FACES is my collection of Family
Photo Albums. One of my little hobbies is going to flea
markets and garage sales. Whenever I spot one of those old
Photo Albums from the 1800s with family pictures, I have to
buy it! I can't bear the thought that the album and photos
will be lost or destroyed. Even though they aren't my
ancestors, and they can be very expensive, I can't walk away
without it.

I recently found three Civil War era brass bound photo album
in an antique store. Maybe someone can spot an ancestor! The albumsy
are:

~~ Civil War Era Photo Album of Mrs. W. D. Hanchette

Surnames include Hanchette, Bissell, Sigmund, Warren, Hirradale?,
Doolittle, Knapp, Graham, Cottrell, Harding:

Locations include: Philadelphia Pennsylvania

~~ Civil War Era Photo Album Hoover family of Pennsylvania

Surnames include: Hoover, Herr, Groff, Souders

Locations include : Lancaster Pennsylvania

~~ LEE, WILLSON, BADENOCH Family Album of Brant County, Ontario

Surnames include Lee, Willson, Badenoch, Pepper, Shaver, Muma,
Edwards, Blundy, Weaver, Clark, Lever, Green, Drake, Mannen, Bell,
Jacobs, heron, Kitchen

Locations include Brantford, London, Ingersoll (all in Ontario
Canada) and Little Falls New York

You'll find an index here

Odds 'n Ends

Anybirthday.com is offline for good. Their server used to
crash at times, but you could always get to their search
form although you couldn't do a search. Now you can't even
get to their search form -- you get a page-not-found error
instead. And when you go to their partner site,
locateme.com, you get a message saying that their domain
registration has expired.

That means that Steve Morse's one-step form which obtains
its data from anybirthday.com no longer works. But the good
news is that he has found another source for the birthday
data and created a one-step form for it. You can find that
one-step form in the Births and Deaths section of his
homepage http://stevemorse.org/

There are two links for birthday forms there -- one to the
now-defunct anybirthday.com and the other that uses this new
source.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Last but not Least!

I have a neat little spot on Olive Tree Genealogy that provides
daily updates of new genealogy data put online. I just figured out
how to do this automatically a few weeks ago and am so excited about
it I want to share it with everyone. The records are FREE and they
are updated every day. I think you'll find it helpful in your search
for miscellaneous records like family bibles, old letters, funeral
cards, and much much more.

You can see the list, and click to view the full document, on any of
my Genealogy Section pages such as Ships Passenger Lists at
http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/

Scroll down a bit to "What's New in FREE Genealogy Records" The left
side of the yellow box has free trials on Ancestry and
Genealogy.com. The right side has the free Olive Tree documents.

Bookmark the page and you can come back and check every few days to
see what new records I've added to the collection.

Enjoy!

Hello everyone

Well, summer is almost over and it has flown by! I've been super
busy (aren't we all!) with my new grandson who is now 4 months old,
my son's wedding (two weeks away) and of course, my websites.

Yesterday I put a brand new website online -- I'm really excited
about it, so please take a minute and have a look. Let me know what
you think! It's for English Genealogy and is called
AllEnglishRecords.com It's at http://allenglishrecords.com/

It might have some 'bugs' or wrinkles in it as I haven't had a lot
of time to finish checking that all the links work and all the pages
are there. Bear with me as I work on it over the next few weeks.

My idea behind this website is to gather as many English, Irish and
Scottish records as I can so those of us with English heritage can
more easily find our ancestors. I also wanted to link to all my
odds 'n ends of records on my other websites, to make sure visitors
can find them more easily. I've got English records online that I'd
forgotten about! You know you have too many websites when you can't
remember what's on them :-)

Read on for more news of new records online. Remember all records on
Olive Tree Genealogy and all my partner sites are FREE. There is no
cost to use them, so enjoy!

Just wanted to let everyone know about a free special on
Ancestry.com for September.

You can search (for free) in the 1901 UK census, so for anyone who
has ancestors from England, this is a great opportunity to find
them. To view the images you have to pay a fee but the index search
details are completely free.

To access your free search, visit

for the clickable image.

Also, you might want to take a look at LOST FACES at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/faces/

I recently found (and bought) a late 1800s, early 1900s era photo
album from Ontario. The album is in superb condition, it looks as
good as new. I couldn't resist this album especially when I saw the
names written inside

Inside are 26 photos, many have names written under them. There are
even 2 locks of long blonde hair tied with faded pink ribbon, tucked
beside one of the photos.

I'd like to see the photos go to a good home! The surnames are
MOSER, ZILER, DIETRICH and DESJARDINE.

It's a Photo Album of the Moser, Ziler family of Waterloo and
Middlesex Counties, Ontario. To read more, see
http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/faces/

Click on List of Family Photo Albums, then on the one you want to
look at.

