V. 3 #5: New Free Databases on OTG

Hello everyone,

It's been a busy few weeks since my last newsletter, and I have lots
of new free databases for you to check out.

1. SHIPS PASSENGER LISTS
2. 1840s LETTERS ON PAST VOICES
3. GRACE CHURCH RECORDS, JAMAICA NEW YORK
4. ORPHAN ASYLUMS NEW YORK

*~*~*~*~*~*
1. SHIPS PASSENGER LISTS

I have more ships lists online for all researchers to view freely.

First is the Aller, sailing from Bremen Germany via Southhampton to
New York on 7 July 1888. It's at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/ships/allerp1.htm

This is a set of 21 images of the passenger list AND a transcript of
the names. The best of both worlds! Thanks goes to transcriber Cammie
Nussbaum for undertaking this huge task with some very difficult
names and to Elsa Vorwerk for sending me the copies of the passenger
list.

The index to other ships consisting of images of the passenger list,
is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/ships/

I have also put two ships to Canada online.

These are SS Montrose, from Liverpool arrived 19 June 1926 at
Quebec. page 67 (Sheet 23) is at

http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/ca_montrose1926part2.shtml

Second is the S. S. Melita Liverpool to Quebec carrying soldiers
dependents in 1919

http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/melita1919_part2.shtml

These Canadian ships were transcribed by Annette Fulford, who also
transcribed several other ships of this time period. They are online
and can be accessed at
http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/tocanp01.shtml

Let the page load, then scroll down to read the list of ships. Each
one is a clickable link to the names of passengers.

2. NEW LETTERS ON PAST VOICES

I have just uploaded 16 new letters on Past Voices: Letters Home, at
http://pastvoices.com/

These letters are fascinating - many include genealogical information
on family members - who married whom, what family member or friend
has died, or how many children a couple has. Often friends or
neighbours are mentioned by name, and it's a wonderful read through
to see if an ancestor is there!

They are all from the Phillip F. Schlee Collection, and have been
generously submitted to Past Voices for everyone to enjoy. Phillip
has many more letters he has submitted, and more to submit in the
days ahead, but it will take me awhile to get them all ready for
online viewing, so keep checking back!

For example here are some excerpts from a couple of the etters: "The
graves of our dear sister and of Lucy Hacker are side by side - that
of Nancy Shoue a short distance from them. "

"I noticed Cousin J. & L. Mott & E. Yarnall, Mary Brown & one of her
sons, E Davis & wife "

"I saw H. C. Whitman, Arno Voss, W. W. Sifford (a student from
Frederick Md) ..."

"I regret to inform you of the death of Dr. John N. Anthony, Maria
Mathewson's husband..."

Some letters give a fascinating glimpse of immigrant life or what it
was like on board ships

"I frequently visit the Charity Hospital where there are between 400
and 500 sick, many of them unacclimated, emigrants from almost every
part of the world & none of them have any thing like yellow fever
–
not a single has yet appeared in that institution..."

"I am now on board the Steamboat Southerner on the Alabama River on
the way from Montgomery to Mobile..." (This letter gives a wonderful
account of travelling from place to place by Steamboat in 1840

Here's the list of today's letters.

V. 3 #6: New Databases, Updated Databases, Big Move coming

Hello everyone,

Olive Tree Genealogy is moving to a new server space in the next week
or two. You may find that some pages don't display or that some links
don't work for a few days as I make this move. I hope the move will
be fast, easy and painless for everyone (including me!).

With any luck you won't notice anything happening, except the pages
should load faster once I'm on the new server.

The new server costs quite a bit more money than my old one but I am
hopeful that it will make your experience visiting my site a lot more
pleasant.

There are a few extra 'goodies' that go along with the server space
for the website and I'll tell you about those as I get them working.
Lots of hard work ahead for me, so cross your fingers that the move
goes smoothly.

Now, here's what is new since our last newsletter:

1. Indexes to Declarations of Intent for New York updated
2. Immigrants to Louisiana 1718-1724 online
3. Adopted 2 more Message Boards - German Immigrants to Canada and
French Immigrants to Canada
4. Adopted 5 towns for the Cheshire County, New Hampshire USGenWeb

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
1. Indexes to Declarations of Intent for New York updated

Volunteer transcribers are hard at work on several
databases of Indexes to Declarations of Intent for New
York. This is another free database brought to you by Olive
Tree Genealogy on its sister site NaturalizationRecords.com

Today I added several more surname pages to the existing
project online at http://naturalizationrecords.com/

A big thank you goes to volunteers Donna Jackson (finished
Books 2 & 3), Robin Tweed (working on Books 4-6), Peggy
Broughton and Dave Cazalet (working on Books 7 & 8), and
Karen Cundari (working on Books 9-12). Laura Freeman and I
are proof-reading the files as they are transcribed.

Here is what is available, with a direct URL to get to each
set of records. Please let each page load completely then
scroll down to view the names. These records are freely
available to everyone, and I hope you find an ancestor or
two :-)

2. IMMIGRANTS TO LOUSIANA 1718-1724

Thanks to volunteer Laura Freeman, I have been able to add
9 new ships to IMMIGRANTS TO LOUSIANA 1718-1724. This Olive
Tree Genealogy project consists of lists of Grantees,
private passengers, infantry officers, cadets, soldiers,
people exiled by the King, and others who sailed from ships
at La Rochelle, France, to Louisiana

I also uploaded one ships passenger list which left
Lousiana and sailed back to France. The ships (with their
passenger lists) are:

http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/1718counttoul.shtml
Count de Toulouse - La Rochelle France to Louisiana 15
Nov.1718

http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/1719philippe.shtml
Le Philippe - La Rochelle France to Louisiana 25 Jan. 1719

http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/1719stlouis.shtml
Le St. Louis (The St. Louis) - La Rochelle France to
Louisiana 21 March 1719

http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/1719marie.shtml
The Marie - La Rochelle France to Louisiana 28 May 1719

http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/1719-2brothers.shtml
Les Deux Freres (Two Brothers) - La Rochelle France to
Louisiana 19 Aug. 1719

http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/1719estress.shtml
Le Marechal d'Estrees - La Rochelle France to Lousiana 19

http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/1719dutnoalles.shtml
La Duchesse de Noailles - From Louisiana to La Rochelle
France (no date) but sometime in 1719-1720

There is a great deal of information given on these lists,
to ages, places of origin, occupation, etc. These lists are
free for all to enjoy, I hope you find an ancestor or two.
Be sure to let each page load fully then read down for your
names.

The index to Ships to Louisiana before 1820 is at
http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/tousa_la.shtml

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

3. Adopted 2 more Message Boards - German Immigrants to Canada and
French Immigrants to Canada

These message boards were being given up so I 'adopted' them and will
maintain them for queries. I now administer 28 Message Boards, these
are all free boards that Rootsweb used to host, but now are hosted by
Ancestry.com.

The Canadian Immigration Boards are found at
http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?
htx=board&r=an&p=topics.immigration.canada If you have any ancestors
who went to Canada, why not post a query there? It's free!

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

4. Adopted 5 towns for the Cheshire County, New Hampshire USGenWeb.

I hated to see these without websites to help genealogists searching
for ancestors in those areas, so I took them under my wing and have
found some nice links for databases for these locations. For the list
of towns and links to the websites I created for them, see
http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/nh/

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Well, that's it for this issue. I will let everyone know the exact
day I am moving Olive Tree Genealogy (sometime next week). Meantime,
happy ancestor hunting!

V. 3 #7: March uploads and New websites

Hi everyone,

April is half over and I have been so busy trying to get Olive Tree
packed and ready to go for its big move, that I haven't had time to
upload any new databases. Volunteer transcribers Laura, Peggy, Liz,
Karen and Georgia have been hard at work and I have quite a large
pile of new (free) databases waiting for me to get online. I will do
that as soon as I can, I think you'll like what we've got

Meantime I thought I'd just take a minute to remind you of the new
databases I uploaded in March (in case you missed any), and tell you
about a couple of new sites I think are worth visiting.

