As many of you know, electronic voting is a subject I've been studying for
some time now. Please consider signing this petition from
MoveOn.org. Every bit of attention we can bring to this frightening
subject will help. For those interested in a more in-depth analysis of the
subject, please see my article at

EMERGENCY CALL FOR PETITIONERS FOR IL GREEN PARTY BALLOT DRIVE

This is an emergency call for petitioners from the Illinois Green
Party. We need your help today!

We need 40,000 signatures for Illinois by June 21 to be handed in to
us by June 17th at the latest.

We are petitioning for our Presidential, Vice-Presidential and U.S.
Senate candidates. Our Presidential candidate will either be Ralph
Nader or David Cobb, to be decided at our national convention in late
June. Our U.S. Senate candidate is Scott Summers, the only candidate
who supports equal marriage for gays and lesbians and the only
candidate calling for full employment at a living wage.

We now have 4,000 signatures. We have volunteers coming from
Wisconsin, Iowa and Michigan to help. But, we need your help! If we
can get 200 people to collect 200 signatures in the 14 days that we
have left, we can overcome the corporate parties' repressive laws.

200 signatures can be collected in four to six hours at a good
location. But, we need all of you to come out, to call your friends,
to get them to come out for these last two weeks. We can do it-

We can bring the burning necessity of alternative modes of
transportation to save our planet from global climate catastrophe to
the state and national level,

We can force the issue of full employment at a real living wage at
the state and national level,

We can force the issue of universal health care at the state and
national level,

We can force the issue of ending the occupation of Iraq, Palestine
and Afghanistan,

But only if you help us put our Green candidates on the ballot. Only
then will our movements really be visible. Only then will the people
of Illinois and the U.S. have a real independent institutional
alternative to the parties of war and death.

We will supply you with petitions and other materials. If you can
bring clipboards it would help us out. Please call the contacts
below to let us know how much material to bring. Above all, come,
and forward this email to everyone you know! Call your friends!

I apologize for posting here for the first time on such a partisan
topic. But, this issue I feel is so important that the majority of
your members, the state and beyond has an interest in this ballot
drive. I have a more detailed list of places that I can also
forward, so please let me know if you would like this also. Thank
you, and may we all make a real contribution to forwarding the issues
that will help save the planet, in the coming months.

of Jackson.

Refuse & Resist! will be getting out information about the upcoming
demonstrations at the Republican National Convention. We will be using a little
guerrilla theater to help get people's attention. We want everyone to be
challenged to be in New York on August 29th. The RNC will be a historic chance
to show the world that millions in this country are saying NO to Bush and all he
represents.

We are inviting everyone to join us. All are welcome to help get out the RNC
leaflet and help with our theater. or Bring your own leaflets or theater and
meet us at 1:00 pm.The more people we have, the more of a scene we can create
and the more people we will talk to.

This is not a demonstration. This is an important outreach opportunity. We will
be bringing a little Guantanamo Bay to Grant Park. Some of our R&R! folks will
be dressed in black hood and orange jump suits to remind everyone what the
"democracy" the US is bringing to Iraq and the rest of the world really looks
like.

I am sending this to lists and people that have asked me about the status of my
campaign and wondering what is happening and that status of challenge and other
organization, and so on.

First, I need to really apologize for not keeping people more in touch. As some
of you may know I am working with the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition and our annual
conference is being held June 26th - July 1st 2004. The problem with working a
job you love is love the work that you are doing and that is the situation here.
I'd foresee the really time demand in putting together such a huge project.
While my part is relative small the impact is great.

The two workshops that I have been mainly responsible for coordinating are the
panels on HIV and African American Women and Advocating for Justice in the
Community, Boardroom, and the Legal Profession. Let me take a moment to share
with you a bit about these tow workshops and the conference as a whole. I would
like to encourage people to attend these events as will as the whole conference
which will be held at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel & Towers at 301 East North
Water Street in Chicago.

The first workshop that I have put together will be Monday June 28th, 2004 after
the Woman's Luncheon chaired by Rev. Willie Barrow and will be African American
Women and HIV/AIDS and will be held 2:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. and will feature Mr.
J.L.King the author and researcher of the "Down-Low Brothers". The other
panelist will include Ms. Dean Taylor the Director of Women Services for the
Cook County Core Center , Dr. Lorraine Cole, Executive Director National Black
Women's Health Imperative, Ms. Ida Byther-Smith AIDS Educator & Motivational
Speaker. This workshop will share the alarming information related to the
systemic contributing factors for the fastest growing population of newly
infected HIV/AIDS incidents with African American women. This is promises to be
one of the most heavily attended workshops.

