Hi Everyone

I've been very busy catching up after my trip to the Boston FGS
conference. It was a great experience and I enjoyed attending some
of the workshops and the Exhibitions by sellers. We drove so took
two weeks total to get there, attend the Conference, and come home.

Some of the latest items I've added to my websites since returning
are:

1. New additions to the collection of letters on Past Voices -
Letters Home.

2. New additions to the collection of 1860s and 1870s Photo Albums

Here are links to get to the newest data:

There are some gorgeous photos in these albums, and I am offering a
quality reproduction service so as to allow all descendants to have
copies of their ancestors photos. The tintypes are one-of-a-kind as
that was the nature of a tintype - it substituted an iron plate for
glass and is one of a kind. No copies could be made from a tintype.

More news re ships passenger lists -- Ancestors on Board is
coming soon!

http://www.ancestorsonboard.com/

1837online.com, in association with The National Archives,
is proud to present Ancestorsonboard, a new database
featuring BT27 Outward Passenger Lists for long-distance
voyages leaving the British Isles from 1890 to 1960.

With Ancestorsonboard, you can search for records of
individuals or groups of people leaving for destinations
including Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, South
Africa and USA - featuring ports such as Boston,
Philadelphia and New York.

ID a Soldier's Photo

Traditionally it was very common for soldiers to have their
photos taken in uniform before leaving for overseas
(England). Usually a soldier was given leave to go home
before being shipped overseas and that is often when these
photos were taken.

If he had brothers, or a father or son who also enlisted,
they would try to have a group photo taken. This was not
always possible, as leaves for individual soldiers might
not be in the same time period.

Many portrait studios such as Eatons, had template mats to
enclose the photo. These mats were pre-printed had spaces
to fill in the soldier's name, sometimes his unit plus
other details.

These mats were often brightly coloured with the words "For
King & Country" or "For Service in the Great War" (it
varied). Ornate frames could be purchased which had the
same wording. Sometimes there would be a Canadian Maple
Leaf at the top which 'stuck up' beyond the edge of the
frame

If there is no photographer mark on the photo (back or
front) there are clues that might help you determine a date
and place.

First Clue

Determine whether or not the soldier is in a Canadian or
British uniform. I realize you obtained his records from
the Canadian archives but both Canadian and British
uniforms were used by the CEF (Canadian Expeditionary
Force). Men were usually issued a Canadian uniform when
they enlisted, and they kept this for everything done in
Canada. After they arrived in England the Canadian uniform
would almost always be switched for a British one. (The
reason for this switch was that the British uniforms were
better quality and lasted longer)

Here are a few of the differences that might help you
determine if the uniform is Canadian or British:

--Canadian uniforms had 9 buttons on front (7 on the actual
front and 1 on each front pocket) but the British one had
fewer (I think 7 larger buttons total but am not positive
on the exact number) There is an exception to this - if the
soldier was in a Canadian Highland Regiment, his top
sometimes just had 7 large buttons

--Canadian uniforms had pointed cuffs, the British had
straight (horizontal)

--Canadian uniforms (except for the Highland ones) had
stand-up collars, British uniforms did not

Hello everyone,

I've got a lot of new items to tell you about today.

First great news: Ancestry is offering free access to their recently
updated online ship passenger lists and immigration records
collection from November 9-30, 2006. All you need to do is register,
no credit card is required. This includes their newly updated New
York passenger lists database, from 1820-1957. Ellis Island website
online only goes to 1924 so this is your chance to search for
elusive ancestors in that later time period.

Steve Morse has created one of his wonderful ONE STEP
search engines for this database. See http://www.stevemorse.org/

More ships passenger lists can be searched at
http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/

*~*~*~*~*~*~*
I've also added an online store and marketplace to Olive Tree
Genealogy! This has been quite exciting for me to start, and will
hopefully make it much easier for folks to purchase copies of my
books and articles, as well as other great items. See
http://olivetreegenealogy.com/store/genealogies.shtml

With some trusted partners, I've also added a section for a lookup
and reproduction service. Using one-of-a-kind ledgers and books from
the 1800s (some from the 1700s) we offer quality reproductions of
your ancestor's name wherever found in the books – including all
details of course!

