Hello everyone

I hope those who celebrated the Canadian Thanksgiving had a
wonderful weekend. It was close to 80' where I live and we
had a couple of gorgeous Fall days. With my son deployed,
our Thanksgiving was rather quiet. We did hear from him and
all is well, so that was definitely something to be
thankful for.

I've been working hard on a new project (Missing Friends)
that I think you are going to enjoy... and last night the
first part of it went live on Olive Tree Genealogy. It's
free of course, so please drop by and check for your
ancestor names. Remember, it's an ongoing project so
bookmark it and drop by every so often to see what new
years are online.

I'm pretty excited about this so hear's what it's all
about: The Missing Friends Project on
OliveTreeGenealogy.com is extracting the names of those who
immigrated from UK to America or Canada and who were
inquired about by family in various 19th Century
newspapers.

This project can be freely searched at
http://www.olivetreegenealogy.com/MissingFriends/

Missing Friends Project starts with Lloyd's Weekly
Newspaper, published in London England and their weekly
column (1886-1900) called "Long Lost Relatives".

The fields being extracted are name of person in America or
Canada who is missing, where they lived in the UK, when
they left, where they intended going, ship name if known,
when they were last heard from, where they were living when
last heard from, who is seeking them and any miscellaneous
comments.

If you have ancestors who settled in America or Canada from
the mid 1800s to 1900 you may want to have a look

http://www.olivetreegenealogy.com/MissingFriends/

It's a huge job and right now I'm working on this alone, so
please be patient as I extract more names from these
newspapers.

New on AncestorsAtRest.com - Brian has put another Maine
ledger book online. This great old ledger book was the
property of Samuel Hinds, of Lincoln County Maine. The
ledger starts in 1832 and has 169 pages containing hundreds
of local Lincoln County Maine names.

They are living in places like Bristol, Bremen, Dresden, St
George. All the pages from the ledger have been scanned
and put online so you can browse the entire book freely.

If you want to take a look for one of your ancestors go to

Hi everyone,

I just had to share this exciting news with everyone:

Incoming UK Ships Passenger lists are now online!
Genealogists can now search for ancestors on UK Incoming
Ships Passenger Lists, 1878-1960

These new passenger lists include OUTBOUND lists from
Canada and America as well as other countries such as
Australia, all heading for ports in the United Kingdom.

Read more about this terrific new Ancestry resource at
http://olivetreegenealogy.blogspot.com/

Neither Canada or America maintained "outbound" passenger
lists. The records for all these ship passengers travelling
between 1890 and 1960 are the only United Kingdom "inbound"
lists, but prior to this month, they were not indexed, nor
microfilmed.

The original inbound lists were kept at Public Record
Office in Kew, England, and they could only be viewed in
person. Now they are online and I've been having a lot of
fun finding my own ancestors going back to England &
Ireland from Canada. Sometimes they went for a visit, other
times they had been visiting here in Canada or in America
and were going back home.

I hope you enjoy this new resource as much as I am.

Ontario Voter's Lists 1867-1900 are now online. I took a
few minutes to search them this morning for my own
ancestors, and it's well worth having a look.

                   http://tiny.cc/uJ1kJ

Some years have information - name of voter, residence, and
whether the individual was an occupant, owner or tenant of
the home he was in. Even though it may seem basic, it helps
determine where and if an ancestor was living in those
years.

Voter registers are valuable records to use as census
substitutes, since they will usually contain the names of
heads of households and other adults.

Although the title of this database is ONTARIO Voter's
List, I found over 500 names from Montreal Centre, Quebec
in the 1867 lists. I also found hundreds of women even
though the description of the database states that no women
are on these lists.

So that makes even more reason to search Ontario Voter's
Lists 1867-1900 - there ARE women on the list and there are
names from Quebec as well as Ontario.

You can read more and follow the link to this database at
Olive Tree Genealogy Blog at http://tiny.cc/uJ1kJ

Feel free to pass this message on to other lists if it's on
topic or to others who you think might be interested.

Hello everyone

There seems to be renewed interest in tracing an ancestor
who arrived in Canada before 1865 - a challenging time
period!

This is an update to the original note I wrote in February
2007 about Immigration Projects Online and ships passenger
lists to Canada before 1865.

