Hello PC Groupleaders, I hope groupleaders will Fwd this to their
membership, with encouragement to add their names and comments. The
Postal Service has provided us the opportunity to express ourselves
concerning this recent decision, and we shouldn't waste the
opportunity afforded us. Background was sent out earlier by RPCV
Virginia Pulver, and basically has to do with eliminating inexpensive
international surface mail, by which all textbooks and printed
material have traditionally been shipped, in favor of faster air mail
-- at three to four times the cost. The comments that have been
recorded here are inspiring. Click link below. John Turnbull

Subject: Saving Int'l Surface Mail

Hi Everybody,

Great news ! Our national petition to the US Postal Service passed
3,000 today. The distinction of no. 3,000 goes to RPCV Betsy Brunstad
(location unknown). Thanks also to our own Christine, Greg, Anne,
Cynthia, Anita, Robin, Erika, Peggy, Karen, Rita, Leah, Emily,
Jennice, Dawn, and many others who can't be identified. It seems that
the women have swept the field on this one.

Replies come from many different people, and from places as diverse as
South Africa, Malawi, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Israel, and
England. Keeping the supply of school textbooks, medical texts, &
cetera coming to schools and hospitals in developing countries is an
international concern.

The Postal Service examines our petition daily and wants to know what
you think, so if you haven't recorded you name and comment, please
join the team. Click http://www.petitiononline.com/zikomo/petition.html

Thanks again, John Turnbull Santa Fe

Hey Peace Corp folks. I think maybe that our groups have a lot in common. We are both interested in making the world a better place. I suppose many of you were overseas doing your part to effect this change. I totally admire that you guys did that it’s awesome.

I’m doing my part by trying to arrange for kids from some of those same countries the opportunity to come to the US and attend high school and live with an American family. I firmly believe that the best way to permanently fix the problems of the world is to ‘convert’ the youth in those countries that hate us and they will bring a whole new attitude back home with them. When we get enough of these kids thru this program things WILL improve.

My problem is 2 fold. First I have the high schools restricting the number of exchange students they will take. (don’t ask me why) then I can’t find host families willing to take in one of these precious kids for the school year.

I would greatly appreciate anyone who would visit my website listed below. There you can learn about the YES program for Muslim country students and the FLEX program for students in the former Soviet countries.

Please help; I’ll guarantee that in the end you will find it a very rewarding experience.

Thanks

Steve

As the photos verify, Tim was a terrific host, his house and pool are gorgeous, and everyone had a great time.

By the way, the links on the bottom of that web page is where new subscriber can enroll or old ones inscribe.

We hope to see you on Tuesday evening at Gloria's in Addison for Happy Hour.   Remember to try  the papusas and Salvadorian tamales -- not at all related to Mexican tamales.

Subject: Int'l Surface Mail Petition Approaches 5,000 !

Hello PC Groupleaders,

A couple messages sent earlier had asked Groupleaders to Fwd this to their membership, with encouragement to add their names and comments to this Int'l Surface Mail petition.  As of today, 11 Aug 07, the total signatures has risen to 4,500, a remarkable number considering that almost none stand to gain anything personally from it.  Purely a wish for a better world, in the Peace Corps tradition, and a plea to the gov't to assist.

I would ask you all to send this reminder out again,  since it seems each time (to maybe four times) elicits another round of signatures and comments.  I would like to see the petition exceed 6,000.  It is probably the single most valuable thing we can do to support the current efforts of the NPCA Advocacy Program (Jonathan Pearson), and our non-PC associates.  Later, hopefully,  there will be hearings in Congress, and the need to contact Senators and Representatives.  I am told that the attitude of congressional staffers is very positive, and flattering of our humanitarian concern.  There is reason to be optimistic.

It basically has to do with the US Postal Service decision to eliminate inexpensive international surface mail, by which all textbooks and printed material have traditionally been shipped,  in favor of faster air mail -- at three to four times the cost. This single decision has virtually eliminated many teaching, literacy, and library programs sponsored by serving PCVs, and a surprisingly large and varied number of OTHER efforts, including hospitals, health training, environmental protection, and wildlife preservation, all over the world.  It is shocking the number of admirable efforts, PC aside, which have been demolished as a result of this one gov't decision. But the Postal Service has provided us the opportunity to express ourselves concerning this  decision, and we shouldn't waste the opportunity afforded us.  Click  http://www.petitiononline.com/zikomo/petition.html

Several organizations, lead by Shannon Brown, Friends of Malawi, and Michael Quint, Books for Israel,  have begun a web-site addressing the issue.  Access it at
M-Bags-subscribe@yahoogroups.com  There is a lot of informed discussion here.