Did your ancestor purchase shoes for his children in early 1900s?
Find out in the Shoemaker's Ledger Book 1897-1918. Was he involved
in a court case? Perhaps his name appears in the Docket Book of
William Petrikin 1831-1865. There are dozens of unique books to
choose from and all contain fascinating detail on ancestors. See
http://olivetreegenealogy.com/store/lookups.shtml

More genealogy items will be added to the store in the coming months
so keep watching the front door at
http://olivetreegenealogy.com/store/

*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Next news item of interest: Ancestry's 1851 index and images to the
Canadian census is free to search to Nov. 16th. See
http://allcensusrecords.com/canada/census-news.shtml

These are NOT free trials – no credit card is needed!

*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I've been hard at work on my different websites and have added new
data for you to search for ancestors. Remember all transcribed data
placed on Olive Tree Genealogy and its sister sites is free, just
take your time and look around. You can always visit my What's New
page to get direct links to the new data.

Hi everyone

I hope you are all getting a chance to visit family over the holiday
season.

My son, who is in the Canadian military, will be able to make it
home for a visit this year so I'm busy getting ready for that with
lots of cooking going on in my kitchen. There will be lots of
grandchildren here too, so we're looking forward to a nice visit.

It's a busy time of year for many but I wanted to give you a little
reminder of what's new on Olive Tree Genealogy and what great free
databases are being offered elsewhere.

Many of you have probably found lots of information online for at
least a few of your ancestors. But one of the burning questions is –
how accurate is this info? Can you trust it? Here's my answer to
that question –

I Found My Great Great Grandfather Online -- Now What!!???
(Verifying Records Found On Webpages)

You just found a church record for the marriage of your great great
grandfather, or the record of your 4th great grandparents on a
passenger list of a ship to the New World in 1777 - wow! But you
have questions - how accurate is this information? How can you
verify it?

All records have the potential for error once they have been
transcribed. This results in the possibility of culmination of
errors with each succeeding transcription. Deliberate altering of
the records (such as adding details the transcriber believes are
correct; changing the spelling of names etc) results in even more
possibility of corruption.

What's New on Olive Tree Genealogy & her sister sites

More Coffin Plates have gone online at Ancestors at Rest. This is a
really great database, growing daily, and the only place on the `net
gathering these unique items for you. Brian has graphics as well as
the text from each coffin plate – so take a peek, who knows, your
ancestor might be there!

http://www.ancestorsatrest.com/coffin_plates/

Brian also has a huge collection of Funeral and Mourning cards
online at

http://www.ancestorsatrest.com/funeral_cards/

Submissions are always welcome, just email Brian at
ancestorsatrest@... with the picture of your coffin plate
or funeral card and he'll put it online.

What's New (and FREE) on other sites:

Ancestry extended the FREE access to their recently updated online
ship passenger lists and immigration records collection. You can
search for free for the rest of December

All you need to do is register, no credit card is required. This
includes their newly updated New York passenger lists database, from
1820-1957. Ellis Island website online only goes to 1924 so this is
your chance to search for elusive ancestors in that later time
period.

To get there, just go to http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/ and
click on the graphic on the left hand side bar.

Steve Morse has also created one of his wonderful ONE STEP search
engines for this database. See http://www.stevemorse.org/

If you're into buying genealogy related gifts for Christmas and
looking for something a little different, Ancestry is offering 40%
off their Canadian Deluxe subscription. It includes American records
so take a look by going to
http://olivetreegenealogy.com/index1.shtml and clicking on the
graphic top left.

This is a short newsletter, I have to get back to my attempts to
create a sweet potato-parsnip-goat's milk cheese-asparagus pie! My
husband loves every one I've made so far, but none of them is
exactly what I have in mind. I haven't been able to find a recipe
(except for sweet potato pie which is not what I want) so I'm having
fun inventing my own. It's a little frustrating though so if anyone
knows of a recipe please write to me at olivetreegenealogy@...

Happy Holidays and hope you find many ancestors in 2007!

Hello everyone,

I hope your February is not as cold and snowy as mine. :-) To take
my mind off the constant blizzards we've been having, I've been
working hard on my websites.

I've put a few new passenger lists online this month:

The Bristol Factor December 15, 1681, England to Pennsylvania
The Bristol Factor October 1682, England to Pennsylvania
The Lamb October 22, 1682, John Tench, master, one of Penn's fleet
England to Pennsylvania
The Jeffries ( Jeffrey) 1st month, 20, 1686 England to Pennsylvania
The Amity August 8, 1682, arrived at Upland, Richard Dymond, master
England to Pennsylvania
The Bristol Merchant 12th month, 1682/3 England to Pennsylvania

Ports of Arrival 1819-1844

This is really an interesting database. I'm still trying to finish
it (14 more years to go!). When done I plan to organize the data by
port of arrival, ship name, and so on. I hope you find an ancestor
here. Countries of departure include Canada, England, Ireland....