V. 3 #8: New Databases in April

Hello everyone,

I hope all the mothers on this list had a wonderful Mother's Day! For
the first time in 7 years, my son (a soldier) was free to be with me
for this special day. He arrived on Friday, planning on spending the
weekend. However, at 2 am on Sunday he was called back to base and
our plans had to be cancelled. I'll get that promised dinner from him
yet though. :-)

Now, here's what I've been working on for Olive Tree Genealogy in the
last couple of weeks:

1. Declarations of intention, 1850-1856 New York. Justices' Court
(Albany) Books 9-12.

2. Declarations of intention, 1843-1850 New York. Justices' Court
(Albany) Books 7 & 8

3. JJ Cooke Shipping Records, 1847-1871 - Ships passenger lists from
Ireland to Pennsylvania, New Orleans, Quebec and St. John New
Brunswick

4. Olive Tree Tip for Nelson Township, Halton County Ontario 1830
Assessment Records

No. 1:

I have just uploaded Surnames E, F, G, and H to the
existing database Declarations of intention, 1850-1856 New
York. Justices' Court (Albany) Books 9-12.

The database begins with Surname A at
http://naturalizationrecords.com/usa/intent1850-56a.shtml

From there, follow the links at the END of the index to "A"
names. This will take you to the other Surnames that are
online. This work is thanks to volunteer transcriber Karen
Cundari, who is busy transcribing this hard-to-read
database.

You'll notice there are many names marked as illegible or
partially illegible. The ledger books that were filmed are
faded and much of the writing is difficult if not
impossible to see.

This database is not the same one that is online for the
years 1821-1991from the Albany County Hall of Records at
http://www.AlbanyCounty.com

I have other years online for Declarations of intention. So
far I have the following uploaded on
http://NaturalizationRecords.com/

May 1832-Apr. 1837, Volumes (Books) 2 - 3. Surnames A to Z
(complete)

Apr. 1837-Apr. 1843 Volumes (Books) 4 - 6. Surnames [A][C]
(ongoing project)

Apr. 1843-May 1850 Volumes (Books) 7 - 8. Surnames [V] [W]
[Y] [Z] (ongoing project)

1850-1856 Volumes (Books) 9 - 12. Surnames [A][B Book 9][B
Book 10][B Book 11][B Book 12] [E][F][G][H] (ongoing
project)

To view any of these free records, please start at
http://naturalizationrecords.com/usa/ny_onlinedb.shtml and
follow the links.

No. 2:

No. 3: JJ Cooke Shipping Records

I've just added some new free ships passenger lists from
the JJ Cooke Shipping Records. They are 10 ships sailing
from Ireland to Pennsylvania, Quebec and St. John New
Brunswick. A big thank you goes to volunteer Laura Freeman
for transcribing these records for Olive Tree Genealogy

You can use the links below to go directly to each ship.
Let each page load completely, then scroll down to read the
names. If you use the direct links you will go straight to
the ship's passenger list. There are over 1,800 passengers
total on these 10 ships. Many lists give the passengers
ages and places of origin.

You can also start at the JJ Cooke Shipping Records index
page at http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/jjcooke.shtml
(There are ships to Louisiana there too) For those
unfamiliar with these shipping records, they cover the
years 1847-71 and are a valuable resource to fill in the
missing Canadian shipping records years.

No. 4 Olive Tree Tip for Nelson Township, Halton County 1830
Assessment Records!

This is specifically of interest to anyone looking at land records in
Ontario. Those of you searching Ontario know how scattered and spotty
pre 1840 records are for the province. It can be frustrating trying
to find what has survived and where it is accessible.

For example, the 1830 Assessement for Nelson Tp. Halton County has
columns filled in for what appear to be Concession and Lot numbers,
as well as total acres owned, how many cultivated and how many
uncultivated, but... there are no headings! There are a total of 10
columns that have no headings - very puzzling and frustrating to a
researcher

I wrote to the Ontario Archives in an effort to find out what the
columns were, and which columns were the Lot and Concession number
(of great interest to me personally and to anyone searching for
Nelson Tp. ancestors!).

Wayne Crockett, Senior Archivist at the Ontario Archives, exchanged
emails with me on this, but he could not find any notation of what
those column headings were, and they had been torn off many years ago
on all returns.

So, I began my own little investigation, and am happy to report
success! Using other land records and resources, I was able to match
up known facts with those untitled columns. I've written to Mr.
Crockett about my findings, and he's going to make some notes in the
description of the records to bring out this information. I'm very
excited about this because it helps me in my own research, and others
will now benefit too.

If your ancestors were in Nelson Township Halton County, read more
about the 1830 Assessment Returns and find out what those 10 columns
represent, at

http://olivetreegenealogy.com/can/ont/land.shtml

Enjoy! If you folks would be interested in knowing about these
records, please pass this note (or any part of it) on.

V. 3 #9: What's New in May

Hi everyone

I hope your research is going well! May has been a busy busy month
and I didn't get as many new databases online as I hoped. We had our
Victoria Day weekend in May, and I took another 3 day weekend to
visit my son at his new base.

But here's what I DID get online for everyone to enjoy:

2. Pew Registers of St. Mary's Church, Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania, from 1787-1791

In May I uploaded the start of a new database on Olive Tree
Genealogy. It is the Pew Registers of St. Mary's Church,
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from 1787-1791

St. Mary's, built in 1763, was the second Roman Catholic institution
in Philadelphia. It was the site of the first public religious
commemoration of the Declaration of Independence. Members of the
Continental Congress attended services four times from 1777 to 1781.
George Washington worshiped at St. Marys on at least two occasions.

Thanks to volunteers Glenda Meyer and Laura Freeman, the first 3
sections are complete and online. The rest will follow as volunteers
finish transcribing them and I get them ready to go online

You can start at PENNSYLVANIA GENEALOGY LINKS at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/usa_genealogy/pennsylvania.htm
and look under CHURCH RECORDS. Click on the link for "Introduction

Here is what is online and what will be coming online as it is
completed:

4. USA-wide Index to Special Passports 1887-1894

I have just uploaded the start of another new project - it is a USA-
wide Index to Special Passports 1887-1894 an Index for all states in
USA at

  http://naturalizationrecords.com/usa/passports1887-94a.shtml

--- OR --- go to

http://naturalizationrecords.com/usa/passports.shtml and
look under the Title "Online Passport Records"

These projects are possible because of the wonderful volunteers
working on them - we have volunteer transcribers Laura
Freeman, "Glitz" and Shirley Ann Hunt to thank for this set of
passport records.

I have other passport records just waiting for a volunteer or two --
if you are interested in helping to bring these free records online,
please write to me. I do ask one favor - that you not write if you
aren't seriously interested.

Be aware that the records are hand written, can be hard to read, and
typing them is WORK. :-)

But you are given training and help with every step of writing them
out and you also have a proof-reader who works with you so you aren't
alone. We're also a friendly bunch so you might find you have a new
group of volunteer friends!

If there's anyone who is really truly interested in helping out,
please do get in touch with me.

***************
Last, but not least, for those searching for ancestors who sailed to
Canada, the Ontario Archives has a wonderful new database online.

It's an index to the assisted immigration registers created by the
Toronto Emigrant Office between 1865 and 1883.

The registers are a chronological listing of those new immigrants who
were assisted by the government to travel to many different
destinations across southern Ontario. Over 29,000 entries have been
transcribed from the registers.

http://www.archives.gov.on.ca/english/db/hawke.htm

These are part of The Hawke Papers, letterbooks of Chief Emigrant
Agent Anthony B. Hawke from 1831 to 1892.

There are also passenger lists to Canada before 1865 on The
Olive Tree Genealogy.