Remember that before 1865, Canada did not require ships
passenger lists to be kept so these projects may be all you
can find for an ancestor's arrival

Hi everyone,

Only 10 more days til Christmas, for those who celebrate it. I am busy
preparing for a dinner for 16 on the 28th. I'm looking forward to it
but it is tinged with sadness too, as my son is deployed in
Afghanistan (for the third time) and won't be with us this year.
However we will still celebrate and enjoy family while keeping him in
our hearts and minds.

December has not seen much activity on OliveTreeGenealogy.com or its
sister sites. I hope to be back in full swing in January but meantime
here are some items that might be of interest

November free data put online can be found at

I've kept up with my blog posts and articles and here are a few from
December that might interest you.

First Canadian Christmas Carol - The Huron Carol Jesous Ahatonhia

The first Canadian Christmas Carol was written by a Jesuit Missionary
(Jean de Brebeuf) circa 1643 for the Huron Indians in the wilderness
of what is now Ontario. The Jesuits ministered to the Hurons at Ste
Marie - a wilderness fortified village. I have put the words to this
beautiful carol in Huron-Wendat language, and English, on my blog. As
well I've put a video which features a beautiful rendition in Huron,
French and then English. This carol ties into my ancestry in several
different ways and I thought readers might find it of interest

My great-grandmother Sarah Jane Simpson, who was born in England in

she kept a boarding house. I suspect she used this toast rack on the
table for her family and boarders. Pictures and story at

Q & A Time: Ships Passenger List ca 1859 to USA or Canada?
I often respond to queries on mailing lists. I established 2 Rootsweb
mailing lists for Ships Passenger lists
(can-shipslists-pre1865@... &
US-SHIPSLISTS-PRE1820@...) and another 2 for Naturalization
records (CAN-Naturalizations@... &
USA-Naturalizations@...) several years ago and as List Admin
I follow them closely. But I also read other immigration mailing lists
and jump in when I can. The following is an example that I thought
might be of interest. It's a query and it's very well written (which
sad to say is unusual on mailing lists. Read how I found Tony's

The Ancestor Most Wanted this month is not mine, but my husband's.
William Ivis Massey was born 16 Nov 1847 in Quebec to William Massey

respond, one woman found a record I needed and won one of the $75.00

loved the hunt and thanking me for my website. Wow, talk about a nice
Christmas present!

Happy New Year! I hope 2009 will prove to be sucessful in
every way.

December was a busy month so I didn't have too much time to
bring new data online. However I do have some news that I
think is kind of exciting.

Some of you probably know that I read and answer a lot of
questions on various genealogy mailing lists. I've been
doing this for years but I decided that starting in 2009 I
would use a slightly different method.

Don't get me wrong, I am still going to respond to mailing
list queries whenever possible. But I thought there was a
better way to help other researchers, so I started a Blog
called Ask Olive Tree. It's at
http://askolivetree.blogspot.com/

AskOliveTree is a central place where I can post your
questions and my answers, and where anyone dropping by can
read them - and join in! Yes, anyone can leave a comment on
any of the queries and answers on AskOliveTree.

Do you need help finding an ancestor? Do you have a
genealogy question you would like to ask me? Do you want to
know where to find certain genealogy records?

You can ask any kind of question from "How do I find my
grandpa Harry on a ships' passenger list from Ireland to
New York in the 1800s?" to "What's the Dutch name for
Anna?" to "What does the British Bonus System mean?" (all
of these are actual questions asked and answered)

If you want help finding an elusive ancestor, please be
sure that you provide me with a concise (brief) summary of
your ancestor with dates and locations. Tell me where you
have looked and what you want to find out.

Basically I want to help - either by finding your elusive
ancestor, or by directing you to the sources you need to
find him/her yourself or by answering a question about
resources or name and boundary changes or.... whatever!

The email address to use if you want to submit a question
is askolivetree@...

So take a peek at my new site
http://askolivetree.blogspot.com/ Ask Olive Tree. Read a
few of the queries already posted and then flex your typing
fingers and send me a question.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Hi everyone

I hope your January weather is being kinder to you where you live
than it is to me. It has been 20 and 30 below zero for several days
and we have had blizzards, ice storms and high winds. Even for
Canada this is miserable!

There hasn't been much time recently for me to add new data to
http://www.OliveTreeGenealogy.com or any of my other sites as my 93
year old mother has been in hospital for a few weeks now.

