ONE members you know. We are hosting a call for ONE volunteers from around the
country next Tuesday. Thanks, Kim Smith

Dear ONE members,

Thank you for your on-going support of ONE and the world's poorest people. In
the past, many of you played an active role in ONE Vote '08, and more recently
in your support of the "Kerry-Lugar Amendment" that helped restore 4 billion
dollars to the International Affairs Budget in the US Senate. We are proud of
your support and help in each and every victory...but our work is not done.

At this point, ONE is proud to invite you to join a conference call on May 12th
at 8:00 pm EDT (5 pm PDT) to find out how to get even more involved with ONE.
We will be briefing you on the latest policy and legislative news, and also be
announcing our new ONE Groups Tool and highlighting the upcoming Regional ONE
Membership Conferences!

This is an exciting time for ONE and in order to grow and expand our efforts, we
are asking you to please ask a friend to join the call as well. If you have
been active with ONE for years or if you are just interested in getting started
in the fight against extreme poverty around the world you are welcome to join
the call and find out about volunteer opportunities through the rest of 2009.

Tuesday, May 12th
ONE Volunteer Conference Call
8:00 pm EDT (5 PM PDT)

Call in Number: Toll-1-888-619-1583
After you dial in you will be asked to enter a participant code: # 256590

We now have the resources to fight global AIDS, malaria, and extreme poverty,
and save millions of lives around the world. Through targeted and better aid,
responsible debt relief, and improved trade opportunities, we now have the
ability to partner with responsible but highly impoversihed nations that are
fighting corruption, demonstrating transparency and accountabilty, and create a
better and safer world for everyone. All of this is possible, but will only
become a reality if you use your voice and ensure that our elected leaders know
that saving lives is not only possible, but that it is a priority.

Thank you again and we look forward to hearing from you on the call.

All the best,

Kim Smith, ONE Deputy Field Organizer

Hi All,
I am a World Vision Child Ambassador working to end extreme poverty
through child sponsorship. Bono actually worked with his wife in a
World Vision feeding camp in Ethiopia in the eighties thus convincing
him to do the work he does today, I would love to be involved in any
events this group has and would appreciated any help in promoting
child sponsorship through World Vision which is under the ONE
umbrella. When a child is sponsored, they get a chance a life through
food provisions, health care, school, vaccinations, Malaria nets,
etc., as we build up their communities into self-sustaining villages
including microfinance loans so the villagers can have small businesses.
Thank you for you passion for the poor. If you have an groups I can
speak to, any churches,... anyway of getting the word out oj how the
poor can be helped...Let me know

There are lots of ways for us to fight extreme poverty, but I think the
most fun has to be swimming in a fancy dress.

I'm not joking. This isn't an April Fools prank.

April 5 is the World Swim Against Malaria, when one million people
around the world take a swim against malaria. And like last year, a
group of ONE members here in the Santa Monica area are getting together,
donning fancy dresses, and going swimming to fight malaria.

Whether you want to go swimming in a fancy dress or just watch and meet
up with some other ONE members, we would love for you to join us this
Saturday at 12 noon at Culver City Municipal Plunge, 4117 Overland
Avenue at Culver Blvd. Pool temperature is 81 F.

Please RSVP if you can attend:
http://one.org/event/events/event.html?event_id=369&id

.
Unlike most people who do the swim against malaria, we don't get
sponsors based on the number of laps we swim, we simply have sponsors
who pay for the mere spectacle of watching a group of people swim in
fancy dresses. Since every $5 that we raise can provide a child with a
malaria-fighting bed net, it doesn't take that much for us to make a
big difference. Come sponsor yourself!

Hope to make a splash with you,

Herley Jim Bowling, ONE Member

We are going to be joining the World Swim Against Malaria on April 5. The goal is one million swimmers around the world on or around that day raising money for treated bed nets at $5 per net to prevent malaria, still the biggest killer of children and pregnant women in the world. Every $5 helps save a life.

Now is the time to set up your sponsor page and start collecting sponsors online or in person. To set up a sponsor page linked to ours go to www.worldswimagainstmalaria.com/churchop (Church in Ocean Park has initiated the ONE LA/Santa Monica Fancy Dress Swim) and click on "Create your own swim/sponsorship page, linked to this page" and follow the directions. It's easy! Then you can start sending the link to your page to friends, family, classmates, co-workers, neighbors, and others so they can join you and/or sponsor you.