Enjoy!

1. Irish Ships to USA 1803

I just uploaded 22 new ships to Olive Tree Genealogy pages.

These ships sailed from Ireland to America in 1803 - the ports of
arrival were in Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania,South Carolina and
Virginia

The easiest way to search for an ancestor on one of these ships is to
start at my SHIPS PASSENGER LISTS TO USA 1800-1805 index page.

http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/tousap14a.shtml

Look for the little Olive Tree buttons and click on any ship names
you are interested in.

You can also search by state of arrival, those indexes are found by
clicking on the appropriate menu choice found on all pages of my
SHIPS PASSENGER LISTS section which starts at
http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/

Let the page load, then read the menu choices - there are LOTS of
choices :-)

As always, all records on Olive Tree Genealogy are free, so enjoy!

Thanks goes to volunteers Laura Freeman and Glenda Meyer for their
hard work on this project - and stay tuned because there are still a
few more 1803 sailings to do, and all of 1804.

2. JJ Cooke Shipping Records 1854

I've just finished putting more ships online on Olive Tree Genealogy
for the year 1854 from the J & J Cooke Shipping Agents Records.

These are the Passenger Books of J & J Cooke, Shipping Agents with
sailings from Londonderry to Philadelphia Pennsylvania, Quebec, St.
John, New Brunswick and New Orleans Louisiana from 1847 to 1871

The index to the ships I have online so far from JJ Cooke Records is
at
http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/jjcooke.shtml

To go directly to the new ships, use the links below:

http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/jj_mauritius54-qu.shtml

http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/jj_maryann54-stj.shtml
Mary Ann Second Journey Ireland to St. John, New Brunwsick 1854

These lists to Canada (above) help to fill in the pre-1865 unarchived
years for Passenger Lists to Canada, so be sure to have a look if you
think your ancestors may have gone that route. Many USA destined
passengers sailed by way of a Canadian port as it was much cheaper.

I also added the following ships to Pennsylvania, from the JJ Cooke
Shipping Records:

I've just finished creating the new site and putting it online at

http://www.rootsweb.com/~onkent/

I hope it's some help to everyone searching for their Kent Co.
ancestors. If anyone knows of any other Kent Co. resources I've
missed, please let me know at otg@...

Don't miss the 309 name database I put online from the "Criminal
Assize Clerk criminal indictment files, 1853-1929"

The link is on the left side bar, about half-way down the
page.

There are also many names from the "Second Heir and Devisee
Commission Case Files". The second Heir and Devisee Commission was
responsible hearing and determining claims to land brought forward by
the heirs, devisees, or assignees of original nominees.

This database is organized by townships so either click on the link
for TOWNSHIPS or the link for LAND RECORDS to get to these names.

6. Tips For Success

The secret to successful hunting on Olive Tree Genealogy pages is to
slow down. :-)

*** 3 Steps to Finding an Ancestor ***

1. Let each page load completely BEFORE you click on a choice (link)

2. Scroll DOWN each page, take a quick look to see what is offered
BEFORE you click on a choice

3. Start at the top again. Read the page! Don't just click on the
first thing you see :-) I know how impatient and eager we all are to
find that ancestor *but* if you click too fast you may not know what
you are clicking on. S L O W down, it's a big site you can't see it
all in one day.

All databases on all my sites are F R E E. There is never a charge to
view the thousands of databases you will find on Olive Tree or my
other sites.

********************************

Well, that's about it for this newsletter. I hope you enjoy the new
databases and that you find an ancestor or two.

If you like what you find, please pass any parts of this message on
to any lists you think would be interested

Happy Hunting!

1. Lost Faces - Old Photo Albums Found & Rescued

Hi everyone

I've been busy this last week setting up a new corner of
Olive Tree Genealogy.I call it "Lost Faces -Old Photo
Albums Found & Rescued"

One of my hobbies is going to flea markets, antique fairs and garage
sales. Whenever I spot one of those old Photo Albums from
the 1800s with family pictures, I have to buy it! I can't
bear the thought that the album and photos will be lost or
destroyed. Even though they aren't my ancestors, and they
can be very expensive, I can't walk away without it.

What I'm doing with Lost Faces is putting online the list
of all the albums I have saved, along with the list of
photos and other documents (I have albums that contain
funeral cards, memorial cards, obituaries, Christmas cards,
and hand-written genealogies) and any research I've done on
the family. I've also put up some of the photos

I hope that by putting this online, descendants will find a
treasure.

http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/faces/ is the little intro to
this new corner of OTG. Read to the bottom and then choose
the "List of Family Photo Albums"

2. Huron Co. GenWeb

I am the new host of Huron County Ontario GenWeb (I guess I don't
have enough to do <g>). I don't live in Huron County but I have
ancestors from there - my Shuart and Vollick families were early
settlers. I'm always interested to correspond with anyone searching
these families.

http://www.rootsweb.com/~onhuron/ is the start of the
site.

If you need help, make sure you refer to the Site Map at

  http://www.rootsweb.com/~onhuron/site-map.htm

I've added 210 names of Huron County individuals found in the
Criminal Court records 1853-1929. See
http://www.rootsweb.com/~onhuron/court/

I've also added the names of those living in Huron County
in the Second Heir & Devisee Commission records. The second
Heir and Devisee Commission was responsible hearing and
determining claims to land. See those at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~onhuron/land/

There are other goodies to be found, be sure to have a
look. I hope you find an ancestor or two!

3. How Many Ancestors Do We Have?
© Lorine McGinnis Schulze

If we double the number of ancestors in each generation, 2 parents, 4
grandparents, and so on, we can see that by the time we are back 10
generations, we have the potential for 1024 ancestors. But is this
true? If we were to go back to the time of Charlemagne, we would find
we had the potential for 281 trillion (YES!) ancestors all living at
that one moment in history. This is statistically impossible! So
where did our ancestors go?

It is estimated that 80% of the marriages in history were between
second cousins. Why? Because the population base was smaller, people
lived in small communities and migrated within those same small
communities. The theory in genealogical research is that our family
trees are actually shaped like a diamond, not a pyramid as shown
below. Tracing back a few generations gives a wider shape. Keep going
and you find the shape narrowing, eventually, the theory holds,
converging to only a few ancestors.

4. Curiousity Corner - who is Lorine??

I had a really good response to my last newsletter's "Curiousity
Corner" and a lot of you wrote to me about it. So -- even though I
feel a bit 'funny' talking about myself, if anyone is interested, I
do have a blurb online called "About Lorine".

There's even a little weather indicator for my location which shows
you that today it is 65' F outside. Brrrr.

I've tried to include a few facts about me that might help you get to
know who runs this big website called Olive Tree Genealogy! (and
other websites...) A lot of visitors think I am part of a big
organization (I'm not), or have some kind of a 'staff' (wish I
did!!). Anyway, I hope you enjoy reading it.

Good hunting!

from a faked (spoofed) address. This email was NOT from me, it was
NOT from Olive Tree Genealogy and you should NOT open the attachment.

What we must all do is take steps to protect ourselves from these
nasty viruses and worms, and spoof emails that pretend to be from a
legitimate person.

First, in this case, you know it's not from me, as my Olive Tree
Newsletter mailings show in the "from" line as "olivetreegenealogy"

Second, I never send attachments.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

In general, you can protect yourself by making sure your virus
programs are up to date.

Bookmark this URL -- http://securityresponse.symantec.com/ so that
you can easily check to see what the latest valid threats are, and
how to recognize them.

Don't open attachments from people you don't know

Don't open attachments you aren't expecting

Realize that viruses and worms are not sent maliciously by the person
whose name is on that email. Most often they are not even infected.
This appears to be a spoofed email.

