Is anyony going out this weekend for trail maintenance. I just
returned from Okuma last night. If anyone is going out count me in
just let me know when and where.
0800 depart chibana gate three area ride out and over La Luge and
across Hawk Ridge then back over Blurried Vision return thru the cane
field and ack to spiders and pipes to the start point estimate 4
hours easy pace for a in shape rider 24 plus miles.
I can be there at 1530,Today 18 sep: say we meet at the end of the
new road NW of
the driving range, at the small bento shop and drink machines.
There is a newer yellowish house there with a Shish dog on a pole
as well. It is a four way intersection where you turn to go up to;
where we did trail work last week. we will go to the water tower at
the exit of Mud rock run from there. Vern
I'm in for a couple hours Wednesday night. I was out there today and
cleaned a couple falls and a lot of debris from the bowl. Used one
of the falls to get a start on a log ride. It needs some work though.
Both entries are open and the exit to slick rock is clear. Looked
like there were a couple of big dead falls just past the rock garden,
so I would guess that is the aim of tomorrows effort. Where do you
want to meet? Any time is good for me just let me know when.

Thanks to all those who helped out Sat with the fixes to One-way
hills. Its amazing what motivated workers can do in a few hours.
With that in mind, I'd like to arrange another day -- maybe this
Saturday or Sunday morning. Projects I know of are fixing the bridge
at mother, making the final cuts at the new trail behind paintball
(Fern valley??), and tuning up La Luge. Volunteers?
Sorry I couldn't make it out for trail day but somethings came up
that had to be taken care of. I even went out and bought a few tools.
Well I hope to be at the next one and Ill do what I can on the trails
for now.
Bridge at Mother is CLOSED -- it looks ridable right now, but will
fall out if you put weight on it. For now you'll have to get your
feet wet to go around it....
Thanks allot. That bridge seems to take a beating after every storm. What is it that the "North Shore" guys are putting on their stunts to keep them rid able in the wet, is it window screen material? I was thinking about that stuff on the last ride I took before I typhoon evac'ed out early last week. The first bridge on the High Road threw me off like it knew judo.

Spider alley/Hawk Ridge/High Road/Mother/Shute is cleared for riding. One point of caution, watch out for the bridge at mother, it became the Dam at mother and is now lopsided and very slippery. Might be a good item to tackle with more manpower and tools.

Gate 3 to Kurashiki dam is now open....mostly. One portion (start of
the downhill from spiders N pipes) has a large deadfall on the trail,
can't be easily cut and no simple route around it. For now, we'll
have to climb over it. Options as I see it are (A) Get a chainsaw up
the trail to cut a section out. (B) Build another A-frame like at
the waterhole (C) Cut a big detour down the hill and back up.
Other than that, all the big debris is gone from the trail. Some
portions had to be re-routed due to other large deadfalls.
For those trail maintainers -- I'd also recommend a machete or
large knife for cutting vines and small trees.
Trail, maintance will be Saturday, 14th at 0800, we can meet at the
pull up bars, Bring a rake, pick ax, Large oki farm hoe, or fire line
spade like tool. If you do not have a tool, see self help and get a
pick Ax , the wider the better but it needs some wieght to it . We
only need a shovel or too, Van , and I will have saws if required.
if everyone that wrote back can be there we shoud be able to do a lot
in 3-4 hours. I would like to be done at noon and walking out if
possibleto the vans and cars by 1300. We will decide on the location
when we arrive and depart the Pullup Bars. Vern
There are many place Ia m sure that were damaged but to fix the HLZ
wil not be a good idea. Well the trail is washed out up to the HLZ at
the ASP fence line. @ last no more motorcycles, but the jeeps may try
ro fix it. However I seen the Loggers and they are starting to remove
the pine in this area. The jeep road will soon be replace with a new
wide skid trail. We can only hope that they do not make roads of the
trail on Hawk ridge and some of the others in the area. They should
top log this area, but it will distroy Hawk ridge in a couple of
places.
I'm up for fixing One-Way hills - there's a couple of spots that need
touch up, but I think you and I are thinking of the same impossible
cut-back straight up the hill - when it's wet it's not even walkable.

I will try this once, I would like to fix Blurred Vison, or the top
of the La Luge, say next SAT the 14th. What will we do; water bars,
rut filling, root removal and pehaps a jump/ small drop. If I get
four or more to help.
The next project could be to work on the section of One Way Hills
that is not ride able.