Hello everyone

Being stuck in blizzard conditions for most of the week allowed me
to do some upgrades and maintainance work on several of my sites.

I thought it was very interesting to get an exact count of the
number of pages on Olive Tree Genealogy - 2,322! No wonder I
sometimes forget what databases I have for visitors.....

****************

One of the interesting databases I recently uploaded was for
Quarantine Hospital Staten Island 1849 - 1850. It is a List of those
who died while in Staten Island Quarantine May 1849 - Dec. 1850

It's on my sister site at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/orphans/staten-island-quarantine-
cemetery1849-1850.htm

That's a really long URL. If it wraps in this newsletter, just go to
http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/orphans/ and click on the link for
Staten Island Quarantine Hospital

Or go to the list of March free databases at
http://olivetreegenealogy.com/free0307.shtml

****************

I also played catch-up and tried to finish the Missouri Newspaper
transcripts. I didn't finish, but I did manage to upload Jefferson
Democrat Newspaper Transcripts for January to August 1882, August
1883, October 1883, July 1884, August 1884, September 1884

http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/usa_genealogy/mo_newspaper.htm

****************

I thought I'd feature some of my databases that I'd forgotten I had!
Maybe vistors forget too :-)

So, let's start in this newsletter with databases I have online for
New Jersey at http://olivetreegenealogy.com/usa/nj/index.shtml

Upper Canada Land Petitions - Finding an Ancestor

Upper Canada Land Petitions are the actual Petitions for
land which were submitted in Upper Canada (Ontario).

View an actual 1797 UCLP (Upper Canada Land Petition) at
http://olivetreegenealogy.blogspot.com/2007/03/upper-canada-
land-petitions-finding.html

In the petition, the petitioner gives his father's name,
the date he (and his father) arrived in Upper Canada
(Ontario) and specifics of his family (wife and children).
He requests land, and the outside of the folded petition
reveals if that request was granted (a land grant) and
under what terms.

See Upper Canada Land Petition for more help with this
important genealogical research tool.

Land Records in Ontario - Using the CLRI

Land records are very useful. Originally all land in
Ontario belonged to the Crown. Although there were small
areas of settlement in 1763 after the British took over,
major settlement of Upper Canada began in 1783 and utilized
Crown Grants. See Ontario Land Records for more
helphttp://olivetreegenealogy.com/can/ont/land.shtml

The CLRI (aka Ontario Land Record Index) is an index which
summarizes land grants from sales of of Crown Land in
Ontario, from Canada Company sales and leases, and from
Peter Robinson settlers' grants. It provides invaluable
clues for further research!

Find out how to obtain the CLRI and how to interpret your
findings at Olive Tree Genealogy CLRI Section

Fiske Family Civil War era Photo Album

One of my hobbies is buying old (Civil War era) Photo
Albums and photos. I like to figure out who the family
members are, do some genealogy research on them and then
put the albums online. It's an expensive hobby but I love
it.

A few days ago I had a nice surprise. A gentleman from New
Hampshire (unknown to me) sent me a gift of an old Civl War
album of the Fiske family in New England. There were only
13 pictures and the photo pages were torn but the photos
themselves were in good condition and labelled with names.

I spent a few hours doing some research and discovered that
the photos all have some relationship to the children of
David Fiske and Laura Severington. My research and the
photos (not thumbnails, the full size photos) are all
online now for descendants to enjoy.

The series on passports and identity papers contains about
11,400 files of Jewish, Ukrainian and Finnish immigrants
who came to Canada from the Russian Empire.

The series includes passport applications and
questionnaires containing general information and is

All "passenger lists" for travel from The Netherlands to
New Netherland 1654-1664 came from information on the debit
side of the West India Company Account Book. They show who
owed money when they arrived. Those who paid ahead for
passage were not recorded so their names do not appear on
ships lists

Just wanted to let everyone know that Ancestry.com has
added the Canadian Border Crossing Records containing more
than 4 million names of individuals who crossed the U.S.-
Canadian border between 1895 and 1956.

In 1895 Canada and USA established a joint inspection
system. Passengers arriving in Canada who intended to go
on to United States were inspected by US Officials at the
Canadian Port of Arrival, then enumerated on US
immigration lists. Immigrants were also given inspection
cards which they turned in to US Officials once they were
on board trains going to United States. Two sets of records
were created - passenger lists and compiled inspection
cards.