Here's a brief explanation of how spoofed email works:

A mail spoofer connects (either directly or indirectly) to the victim
mail server and begins to deliver mail normally. Once accepted by the
Victim Mail Server, the mail spoofer provides a false (or sometimes
blank ) MAIL FROM command to the mail server.

The Victim Mail Server accepts the false MAIL FROM command and
continues to accept delivery. At this point the mail spoofer provides
a destination address (or addresses) and proceeds to the DATA portion
of the email transaction

In the DATA portion of the email transaction, the spoofer provides
false FROM: information (which will be displayed in the email client
of our victim).

The spoofer may at this point continue with mail delivery as normal,
delivering any number of negative payloads to the victim(s).

Phew! It's kind of a long winded way of saying that some sleazy
spammer or virus or worm can pretend to be someone else and send out
emails as if they were from that person.

It can hit anyone and there isn't too much the person being spoofed
can do!

I can reassure you that I am not infected, my virus scanner runs once
a day on my whole computer, and my email is protected on every
incoming email.

I am sorry for the confusion and worry this might have caused, but I
hope I've reassured you that the message wasn't from me, and I'm not
infected with any viruses or worms.

Remember, I don't send attachments as part of Olive Tree Newsletter,
so if you get one, even though it may LOOK like it came from me, it
didn't.

My regular newsletter will be out sometime next week, hope everyone
has great success in hunting for ancestors in the meantime

V. 3 #12: Salt Lake City Research

****************
Hi everyone,

I was lucky enough to spend 10 days in Salt Lake City, and had a
week of research time in their wonderful Library.

1. Salt Lake City
2. The Paper Trail - Old Documents online
3. Lost Faces - Old Photo Albums Found & Rescued - Update
4. This 'n That

****************
1. Salt Lake City

While in SLC, I gathered more ships passenger lists for Olive Tree
Genealogy pages, plus some miscellaneous databases for all of you to
enjoy. I'll be getting those out to the Olive Tree Volunteers as
quickly as possible, so watch for them to go online over the next 6
months. The passenger lists I brought back with me should be helpful
in your research because they fill some of the gaps of missing or
unindexed years:

-Passenger Lists to Philadelphia Pennsylvania starting 1809
-Passenger Lists to Boston Massachusetts starting 1820
-Passenger Lists to New Orleans, Louisiana starting 1821
-Passenger Lists to Baltimore Maryland starting 1837

For those who haven't had the thrill of a vist to SLC Family History
Library, you might want to read my tips and advice in "Salt Lake
City Library: Ready, Set, Go!" at
http://olivetreegenealogy.com/articles/slc.shtml

On my personal research, I had tremendous luck and managed to find
my illegitimate great-great-grandmother's father, grandparents and
great-grandparents! This is an English line from Lenham Kent and the
wealth of available English resources amazed me.

****************
2. The Paper Trail - Old Documents online

Another new corner of Olive Tree Genealogy! This little corner of
Olive Tree Genealogy is for miscellaneous old papers and documents.
That's why I call it The Paper Trail.

It's fascinating to find an old document that describes how many
pairs of shoes an ancestor bought for his children, or a receipt
from a funeral home for grave-digging and a hearse and pall. We all
search for census records, birth certificates, marriage records, and
death certificates.

Finding the documents I have here is tricky - where on earth do you
start to look for them?? That's always been a problem, and that's
why The Paper Trail hopes to build a massive collection of such
documents.

http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/usa_genealogy/paper/ is the start,
please check it out and see if I have anything yet on your
ancestors.

Just as an example, here is what I have so far on families from New
York at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/usa_genealogy/ny/ :

Document dated 1857 from the New York Temporance Society to employ
Rev. E. W. Jackson

Complaint Rip Van Dam vs Peter White of New York City, 1700s

John Nicholls and Joseph Smith as Creditors, Jamaica, Queens New
York 1723

1828 Receipt to John Wilderstein of Herkimer New York

Indenture against Phineas Bennett Ithaca New York 1833

Civil War 1863 Enlistment paper for John Tierman New York

Land Grant in Marquette Michigan to Thomas Bond and Daniel Gay of
New York City 1865

Estate of Richard Cornwall, New York 1726

****************
3. Lost Faces - Old Photo Albums Found & Rescued - Update

I am really pleased to say that two of my albums online have gone to
good homes. The Skinner and Neilson Albums were found by descendants
and the photos have been mailed to them. Have you checked to see if
your family photos have been found yet? I just bought two more and
will have those online as soon as I can. One of my new albums is a
real treasure, it's the CLARKE family of Rhode Island, New York and
Wisconsin, and is a Civil War era album - a wonderful find!

http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/faces/ is the intro to this new corner
of OTG. Read to the bottom and then choose from the "List of Family
Photo Albums"

****************
4. This 'n That

I just set up the new FTM 2005 and am so impressed with it that I
wanted everyone to know about it. The entire look and feel is
entirely changed - for the better. It's easier to enter family inf.
It has a great layout where you can see 10 children plus birth and
death dates and locations -- without scrolling down! Parents are now
side by side and it's easy to see who their parents are without
mousing over their names. In an interesting twist, Ancestry.com has
added a silent search feature which searches on your ancestors'
names in the background while you are working in FTM. When you look
at a chart, you see a little icon beside each name where more
information was found in their databases. I've been checking some of
my names and was pleased to find positive results. It saved me hours
of hunting, and is easy to use.

If you aren't an Ancestry subscriber, you can take a Free Trial to
view the search results - how great is that? Anyway, I love the new
FTM although I did change the new colors back to the standard
yellow - I missed that look. Best of all, you can still use FTM 2005
without bothering with the behind-the-scenes search capablities, and
I really liked that option. It's the best of both worlds.

If you are interested see
http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ftm2005.shtml for more details and a
link to purchase it. If you order it online through the link I have
there, Olive Tree will get a small amount of each purchase, and that
goes towards more databases such as the ships passenger lists I just
got in Salt Lake. Don't use the phone number given on the order page
though, or Olive Tree doesn't get a dime.

I'm really happy with mine and have spent more time playing around
with it than I should :-)

V. 3 #13: Pennsylvania Baggage Lists

*************************************************

Hi everyone,

This is a special announcement, I was too excited about
this new project to wait til my next scheduled newsletter

I have just completed indexing 24 passenger lists from the
  Pennsylvania Baggage Lists of 1809.

These contain the names of passengers who had to pay taxes
on excess baggage. It does not contain the names of
passengers who were exempt because their luggage was not
over the limit.

I decided to index all names, not just passenger names, but
also the names of those shipping luggage or goods, and the
names of those where the goods were being shipped.

It's a lot of work, some of the lists are very hard to
read, but it's also fun, and what a great feeling to get
these first 24 lists done and online for everyone to enjoy.

More will follow as I have time, or as volunteers are
found to help.

Here is the list of ships I put online yesterday. All
sailed to Philadelphia Pennsylvania

1809 Jan 5 Brig Lamprey from Kingston Jamaica

1809 Jan 5 Schooner Wanton from Jamaica

1809 Jan. 30 Schooner Swift from Puerto Rico

1809 Mar. 8 Ship Cordelia from Martinique

1809 Mar. 11 Ship Union from Plymouth & Lorient

1809 Apr. 11 Swedish Ship Abo from St. Bartholomews &
Turks

Island 1809 Apr. 18 Brig Jean from Liverpool

1809 Apr.18 Ship Mary from London

1809 Apr. 20 Swedish Schooner Maria from St. Thomas

1809 Apr. 22 Ship Live Oak from Liverpool

1809 Apr. 24 Brig Lovely Lass from Batavia

1809 Apr. 29 Ship Ann & Hannah from Turks Island

1809 Apr. 20 Brig Gustaf Ekerman from St. Bartholomew

1809 May 2 Ship Edward & Charles from London

1809 May 2 Schooner George & Susan from Nassau

1809 May 2 Ship Recovery from Liverpool

1809 May 3 Ship Diana from Liverpool

1809 May 8 Brig Reindeer from Havana

1809 May 9 Brig Palafos from Havana

1809 May 9 Schooner Ranger from Puerto Rico

1809 May 9 Schooner Five Sisters from Puerto Rico

1809 May 10 Schooner Blanche from St. Bartholomew

1809 May 10 Brig Ann from Liverpool

Most of the ships also have the image of the manifest
online too. I will be putting them all online as I have
time, so if the one you want isn't there, just come back
and check in a few days.