I have another Canadian (Ontario) Civil War era album that I bought
this past weekend and it will be online today or tomorrow. Some of
the surnames of these Niagara area families include KILLMAN,
SPENCER,STOREY, DANIELS, STERNBURGH, GARNER, CARROW.

Also I have a fantastic 50-photo Civil War era album for the
HASKELL, WHITING, CARPENTER, ANGELL, THAYER families of New England.
It will be online later this week. Stay tuned!

Another immigration database has just been put online at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/ships/index.htm#montrealem

It is "Names of Emigrants from the 1845-1847 Records of James
Allison, Emigrant Agent at Montreal"

From 1823 to 1849, James Allison was a government emigrant agent at
Montreal, Quebec Canada. He was responsible for the provisioning and
transportation of destitute immigrants from Montreal to locations
mostly in Upper Canada (Ontario). There were several Emigration
Agents in Upper and Lower Canada, each was resonsible for assisting
poor immigrants in finding employment, shelter, provisions and
transportation to their final destination.

This database is an index to names (first and last) with information
on where and how to obtain full details if you find an ancestor.

This helps to fill in the challenging early years of Canadian
immigration so don't miss having a look if you have a missing
ancestor in this time period. Many immigrants arriving in Canada
were on their way to USA, as fares were generally cheaper coming
into Canada, so this database may help those looking anywhere in N.
America

Several ships with passenger names have been added to the ongoing
1809 Pennsylvania Baggage Lists at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/ships/

These baggage lists contain the names of passengers who had to pay
taxes on excess baggage. It does not contain the names of passengers
who were exempt because their luggage was not over the limit.

Hello Everyone

Here's what's new since my last newsletter. I've been
trying hard to bring one new free database online each day
in the first two weeks of December... as a sort of
Christmas present to all the visitors to my websites.

I hope you find an ancestor or two in the following new
items:

1. Irish ships to USA & Canada 1847-1858
2. Index to Special Passports 1829-1887 USA
3. Irish Emigration Lists 1833-1839
4. Pennsylvania Baggage Lists 1809

***************
1. Irish ships to USA & Canada 1847-1858

I've just added 20 new ships sailing from Ireland to USA
and Canada between 1847 and 1858. These are part of the JJ
Cooke Shipping Line Records of Irish passengers to Quebec,
St. John New Brunswick, Philadelphia Pennsylvania and New
Orleans Louisiana

The index to the online JJ Cooke ships is at
http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/jjcooke.shtml

To see the passenger names added today just look for the
text [NEW Dec. 2005] beside each new ship name

The following ships with their passengers have been added:

Envoy 1848 Ireland to Quebec
Londonerry 1850 Ireland to Quebec
Vestlinden 1853 Ireland to Quebec
Adolph Werner 1854 Ireland to Quebec
Superior 1855 Ireland to Quebec
Argentinus 1858 Ireland to Quebec

Venice 1847 Ireland to Philadelphia Pennsylvania
Garland 1848 Ireland to Philadelphia Pennsylvania
Envoy 1849 Ireland to Philadelphia Pennsylvania
Elizabeth 1858 Ireland to Philadelphia Pennsylvania

Envoy 1847 Ireland to St John, New Brunswick
Londonderry 1847 Ireland to St John, New Brunswick
Londonderry 1848 Ireland to St John, New Brunswick
Londonderry 1849 Ireland to St John, New Brunswick
British Queen 1849 Ireland to St John, New Brunswick
Mary Ann 1853 second voyage Ireland to St John, New
Brunswick
Miner 1854 Ireland to St John, New Brunswick
Elizabeth 1858 Ireland to St John, New Brunswick

Mary Ann 1852 Ireland to New Orleans Louisiana
Elizabeth 1858 Ireland to New Orleans Louisiana

The great thing about the JJ Cooke Shipping Records is that
they help fill in the missing years for Canadian
immigration.

***************
2. Index to Passports 1829-1887

Another database of names has been added to
NaturalizationRecords.com website.

Surnames H to Z (excluding L, M, N) have been added to the
existing surnames A to G in "Index to Special Passports
1829-1887" This is andIndex to names of those obtaining
passports in all states in USA

Thanks goes to Olive Tree Genealogy volunteers for their
hard work on transcribing this database.

The index to all Passport indexes online so far is at
http://naturalizationrecords.com/usa/passports.shtml

Just look for the choice "Index to Special Passports 1829-
1887"

Other passport indexes online at NaturalizationRecords.com
are:

--Register of Passport Applications 1809-1817

--Index to Special Passports 1887-1894

--Register of Passports from 14 November 1834 to 1843

***************
3. Irish Emigration Lists 1833-1839

There is a new database online at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/ships/

It is Irish Emigration Lists 1833-1839.