She underwent surgery for a bowel obstruction and is now facing a
second operation for post-surgery complications. She was not given
much hope of pulling through the first operation but has surprised
everyone with her determination. Right now she is holding her own
and we are waiting to hear about the second possible surgery.

********
During the first week of my mother's stay in hospital when she was
not given much hope of lasting more than a few days, I sat up one
night and wrote her obituary. I wanted to get the facts of her life
down on paper while my thoughts were relatively clear.

Trying to write my mother's obit led me to think about the
importance of finding out things from our loved ones before it is
too late. I wrote about this and it is called "The Things I Thought
I Knew But Don't " and can be read at
http://olivetreegenealogy.blogspot.com/2009/01/things-i-thought-i-
knew-but-dont.html

You can also see that post plus others written in January by going

My new project AskOliveTree at http://askolivetree.blogspot.com is
going well. This is a blog where researchers send me genealogy or
history questions at askolivetree@... and I respond. I choose
one question each day to answer and post on the new blog. If you
asked a question and are wondering if it has been answered yet, here
is a brief summary of questions asked and answered since Jan. 1st

You might also find some of the answers helpful in your own research
even if you are not the person who asked the original question.
AskOliveTree! Is not a lookup service, my hope is to direct you to
the sources (online and offline) you need to find your answer.
However in several of the cases below you'll find that I did find
the ancestor or the event requested.

I have included the date of the response, the title, the first name
of the person asking, and the first part of the original question

Last but certainly not least, I discovered an amazing website that
is a boon to those with Ontario Canada roots. If you have not been
there already you may want to visit http://ourontario.ca/

OurOntario.ca: contains digital collections of libraries, archives,
museums, historical societies, community groups, government agencies
and private collections in Ontario, all in one search.

That's it for today, good luck in your genealogy searches!

Hello friends and fellow researchers,

My 92 year old mother passed away early Wednesay morning. I visited
her Tuesday afternoon in the hospital. When I went to kiss her
goodbye, she tried to raise her head, and my glasses hit her cheek.
She laughed at our bumping of heads. As I left she smiled and waved.

I'm glad I have that nice last memory of her. While I am sad that
she is gone, she lived a full and healthy life up to the end.

This is her obituary and a brief slideshow in her memory:

Happy Birthday to OliveTreeGenealogy.com! In the winter of 1995 a
small version of Olive Tree Genealogy appeared but the full version
complete with the name in the URL did not arrive until February
1996. This month Olive Tree Genealogy is 13 years old. That's 13

I've been unpacking the dozen boxes I brought back from my mother's
apartment last week. In my blog I talk about clearing her apartment
after her death, bringing the boxes (and her ashes) home, and
starting the massive job of unpacking and sorting. All sorts of
questions arise as one undertakes something like this - What
genealogy treasures will be found? What to do with the mementoes of
her life that need to be passed on to her grandchildren and great-
grandchildren? How to preserve and share her writing, trip diaries
and memoirs?

Join us at http://www.olivetreegenealogy.blogspot.com/ to take part
in the discussion or just to read about the progress I am making.
Here is what readers and I have been discussing so far:

* Packing Up A Life (Excerpt: How do you pack up a life? That is
what my brother and I had to do this past Monday and Tuesday.....)

* Packing Up A Life, Day 2 (Excerpt: Day 1 of packing up my mother's
belongings from her apartment was over.....)

* Almost a Dozen Boxes of Life, Where do I Begin? (Excerpt:
Yesterday I looked at the 11 large cardboard boxes and 2 huge
plastic tubs containing my mother's life. ...)

* Unpacking the Genealogy Treasures (Excerpt: These are a few of the
items found in the first box I unpacked. Mother's Pilot Log Book was
a suprise....)

Have a great February and good luck in your genealogy searches,

Happy belated Valentine's Day everyone! I hope you all enjoyed

Genealogy and Family Hope Chest

A series of Blog Posts on creating a Genealogy and Family Hope Chest
has been started on Olive Tree Genealogy Blog. Steps 1 to 5 are
already posted and you may find it of some interest.

It's easiest to start at http://olivetreegenealogy.blogspot.com/
and look for the label on the right hand side "Genealogy Family Hope
Chest" Click on that link and you will see all the posts plus
photos.

Your feedback is always welcome! Just post a comment on the blog,
it's easy to do. Perhaps you have an idea I didn't mention - please
let me know!