You can get to the lists several ways - by going directly
to the Baggage Lists for PA at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/ships/#paships

or by starting at the index to Ships to USA 1805-1810 at
http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/tousap14b.shtml

by going to Ships to PA 1800-present at
http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/tousa_pa1800.shtml

This is another project of Olive Tree Genealogy to fill in
the gaps, and one that I hope to carry on to 1820, which
is
when full passenger lists began to be archived and are
available to us

Enjoy! All data on Olive Tree is free for everyone to use,
so if you like this new project, please spread the word to
other researchers.

V. 3 #13: Updates of new databases

*********************

Hi everyone,

I have 4 new free sets of records online for all to use. The
wonderful Olive Tree Genealogy volunteers make this possible,
without them I couldn't get all these records transcribed. Here's
what new since last newsletter:

1. Index to Special Passport Applications, 1887-1894
2. Pennsylvania Baggage Lists 1809
3. Poor from England to Ireland 1860s
4. New York Declarations of Intent
5. Olive Tree Genealogy move

*********************
1.Index to Special Passport Applications, 1887-1894

This Olive Tree Genealogy project is an Index to Special
Passport Applications issued in the USA between 1887 and
1894.

Special passports were issued to US diplomatic and
consular officers, military attaches, secretaries of
legations, and other government officers and their
families.

I've just added surnames beginning with D, E, F, I, J, K,
L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T, U and V to the existing
database. Thanks goes to Peggy Broughton and "Glitz" for
their hard work in transcribing these records, and to Laura
Freeman for proof-reading them.

Remember this is an index to the records -- full details
are given online for obtaining the full record for any
person you find of interest.

The companion project is Index to Special Passport
Applications 1829 - 1887 which is partially transcribed and
online at
http://naturalizationrecords.com/usa/passports1829-87a.shtml

or 1887-1894 at

5. Olive Tree Genealogy move

I moved Olive Tree from one host server to another a few weeks ago,
and all went well. Nothing was lost in the move and so far all links
seem to be working fine. If you notice anything wrong as you browse
the site, please drop me a line so I can take a look.

Thanks and enjoy the new databases I have put online for you!

V. 3 #16: This & That
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Hi everyone

I hope you have all had a chance to check out the databases that
Ancestry.com opened for ships passenger lists. These are FREE, no
credit cards required, nothing to buy. I found an ancestor myself,
what a thrill to see the actual page of the manifest with his name
on it.

** FREE Database Number One is the very popular New York
Ships Passenger Lists 1851-1891.

** FREE Database Number Two is the Philadelphia Passenger &
Immigration Lists 1800-1850

The URL to get your free use of these passenger lists until Oct. 29
is at

http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ancestry/free.shtml

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

I've also got a few URLs for you of websites I think are worth
noting.

First is Ancestors At Rest at http://ancestorsatrest.com/

This site has Coffin Plates, Funeral Cards, Cemetery Records,
Cenotaph Records, Death Cards, Wills, Church Records, Family Bibles,
Vital Records and more. You will also find links to Death Records
and information on where to find records that are not online.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Second noteworthy site is Steve Morse's One-Step Search Engines. He
not only has Ellis Island he now has Castle Garden online for
immigration records. Oh, and he also has a one-step search engine
for Census Records too.

http://stevemorse.org/

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Last but not least, Olive Tree Genealogy now has its own Blog.

What's a Blog? Here's one definition:

A blog is basically a journal that is available on the web. The
activity of updating a blog is "blogging" and someone who keeps a
blog is a "blogger."

You can read Olive Tree's Blog at
http://olivetreegenealogy.blogspot.com

I hope it will be a way for visitors to more easily find the free
databases I have online. The Blog has short "articles" that tell you
how to find information on your ancestors -- both offline and
online.

Olive Tree Blog also talks about current hot topics in genealogy -
like One World Tree - is it a rip off or is it a serious and valid
contribution to genealogy? (Click on the topic "One World Tree - The
Real Story")

Another topic you can click on is "I Found My Great Great
Grandfather Online -- Now What!!???" " which explains how to figure
out if the info you found on a webpage is trustworthy.

I hope you like the Blog!

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Olive Tree Volunteers are also hard at work on the Irish Poor Lists,
NY Naturalization Records, Ships Passenger Lists to Galveston Texas,
JJ Cooke Shipping Records (Irish Ships to USA & Canada) and
miscellaneous ships passenger lists to USA

The start of some of these sets of free records is already online.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Hi everyone,

Well, the BAD news is that the free access to NY ships
passenger lists 1851-1891 and PA ships passenger lists 1800-
1850 is over. Ancestry.com was very generous to allow Olive
Tree Genealogy guests to use these databases at no charge
from Oct. 12-29. I hope everyone had a chance to try, and
that you all found some ancestors.

The GOOD news is that you can still check these lists out
if you are an Ancestry subscriber, or by taking a Free
Trial! I've left the links up at
http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ancestry/free.shtml for
anyone that still wants to have a look.

Here's the list of new records on my sites since my last
newsletter. As always ALL records on Olive Tree and its
family of websites are free

1. Irish ships arriving 1803-1804 to USA

2. Ships Passenger Lists at Galveston Texas 1846 -1871

3. Using Search Engines to Find Ancestors

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
1. Irish ships arriving 1803-1804 to USA

On the 28th, I uploaded 19 new ships from Ireland arriving
in USA 1803 and 1804. This brings a total of 50 Irish ships
now online for those 2 years

The ports of arrival include New York, Philadelphia
Pennsylvania, Boston Massachusetts, & Baltimore Maryland

You can see the full list of Irish ships arriving 1803-1804
at SHIPS FROM IRELAND at

http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/fromirep02.shtml

Let the page load. Scroll down and click on any that
interest you. Olive Tree Genealogy free ships passenger
lists are marked with the little Olive Tree button.

Have fun and I hope you find an Irish ancestor! Thanks goes

2. Ships Passenger Lists arriving at Galveston Texas
between 1846 and 1871

On 23 Oct. I started putting an index to names of
passengers on Ships Passenger Lists arriving at Galveston
Texas between 1846 and 1871 online

http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/ships/texas-ships-a.htm is the
start of this huge project.

Thanks to volunteers Glenda Meyer and Laura Freeman for
their help in transcribing these names. This is an ongoing
project, please check back often to see new surnames as
they are added.

3. Using Search Engines to Find Ancestors

When using search engines, don't limit your searches too
much. If you get zero results, loosen the search
parameters.

**** First tip - Use wildcards to allow for alternate
spellings. Instead of BILKEY, try BIL* (the * is a
wildcard for any letters after BIL)

Don't put in the first name. Don't put in middle initials.
Think about how the name might have been given, and
recorded at the time. Richard W. Bilkey might have said his
name was R. Bilkey. Perhaps he gave his full first name but
not his middle initial. Maybe the person recording it put
Rich'd for Richard. Maybe they spelled BILKEY as Bilkee or
Beelkey or ....

Be creative, try variant spellings and use wildcards.

**** Second tip - for this particular search below, you
want to go to
http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ancestry/free.shtml and
try the spellings and wildcard feature above. Then to see a
list of ships from Liverpool to New York in April 1865 do
this:

On the Ancestry search box, DON'T put a first or last
name.
Put the year of arrival as 1865 to 1865.