This is an INDEX to Irish Emigration Lists, 1833-1839,
Lists
of Emigrants Extracted from the Ordnance Survey Memoirs for
Counties Londonderry and Antrim.

These lists identify the emigrant's destination and his
place of origin in Ireland. The age, town and address, year
of emigration, and religion are given for each emigrant.
Remember, the online database is an index only but info on
how/where to get the full details for each name you are
interested in is given online

Surnames "A" start here --

http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/ships/irish1833-1839a.htm

***************
4. Pennsylvania Baggage Lists 1809

Some more Philadelphia Baggage Lists for 1809 have been
added to the ongoing project at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/ships/index.htm#paships

They include images of the actual manifest and a
transcription of the names of the passengers on board.

These lists are lists of passengers who were charged for
excess luggage on board. If your ancestor was under the
limit, his/her name will not be on these lists. It's worth
a look :-)

Hello everyone --

It seems Spring is almost here, our weather has been quite
warm, and we've had very little snow recently.

I have some interesting genealogy news for February!

To celebrate Black History Month, Ancestry's 1870 US
Federal Census database are free to search (with
registration) during February 2006. Registration only
requires your name and email address.

Ancestry.com has also opened its WW1 Draft Registration
cards in honour of Black History Month.

To unlock and search this database for free, you can use
the link found at

  http://olivetreegenealogy.com/index1.shtml

It is found under the yellow horizontal bar, near the top
of the page.

To view (and use) the full list of 13 databases that are
free for the month of February, see

http://olivetreegenealogy.com/can/ont/blacks.shtml

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Also, Steve Morse has done it again. He's created another
One-Step search engine, this time for the 1901 Canadian
Census. It's free to use and hopefully will help those
seeking their Canadian roots.

See http://www.stevemorse.org/ and scroll down the page
until you see the Canadian Census section.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Brian of AncestorsAtRest.com tells me that he now has over
400 Funeral Cards online on his website! To see if your
ancestor is found there, visit http://ancestorsatrest.com/

Funeral Cards contain the name of the deceased, usually a
birth and date date and can include some extra genealogical
information. Most of Brian's Funeral Cards also include a
photo of the card.

Brian also has over 200 coffin plates online at
http://ancestorsatrest.com

Hi everyone

This is a quick note, not a full newsletter. I just
discovered that part of the new Canadian databases online
at Ancestry include Ontario Births 1869-1907.

These are indexed, and the actual images are linked to the
indexes.

Also online are:

Ontario Marriage Index, 1858-1899

and

Ontario, Canada Deaths, 1869-1932 with links to the actual
images!

For those seeking their Canadian roots, this is wonderful
news.

To help you search these databases, you can use the links I
have put up at

http://olivetreegenealogy.com/can/ont/vs.shtml

I've also put a link for a Free Trial so you can try them
out if you want.

I've already found my missing great-great grandpa David
King in the deaths records. I've been searching for too
many years to mention, without finding him. With these
indexed records, it was easy because I was able to search
using his date of birth. That did the trick :-)

Enjoy!

Toronto, It was closed ca 1855 and the remains of those
buried there were removed to either
Mount Pleasant Cemetery or the Necropolis. It contains a
lot of valuable info about the dead such as place of birth
and cause of death. For the years 1826 to Aug 1834 and 1849
to 1853 there is a transcript and scans of the original
book.

Hi everyone

I just returned from a trip to Salt Lake City and will write more
about that this weekend. For now, I'm trying to catch up with
letting you know what is new online. There's a lot! Census records
seem to be pretty popular right now and here's what new for that
topic:

First -- Steve Morse has created a one-step form for the UK
census for all years from 1851 to 1901. It's in the
"Canadian and British Census" section of his website at

http://www.stevemorse.org/

Steve's one-Steps offer a better way to search online
databases, and you won't want to miss this new one!

**********************
Second -- Steve Morse has done it again. :-)

He's created another One-Step search engine, this time for
the 1901 Canadian Census. It's free to use and hopefully
will help those seeking their Canadian roots.

See http://www.stevemorse.org/ and scroll down the page
until you see the Canadian Census section.

For more Canadian Census records see
http://allcensusrecords.com/canada/

**********************
Third -- Library & Archives Canada has just released the 1851
Canadian census. It's searchable by location only. I have also put
up a Census Comparison chart for the various Canadian census records
found online.

It is at

http://allcensusrecords.com/canada/census-compare.shtml

I hope this is helpful. If you know of any other large
projects to put any Canadian census online, please let me
know.

There is also a USA comparison chart at
http://allcensusrecords.com/usa/census-compare.shtml

Enjoy!

Hi everyone

I thought it might be helfpul to explain a bit about
finding ships passenger lists to Canada before 1865.