The second workshop that I've will be held Tuesday, June 29th , 2004 at 10:00
a.m. - 12:00 p.m. The title Advocating for Justice in the Community, the
Boardroom, and Legal Profession. (This is being nick-named the "D" connection
workshop since three of the four panelist come from Detroit and I'm originally
form Detroit) This workshop will be moderated by Janice Mathis the Director of
the Rainbow/Push Peachtree Project in Atlanta. The panel will feature a keynote
address from Hon. Dennis Archer the President of the American Bar Association.
Dennis is the first African American to serve the ABA President. The panel will
include remarks Congressman John Conyers of Michigan with remarks from Judge
Greg Mathis. This workshop in addition to addressing civil liberties and the
pending legislation that will impact how non-profit operate, but the lack of
business opportunities for people of color in the legal profession as will as
pay equality.

Finally I have put together a workshop for young people on youth day called
Sista to Sista, Boys to Men this will be a frank discussion on sexual
transmitted diseases and issues of importance to youth between 10 - 17. This is
being conducted Dr, Lisa Henry-Reid Director of Adolescent Care John Stroger
County Hospital.

In addition to these workshops the conference will be filled with lots of
opportunities and conversations, including Dr. Bill Cosby, Gov. Howard Dean,
Senator John Kerry and many more. There will be a political leadership summit on
Sunday, June 27th at 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. chaired by Congressman Jesse
Jackson, Jr. and U.S. Senate Candidate Barrack Obama all are invited.

Some of you are former members, supporters, and friends of the Rainbow/PUSH
Coalition and/or Rev. Jesse Jackson, Sr. on Saturday June 26th at 2:00 p.m. at
the headquarters of RPC Rev. Jackson would like to invite everyone to a "Reunion
Bar-B-Que at 930 East 50th Street.

If you would like to register for the conference just give me a call at RPC at
773-256-2798 or you may feel free to attend any of the events I've mention or
others that interest you.

Now about the campaign. We are moving but as you can tell I've been somewhat
distracted yet still on track. The following are campaign position that have
been filled:

Campaign Treasurer Sydney Ward, Campaign Scheduler Bob Rudner, Media Contact
Lionel Trapiner, Email listing coordinator Jan , Candidate Assistant Carol
English.

Three position we really need people to assist with are Volunteer Coordinator,
Fundraising Coordinator, and General Coordinator.

We will be scheduling the next meeting to plan the campaign public announcement
and literature is being developed. If you would like to participate in 14th
District Green Representative Campaign please call me at 312-933-7087 or Carol
English at 773-338-4922 or Lionel Trappiner at 312-593-0996. Please do not call
Rainbow/PUSH Coalition in regards to this campaign. Rainbow/PUSH is not a
political organization and does not conduct campaigns.

As far as the challenge two-thirds of the objections have been dismissed by the
Chicago Board of Elections Hearing officer who happens to be Republican Joe
Morris. The last comment that he made to the objectors attorney Dan
Johnston-Wienbruger was that he (Weinbruger) had "quite a row to hoe with
proving his claims" at the last hearing another status date was set for this
coming Thursday at 10:00 a.m. which will be a status hearing. I present
residency evidence at the last hearing that date not just two years ago, but
three years ago. In addition I presented the Flores et al v. Chicago Board of
Election which states " Two -year residency requirement is not the least
restrictive way to advance the states's interest, since this interest is
adequately advanced by a one-year residency requirement." The actual hearing
will be interesting in serving several interest of ours. The first and main will
be an open opportunity to put this residence question aside, but more then that
we will be
able to openly discuss many of the lurking questions that misguided "self
unidentified" Greens have been slinging mud about me. In fact in this hearing we
will wash away the mud and see the real dirt.

Thanks to everyone for their comments of support and hope to work with you in
either the campaign or at least see you at some or the whole 33rd annual
Rainbow/PUSH conference.

DuPage County Peace Rally on June 27

On June 27, from 2:00-3:30 PM, DuPage County peace activists will hold a
rally. The rally will be in front of the Pickwick Place shopping center,
680 Roosevelt Road, in Glen Ellyn.

They are urging others to join them with signs and banners calling on
motorists to "honk for peace" in support of ending the U.S. occupation
of Iraq and bringing the U.S. troops home now.

