Subject: Winter Trash Pick Up on Northwest Highway
brynne2k@...

Hello All,
It's time to bag that winter trash!

This Saturday we are having our make-up Trash Pick Up
day in our designated area on Northwest Highway at 75,
on the west side. (We postponed the date because of
snow, rain and cold in the forecast.)

Please join us in the parking lot in front of Bllue
Mesa Restaurant on the southwest corner of 75 and
Northwest to get bags. It feels good to make a clean
start, a clean difference in our environment. The more
people who come, the faster this goes, and certainly
the more bags we can drop off for the city to pick up.

Any questions, please call Brynne Sissom 972-650-1647

Hello RPCV,

I received the following email from the assistant principal at Irving
ISD. They would like a former Peace Corps volunteer to speak about
their expereince during their Career Day 2007. Please contact Lisa
Molinar directly if you are interested.

Hello,

We are currently beginning to plan for the 2007 Career Day at Farine.
We would like to cordially invite you to come be a part of our Career
Day which will be held on May 18, 2007, from 8:00-2:30. We would
love for you to come and speak to the students about your career, how
you got there, and what it takes day to day. The kids love to hear
about you and what your days are like, along with any props you may
want to bring.

You may request whatever time frame during the day that works for you
(i.e. I can come all day, or I can come from 9-10, etc), what grade
(s) you would like to speak to, and if you need any equipment etc.
We would be happy to work around your time and schedule.

Please let me know if you are interested, if you can stop by for a
few minutes, or even give us the name of a friend or associate who
might also be interested in presenting at our career day.

Career Day is one of the many highlights each year for the
students/staff and it is all due to your time and generosity. I
would like to thank you in advance for considering Farine and I look
forward to seeing you this year!

on 2/2/07. Sorry for the typo.
2) There will be a Steering Committee meeting on Monday, March 5 at
Borders Book Store on Lovers Lane at Greenville Ave. at 6:30 PM.
3) A big thank you to those who worked on "Adopt a highway" last
Saturday and those six who made Happy Hour at Metro Grill last Thursday.

The Hill Country RPCVs invited you to volunteer for a service
expedition to Rio Bravo, Mexico -- just across the border from
McAllen, Texas. (This project was started 19 years ago from Hurricane
Gilbert and has just kept going.)

The trip departs from Austin on the morning of Thursday, March 15 and
returns March 18. The volunteers will be painting murals, building
study tables and otherwise contributing to bettering the conditions
for these young learners. All in the company of fellow RPCV's, their
friends, and distant acquaintances are invited. YOU NEED NOT SPEAK
SPANISH OR HAVE ANY INNATE CONSTRUCTION SKILLS TO PARTICIPATE!

Total expenditures typically range between $120 and $220 (depending
on what you spend on gas, hotel, food).

To sign up to go, or just find out more, contact Christine Cwik via
email: Mathabo@... or rob@....

What Several of Unite For Sight's Partner Eye Clinics Say:
  • "Unite For Sight has touched the lives of so many people in Ghana and reduced the suffering of mankind. Many people now see Unite For Sight as a symbol of hope.  The question I have always asked myself is 'what would have happened to all these people who have benefited from Unite For Sight programs had the organization not come to their aid?' It is likely that many would have perished in their agony." --Dr. James Afful Clarke, Ophthalmologist/Medical Director, Crystal Eye Clinic, Ghana
  • "Visits of Unite For Sight volunteers help us enormously. They assist us in eye camps when we do surgeries, help us in out reach clinics screening patients for eye diseases and children for refractive error.  They help us check vision and distribute glasses. Each volunteer also gives a presentation to the local ophthalmologist on global community ophthalmology at our eye clinics, which is very informative for all.  As each day passes, my faith and belief becomes stronger in the fact that our desire to serve the poor patients and their desire to see wouldn’t have been possible without the assistance of Unite For Sight. --Dr. Ajit Sinha, Director, A.B. Eye Institute; President, All India Ophthalmological Society
  • "With the help of Unite For Sight and its Volunteers we are able to improve in the number of free cataract surgeries.  Prior to our association with Unite For Sight we were doing around 10-30 free cataract surgeries each month. With the help of Unite For Sight we were able to improve our surgical statistics three to four folds and our free surgical volume increased to around 100 each month.  Every dollar of donation given to Unite For Sight is reaching to the deepest corners of the world and impacting changes in lives of people by giving them the gift of vision."--Dr. T. Senthil, Ophthalmologist, Uma Eye Clinic and Vision Foundation, Chennai, India
  • "I must say that Unite for Sight volunteers have come to give hope to the people of Tamale and Northern Region, and all of us appreciate the wonderful work these volunteers are doing for these poor and vulnerable people who otherwise would not have access to quality eye care services." --Dr. Seth Wanye, Eye Clinic of Tamale Teaching Hospital, Ghana
  • "I have no word to express our gratitude for your hard work and untiring commitment towards the eye care work world wide and putting optimum effort to recruit all good volunteers for deployment. As we have been working with partnership by deploying volunteers to our Kalinga Eye Hospital and NYSASDRI based in Orissa, India, it gives me immense  pleasure for such worth while partnership for restoring vision of thousands of eye sight from the remote and rural villages. Your support for conducting cataract surgery for poor patients empowered them to live independently and earn their own bread."--Sarangadhar Samal, Director, NYSASDRI, Kalinga Eye Hospital, Orissa, India

