It's really annoying isn't it... is it possible to e-mail a site
manager to ask them to remove these messages? It happens another
(MSN) group that I belong to as well. That group is well moderated
and the editors DO remove this sort of mail.

Subject: Anne Evans at the Proms

I was lucky enough to be able to see what was probably Anne Evans
farewll performance at Tuesday night's prom. The programme was all
Strauss. Die Liebe der Danae, Daphne and excerpts from Rosencavalier
including the opening scene between the Marschallin & Octavian
followed by the Marschallin's monologue, then the presentation of the
rose and finally the trio and duet between Sophie & Octavian. It was
sheer magic though I was very high in the front row of the circle
(have a look at the Albert Hall site to see). The other singers were
Rebecca Evans and Katerina Karneus both completely wonderful, the
tone that Katerina Karneus can produce is astounding and she was a
very convincing Octavian.
It brought back strong memories for me. Years ago a friend & I did
the presentation of the rose at a workshop run by the group that we
both belonged to and 10 years ago in the last concert I was able to
do I was Sophie in trio and duet. It was the achievement of a life-
time ambition.

Hello Operalmanac, I just discovered this site, and am very thrilled to have an
outlet for my questions.

First of all, does anyone know of a recording of Paul Dukas' Ariane et Barbe-
bleue? I understand that, like Bartok's, the staging is pretty dry, but the
music
is extraordinary.

Did anyone get to see James Conlon's production of Viktor Ullmann's The
Emperor of Atlantis over the summer? What I could read sounded good.

And lastly, Antonina Nezhdanova was a fairly influencial teacher in Moscow,
but I cannot find the names of any of her students - any ideas of where I might
look? Thankyou, Robert

Friends,

Can anyone tell me who was the wife of the tenor Francesco Albanese?
Supposedly, she was considered, during her very short career, to be a
"Tebaldi seconda."

I have been creating my own Collections of legendary singers both
modern and historical from excerpts gathered from various sources. I
also have a very comprehensive catalogue of all my music and am
lacking some details on some excerpts I have collected. If any
members can help I would very much appreciate answers to the
following:-
1. What is the name of the aria from "Rienzi" recorded by Jacques
Urlus in 1911?
2. What is the name of the aria from "Mefistofele" recorded by
Marcel Journet, year unknown?
3. Which opera by Reyer contains the aria "O palais radieux"?
4. In the 1927 recording of the Love Duet from Faust by Florence
Easton, who is the tenor?
5. Rose Pauly recorded an excerpts from "Die Aegyptische Helena",
year unknown. Does this excerpt have a name? e.g. I have recording
by Leontyne Price which is designated as the Awakening Scene.
6. Which of Rossini's operas contains the aria "Tu non sai"?
7. Which Rossini Opera contains the quartet "Mi manca la voce"?
   Regards to all,
    John.

Dear Tom,
Many, many thanks for your response to my message. I had not
considered someone like Mario Chamlee as the tenor with Easton and
must say it is a thrill to know that I now have him represented in
my collection. I also did not think to check the libretto of my
complete "Bianca e Falliero" for the aria "Tu non sai qual colpe
atroce". And as for the Rose pauly Die Aegyptische Helena", her
German is so bad that it wasn't until I followed her rendition from
the libretto sheet from my Leontyne Price version on LP that I cold
recognise it as one and the same. However two of my queries remain
unanswered.
I did check the libretto of my "Mose in Egitto" and in that "Mi
manca la voce Mi sento morire" is sung as part of a QUINTET by
Anaia, Sinais and Miriam while Moses and Eliezer sing "Lor toglie la
voce La piena dell'ire". As a QUARTET on my copy of the Opera Rara
Collection, Vol.2, the characters are Elcia, Osiride, Amaltea and
Aronne. It would therefore seem that as he did so often with numbers
from his less successful operas, Rossini believed it deserved far
greater exposure and used it again in another opera.
As far as I can make out, the Marcel Journet "Mefistofele"
excerpt is sung in French and although I am not overly familiar with
the whole work I do know that what he is singing bears no
resemblance to the "Ave Signor" as I know it, certainly not the
start of the aria.
Do you have any idea where I might search further for these two
answers? Many thanks again,
    John.

John
The characters Elcia, Osiride et al are again from Moise/ Mose/ Mose in Egitto/
Moise et Pharaon, all variants of the same opera on the theme of Moses and the
exodus, by Rossini (French and Italian versions etc). Therefore, your quintet
is sometimes a quartet, depending on the edition employed. I leave it to Philip
Gossett to sort all these variants out!

According to my sources, the only other excerpt from Mefistofele that Journet
ever recorded was Son lo spirito che nega (Je suis l'esprit qui nie...). He
also did record excerpts from Boito's opera Nerone. Are you certain that it is
from Mefistofele?

Robert R. Calder here:

I must check my Journets, but half of them are in another country and
inaccessible. There might be something on a website devoted to
basses / the bass voice, which included Journet, Kastorsky and any
bass most bass-loving people could think of .. but when the previous
computer went down it went down even deeper than Malcolm MacEachern
and is irretrievable by me...

Can anyone help with the e-address of the bass site?

Incidentally, I have a beautiful 78 of T.F. Kinniburgh singing a
couple of Scottish songs very beautifully, he worked in a Glasgow
shipyard with the father of my sometime vocal mentor the poet Tom
Scott (1918-1995) but left to turn full-time. Beecham used to visit a
Glasgow music hall to audition shipyard workers and I have
interesting memories of a fiddler whom I met when he came back to
Glasgow with the ENO Ring 25 years ago. Kinniburgh anyway went full
time and was briefly represented during the short life of a pre-CD
era label called Sunday Opera.

I actually have a photograph of Kinniburgh as part of a St. Andrews
Day concert in The Royal Albert Hall, London (I can't presently dig
it out to provide the date but it was more than 90 years ago as I
recall (recall the poster, that is!).

I've also a couple of privately recorded discs, one by a youthful
William McCue (a recorded Bartolo with Barenboim and longtime
principal bass with Scottish Opera -- he died shockingly suddenly
just a little less than two years ago); and another by my late
father's old schoolmate Harry Blackburn, Hunding in that ENO Ring in
Glasgow, also recorded at Biggar's Studio in Glasgow. Just in case
anybody's interested and sees these items as important. I should
point out that I also have some lovely alas all too hissy 78s of the
wonderful Robert Radford, with an especially interesting piano
accompaniment to M**ssorgski's SONG OF THE FLEA. Presumably the bass
site proprietor has rather more!