BlackSheep Ancestors

The next topic for the Canadian Genealogy Carnival is Black Sheep
Canadian Ancestors and I've been asked to host it. I'm quite excited
about this!

Do you have a blacksheep ancestor in your family tree? Maybe one of
your ancestors was a rogue, a scoundrel, a cad or just someone
who "done Grandma wrong... "

Did great-grandma spend time in prison? Was Grandpa a bigamist? Did
Great-Uncle Harry try to set fire to his neighbour's house? Most of
us have one or two rebellious ancestors who didn't quite fit the
mold. Even if you haven't got a blacksheep Canadian ancestor, tell
us about any blacksheep Canadian.

See http://olivetreegenealogy.blogspot.com/ for submission
information. There are 5 prizes to be given out - 5 books on
Researching Canadian Ancestors which Ancestry.ca has donated for the
carnival.

Hi everyone

Spring is back! We are having beautiful 50' weather, it's
sunny and most of the snow has melted. Our chickens and
guineas are happily pecking around in the fields and yards
looking for bugs. They are inside all winter and getting
out is a treat for them. In the non-snow weather they range
freely and can roam wherever they want.

I hope your weather was as enjoyable today (or better!)

Well, my book on the King family of Arkell Ontario is going
to the printer next week. Yay! I love it when a book
is completed and ready to share with others.

"From England to Arkell: The story of two pioneer settlers,
Lewis & Thomas King who left Suffolk England for
the Wilds of Upper Canada in 1831 A Genealogy to 4
Generations following their descendants in Ontario,
Alberta, Australia & Michigan" is the title.

It is 87 pages of documents, photos and stories. It was a
very exciting time in Upper Canada (present day Ontario)
and Arkell was a brand new settlement just outside of
Guelph. Some of Lewis and Thomas' descendants settled in
Michigan as well as other countries, and many stayed in
Ontario. If you are a descendant you may be interested in
this detailed book.

You can read more at http://tiny.cc/37eqP

And for those who are patiently waiting for the PEER book
on the Peer Family in America and Canada, please be patient
just a wee bit longer. The final draft is being proofed, so
fingers crossed it comes back soon and can go to print.

Hi Everyone

What a beautiful day we are having - sunny (although cold!) and a welcome change
from the SNOW we had all day yesterday! I thought this was Spring but apparently
not....

Good news - my son who was deployed to Afghanistan is now home with his wife and
children, safe and sound. He did suffer a sudden illness on his way back to
Canada and was hospitalized in England briefly, which delayed his homecoming but
he's on the mend now.

Hello everyone

Well, I took a little break over Easter and feel much more rested now! I hope
everyone had a good holiday.

After almost 3 months, my mother and father's ashes will finally be interred in
Woodlawn Cemetery in Guelph. We're going to have a Memorial Service in May which
I'm looking forward to. WE have a very nice spot for them together so they will
be going home to rest with other family members.

Now - here's what is new on Olive Tree Genealogy and her sister sites.

First - Great news:

Read about the COMPLETE Canadian Census 1851-1916 Coming Online in June!

  http://tinyurl.com/clrwpx

This is really exciting. There are bits and pieces of this collection online now
but nothing yet for 1861 (except a few transcriptions online). 1871 is only a
head of house index online and 1881 is the very badly done transcribed version.
This new collection will be indexed with actual images. I can hardly wait!

Easter Bunny's Family Tree Found!

Breaking news - yesterday a little girl named Alice was playing in the garden of
an old house in England when she fell down a large rabbit hole. Before climbing
out she made a unique discovery. In a small wooden box under a pile of rabbit
fur hats Alice spotted a yellowed letter. The letter was addressed to "Dear
Easter" and signed "Uncle Wiggily", and it provided details of an interesting
family tree! Continue reading the letter at

Hello everyone

Last week I took my parents' ashes to Guelph to be interred. It was a miserable
cold rainy day and we stumbled around the Cemetery trying to find graves of
several of my ancestors.

Even with a map of the cemetery (it doesn't mark specific locations, only vague
general areas) we could only find a few of the ones I wanted to take pictures
of. We will try again when we go to the Memorial for my mom and dad next week.

On the way home it actually SNOWED! Can you believe it?? This weekend has been a
mixture - yesterday hot and humid with bad thunderstorms all day. Today it is
quite cold and has rained most of the day. I'm not sure where Spring is....