These CANADIAN BORDER CROSSING records were microfilmed by
INS. They cover 1895-1954 and are indexed. They do NOT
include Canadians before 1906. After September 30, 1906
both Canadians and non-Canadians are included on these
lists.

More information and a link to the online database the St
Albans (Canadian Border Crossing) Lists is found on Olive
Tree Genealogy at

http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/stalbanslist.shtml

I've already found lots of family members :-)

Hello everyone

The list of ongoing new data added to Olive Tree Genealogy
and its sister sites is at
http://olivetreegenealogy.com/free0507.shtml

Two very interesting databases have recently been added -
one is the Voyage of Ship Gelderland 1 September 1640 to 12
November 1641 from Texel to Morocco back to Texel

This is the Journal of the Ambassy of the Lord Anthonis de
Liedekerke , translated and transcribed by my good friend
Cor Snabel & Liz Johnson

On the 1st of September 1640, the ship Gelderlandt sailed
from Texel on a diplomatic mission to the King of Morocco.
On board were the Dutch Ambassador Anthonie de Liedekerke,
Lijsbeth Jans with her brother-in-law Jacob Arissen, and
the painter Adriaen Matham.

The 1640-41 diplomatic mission to Morocco was made in order
to renew the Dutch alliance with Morocco, and to effect the
release of some fifty men who had been employed aboard the
ship Erasmus van Rotterdam.

Cor also kindly transcribed the list of Released Prisoners
on the ship Erasmus van Rotterdam 1638 and that is online
too.

Also added to Olive Tree Genealogy is the Milwaukee County
Almshouse & Poor Farm Cemeteries Wisconsin List of Burials
for 1872-1892, 1914-1934, 1935-1955, 1956-1974

Links to all of these records are on the URL above.

Enjoy!

section so you may see some changes when you visit. I'm
reorganizing the lists and trying to make getting around
the site easier for you.

Here's the latest news:

Subject: Ancestor Cards for Children - Great Idea!
olivetreegen...
Send Email Send Email

Hello everyone,

Recently I've been mulling over how to present the
genealogy I've done on our family so that it would grab my
9 year old grandson's attention. My good friend Illya of
Genealogy Today suggested I use a baseball or hockey card
format with one ancestor per card.

I loved the idea and created cards 6 cm x 9 cm. Each card
features one ancestor's picture or a picture representing
that ancestor. The back of each card has ancestor stats -
their relationship to my grandchildren, date and place of
birth, date and place of death, spouse's name, parents'
names and a tiny blurb about that person (hopefully
something unique or of interest to an 9 year old!)

After laminating the cards, I presented them to my grandson
and granddaughter (who is 7) when they came for their
annual summer week long holiday with us. They loved them
and not only read every bit of information about each
ancestor, they began figuring out who was the oldest
ancestor.... who died at the oldest age... who died at the
youngest age... which parents went with which ancestor..
and so on. (math and genealogy combined - what could be
better?)

Then they decided to play a game, which we called simply
"Ancestor Game". They each chose an ancestor card and
played it, with whoever had the furthest back ancestor
winning both cards. The next day they begged me to make
more cards!! I now have 48 cards made for them with many
more to go. To add even more interest I also created cards
that were not direct ancestors, but had some small claim to
fame or something historical or interesting to a child.
Thank goodness for FTM which tells me if a person is a 3rd
cousin 5x removed or something else!

We decided I should also make double cards wherever
possible, that is, two cards for one ancestor but with
different photos or representative pictures on each one.
Then they can play "Go Fish for Ancestors".

I thought I'd like to share this in case you are looking
for something to capture your little one's interest,
because it was fabulous and my grandchildren loved it!

If you want to see some photos of what we created, just go

"Ancestor Cards for Children"

Hi everyone

We're part way through August and I don't know where July
went! I was away for a few days on holiday so that ate up
part of July but the rest has zoomed by.

Footnote.com website and I have been talking about offering
genealogists a special discount for memberships. I'm happy
to announce that from today through til August 14th you can
get $10.00 off a year's membership by using a special link
on OliveTreeGenealogy.com websites.

Footnote is digitizing NARA records and they have a lot of
great data online. There is much more to Footnote than just
NARA records, so if you haven't visited, you really should.

The first time I explored their website I found an
ancestor's brother in the NARA naturalization records so I
was pretty thrilled.

You can start your journey at
http://olivetreegenealogy.com/index1.shtml

Look for the text "SPECIAL OFFER August 8-14 on Olive Tree
Genealogy $10.00 off on Footnote.com Membership Includes
NARA records!" and click on the special link provided.

Enjoy!