I'll write up an overview for finding passenger lists after
1865, and send as another newsletter later. Some of the
URLs below have wrapped to two lines, be careful to copy
and paste BOTH lines into your web browser to reach the
sites

There are no comprehensive lists of immigrants arriving in
Canada prior to 1865. Until that year, shipping companies
were not required by the government to keep their passenger
manifests.

There are search engines to search multiple websites for
ships going to Canada at

They include most ships lists on the Internet going to
Canada and the online InGeneas databases for immigration to

There are some passenger lists archived at the NAC
(National Archives of Canada) for the time period 1817-
1831. You might also find an ancestor in correspondence of
the Secretary of State on immigration for 1817-1857. There
are lists of immigrants, mainly Irish, and entry books re
immigration, and assisted emigration to British North
America. These must be ordered offline . Details are given

Hi everyone,

Here's the companion piece to the post I sent a few days
ago about finding passenger lists before 1865. If you need
to find someone after 1865, here's some tips:

The National Archives of Canada (NAC) holds immigration
records from 1865 to 1935. Unfortunately the records
before 1925 are not indexed. To find a passenger you will
need to know an exact date of arrival.

There is no easy way to search Canadian arrival records for
the unindexed period other than reading microfilm. Ships
are on the reel, in order of arrival. You can find the
details at this URL

            http://www.archives.ca/02/020202_e.html

If you want to order filmed passenger lists (remember they
aren't indexed!), a list of NAC microfilm numbers for
passenger lists to Canada 1865-1922 can be found at

http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/filmnos_can1865.shtml

If you are patient, you will soon (?) be able to search
these unindexed years! Library and Archives Canada plans to
digitize passenger lists for 1865 to 1935 as part of their
new Moving Here, Staying Here online exhibition at
http://www.collectionscanada.ca/immigrants/index-e.html

What's Available Online in Passenger Lists

Passenger Lists 1925-1935 are indexed and online at

Home Children (1869-1930) database indexes from ships

There are search engines to search online free databases on
multiple websites for ships to Canada at

http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/search_shipscanada.shtml

The Ontario Archives has an index to the assisted
immigration registers created by the Toronto Emigrant
Office between 1865 and 1883. Over 29,000 entries have been
transcribed from the registers.

Hi everyone

Well, summer is almost half finished. I can't believe how
fast it goes! I've been pretty busy and haven't had too
much time to upload new files to Olive Tree Genealogy
sites. The list of what I have done in recent months is
found here http://olivetreegenealogy.com/freedata.shtml

I have been working on getting my antique photo album
collection indexed and online - phew, what a job.

I now have 49 albums indexed and online at LOST FACES

  http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/faces/

The complete list of family photo albums I have indexed and
put online is at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/faces/families.htm

Most of the albums I collect are from the Civil War era
(1860s). This is a very early time period for photographs -
photography did not begin in the USA until 1854. You won't
find many albums in existence before 1860, prior to that
time, it was mainly individual photographs done as
ambrotypes or daguerreotypes (I have lots of those too and
will be adding them to my online collection as I have time)

Anyway, I'm slowly but steadily working my way through my
personal collection of these antique 1860's and 1870s photo
albums. Most are of families in the USA, but a few are from
families living in Ontario Canada. There are also some
online from late 1800s, and more to follow. I hope you take
a peek to see if your ancestor's name is there.

Feel free to pass this message about Lost Faces on to
others.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Lots of visitors write and ask me about finding ships
passenger lists to America before 1820 (when lists had to
be archived). Here's a how-to article I wrote on that
topic:

Before 1820 approximately 650,000 individuals came to
America. To find your ancestor on a Passenger List before
1820 you will need to know his/her name, approximate year
of arrival and nationality. Not all passengers were
recorded before 1820. You will also need to consult
newspaper records for names of immigrants, naturalization
oaths, indenture lists, grants and other records.

Some helpful tips for searching are:

o Search for the entire family. You may find needed clues
in another family member's details.

o Search the sources thoroughly and record all details such
as neighbors, guardians, witnesses.

o Don't make your search too narrow. If you think great
great grandpa immigrated in 1846, but you can't find him,
search 10 years before and after

o Be aware of all spelling variations. Remember, spelling
was not always consistent nor standardized. Names were
often spelled phonetically. Often a recording clerk was of
a different nationality than the person providing the
information and local accents play a strong part in the
sound of a name.

o Use indexes but use them with caution! Remember that
indexes can be incomplete or incorrect.

If you have thoroughly searched the records, and have not
found anything, you may need to turn to other local records
in the USA such as Land records, Obituaries, Census, local
histories, Voting Registers, Military Records, and Church
Records. These are ways of narrowing the time frame for
your ancestor's arrival and finding out more details that
will hopefully lead to a place of origin.

Enjoy!
