RocketEngineer.bravehost.com and ARA Press announce that the final drafts are
completed to Rocket Science. The 910 page book by Dave Ketchledge is endorsed by
The Space Show and readers have been impressed by the depth and detail of the
CD/ Book. Propulsion, Aerodynamics , Structural Design, High Power and R/C are a
few of the topics along with Orbital Mechanics with space sim software to fly
the X-15, X-20 Dyna Soar, Apollo and Gimini spoacecraft. The additional NASA
reports cover Solid, Liquid and Nuclear rocket engines. The book is on the
cutting edge with a copy of the Augustine Commission report and commentary on
its impacts on NASA's future programs. Those at NARAM saw the early release from
ARA Press and many showed an interest. Get to know all the skills oif flight
mechanics and guidance control in this referance that is good today and into the
future.

I have had some success with the high heat engine paint under some aluminum
tape. (the type used to wrap furnace ducting) Also have used the tape to
protect exposed surfaces of B and C boost gliders.

Those type's of paint are good but, Lows sell a paint that can withstand
   temps of 1200 degrees +.
It's a paint that is used to refinish grills and other high temp fixtures.
It also wont flake off under high heat like some other paints out there.
Not sure what colors it comes in. I know they have black, red, silver and if
   I recall white.

I remember buying a small bottle of it from Estes the first year I started
   rocketry.

I want to shield two strap on boosters of a 1st stge cluster that extend
(to hold recovery devices) beyond the 2nd stage.

1st stage - 3 side by side engines - centered booster - 2 sides delayed
   2nd stage - 1 engine - centered - delayed

I find the pictures of the solid booster augmented Saturn V depressing. Just
think of where we could be if we would have continued to pursue space with
4x Titian IV boosters strapped to a Saturn V. We could have put the entire
damn ISS into orbit with one launch. Thirty years ago. Can you imagine the
possibilities? The entire Silicon Valley grew out of the initial Saturn
development cycle; where would we be now? What else have we missed by
denying science and engineering room to grow and expand?

Forgive the blatant commercialism, but I've got a few interesting holiday things
going on at the web site.

I now have three "Let's Do Launch" packages that make good gift sets to get
someone started in rocketry. They all include a FullBoost 12 volt ignition
system that comes with batteries installed, and a Quest Liftoff Launch Pad, so
you have equipment to launch just about anything in the future.

Guys, are you as clueless as I am when it comes to finding a gift for your
Significant Other? This year I got some professional help. I consulted the wife
of an old friend, who is also an Avon representative, and she put together some
gift packages designed to improve your domestic tranquility.

Finally, I am giving out a few gifts of my own, something that means a lot to
me. When I was a kid I was inspired by the old TV show THUNDERBIRDS. A splendid
new series of novels based on THUNDERBIRDS is now being published. I'm giving
copies away with gift orders. All you have to do is tell me that what you're
ordering is a gift when you check out, and I'll include a free book.

Yeah, I noticed they have some at $9.99 in their clearance section that are
NiCd.

Does anyone know where I can get new recharge batteries for the Estes Pro
Launcher? The ones I have can't be charged anymore and Radio Shack does not
have them anymore.

I was the first MESS committee chairman back in 1970 as part of the Standards
and Testing committee. If MESS forms are submitted and there is a trend, S&T
has a point to bring up with the manufacturer. As has been mentioned, these
motors may be in the supply line for years before being flown.

One thing we can do is to record the motor code prior to flying (if the motor is
to be ejected in sports flying) or after if there is concern about an over
energetic ejection. Then the rest of us can see if we have any of the offending
batch and can be very, very careful how we fly them.

Good question, and, unfortunately, I haven't logged any data, although I've had
several of these grenades wreck my gliders. In my defense, the motors usually
get spit out and aren't always readily recoverable.

In addition to the blow holes, I try to sand the edges off the ends of the
motors so they slide out easily. Also, keep the motor tube sanded clean as well.

This issue was elevated with one of Estes' engineers a while back, and he had
never heard of it, so apparently, there hasn't been much feedback given to them.
But I know that several here on this forum have had rockets get trashed.

I think this all started ~7 years ago. Motors can stay in the supply chain a
long time, so consumers can have seemingly new motors that are actually several
years old. Thus, a problem like this can linger for years.

This is a good example of when the MESS process could really benefit us. These
are not just a few isolated incidents.

Sometimes the folks who need to know are the last to find out.

Doug

Hey, Art Nestor here. I've spent some time recently with Irv Wait documenting
his accomplishments to our hobby & Rocket Development Corp. for the NAR Digital
Archives.

I'd like to know if anyone here in the Old Rockets community flew any of his
kits and took photos, had any correspondance with Irv "back in the day" or just
had anything in general to say or contribute to the Archives on Irv or RDC. What
have you, but I'm not looking for catalogs. Anyone ever fly the Feather or Nova
III?

Thanks,
Art

Hot ejections on mini motors have been around a LOT longer than 7 years. Maybe
27 years. Maybe more.

What is the deal with the ejection charges on 1/2A engines these days? I've had
one rocket and three gliders badly damaged by the ejection charges, even with
blow holes. I swear the engines were assembled upside down with the engine part
on top. Is there any way to identify these bad engines by batch number or

I think you could try either durams or plaster of paris. Spray a little Pam in
the wraps before making the mold. Wipe off any extra.
