ESCAPE FROM SUBURBIA: BEYOND THE AMERICAN DREAM
DATE: Saturday Nov 21, 2009
TIME: 2:30 pm
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 2009, 2:30 PM
Riverside Public Library, One Burling Rd., Riverside, IL
Join us for this sequel to THE END OF SUBURBIA: OIL DEPLETION AND THE
COLLAPSE OF THE AMERICAN DREA which explored the American Way of Life
and its prospects as the planet enters the age of Peak Oil.
In ESCAPE From SUBURBIA director Greg Greene once again takes us
"through the looking glass" on a journey of discovery-- a sobering yet
vital and ultimately positive exploration of what the second half of
the Oil Age has in store for us.
Through personal stories and interviews we examine how declining world
oil production has already begun to affect modern life in North
America. Expert scientific opinion is balanced with "on the street" portraits from an emerging global movement of citizen's groups who are
confronting the challenges of Peak Oil in extraordinary ways.
This is a great documentary about peak oil and how to escape from the traditional ideology of Suburbia and adopt new ideas [for a] post peak oil world.--
Directed by Gregory Greene. Produced by Dara Rowland. Duration: 78 minutes
We are hiring young progressive activists to be freelancers and interns
at our marketing and communications company -- WebTrax Studio
(http://www.webtraxstudio.com).
We want to offer young arts/media/tech
activists some income and new skills as they develop their talents and
work for good causes. Hopefully, we can offer more pro bono (free) and
discount services to
groups on low budgets since the young people will need "practice" jobs.
As the recession gets worse and interest in social change grows, our
company expands
because there is greater need for what we do -- helping nonprofits
and socially conscious businesses do affordable marketing and
fundraising. We empower our clients by training them to use online
marketing strategies and tools. We build powerful websites that our
clients can update and expand themselves.
Please publicize the web development assistant job description below.
In future months we will need other types of arts, media and tech
skills as we get more clients. We offer much more than websites --
including branding, print communications, video, writing, photography
and strategic planning.
Send your resumé and any additional information you feel will be
helpful to:

The WebTrax Studio philosophy:
We are passionate about using our skills to bring positive change to
our communities and our planet. Almost all of us are activists. We
empower our clients and charge affordable rates. We are generous with
our support for social change and arts groups with several ongoing pro
bono clients. We support the “triple bottom line” business model which
values equally people, planet and profit. We continually search for new
resources and methods that will help our clients survive and thrive in
a tough economic environment.
Needed to apply:
• Intermediate CSS and XHTML skills
• Interested in learning or advancing skills in Joomla website-building
software
• Interested in learning internet marketing strategies and tools
• Detail-oriented and responsible
• Self-directed and enjoys problem solving
• A laptop computer with internet capability
• A passion for social change and sustainable living
• Interested in a flexible long-term freelance relationship
Training will be offered in:
• Joomla! (a versatile and powerful Open Source web content management
system)
These skills are great to have but not needed to apply:
We will be able to assign more hours to the assistant who has a wider
range of advanced skills in:
• Basic image editing (Photoshop or a similar application)
• Joomla!
• Photoshop (Intermediate level)
• MySQL databases
• Internet marketing (SEO, Google Analytics and other related skills)
• Flash
• WordPress
• "HTML Mail" templates
Location:
During the training period the assistant will help our Joomla expert
build websites in our office in Oak Park. Online tutorials and other
learning that does not require work on client websites can be done
outside our office. After the training period some or all work can be
done via telecommute from the assistant's home office. Sometimes an
assistant will be asked to work at one of our client's offices. Our
Joomla expert's home office is a 20-minute train ride from downtown
Chicago. There is a Chicago public transit stop (green line) nearby.
Flexible hours:
The assistants will be freelancers. We negotiate hours that best fit
all our needs. Although the freelance relationship offers flexibility
this assistant job is intended to be permanent and longterm --
eventually growing to full-time if the assistant is interested.
Preference will be given to candidates who have the time to quickly
learn how to customize complex Joomla templates.
Intermediate CSS and XHTML skills:
An assistant needs to know enough CSS and XHTML to build a simple CSS
template from scratch. He/she will be required to "reverse engineer"
very complex Joomla templates in order to customize them in relatively
minor ways like type styles, color scheme, page width, banner height,
image substitution, column width, and module position. Each Joomla
template is constructed slightly differently. We don't need someone
with advanced CSS skills since we don't construct complex Joomla
templates from scratch.
Joomla! training:
Joomla! is one of the most powerful and versatile web content
management systems on the planet! Learn more about it at www.joomla.org
and www.joomlachicago.com. But
with power comes a learning curve. The
assistant will teach themselves basic Joomla with videos, books, an
online course and, of course, lots of mentoring from our resident
Joomla expert. During the training period the assistant will work in
our office so we get a feel for how much he/she already knows and their
preferred learning style. Training at our office allows our Joomla geek
to easily answer questions, check progress and catch miscommunications
early. The assistant will practice on real websites jobs that have
flexible deadlines.
Pay rate
The assistants will be paid for the hours they work and will not be
salaried employees. We don't pay our assistants to learn or when they
practice on pro bono jobs. But we do pay them during training when they
assist on jobs for paying clients. We are flexible about how long the
training period extends and will adjust hourly rate to level of skill.
Learning at the right pace is important to success. Assistants who
learn faster and start at a higher skill level will achieve the full
proficiency level sooner. Very skilled individuals who work very
quickly will get higher hourly rates.
• $12 to $20 per hr –
website building tasks and content entry not involving coding
and CSS
• $ 25 to $50 per hr –
advanced Joomla, WordPress, CSS, XHTML, Flash, MySQL
and other advanced web-building skills.