Last week I talked about what a shock I had when my Grandma's ashes went
missing. My Grandmother died in January 1985. She was cremated and then interred
in Guelph Ontario (or so I thought until yesterday). I had actually thought she
was buried in Owen Sound which is where she died. I know - as a genealogist
you'd think I would have known for sure but I made an assumption. Read more at

Other Items in the Genealogy Newsworld are Border Crossings From U.S. to Canada,
1908-1935 online (see
http://olivetreegenealogy.blogspot.com/2009/04/border-crossings-from-us-to-canad\
a-1908.html ) This database contains records of immigrants crossing into Canada
from the United States between 1908 and 1935. These records consist of border
entry lists and Form 30 (individual entry forms). Information recorded in these
records may include: name of immigratn, port of arrival, date of arrival, age,
gender, country of citizenship, birthplace, marital status, and last permanent
address.

Also Ancestry's new search and hot keys option is pretty cool. Yesterday while
using Ancestry.com website, I saw a notice at the top of the main Search Page
"Try out the New Ancestry Search". There was a small arrow labelled "Try it" and
another labelled "Tour". I played around with this and reported on it (pros and
cons) at
http://olivetreegenealogy.blogspot.com/2009/04/ancestrys-new-search-and-hot-keys\

Enjoy and happy hunting!

Hello everyone,

Mother's Day for those who celebrate it, is this Sunday. An early Happy Mother's
Day to all mothers out there. Don't forget to phone or visit your mother and
grandmother on that Special Day.

Last weekend was the Memorial Service for my mother and father. It went very
well and everyone seemed to like the Ceremony I planned. My husband and I went
to the city the day before so that we could place small Canadian flags on the
graves of other ancestors in that cemetery, and a large flag where my mom and
dad were interred with my mother's parents. It was cold, rainy and miserable
but we found 6 graves for our flags and I left a polished stone at each one we
visited.

Unfortunately I came down with a bad cold that weekend, and have been sick with
bronchitis. So I missed last Sunday's newsletter, and also several days of Ask
Olive questions and answers. I was pretty much on the couch feeling sorry for
myself! There are some challenging questions for Ask Olive that I'm itching to
get at :-)

While wandering around the cemetery, I was struck by the beauty and architecture
of many of the tombstones. That led me to thinking about tombstone rubbings and
I've written about them and how you might incorporate them into a children's
genealogy activity at
http://olivetreegenealogy.blogspot.com/2009/05/tombstone-rubbings.html

After the ceremony was over we hunted through two other cemeteries which hold
the graves of many of my English ancestors who were among the first group of
settlers in a small village in 1831. I was saddened and horrified at the neglect
of one of them. You can read about that and see some pictures of the neglected
and broken tombstones at

Don't Miss This Site!

Also, I discovered a new newspaper archive website last week. Maybe everyone but
me knew about it but I was very impressed and thrilled by all the information I
found on my ancestors in just a couple of days. I am still exploring this site

wrote about it on May 1st at

A Fun Project to do with Children

One of the items I wrote about last week and which I'm still thinking about, is
Making a Genealogy Time Capsule. I have a 3-part series on that idea on my Olive

http://olivetreegenealogy.blogspot.com/search/label/Genealogy%20Time%20Capsule
and you can read all 3 posts there. The more I think about this, the more I like
the idea of making one with my two oldest grandchildren this summer!

* Understanding Dit Names (asked by Patrick)

* What's the Difference Between a Loyalist and a Tory? (asked by Sheri)

* Finding an Ancestor's Death (asked by Marilyn)

I have no answers completed yet for next week's questions but I'll be working on
that today and tomorrow. There are some very challenging and interesting ones
waiting in my Ask Olive inbox! If you have a question you'd like to submit, send

Hello Everyone

Well, we've had excitement galore in the past week. I was working at my computer
early one morning at my desk which is in front of a large picture window
overlooking our back deck and rear of our property. Suddenly a large MOOSE
appeared in my line of vision!

It had come out of the woods and was against the deck railing (about 8 feet from
my desk). It wandered around our yard heading towards the donkey field when
something spooked it and off it trotted back into the woods. Believe me this is
not an everyday occurence. In fact I've never seen a real moose in my life
before! They don't usually come this far south apparently.