In the keyword field put 'apr' (only put 3 letters because
if you look at results you get you will see that this is
how all the months are indexed - as 3 letter months. So if
you put "april' you'll get zero results)

For Port of departure put Liverpool.

Then hit SEARCH and see what comes up. You'll get a lot of
results and you can see that there are many ships - Etna,
Kangaroo, Helvetia and so on

V. 3 #18: Orphan Records & New Sites Online

***********************************

Hi everyone

As early as 1653, New York City (formerly called New
Amsterdam) recognized that it needed to care for the city's
minor children, widows, and orphans.

By the 19th century the influx of immigrants found many
unable to work and thus unable to feed their children.
Women died during childbirth leaving a number of uncared
for children. Many women also had illegitimate children
that they could not provide for. Husbands died, living
behind widows with large families. Some parents were
addicted to alcohol or committed crimes and wound up in
prison.

Many institutions were founded in New York City to care for
destitute children of immigrants from Ireland and Russia,
Germany and other eastern European countries.

I've just added more Orphan Records to my Orphanges &
Almshouse Project at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/orphans/

The new records added today lists over 2,245 names of orphaned
or abandoned children

The Orphanages added are:

Roman Catholic Orphan Asylum, Manhattan New York 1900

Hebrew Orphan Asylum, Amsterdam Avenue & 137 Street,
Manhattan New York 1900

Hebrew Sheltering Guardian Society of New York, Manhattan
New York 1900

Orphan Asylum Society Manhattan New York 1900

Albany Orphan Asylum, Albany NY 1900

Society for Relief of Half-Orphans & Destitute Children 1900,
Manhattan New York

I've also added links to other Orphan records I already had
online but had forgotten about! (You know you have a huge
website when you forget what's on it).

These links are for Almshouse children (orphans) sent to
New Netherland (New York) from Amsterdam Holland on the
ship De Waegh (The Weigh-House), August 1655 and Palatine
(German) Orphaned Children Apprenticed by Gov. Hunter in
New York 1710-1714

If you know of anyone or any list that would be interested
in these new records, please pass this message on to them

***********************************

I want to announce a new site - BlackSheep Ancestors at
http://blacksheepancestors.com/ This site belongs to my son and
it's his first attempt at a website. I think he's done an amazing
job for his first time! (yes, okay he had a little help from Mom)

This is the largest Directory of Links for Prison & Convict Records,
Court Records, Executions, Famous Outlaws, Bandits & Criminals on
the 'net

I think you will enjoy looking through it. It's in beginning stages,
he just went live with it today, so there may be a few starting
glitches. He is excited about finding more records to help find
those elusive infamous ancestors, and has some great projects in
mind. Keep watching this site as it grows and expands with
searchable databases

***********************************

Last but not least, Ancestors At Rest at http://ancestorsatrest.com
is one of my favourite websites. Brian has collected coffin plates,
funeral cards and tons of other death records to provide an
intriquing collection that is free to search.

Also check out his companion site, Family Bibles at

Have a fun time finding those brick wall ancestors!

V. 3 #18: Blogs! What The Heck are They?
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Hi Everyone

Well, Christmas is almost on us, and for those who celebrate this
Holiday season, it's a busy time of year.

My soldier son is home on leave for 3 weeks, and I plan to enjoy
some time with him. Today we are going to do some last-minute
shopping, that should be fun. I haven't shopped with him since he
was a little guy! Speaking of my soldier son, please check out his
site, his very first attempt at a website, at
http://blacksheepancestors.com/ I think he did a fantastic job!

My grandchildren arrive Dec. 27th (ages 3, 4 and 6) and I'm still
working out the logistics of cooking for everyone.

I hope all of you are enjoying family and friends and not getting
too caught up in the hustle and bustle.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

And now I want to let you know about Blogs. I'm having a lot of fun
with them, and have made a list of Genealogy Blogs I think are
worthwhile visiting. The list includes my own, of course! Basically
a Blog is a Journal, a daily or weekly posting of items of interest
(in my case it's all genealogy naturally)

My main blog is at

http://olivetreegenealogy.blogspot.com It has Tips & Suggestions
for research, plus researcher Questions which I answer. I hope you
find it helpful.

Olive Tree blog also has a newsfeed, so if you have a reader, you
can view the feed at

http://olivetreegenealogy.blogspot.com/atom.xml

If you don't have a reader, or don't want to be bothered to download
one, check out Bloglines.com where you can register for free, and
read these blog feeds in your web browser. The feeds are summaries
of each article or post put on the Blog you have added to your
reader - to read the complete article or post, you just click on the
link from your reader.

To sign up for my Blog Feed, use this URL below:

http://www.bloglines.com/sub/http://olivetreegenealogy.blogspot.com/a
tom.xml

If you can't click on this link, go to
http://olivetreegenealogy.blogspot.com/ and look in the left side
bar, half way down the page -- you will see a little icon "Sign up"
with a link

What this does is allow you to add different blogs to your reader,
kind of like getting several newspapers delivered to your door each
day. Instead of going out to a different newsbox to get each paper,
you go to one spot to get them all. The feed gives you the
highlights for each blog when new items are added.

Some of my other Blogs are

The Paper Trail - Eclectic mix of old documents - you may just find
an ancestor's will, land record or general store receipt here!
http://paper-trail.blogspot.com/

Past Voices - Letters, letters and more letters! Letters from Civil
War soldiers, from wives to husbands, sons to mothers, sisters to
sisters... This blog contains poignant old letters full of genealogy
tidbits.
http://pastvoices.blogspot.com/

After Christmas I'll have more time to add all the wonderful
databases that my hard-working volunteers have been transcribing
over the past 6 weeks. There are many goodies waiting for me to code
and put online and I know you're going to be as excited as I am to
see them. As always, they will be free for all to use and enjoy.

For now, enjoy your holidays, and see you in 2005!

Hi Everyone

I hope the holidays were terrific for all. I have just
finished putting online a set of records for all to enjoy.

It is a list of vessels sailing out of Gloucester
Massachusetts, and their crews who were lost at sea
between the years 1830 to October 1, 1873.

There are 1437 names of those lost, plus the names of 296
Vessels in this set of records. Sometimes passengers were
on board, as well as crew members

Olive Tree Volunteers have finished up to 1860 so I have
put these online. The rest will follow as completed.

Start at the intro then click through by year for lists of
those lost.
  http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/gloucester.shtml

Some of the places mentioned where the ships went down are
given as Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, Boston, Maine,
and more.

There are interesting tidbits with the lists, both of those
who died and those who survived. For example the tale of
this young man on board the Sevo in 1857, would be great to
have if he is your ancestor!

"Winthrop Sargent, a lad of twelve years crawled out to the
end of the bowsprit, and as the vessal was going down,
grasped a splitting table which floated by, and by his
cries attracted the attention of those on board the
steamer, who rescued him with much difficulty" The story
goes on to add "On the return trip of the steamer, young
Sargent was brought home, and at two o'clock in the morning,
was landed at Eastern point, and lad though he was,
commenced his lonely journey of walking to town. He reached
his father's house at about four o'clock, and knowing that
he slept in a bed-room on the lower floor, tapped on the
window. His father immediately awoke and exclaimed, "Who
is there?", "It's your boy Winthrop, " was the reply. Mr.
Sargent at first thought it must be the ghost of the lad,
as he had given him up as drowned, but young Winthrop had
no idea of being taken for a ghost, and soon gave evidence
that he was alive and well, which caused great rejoicing in
the family. "

Here's an example of what you can find written about those
who perished: "Schooner JOHN FRANKLIN was lost while coming
from Prince Edward Island, in the winter of 1858-59. Had
several passengers on board, and it is supposed fourteen
persons went down in this vessel. Her Crew list was as
follows: John McDonald, Master; Dennis Murphy, Mate, John
Cogle, Neil McNeil, Angus Chisholm, Edward Malady. The
family of Cogle were among the Passengers"

It's interesting reading, and I hope you find an ancestor
or two! Enjoy, and please pass this message on to any
people or any lists you think might be interested.