From: The Cornucopia Institute <cultivate@...> Date: Thu, 12 Nov 2009 17:32:07 -0800 To: Char McAnany <cmcanany@...> Subject: ACTION ALERT: Food Safety Bill--a threat to small/organic farms--your voice is needed
Action Alert:
Senate Bill 510: FDA Food Safety Modernization Act
Tell the Senate committee not to threaten quality organic and local food production
Act now! Contact your senator before November 18.
Our food safety system is broken. Industrialized food production gives rise to serious food safety problems, and our government's ability to regulate corporate agribusiness must be strengthened -- without harming small-scale and organic family farmers.
Bills in Congress propose to give more authority to the Food and Drug Administration to regulate for food safety, inspect food processing facilities, and order mandatory recalls. The House passed its own food safety bill in July. The Senate's bill is in committee and scheduled for a mark-up (committee vote) this coming Wednesday, November 18.
Allowing the FDA to crack down on corporate food producers that threaten our citizenry's health is a step in the right direction -- as long as legislation contains protections for small-scale, organic and local food systems. Small farms could be forced out of business by increasing costs for record-keeping, testing and other measures they will not be able to comply with. These are our country's safest farms -- part of the solution, not part of the problem!
Now is the time to contact Senate committee members (especially if one is from your state) that will make changes to the bill on November 18. Our message is: Senate Bill 510 must contain protections for small-scale and organic family farms.
Please call as many committee members as you have time for!
MESSAGES FOR COMMITTEE MEMBERS:
1. Regulate farms and food processors based on risk -- with organic and local systems as the lowest-risk.
While no farm and processing plant can be completely safe and completely eliminate food safety risks, different production systems carry different levels of risk. Small and medium-sized organic farms are low-risk farms from a food safety point of view, and local food systems are low-risk systems. This fact speaks to a risk-based regulatory approach, particularly given limited federal dollars available for system-wide regulation and the need to prudently target the use of those funds.
Organic farms are already controlling pathogens and improving food safety in various ways that conventional, industrial-scale farms do not. Specifically, food safety regulation for organic and small-scale producers should focus on education and training, not one-size-fits-all food safety standards.
2. Protect organic farmers from conflicting food safety regulations.
Tell your Senator to ensure that the bill directs the FDA to integrate any food safety standards with the existing federal organic standards. No farmer should be forced to choose between organic certification and food safety rules, and the two should be streamlined to avoid unnecessary additional burdens and incompatibilities.
3. Protect wildlife, biodiversity and habitat from misguided food safety regulation.
Likewise, the food safety bill should ensure that FDA food safety standards do not conflict with existing federal conservation, environmental and wildlife standards. Farmers should be encouraged to adopt conservation practices on their farms -- in fact, many conservation practices such as vegetated buffer zones and wetland preservation have been shown to reduce the presence of foodborne pathogens on farms.
Take Action Today – Call Senate Committee Members
See the list below for Senators on the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee. Please call or fax their office, ask to speak with the aide in charge of food safety issues, and share the concerns of the small-scale and organic farming community with them.