Hello all,
I'm a relatively new RPCV living in ARKANSAS, but considering a move
to Dallas. I'll be in the city next weekend (March 30-Apr 1) for an
interview and would like to find out if anything is planned for that
weekend. I will be staying with a friend of mine but would love to
meet some RPCVs in the area on the off chance that I end up moving to
Dallas in the future. Thanks!

from  RPCV Shelagh Bocoum (shelaghbocoum@...)  Regarding the RPCV Hospitality Network Directory Available

We all remember traveling to different towns, villages and cities when we were PCVs. In each place we most often stayed with other volunteers. That sharing helped instill the “connection” to which we repeatedly refer. When the enthusiastic response is “I like these people” you know that something good is happening.

We'd like to let you know about the National Peace Corps Association's Hospitality Network Directory.  Will you be traveling somewhere and need a place to stay for a few days?  Would you like to host fellow RPCVs who are visiting your city?

The directory is arranged by state, and each listing includes the host’s location, email address and/or phone number, country of service and details on the type of space available. Many listings mention the local tourism attractions or include information such as “Amharic speakers especially welcome...plan arrival to accommodate ferry schedule...separate guest house...please help with dishes...the door is open!” Travelers call or email individuals in the directory and all arrangements are made between the two parties. Participation is based on mutual trust, respect and goodwill.

In addition to listings for close to 400 hosts across the US (and 15 internationally), the directory contains some interesting “factoids:”
  • 64% of hosts say “Kids are okay!”
  • 21% have wheelchair access
  • 94% request only $0-$5 per person per day (reimbursement for breakfast, showers, laundry)
  • 3% of visitors stay for 1 day
  • 38% stay for 2 days
  • 59% stay for more than 2 days
HOW IT WORKS:
RPCVs call individuals listed in the directory and all arrangements are made between the two parties ... simple! It's OK to say no!, ... as in "space not available." Directory is a guide only, all information and arrangements must be verified directly! (Addresses are not listed, only contact phone numbers and emails).

To purchase a directory, or to be listed in the updated directory which will be published early in April, visit http://www.rpcv.org/pages/sitepage.cfm?id=17

Dear RPCV,

I received an email from a 6th grade teacher from Keller ISD.  She is looking for someone who might be interested in sharing their Peace Corps experience with her students.  She would like someone to speak for about 30-45 minutes to two groups of about 50 students in each group.  They are doing these presentations from 9am to 2pm on May 8t and can work with your schedule within these timeframes.  Her class is currently studying about Asia, and would like it if the RPCV served in this part of the world, if possible.  Please contact her directly.

Message from her:

Good Morning!  I am a sixth grade teacher at Bear Creek Intermediate School in Keller.  Our team of classes (100 students) is having a "park day" on May 8th and we are trying to secure special events and speakers for the day.  Is this something your office can provide?  I appreciate any information your office could offer us.

I am sure that many in our community have heard of or even experienced
micro-lending in the developing world. Micro-lending as implied in the
name are very small loans, not grants or gifts, that the borrowers use
to start or expand businesses and has been very successful in lifting
many people out of poverty. As some of you may recall Muhammad Yunus
won the Nobel Peace Prize last year for developing micro financing in
Bangladesh. Check out www.kiva.org where you get information on the
borrowers, check their progress and loan repayments, set up your
lending portfolios. Skip going out for dinner and drinks one day this
week and you will have enough capital to become an international
banker. Nicholas Kristof had a very good article about this in the NY
Times on March 27th. I would have forwarded the article but our Yahoo
site does not allow us to send attachments. If you can't access the
article send me an e-mail and I will forward the article to you.

Hey All! Skye here - I wish I could make it to this pub crawl! I had such a lovely time at the Italian Cafe meeting some of the NTRPCV! However, I've got a newphew's birthday and work BBQ back to back and Charlie is in Phoenix besides.

I hope to make it to the next event! (Is that the highway cleanup).

Take care,
Skye

Hello All,

We had a terrific Earth Day clean up on Northwest
Hiway today! The Brannons, Courtney Bauman,
myself and Roger and Kathy Chapin participated. We
left 8 bags of trash, old crummy boards, and
construction debris for pick up by the city.

Afterward, we enjoyed lattes, cool drinks and snacks
at the Starbucks in the B&N store. Yippee! Great
turnout and fun time for all.

Several cars honked their appreciation to us as they
drove by...
I hope you all will join us in three months when we
clean again. We make a difference in Dallas!

Heads up for the Happy Hour TUESDAY at the Gingerman
and the fun-raising party May 5--Kathy Carson needs a
head count soon...
Brynne Sissom

Well, I hope that y'all have a successful
fund-raiser. I would love to visit Kathy's home.
However, I won't be able to attend. Have fun!