Wishing those who celebrate it, a good Memorial Day weekend. Footnote.com is
offering a special draw for a life-time membership this weekend. You can read
about it at http://olivetreegenealogy.blogspot.com

In the genealogy world, here's what's been going on:

At http://olivetreegenealogy.blogspot.com/ there is a 3-part series (complete
with graphics) on Using Ireland Civil Registration Indexes to obtain Vital Stats
Certificates. It's a rather intimidating process so I thought this might be
helpful to those seeking their Irish roots. The series takes you step by step
through the full process and should be easy to follow for your own Irish
ancestors.

There is also an announcement about Nova Scotia Black Loyalists Searchable
Database online. This is an exciting project for those with black roots in Nova
Scotia.

On May 20th I posted an informational how-to article (complete with graphics)
on Ordering English Certificates of Birth, Marriage or Death online. This should
help anyone with English ancestors, as the Certificates hold a great deal of
valuable genealogical information and are quite reasonable in cost.

Not to be missed is the 4-part series on Abandoned in Australia, the true story
of my 2nd great grandfather facing difficult choices in 1867 after the death of
his wife and 6 month old son in Australia. Great great grandfather returned to
England with 2 of his 4 children, so the story in our family went, but was it
true? And if so, which children did he leave behind, and what happened to them?

On http://askolivetree.blogspot.com I was honoured to present our first Guest
Genealogist - Brenda Dougall Merriman. Since 1979 Brenda has been certified by
the Board for Certification of Genealogists (Washington DC) and later served six
years as a BCG trustee. In 1996 she founded the group that became the Ontario
Chapter, Association of Professional Genealogists (OCAPG). After years of client
research, speaking engagements and working with the National Institute for
Genealogical Studies, Brenda now concentrates on writing, some continued work
with the Jackman Foundation-sponsored Petworth Emigration project/website and
volunteering with OCAPG. Brenda is also the author of several award winning
books and Ask Olive Tree is honoured to have had her expertise in answering one
of my reader's questions.

Questions answered last week were

* Guest Genealogist Brenda Dougall Merriman Answers the Question Is a Crown
Patent worth Obtaining? (Answer for Jill)
* Searching an Elusive Ancestor in Ontario after 1929 (Answer for Adrian)
* What is the National Registration File of 1940 (Answer for Jason)
* Finding an English Birth Record in Bishop's Transcripts or other Records
(Answer for Vesta)
* Finding a Death at Sea (Answer for Terry)
* Answering Question about Photos of People on Postcards from England (Answer
for Diane)
* How to Create a Family History Book (Answer for Joan)
* How to Find Descendants of Ancestor's Siblings (Answer for Martin)
* Finding records in Kentucky pre 1800 (Answer for Linda)

Don't forget to send your challenging puzzlers to me at askolivetree@...
and I will do my best to answer them on AskOliveTree.blogspot.com

************************
I added graphics (examples of the forms) and the full list of questions asked on
the 1940 National Registration File for Men and Women in Canada. Two of the many
questions which may interest genealogists are about naturalization (if
naturalized, what year and where?) and immigration (if not born in Canada, when
did the person come to Canada?)

Copies of the orginal forms can be ordered for an ancestor and a link is
provided at http://naturalizationrecords.com/canada/

Also added an example of the form for women and a list of questions asked on the
1918 National Registration. Sadly the original forms have not been kept but
there may be certificates in existence in family papers.

Happy June 1st everyone!

It's been a pretty miserable cold weekend where I live and it is continuing

A treasure trove of First World War photographs was discovered recently in
France. Published here for the first time, they show British soldiers on their
way to the Somme. But who took them? And who were these Tommies marching off to
die? At least 400 glass photographic plates preserving the images were found in
the loft of a barn at Warloy-Baillon and cast out as rubbish. In recent months,
the plates, some in perfect condition, some badly damaged, have been lovingly
assembled and their images printed, scanned and digitally restored by two
Frenchmen.

Hi everyone

It's been awhile since I wrote this newsletter but I've had some glitches in my
computer setup. Right now I am working on a laptop with a very tiny screen! That
makes it difficult for me to see what I'm writing because of my Cogan's
Dystrophy (a condition of the cornea of the eye).

I won't have my usual 24" monitor for a few more days so I thought I better
struggle along as best I could to get this newsletter out today. The exciting
news about the complete Canadian census being online just won't wait any longer!
So please bear with me and forgive any typos I might make.