What’s Eating
America?
Food is a central part of our social, cultural and even

ecological concerns, and it’s the most basic sign of
inequality among the various peoples of the world.

We've invited a few people who attended the Viva Palestina convoy in July to come and report back on what they saw in the 24 hours that they were in Gaza. This should be a great event that you won't want to miss out on. After they report back on what they saw, they'll be telling us a little bit about the next convoy which will be entering Gaza on January 1st, and why YOU should attend! And how, in case you won't be able to attend, you can help make a difference and contribute to the cause/event. Thaer Ahmad will be speaking about his personal experiences and the reflections he underwent throughout his journey to Gaza, describe what he witnessed on the ground, and elaborate on the process that entails joining the upcoming convoy. Please don't miss this rare and great opportunity. Please check out Viva Palestina's website for more info: http://www.vivapalestina-us.org/. If you're actually interested in signing up for the convoy, you can do so at the following link: http://www.vivapalestina-us.org/register/registration.
DECEMBER 2009 CONVOY
DECEMBER 05, 2009 - JANUARY 02, 2010
GET INVOLVED!
Viva Palestina USA is on the move...organizing our second convoy of people and vehicles in 2009! The convoy of hundreds of Viva volunteers and vehicles from the US, UK and dozens of other countries promises to garner the attention of the entire world as we make our way on December 6 from London through France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Syria, Jordan and Egypt to deliver humanitarian aid to the besieged people of Gaza! Our estimated date of arrival at the Rafah border is December 27th, one year to the day that the horrendous attack on Gaza began.
Viva Palestina maintains a three-part goal, which was applauded during our July convoy, to:
1.Distribute necessary medical aid to the Palestinian people
2.Highlight the inhumanity of the continued siege of this devastated area
3.Amplify the shift in public policy and growing solidarity of people around the world towards greater support of the Palestinian struggle
So...what are we asking YOU to do?
REGISTER TO COME ON THE CONVOY!
Registration for the U.S. convoy will be open as soon as our redesigned Viva Palestina USA website goes live during the week of October 5. Right now, though, you can make sure everyone you know visits the current website to sign up for important email updates!
VOLUNTEER TO SET UP AN EVENT IN YOUR AREA!
You can organize fundraising events in your area to help promote the convoy and to educate others about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. British Member of Parliament, George Galloway, will be speaking in several cities across the US in late October and early November and might be visiting yours! Additionally, many of the fantastic volunteers that participated in our July convoy are eager to share their experiences! Contact Viva Palestina (usinformation@...) to set up a powerful eyewitness report or panel discussion in your community.
DONATE!
Your donations to Viva Palestina are tax-deductible! Visit our website to make an online donation or send your cash or checks made out to:
Viva Palestina-IFCO
47 W. Polk St., Suite 100-403
Chicago, IL 60605
We will be purchasing medical supplies along the route and additional vehicles as donations allow. You can also donate medical supplies and materials and arrange to have them taken or shipped to London or Istanbul. Additionally, your donation of camping materials for use by volunteers traveling on the route is appreciated.
SPREAD THE WORD!
Use your contacts list, student groups, community organizations, listservs and network of friends and family to help tell others about the Viva Palestina convoy! We are an entirely grassroots project, seeking to unify individuals and organizations with an active interest in providing dire humanitarian support to the Palestinian people who have suffered under occupation, siege and bloodshed. Your help in dispersing information about our efforts is as important and appreciated as your time and donations.
With the Gaza infrastructure still devastated, the entry of materials suffocated by the enduring siege, and many basic needs of every aspect of society unmet, we are unwavering in our determination to provide medical and humanitarian aid to the people who immediately won our hearts with their kindness and strength. When our first US convoy entered Gaza in mid-July, our volunteers were told repeatedly that everyone had been eagerly anticipating the convoy's arrival and that what meant the most to the Palestinian people was our presence...our standing shoulder to shoulder with them in solidarity. The brief experience was so powerful, so overwhelming and the response from the Palestinians and from our volunteers so positive that, with your help, we are confident this next effort will be an endeavor of even greater impact!
Please visit our website now to sign up for email updates and visit frequently to donate, follow our events calendar, and to review previous emails and read new updates. Remember our convoy registration period will begin the week of October 5th will be open for only one short month! VIVA PALESTINA!