This action is part of a weekend of nationwide protests of the Bush Iraq
policy on June 26 and 27, just days before the U.S. says it will hand
sovereignty of Iraq to a UN chosen administration.

A coalition of 42 national organizations, making up the country's
largest anti-war organization, are calling for a specific date for
withdrawing all American troops from Iraq. The weekend action is being
organized nationally by Win Without War members, MoveOn.org, the
Internet based organization TrueMajority, and the United for Peace and
Justice Coalition, with the support of locally based peace groups such
as the DuPage Peace Through Justice Coalition.

"U.S. actions in Iraq are squandering precious lives, national treasure
and international support," said former Congressman Tom Andrews (D-ME),
National Director of Win Without War. "The prisoner abuse scandal has
shamed America and increased the danger to U.S. troops. The occupation
is shattering hopes for genuine Iraqi freedom and undermining U.S. and
international security."

Peace activists reject the argument that the U.S. cannot withdraw from a
costly, bloody occupation that was wrong from the beginning. They say
that "staying the course" will only doom more U.S. troops and innocent
Iraqis to die in an unjust war.

According to some estimates, as of June 14, the war in Iraq has cost the
United States over $117 billion (see http://costofwar.com/). Peace
activists say that money would have been better spent on jobs,
education, healthcare, housing, and other human needs.

PLEASE FORWARD WIDELY

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Counter-Recruiting at the Taste of Chicago: June 25 - July 4

As part of the summer of resistance Students for Social Justice is calling for
leafleting, guerrilla theater and other types of counter-recruitment efforts in
an attempt to save lives and bring the gears of the war machine to a grinding
halt. Following this email is the full schedule of remaining major
counter-recruiting events occurring this summer. To get involved, obtain more
information and resources, or to let us know about other opportunities not
listed on our calendar, please contact s4sj@....

From June 25 to July 4 several branches of the U.S. armed forces will descend
upon Grant Park and the Taste of Chicago in an all out recruiting blitz. In
it's relentless quest for global hegemony the United States continues to
overextend itself politically, economically and militarily. With more than
330,000 troops deployed overseas in nearly 130 countries, with the occupations
of Iraq and Afghanistan exacting a heavy toll on these already strained
resources, and with several of the armed forces missing their recruiting goals
in recent years, the military must continually find ways to replenish it's ever
depleting ranks of enlisted personnel. The flip side to this equation is that
the U.S. military is becoming more visible, creative and proactive in their
efforts to recruit the nation's youth into a life of servitude, exploitation and
eventual use as cannon fodder for future wars of aggression.

For the sake of our sisters and brothers everywhere we CANNOT allow that to
happen!

Military recruiters, media, government and schools go to great lengths to
romanticize war and glorify military hardware such as assault rifles, land
mines, tanks, armed helicopters and so-called "smart" targeting systems. War
should be recognized for the horror and devastation that it is, not as fun and
games, a way out, a means to obtain money for education, or just a job. If the
message of these recruiters is in any way received by the youth of our
communities as an endorsement of aggression and a celebration of a "might is
right" philosophy, then a gross educational failure has occurred on our part as
activists, concerned individuals, parents, friends, etc.

Now is the time to speak out. Now is the time to counter the false and
misleading propaganda put out by military recruiters in their attempts to
PACKAGE, MARKET & SELL the military to the nation's youth. Now is the time to
provide our youth with viable alternatives to obtain college funding and job
skills training. Now is the time to demonstrate solidarity with the people of
the world that are being oppressed, tortured and slaughtered at the hands of the
U.S. Armed Forces, not to mention with those who now reside in the U.S. that
have witnessed and/or been subjected to these very same atrocities by the U.S.
military and the regimes they support. Also keep in mind that there is an
increasing likelihood that the U.S. government will reinstate the draft sometime
during the course of the next year. It is imperative that we begin talking with
people NOW about draft resistance and a good way to begin is by exposing the
military for what it is.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GET INVOLVED! EXPOSE THE LIES! MAKE A DIFFERENCE! SAVE LIVES!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

Taste of Chicago June 25-July 4, 2004 Grant Park There are multiple entrances to
the festival but Jackson and Columbus is a good starting point.

Exactly where the recruiters intend to set up is unknown at this time but you
will NOT be able to miss the outrageous and disgusting ARMY OF ONE recruiting
displays. The festival is 10 days long, begins at 11am and runs until 9pm
daily. Due to the length of the festival it will be difficult to maintain a
constant presence so we STRONGLY recommend that individuals and organizations
contact us ahead of time (ASAP) with their availability so that we can be sure
to have someone there with materials. Although we will our best to provide you
with at least one leafleting partner, it would be helpful if you could bring a
friend, family member, co-worker, etc. to work with you. Another idea is for
organizations to sponsor and staff a block of time on a given day.