This is a noble effort, if ever there was one.  It sends a message far greater than simply the issue of mail; and that being that there are MANY Americans who continue to adhere to the vision of John F Kennedy and the founders of the Peace Corps, that patient work toward understanding among peoples, and the effect of education, ultimately is the only path to world peace. This was the vision of authors William Lederer and Eugene Burdick, a half century ago, whose writings were the inspiration for the Peace Corps itself.  Right now, more than ever, Washington needs to hear this.

I think now is the time for these thoughts about peace to reemerge, as an alternative to roadside bombs, murder, hate, and mass carnage. This petition furthers that.  One little candle above a sea of darkness.

Best regards to all,   John Turnbull   Santa Fe    New Mexico Peace Corps Assoc

Hearts & Hammers 2007
Saturday, September 22, 2007

Hearts and Hammers works with the City of Dallas to identify
homeowners who need assistance to keep their homes' exteriors within
city code. H&H gathers materials, volunteer teams and resources, each
team chooses a house and does the needed-and much appreciated
work-once a year on workday.

This year we are in South Dallas. Our N. Texas Peace Corps
Association house is located at 3167 E. Ledbetter Dr., Dallas 75216.
Our homeowner is Hattie Lee Moore, 82, and her 60 year old son Willie
lives with her. Mrs. Moore and Wille have lived in the house for over
20 years, and are very appreciative for our volunteer assistance.

The work the house needs is straightforward and much needed-scrape,
paint, replace rotted wood, build a handrail, etc. We will need a
full crew of 20-25 folks, and if you feel you don't have any technical
skills please come because you will learn on the job and have a
fulfilling time.

What to bring: 3 EMPTY GALLON PLASTIC JUGS, 2 4" PAINTBRUSHES,
scrapers, any painting stuff you have, sunscreen, a hat, beverages (no
beer), your toolbox, broom, hearts, rags, hammers, circular saw,
LADDERS, yard tools and lots of elbow grease. I am your captain this
year, please call me to sign up and ask any other questions.

Directions: Take I-35 south to I-30 east to I-45 south, or Central
Expy. south through downtown Dallas to I-45 south. After about 3
miles exit Loop 12/Ledbetter and go west (right). Go right at the
third street, Haas Dr., then left on E. Ledbetter. The house will be
on the right in the first block

(This is the charity started by the Austin RPCVs after Hurricane Gilbert. Rio Bravo is about 25 miles from McAllen. It is like being back in the Peace Corps for four days.  Open to non-RPCVs as well; in fact,  non-PCVs  are now the majority.  There is also an annual spring break trip.  Ed)

We're starting to plan the next service trip to Rio Bravo, Mexico. Hope you can join us! Departing Thanksgiving morning Nov 22, returning late afternoon Sunday Nov 25. Mark your calendars.

Our pre-trip meeting will be Sunday afternoon, November 4 to brief folks on what's happening currently with the program in RB, and match folks up with jobs, rides, and roommates.

If you're even thinking about going, shoot a reply to this email so we can keep you in the loop.
Let us know when was the last time you went to RB (if applicable) if you think you'll need a ride or be able to take riders (besides yourself)- shared gas costs if you plan to bring a friend/relative/ other person/people how in/definite you are about coming. Also if you have special skills (Spanish, carpentry, computer, teacher, scientist etc) or interests. Or needs.

Work:

This time (for those interested in hob-knobbing a bit) we'll be pairing some volunteers or pairs of volunteers up with translators (local English Teachers) to do science demonstrations or to take kids on some field trips. We'll also need some creative folks to occupy some children with games so they stay out of the hair of those doing construction. Construction this time will be installing vent fans and sheetrocking at the Community Center (Casa de Katie), and some repairs. For the techies, we'll also be repairing some sick computers.

Costs:

Participation fee ($45 this time) will include a t-shirt, dinner in a restaurant Saturday, and ensure food at lunchtime Fri and Sat. It also includes a donation to the project to cover materials. Plan on sharing costs of about 55 gallons of gas- total for down and back at 20 mpg. Sharing $40 hotel room cost. Buying - lunch in US on way down and way back. -Dinner on Thursday in Mexico (might be provided via local community potluck) -Breakfast each day.

Bring either a Drivers License or Passport for ID returning to US. You do NOT need a passport yet to go by car.