You'll notice from the pages already linked to ours that you don't have to swim laps or a distance or swim at all, just splash around in fancy dress(es) with the rest of us. Formals, prom dresses, bridesmaid dresses, wedding gowns, the possibilities go beyond imagining. This is a swim for all ages so just make sure your costume is family-friendly.

We are exploring several leads on heated pools - aaaah! - in Santa Monica and surrounding region. If you have a connection to a heated pool or a favorite fountain let us know by comment below or at herleyjim@.... Location will be posted as soon as we have one.

Get ready to have fun while saving lives!

The Artists for Human Rights Art Show was highly successful. Here's a quick report on it that may appear on the ONEBlog as well.
The Artists for Human Rights Art Show opening was very well attended. A friend of mine arriving late sat in a line of cars on the road leading to Bergamot Station in Santa Monica, site of the James Gray Gallery location of the art show, for more than 15 minutes and ultimately wasn't able to get in. Amy Quinn and her husband and young son and I were the only ones who managed to get there with ONE T-shirts on. Amy brought materials on ONE and ONE Vote '08. She left to put her son to bed before we started taking photos. But I got this picture of Anne Archer, founder of Artists for Human Rights, and me with our ONE wristbands. Artists for Human Rights and ONE have a lot in common. Anne is a passionate advocate for the things both organizations are working for. There may be another photo or two to follow, of Caryn West, writer and illustrator of The Trouble With The Alphabet, her husband Brock, and me. Brock had a photographer friend of his take those. I'll pass them on to you as soon as he emails them to me.

John Ackerly, President- International Campaign for Tibet
To use the simplicity of the alphabet to raise awareness of the
world's woes is brilliant. To have children of the world explain in
easy terms the compelling images is genius.
If ever there was a prime example of "the pen is mightier than the
sword" then this is THE book. IT SHOULD BE COMMAND READING FOR
EVERYBODY - from world leaders to youngsters learning to read and all in
between! There's raw power at work here and beautifully created
with love and a dedication beyond belief. We always say that " the
future is with our children"- if we followed the message from these
children we would have that final elusive peace. Once read you will
never forget it!

Hi everyone!

Last year, many of you walked on The ONE Campaign's AIDS Walk Los
Angeles team. Lace up your sneakers - ONE.org has started up its team
again for this year's AIDS Walk, and we would love you to join us!
This year's AIDS Walk is on Sunday, October 21 - less than four weeks
away! But don’t worry, we still have plenty of time to organize a
successful AIDS Walk team!

Last year, The ONE Campaign's AIDS Walk team had 114 walkers and
raised $16,733. This year, our goal is to recruit 120 walkers and
raise $20,000! With 120 walkers, each of us would only have to raise
at least $167 each to reach our fundraising goal - and what a
difference that would make in the lives of people struggling with
HIV/AIDS here in LA County! I know we can do it!

To join the ONE.org team, visit the following link and click "Join Our
Team." (you may need to copy the link into your URL line)

PROGRESS TOWARDS MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS

Debt cancellation and targeted aid have helped put 20 million more
African children in school

In 2002 only 1% of Africans with HIV/AIDS received treatment. With
help from PEPFAR, by the end of 2006 28% were on treatment. In
numbers, the increase was from 50000 to 1.34 million.

In the Lubombo region of S.Africa, spraying and bed nets were used to
reduce malaria in the population by 90% proving the potential for
cutting deaths from a preventable and treatable disease that claims
almost 3000 lives every day.

More effective aid has increased economic growth and poverty reduction
in countries such as Mozambique and Tanzania. In these countries with
increased growth, more children were enrolled in primary school and
infant mortality was reduced.

Bush proposed and helped establish the Millennium Challenge Account
(MCA), which funds initiatives by low-income countries committed to
addressing the needs of poor people. He also promised an additional
$10 billion between 2004 and 2008 to fight global AIDS, tuberculosis
and malaria. At last year's G-8 summit, the United States agreed to
double assistance to Africa by 2010 and supported a debt relief
package for highly indebted poor countries.

For FY 2007, ONE's members sent over 200,000 letters to Congress,
urging them to continue efforts to support the Global Fund. In
response Congress included $724m for the Global Fund in the Continuing
Resolution that passed Congress in February 2007, an increase of
$179.5m over last year.

In the 2007 budget, Congress has approved an increase of 1.5 billion
in aid with about 1 billion of the increase for Africa. If
appropriated, big if, the US will be on track to honor aid goals.