Besides volunteers to help leaflet and bring/hold banners and signs we are in
desperate need of assistance with flier reproduction so if you have access to
free or really cheap photocopying or printing please let us know and we will
send you the electronic files.

Be sure to bring water and snacks or money to purchase them with. Festival
tickets are sold in blocks of 11 for $7 but they can also be purchased ahead of
time (through the 24th) at Dominick's for $5.50. And don't forget to apply
sunscreen beforehand AND bring some with you for reapplication throughout the
day - the sun can be brutal. Wearing a hat or other head covering is also
recommended.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE FESTIVAL PROVIDES AN INCREDIBLE OPPORTUNITY TO GET THE WORD
OUT ABOUT A GREAT NUMBER OF ISSUES AND EVENTS - PLUS THERE ARE OTHER SPECIFIC
ITEMS OF INTEREST HAPPENING AT THE TASTE OF CHICAGO WORTH LEAFLETING, DOING
STREET THEATER OR OTHER ACTIONS AROUND. SEE BELOW.

At the COMCAST FAMILY VILLAGE display (just west of the Ferris Wheel):

- Friday June 25 to Sunday July 4 Daily from 11am-3pm Cook County Sheriff's
Office Child Fingerprinting Program

- Monday June 28 to Friday July 2 Daily from 11am-7pm Meet Officer Friendly

- Sunday, June 27 4:15pm US Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Customs &
Boarder Patrol Inspectors Canine

- Wednesday, June 30 @ 5pm Michigan and Congress A Taste of Democracy? On June
30, 2004, the Bush administration claims it will turn over power to an Iraqi
government. This government will be a puppet regime without any real power
because the Bush administration has little intention to relinquish control over
Iraq or its oil. There is no simple solution to this war. It is clear that the
Iraqi people do not want U.S. troops there and the occupation is only making the
situation worse. We say let the Iraqi people decide. Bring the troops home now!

Dear Members and Supporters,

We are writing to ask you to be part of a pivotal meeting of the
NAARPR/Chicago Branch. You will help determine the short and long-term
focus of our organization. Alice Wade, Organizer/Coordinator of the
Kentucky AARPR, will be there to assist us by sharing the experiences
that have made the KAARPR such a thriving, vital part of the Louisville
community. Please join us at 2:00 PM, Saturday, July 10, 2004 at the
United Electrical Workers Hall, 37 S. Ashland Ave.

The NAARPR was founded in Chicago in 1973 and throughout the past 31
years Chicago has maintained an active branch that has achieved many
victories through direct action. Delbert Tibbs, Perry Cobbs and Darby
Tillis were freed from death row. Ben Chavis and the Wilmington Ten,
Wallace Davis, and Joan Little won their freedom as a result of our
campaigns for justice. However in recent years our membership has aged,
and has not been replenished. The work of the Branch has been carried
out in other ways. We have provided public forums and worked in
coalition with other organizations on a number of criminal justice and
citizenship rights issues. Ending police brutality, abolishing the
death penalty, protecting the rights of all citizens—including
restoring those rights to ex-offenders, have been high priorities. But
we still see a need for our leadership towards the development of more
multi- racial unity and the involvement of organized labor in the
movement against racist and political repression." We feel that this
has been, and must continue to be, our main contribution to the
struggle against racist and political repression.

Now is the time to take stock of our current situation and determine
"Where Do We Go From Here?"

You will help decide these and other questions on July 10:

What should be our focus at this time?

Where are the most critical struggles, and where can we be most
effective? For instance, should we revive efforts to promote the "Model
Legislation for a Police Control Council" developed some years ago by
the Chicago Branch?

What strategies and resources do we need to develop to achieve our
goals?

How can we increase our active membership?

Please join us for this important discussion, and please bring others
who you think would be interested in becoming active in the NAARPR.

Yours in struggle,

March with OPCTJ in Oak Park's
4th of July parade!

We are local people who care deeply about our country.
We urge our fellow citizens to be true to
American ideals of freedom, justice, and democracy.

The parade this year will honor the brave men and women in the armed
services and their families. We honor the enormous sacrifices they
make in the name of our country. However, the American presence in
Iraq fans the flames of terrorism. We believe that the best way to
honor our servicemen/ women is to pull them out of this vortex, and
find more effective ways to counter it.

