Re: [OWFI-Group] Does anyone have an agent? Need advice!

Excellent question about agents.

Be very wary.  I was part of an investigation about a decade ago for the NY Attorney General and was shocked to see how many scam artists masquerade as agents.

My article about my experience is on the web.  Google my name and Edit Ink or Writer Beware.  It's on www.sfwa.org's website, but I don't have the link memorized.

An agent that is a member of AAR has received the blessing of "the" organization for agents.

However, there are plenty of perfectly legitimate agents who are not members for their own reasons.

Hi everyone-

I'm a member of Tulsa NightWriters and, of course, OWFI for the past year. I read posts, but have never actually posted myself --which I guess makes me more of a 'lurker'! So far, I've written nonfiction articles for Oklahoma Magazine and had one short story published in Distinctly Oklahoma.

Anyhow...
I would really like to hear from individuals that have an agent as I'm a relative greenhorn and need all the advice I can get! I signed with a screenwriting agent this past spring, and summarily sent out three treatments. However, I have heard very little from him in terms of keeping me updated on efforts to sell my work, or anything else. So my question is:

Is this normal?
What should I, in all fairness, expect from an agent?

Thanks for any input!

Paula

Paula… Agents are like dreams. Some are good and some are nightmares. Plus, getting a screenplay sold is double tough. So much of it is “who you know”...

Writerbeware.com is an excellent source. I agree with the advice that having the AAR credential is a good indicator. There was another site that Writersmarket...