Rethink
Afghanistan
Saturday, October 24, 2009, 3:00 pm
Riverside Public Library, One Burling Road, Riverside, IL
Join us on Saturday, October 24 at 3 pm
when we show one of the Chicago
area’s first viewings of Robert Greenwald’s explosive, full length documentary, Rethink Afghanistan.Rethink Afghanistan focuseson the key
issues surrounding this war. Diverse testimony, including a segment presenting
many women of Afghanistan, covers both problems
and solutions, while graphic footage of civilian casualties from U.S. air strikes illustrates
why military force is ineffective at solving Afghanistan's many problems. Hear
from veterans of the war as they testify to Congress about facts on the ground.
Panelists in the film include Jake Dilliberto, a Marine veteran and member of
Vets for Rethink Afghanistan, Nathan Havey of Brave New Foundation and local
peace activists
The film has been issued in 6 parts with the
production team having made each part available on its website as soon as
possible to counter the ongoing escalation of this war.
·Part One focuses on
what military escalation will achieve in Afghanistan.
·Part Two looks at how
the war could further destabilize a nuclear-armed Pakistan.
·Part Three focuses on
the staggering costs of the war, which could easily exceed $1 trillion.
·Part Four examines the civilian
casualties caused by recent U.S. airstrikes in Afghanistan.

Is water part of a shared "commons," or is it a commodity? "Thirst," an
award-winning film by filmmakers Alan Snitow and Deborah Kaufman, tells the
stories of communities in Japan, Bolivia, India and Stockton, California, that

‘Mad As Hell Doctors’ and Cal Nurses to Join Picket Line
at SK Hand Tool where workers lost health coverage--and suddenly
by Allen Nowakowski
CHICAGO, IL (9/22/09) – When SK Hand Tools Corp. dropped their employees’ health insurance coverage last May – completely, and with no warning – workers took to the picket lines. Friday at 1 pm they will be joined by two groups who understand what the denial of health care means: the “Mad As Hell Doctors” and nurses from the California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee (CNA/NNOC).
“Like us, the SK workers are mad as hell – and with good reason,” says Dr. Paul Hochfeld, an emergency room physician from Corvallis, Oregon. Hochfeld leads the group of Mad As Hell Doctors who are crossing the country speaking out for a single-payer system – a system that provides comprehensive health care for all. “How can you have a productive, competitive workforce,” Hochfeld says, “if you don’t keep workers and their families healthy?”
CNA/NNOC, one of the nation’s leading nurses’ organizations and health care unions, is also a major proponent of single-payer health care and of the health-care rights of workers. They’ve brought supplies to the SK picket line and strongly support the workers. “Nurses are patient advocates first and foremost,” says Dennis Kosuth, RN, an emergency room nurse at Stroger Hospital and a member of CNA/NNOC. “We are tired of seeing our patients suffer, not just from their physical condition but from the health-care crisis gripping our nation. The best, most human solution for this is to guarantee health care on the single payer model – with everybody in, nobody out.”
The doctors and nurses will join the picket line this Friday, September 25, at SK’s Chicago site, 3535 W. 47th Street, at 1:00 p.m. They will be available for media interviews. The following day, Saturday, September 26, the Mad As Hell Doctors will hold a public rally at the University of Illinois at Chicago. The rally kicks off at 11 a.m. at the UIC School of Pharmacy, 833 S. Wood Street. For more information, please visit: www.MadDocsChicago.com and www.MadAsHellDoctors.com

We'd love to find a band of "players"
for a skit outside the
CIGNA on Monday during the lunch
hour. Collaborators need to
meet and "rehearse" short 7-9 min. skit (i.e.
get parts and do quick
read through/walk through/run through at
around 11), do it at 12 noon,
and be done by about 1 pm.
IMPORTANT: If you think you can come PLEASE Call Kajsa scout a
spot to park
and meet, set-up and
rehearse tomorrow or Saturday. Kajsa's Cell# is 714-269-4827 - (be sure
to program it if you can't
find them or have difficulty on Monday)
Our goal is to get press attention and trick
them into covering

arrival on the 25th. This
worked in Minneapolis as you can read in
yesterday's Minneapolis
Star Tribune. Here's some photos
of what they did with only 5 people. There is
a script (Download)
and a fun sound score with Loony Tunes
music, spooky organ, a siren,
and a karaoke "Time Warp" for which we've
re-written the lyrics.

It'd be awesome if our DePaul friends, Little Village, November

also be amazing to get the Chicago JwJ crowd

would be enough to do an EXCELLENT action. A