Hello all

Has it really been 3 weeks since my last newsletter? It's been a
busy month for me - my volunteer transcribers have been working very
hard and it is all I can do to keep the files going to them and
working on them when they are returned to me.

You should start seeing the new records coming online starting next
week (fingers crossed!) Here's a little sneak preview list of what
is coming online in the next few months -

--Return of Emigrants Landed at the Port of Kingston Canada, their
destination, etc. 1862-1881
--Baptisms at Deerpark (Machackemeck) NY 1700s
--List of Irish Poor, 1860-1861
--Ships Passenger Lists to Galveston, Texas
--List of Crew and Passengers on Gloucester Shipwrecks

The last 3 databases have already been started and are online on
Olive Tree Genealogy. See
http://olivetreegenealogy.com/free1204.shtml and
http://olivetreegenealogy.com/free1004.shtml for links

I have also been very busy completing a book that has been 4 years
in the making!

Here's what's new in this issue:

1. New Book from Lorine
2. More Death Records online
3. Immigration Records for Boston Massachusetts

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
1. New Book from Lorine

My latest book "New Netherland Settlers: Willem Pieterse Van Slyke
aka Willem Neef - A genealogy to five generations of the
descendants of Willem Pieterse Van Slyke who settled in New
Netherland (New York) in 1660" is finally ready!

Cornelise' Antonissen Van Slyke's nephew Willem Pieterse Van Slyke
and his descendants were briefly discussed in my first book on the
Van Slyke family "The Van Slyke Family in America: A Genealogy of
Cornelis Anotnissen Van Slyke,1604- 1676 and his Mohawk wife Ots-
Toch, including the story of Jacques Hertel, 1603-1651, Father of
Ots-Toch and Interpreter to Samuel de Champlain". In the years that
followed, I realized it was time to give Willem a book of his own.

Sometimes one event leads to another serendiptious finding.Such was
the case with this book. During my four year research period on this
book, I was researching other families for a planned series on New
Netherland settlers. In-depth research on another family led me to
an unexpected revelation of a family connection - one which affects
Van Slyke and Barheit descendants.

Other mysteries were solved along the way, and I hope that Van Slyke
descendants are pleased with my findings.

For more details and a description of the new book, please
see http://olivetreegenealogy.com/nn/surnames/vslyke.shtml

I would really appreciate it if you let other Van Slyke/Slyck
cousins and friends know that the book is ready, as many of the
emails I have are outdated.

2. More Death Records online

If you are looking for death records, Brian of AncestorsAtRest.com

newspapers at
http://www.ancestorsatrest.com/michigan.shtml

More Coffin Plates for the U.S. and Canada on line in the last week
at
http://www.ancestorsatrest.com/coffin_plates/

3. Immigration Records for Boston Massachusetts

My friend Steve Morse (of the Ellis Island One-Step Search Engine)
writes to tell me

"I just created some one-step tools for the Boston passenger
records from 1891 to 1943. As with the other ports, I have three
Boston tools -- one that searches for passengers, one that gives you
direct access to the manifests, and one that allows you to find ship
arrivals.

It's at http://stevemorse.org/ellis/bostfolder.html

Hi everyone

It's been a busy month. VOlunteer transcribers have been busy typing
up databases for Olive Tree Genealogy, but I have only just begun to
put them online.

I also started a new mailing list for the surname BARHEIT. If you
are a descendant of this name, you might want to join the list by
sending a message
to BARHEIT-L-request@... that contains the word

subscribe

and nothing else.

Did I mention I took over the NY ORPHANGES mailing list? The list
administrator left, it needed an admin, so..... I adopted it. I hate
to see a list flounder! People can subscribe to the list in mail
mode by sending a message to NY-ORPHANAGES-L-request@...

RAMSGATE ENGLAND NEWSPAPER CLIPPINGS

I just finished putting newspaper clippings from Ramsgate Kent
England newspapers from 1908 to 1922 online on my site.

These English newspaper clippings were found in my grandmother's
papers. Her mother Sarah Jane (Stead) Simpson lived in Ramsgate Kent
England from her birth in 1862 to her death in 1952, and kept these
clippings of births, deaths, marriages and memoriams from 1907 to
1922 (with gaps).

Some are Births, Marriages and Deaths of my English ancestors. I
decided to type up all the clippings to share these genealogy
announcements with others who are searching for their English
ancestry.

Locations mentioned in these clippings include Australia, Ontario
Canada and other parts of England.

St. Mary's Church, Lenham Kent England

I've just uploaded 381 births, marriages and deaths taken
from the register of St Mary's Church in Lenham Kent.

http://olivetreegenealogy.com/england/lenham-births.shtml
will get you started.

These records of births, baptisms, marriages, deaths and
burials at St. Mary's Church in Lenham, Kent, England were
made by my mother in 2000. While on a visit to Lenham Kent
England, she visited St. Mary's where she abstracted 381
surname records with a connection to our family genealogy.

These are not complete records from St. Mary's, they are
only a partial transcript of vital records taken from
register books still held in the church. The 381 records
abstracted by my mother start in 1592 and end in 1891. I
hope they help someone find an ancestor.

Hi everyone

I just returned from a week in Salt Lake City doing research at the
wonderful Library there. If you ever get a chance to make that trip,
do! It's fantastic.

I wrote up 10 Tips for using the Library called "Salt Lake City,
Ready, Set, Go!" if you are interested. It's at
http://olivetreegenealogy.com/articles/slc.shtml

I had good success with one of my lines and managed to find my g-g-
grandmother's parents. I can't wait to return next year and look for
more

Still on the personal side of things, my new grandson was born April
11th - Colby is my youngest son's first child. You can have a look
at the bio of Tyler (my son) and a pic of little Colby (one day
old!) at http://olivetreegenealogy.com/tyler.shtml

I already had the fun of looking after Colby for an entire night
(I'd forgotten what it's like to get up every 3 hours!) and am
enjoying him immensely.

I hope everyone knows about Steve Morse's new one-step search engine
for Philadelphia Passenger Records (1883-1945). Steve's One-Step
Search Engines are quickly becoming the most popular genealogy
search engines online.

To view all Steve's One-Steps, see http://stevemorse.org/

************************

Some of you may have visited http://blacksheepancestors.com/ (my
son's genealogy website, chock full of prison records and other
blacksheep data) There is now an announcement mailing list geared
just for blacksheep ancestors, where notices of new records will be
made. If you want to join (it's free) go to

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/blacksheepancestors/join

************************

I don't usually announce Ancestry.com's new sales and such, but they
have a very good deal on right now. It only lasts til May 20th so I
thought I would let you know about it, especially since it includes
the entire Immigration Database they have online.

With this deal you can save over $200.00 on the Ancestry Value
Collection. Separately these 5 databases cost $409.75. For only
$199.95 you have a one-year subscription to all of these:

  US Records Collection
  One World Tree
  US Census Collection
  United Kingdom & Ireland Collection
  Immigration Collection

For details on what these collections include, see
http://olivetreegenealogy.com/value-collection.shtml

************************

I have a lot of new databases for volunteers to transcribe to go
online on Olive Tree - some terrific new immigration databases for
the USA, some Canadian records, some English records, and more. They
will hopefully be online in the next few months so keep watching my
Monthly List of New Free Databases. The index to each month's list
is at http://olivetreegenealogy.com/freedata.shtml but I'm a little
behind in updating it.

Anyone having trouble navigating Olive Tree might want to try my
Site Map -- http://olivetreegenealogy.com/sitemap.shtml

It is a text list of what's online, with direct links to get you
there.