There are a couple of good trail building sites on the web if you
due a search. The first thing you need to learn is leave the bike at
home on trail maintance days and get some full sized tools.
However they sell some small garden trimers at the PX that work
well for those lazy days and group rides, put them in your camelbak
then they there when you need them.
They can also be used to open the facet water stops when the
handles have been removed. I have also used mine to make a bandage
and siling for injurid rides. Trim while you wait, walk or check out
a line, but you cant do anymore than SUCK O2 unless you have trimes
in your camelbak or have been passed by some O2 Sucking trail user
while contributing your time to the Spider loop.
The trails or obsticals by me for me and those whom were selfless
enough to contribute, their time. I ride alone almost every ride, and
have managed to not fall off of the obsticals to date. If they were
easy to do, what would be the point?
In light of resent postings the newest trail will be called BIG DOG.
find it, then ride it. The same goes for Fern Valley loop. As well as
the new loop off of Mad Hatter.
PS: The next time you see some people working on the trail, it might
be polite to ask how there are doing or just stop and say thanks.
Vern out.
Ive added a bunch of new photos in different folders and a couple of
new folders as well.
Please feel free to add what you would like also as long as it is
associated with Mountain biking. And yes those girls are associated
with MTB!
Also lets get a few photos from other off island places that local
people have ridden and post them in the appropriate folder as well.

If anybody wants to do a group ride, lemme know. I'll be out on Spider
Loop today and I plan on riding again on Monday morning. Monday will
probably be Chibana Loop (the 22 miler) and expect frequent stops to
move typhoon blow down. On that note, could everybody (including
myself) put in a little effort to do some trail work during every ride,
since organized trail work days don't seem to work. That way if
everybody does a little work, nobody has to do a lot of work.

Hey there Rich, good question on why we built the Zoomy so high. It
was actually the brain child of Vern to build Zoomy but it took
Myself and another guy to get the idea off the ground. The three of
us talked it over for quite some time and that was the area that
seemed best for a "realllly challenging but do-able stunt".
We also have some great Ideas for some smaller ones in that same area
but again it takes materials and man power.
Just behind the start of zoomy is a small hill with a dip in front of
it and then the zoomy stunt itself. We would like to get a 1-2 ft.
high plank ride there so that people can practice on somthing that
they dont have to freek out over hurting themselfs on.
Anyone out there that would like to build stunts in this area should
feel free to do so. All that we ask is that you dont modify the ones
that are there unless they are falling apart and need repair.
Many people have different ridding levels and styles.
Those of us who built Zoomy are at the level to confidently ride it.
Many are not but I still enjoy ridding the trails with them also.
Dont take the hight issue and think we did it to appear as if we were
trying to prove somthing. Its more the case of boyish ambition that
went a little bit overboard.
And to re-state what you have already said Rich, YES
"DO NOT RIDE THIS STUNT ALONE, FALLING OFF WILL GET YOU HURT MORE
THAN LIKELY".
I look forward to returning to Okinawa in January. See you then and
keep the rubber side down.
Randy
It's off of Paintball. If you keep your eye out to the right you'll see patches of bare area with the red sandstone/clay stuff. That's where it is. BTW, the bridge is probably about 9 feet above the ground at one point. Why so tall, Randy? Seems like more of a safety risk than necessary, especially considering the rocks underneath most of the structure. There's also a teeter-totter which is more sane.
DO NOT RIDE THIS AREA ALONE!!!!!!

Hey JBlanton kewl of you to write in and post.
I just wanted to say one thing about trails on Okinawa. Durring the
rainy season which is almost over, no matter how much you ride the
trails they will get overgrown. That is why trial maintenance is so
important durring this period.
Once the dry season gets here trail maint. almost drops off
completely. So its bust your ass durring the hot and wet months
keeping the trails open, and then ride your ass off the rest of
the "good" ridding months!
See you out there on the trails in 4 months, and keep the rubber side
down!
Randy
Last weekend was the first time I rode at spider loop and the first
time I have ridden for about a year or so. I rode Sat and Sun. I
think the trails are great but they do need some work like everyone
has been saying. I will help out with maintaining the trails also,
just give me a few weeks to ride them alitle bit and get to know them
first. I always see things in the messages about pull up bars where
are they? Well I hope to see you all out there, I am trying to ride
at least 3 times a week. If we all ride often the trails will not get
overgrown.