Members of the armed services and their families, who know too well
the horrors of war, are especially welcome to join us.

Please muster at Ridgeland and Adams between 1-1:45 pm.

The parade is from 2-4:00 and ends at Whittier School (Augusta & Cuyler).
Stand up for an end to the American occupation of Iraq; march with OPCTJ!

who want Ralph on the ballot. Here is
where to go on Wednesday to help keep
Ralph on the ballot in Illinois:

Cook County Clerk Office
69 W. Washington Center
5th Floor
Chicago, IL 60602
We will meet sometime between
8:00 and 9:00 am

Call Christina Tobin at either
(240) 483-1921 or at (614) 507-5726 for
specific details on when and where to
meet. There is a chance you will need to
meet at the Thompson Center which is just
down the street from the Cook County
Clerk Office. Be sure to get in touch
with Christina before you go so you can
meet up and defend Ralph's rightful place
on the ballot in Illinois.

This is the most crucial moment of our
campaign in Illinois. This will
determine whether or not all of that work
petitioning will pay off and whether or not
you and everyone else in Illinois will find
Mr. Nader on your ballot come election day.
I want to thank you all in advance for your
help in defending both Ralph's right to
ballot access and our democratic process as
a whole.

Sincrerely,

Jeff Gaffney

The Chicago mobilization committee for the Million
Worker March will meet this Saturday (7/10) at the
UNITE hall, 333 S. Ashland at 10am. The early hour is
to prevent conflict between our meeting and the UNITE,
HERE unification festivities that will be happening as
well.

You can find out more about the march at
www.millionworkermarch.org

A list of demands reads:

We seek to secure:

- The cancellation of all corporate "free" trade
agreements, including NAFTA, CAFTA and FTAA.

- Universal single-payer health care from cradle to
grave that ends the stranglehold of greedy insurance
companies and secures health care as a right of all
people in America.

- A workers' right to organize and the repeal of
Taft-Hartley and all anti-labor legislation.

- Funding for public education in a crash program to
restore our decaying and abandoned schools with state
of the art school facilities in every community.

- Funding for a vast army of teachers to end
functional illiteracy in America and unleash the
talent and potential of our abandoned children and
adults.

- The launching of a national training program in job
skills and education that will enlist our people in
rebuilding our country and put an end to both the
criminalization of poverty and the prison-industrial
complex.

- The rebuilding of] our decaying inner cities with
clean, modern and affordable housing and eliminating
homelessness in America with guaranteed housing and
jobs for all.

- An end to the poisoning of the atmosphere, soil,
water and food supply with a national emergency
program to restore the environment, end global warming
and preserve our endangered ecosystems.

- The creation of efficient, modern and free mass
transit in every city and town.

- The repeal of the PATRIOT Act, The Effective Death
Penalty and Anti-Terrorism Act and all such repressive
legislation.

"- [The slashing of] the military budget and [the]
recover [of] the trillions of dollars stolen from our
labor to enrich the corporations that profit from war.

- The opening of the budget books of the Pentagon and
the intelligence agencies in the service of
corporations and banks.

- The extension of democracy to our economic structure
so that all decisions affecting the lives of our
citizens are made by working people who produce all
value through their labor.

- An aggressive enforcement of all civil rights and a
national education campaign and mobilization against
all racist and discriminatory acts in the workplace
and in our communities.

- An increase in federal funding for the Arts in
public schools

- A democratic media that allows labor and all voices
to be heard and opposition to media monopolies and
their union-busting of media workers.

Worker March. For more information contact JJ at

There are several phone banking parties happening THIS EVENING right here in Oak
Park. Two of them are being organized by Progressive Alliance members Barry
Koren and Janet Holden. See below to sign up. Bring you cell phone.

This election will turn on a handful of votes in "battleground" states. TODAY
we're going to reach out to hundreds of thousands of unregistered voters in a
few of these states, and help them register. With thousands of us on the phones,
we can make a major difference in a couple of hours!

Cell phones in hand, we'll gather in living rooms across the country to have fun
and contact voters together. Each phone party will have a list of folks to call
and scripts to read while we're on the phone. Afterwards, we'll send a helpful
kit to anyone who tells us they'd like to register to vote, and follow up to
make sure they do. (from MoveOn.org)

To find a party in your area (there are several in Oak Park and River Forest) go
to this website.