Good luck in your searches!

now has 33 more ships added, and will search over 500 ships

This Search Engine is labelled "Search FREE Ships Passenger

Hi Everyone

I hope you are all enjoying great weather! It's unseasonably warm
where I live and it's a treat. May was super busy and hectic and my
volunteers are working hard at several new databases.

In this issue:

* Marriage Bonds Ontario & Quebec 1779-1865
* New Jersey Naturalization Records
* Site Maps, learning how to get around my websites
* Blogs and Newsfeeds

*********************
Marriage Bonds Ontario & Quebec 1779-1865

Today I want to tell you about a new (free) database at Library &
Archives canada. Those seeking Canadian ancestors in Quebec or
Ontario will want to visit.

It is difficult to trace a marriage that took place in a Protestant
church in Quebec(Lower Canada) and Ontario (Upper Canada) before
1867.

Marriage bonds were prepared for Protestant marriages by licence.
After obtaining the bond, a licence was issued and the marriage took
place a few days later.

Library and Archives Canada holds:

2960 marriage bonds for Lower Canada (Quebec) issued between 1779
and 1858

7899 marriage bonds for Upper Canada (Ontario) issued between 1803
and 1865

A typical search reveals:

~ Name of the future husband
~ Name of the future wife
~ Their place of residence
~ Names of the sureties (people who knew the groom and would
guarantee that no legal reasons existed why the couple could not
marry)
~ Date and place where the bond was issued

These bonds are now searchable online at Library & Archives Canada at

http://www.collectionscanada.ca/022/012/index-e.html

*********************
New Jersey Naturalization Records

There are new free records online for New Jersey Supreme Court &
Burlington County Court, Clerks Office for Naturalization records
1818-1898 (P Surnames)

These are found at NaturalizationRecords.com website at
http://naturalizationrecords.com/usa/nj-naturalizations1818-
1898.shtml

*********************
Site Maps

Most of my websites have their own Site Maps to help visitors find
what they're looking for. Some of you may not know this little
trick, so here's the URLs to my Site Maps. These are no-frills,
lists of general areas of each website. For my smaller website, I
also have links to the databases. For Olive Tree Genealogy website
this isn't possible to do as there are too many (over 1,400!), but
the links to categories may be of help.

*********************
Blogs and Newsfeeds

I really want to encourage you to start using Newsfeeds. I like
Bloglines, which is a web-based reader found at
http://www.bloglines.com/

Using a NewsReader like Bloglines allows you to subscribe (for free)
to as many Genealogy or other interest Blogs as you want. Then, each
day you would go to Bloglines, check your Feeds, and read the
headlines and/or stories written for each Blog. It's like getting
dozens of newspapers at your door each morning -- but only having to
quickly read the headlines or first paragraph -- then deciding
whether or not to read more.

I subscribe to several Genealogy Blogs. Some of them are general,
others are daily Genealogy news accounts, which keeps me informed
and up to date on what's happening in the Genealogy Community. Of
course I subscribe to my own Genealogy Blogs too!

Olive Tree has its own Blog, with headlines of what's happening in
the Genealogy Community as well as tidbits about my websites. My
Blog isn't the same as this newsletter, so you might be interested
in subscribing or at least taking a look. Some events that I talk
about here in the newsletter are also mentioned in my Blog, many are
not.

To subscribe:

http://www.bloglines.com/sub/http://olivetreegenealogy.blogspot.com/a
tom.xml

To check it out and take a look:

http://olivetreegenealogy.blogspot.com/

I also subscribed to a few humor Blogs, one Antique one.. you get
the idea I'm sure. You can customize your Newsfeeds to suit your
tastes.

When you get to http://olivetreegenealogy.blogspot.com/ look at the
left hand side bar, about half-way down. You will see icons allowing
you to easily add my blog to "MyYahoo" or "MyMSN" which means you
wouldn't use Bloglines to read it, you'd use Yahoo or MSN. There are
other readers too, take a look and see what suits you best.

Other Blogs you might want to add to your newsfeed:

http://paper-trail.blogspot.com/
http://familybibles.blogspot.com/
http://ancestorsatrest.blogspot.com/

Each of those has icons making it easy for you to add to any
Newsfeed Reader you end up using.

Have fun!

LOST FACES - Old Photo Albums online

Some of you know that I have a little corner of my website
called "Lost Faces". LOST FACES is my collection of Family
Photo Albums. One of my little hobbies is going to flea
markets and garage sales. Whenever I spot one of those old
Photo Albums from the 1800s with family pictures, I have to
buy it! I can't bear the thought that the album and photos
will be lost or destroyed. Even though they aren't my
ancestors, and they can be very expensive, I can't walk away
without it.

I recently found three Civil War era brass bound photo album
in an antique store. Maybe someone can spot an ancestor! The albumsy
are:

~~ Civil War Era Photo Album of Mrs. W. D. Hanchette

Surnames include Hanchette, Bissell, Sigmund, Warren, Hirradale?,
Doolittle, Knapp, Graham, Cottrell, Harding:

Locations include: Philadelphia Pennsylvania

~~ Civil War Era Photo Album Hoover family of Pennsylvania

Surnames include: Hoover, Herr, Groff, Souders

Locations include : Lancaster Pennsylvania

~~ LEE, WILLSON, BADENOCH Family Album of Brant County, Ontario

Surnames include Lee, Willson, Badenoch, Pepper, Shaver, Muma,
Edwards, Blundy, Weaver, Clark, Lever, Green, Drake, Mannen, Bell,
Jacobs, heron, Kitchen

Canada) and Little Falls New York

You'll find an index here

Odds 'n Ends

Anybirthday.com is offline for good. Their server used to
crash at times, but you could always get to their search
form although you couldn't do a search. Now you can't even
get to their search form -- you get a page-not-found error
instead. And when you go to their partner site,
locateme.com, you get a message saying that their domain
registration has expired.

That means that Steve Morse's one-step form which obtains
its data from anybirthday.com no longer works. But the good
news is that he has found another source for the birthday
data and created a one-step form for it. You can find that
one-step form in the Births and Deaths section of his
homepage http://stevemorse.org/

There are two links for birthday forms there -- one to the
now-defunct anybirthday.com and the other that uses this new
source.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Last but not Least!

I have a neat little spot on Olive Tree Genealogy that provides
daily updates of new genealogy data put online. I just figured out
how to do this automatically a few weeks ago and am so excited about
it I want to share it with everyone. The records are FREE and they
are updated every day. I think you'll find it helpful in your search
for miscellaneous records like family bibles, old letters, funeral
cards, and much much more.

You can see the list, and click to view the full document, on any of
my Genealogy Section pages such as Ships Passenger Lists at
http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/

Scroll down a bit to "What's New in FREE Genealogy Records" The left
side of the yellow box has free trials on Ancestry and
Genealogy.com. The right side has the free Olive Tree documents.

Bookmark the page and you can come back and check every few days to
see what new records I've added to the collection.

Enjoy!

Hello everyone

Well, summer is almost over and it has flown by! I've been super
busy (aren't we all!) with my new grandson who is now 4 months old,
my son's wedding (two weeks away) and of course, my websites.

Yesterday I put a brand new website online -- I'm really excited
about it, so please take a minute and have a look. Let me know what
you think! It's for English Genealogy and is called
AllEnglishRecords.com It's at http://allenglishrecords.com/

It might have some 'bugs' or wrinkles in it as I haven't had a lot
of time to finish checking that all the links work and all the pages
are there. Bear with me as I work on it over the next few weeks.

My idea behind this website is to gather as many English, Irish and
Scottish records as I can so those of us with English heritage can
more easily find our ancestors. I also wanted to link to all my
odds 'n ends of records on my other websites, to make sure visitors
can find them more easily. I've got English records online that I'd
forgotten about! You know you have too many websites when you can't
remember what's on them :-)

Read on for more news of new records online. Remember all records on
Olive Tree Genealogy and all my partner sites are FREE. There is no
cost to use them, so enjoy!