Here is what is happening in the genealogy community

Hi everyone,

Some big celebrations are coming up - We Canadians celebrate our Canada Day on
Wednesday July 1st and our American cousins are celebrating July4th this coming
weekend. Some of our local residents have already started their Canada
Celebrations with fireworks. A huge explosion of fireworks was set off quite
near us and the whole house shook, windows rattled, a most unsettling
experience.

On the homefront, I am now on High speed wireless thanks to Rogers Portable
Modem. Yay! After years of struggling on dialup which only reached max
connection of 32 kbps (on a good day) I now am whizzing along at 54Mbps! Thanks
to Rogers for developing something that works in rural areas like ours.

Here's what's new in the Genealogy World:

You have got to read my experiences ordering records from the National Archives
in Kew England. I wrote about it in two blog posts called Ordering Documents
from National Archives in Kew - a Comedy of Errors Part 1, and Part 2 at
http://olivetreegenealogy.blogspot.com/

I also provided readers with step by step instructions on how NOT to make the
same mistake(s) I did, complete with graphic shots showing how to search for,
find, then fill out and order documents for an ancestor. Believe me after
mistakenly ordering and receiving 864 documents I have learned from my mistake!

I also talked about Dealing with Transcription Errors in Census Records in
another blog post at
http://olivetreegenealogy.blogspot.com/2009/06/dealing-with-transcription-errors\
-in.html (or go to http://olivetreegenealogy.blogspot.com/ and look for that
speicific post) . After finding my PEER family misindexed as ROSS in a census
record online I thought I'd write about how hard it was to find them and how I
eventually accomplished this. Hopefully it will help someone find their missing
ancestor!

Don't miss my post featuring a little known database and resource called the
Pennsylvania Baggage Lists (for passengers to Pennsylvania) before 1820. It's

A few years ago I discovered a very interesting set of immigration records.
While searching New York records on microfilm, I stumbled on a set of Almshouse
Records which had the names of ships the Almshouse inmaates sailed on to America
(which included USA and Canada). Often the year of arrival was also given.
Continue reading Getting Immigration Information from Almshouse Records at

That's it for this issue of Olive Tree Genealogy newsletter! Happy hunting and
enjoy your upcoming celebrations if you live in Canada or USA.

Hello friends and followers of Olive Tree Genealogy.

We had a lovely family wedding last weekend when one of my beautiful nieces
married her boyfriend of 9 years. It was a fun time and I had a chance to talk
with many extended family members and catch up on old times.

Things got quite exciting in the genealogy community when a new social website
called GenealogyWise opened its doors. Bloggers and genealogists flocked to it
and in the first few days membership (free) soared. Thousands of genealogy
groups were established and passionate discussions began. At the time of this
writing there are

I set up several groups that you may be interested in having a look at. Some of
them are quite active and members are very busy helping one another!

GenealogyWise and then searching in the Groups area by name. There are many
other excellent groups that might interest you so be sure to look around!

Hello Everyone

It's been a busy month or more for me, and I'm sure most of you find summer just
as hectic. I've been very busy planning for a rather large family reunion and
gathering at my home this Saturday. I've been organizing and preparing for 6
weeks and now it's crunch time!

I managed to finish a McGinnis Family Book which I will have on display for
family members to look through and buy a copy if they want for themselves. This
particular book is a personal one for family only but I think they will love the
old photos in it!

It goes from my parents back along my dad's lines to my great-great-great
grandfather who came from Ireland to Ontario in 1832.

The reunion will have a Scavenger Hunt (it's ready to go but I'm trying to think
of some extra genealogy items or questions that can be included!), and lots of
fun games for kids and adults alike. So it's keeping me pretty busy getting all
this done in time for Saturday.

I hope everyone's had a chance to take advantage of Footnote's offer of free
access to the USA 1930 census for August. If you haven't had a chance, or have

Hello everyone,

I've been rather quiet lately due to some health issues. I spent quite a bit of
time in September going for medical tests - ultra sounds, CAT scans, blood work,
and more blood work. Results of all tests came in last week.

The doctors have booked me for surgery in early November so I am going to try to
catch up with my genealogy websites and blogs this month. But I also have to do
quite a bit of cooking to prepare meals for my hospital stay and for the 2 month
recovery period afterwards. Hubby is well-intentioned but not a cook. :-)

I am sure I will feel much better than I have in the last year, once the surgery
is over. I just want my readers to know why I might be quiet for awhile, or
falling behind in bringing genealogy data online.
