Hi all,

Tonya Anderson, Event coordinator for Girls Scouts Unit 202 is looking for a speaker for March 9th. Unfortunately, i cannot make it that day since i will be going out of town, but I was wondering if anybody would like to be a speaker for her and talk about their Peace Corps experience. Her infomation and event information is the following. I believe the event is in Hurst.

Our Thinking Day is from 2-4, and we could schedule speaking period for 15-30 minutes. Is there anything that you would need?
Our focus this year is on “together we can save children’s lives” and “Every mother’s life and health is precious”.

Please contact her if you would be willing to come out and share your experience. She is CC'd in this email.

Thanks so much!!

Jill:

I have copied some leaders in the N Texas RPCV group  on this email, as well as our DFW recruiter Kyle Johnson.

In anticipation for your trip next month, I think these folks would be very interested and important for your plans, and I know they could be helpful in advertising for attendance at an event or meeting.

Gary, Ed and Maria:  Jill is a Recruitment and Placement Specialist with Peace Corps Response and will be visiting from HQ next month for the TESOL annual conference.  She is very interested in meeting with as many folks as possible to provide the latest, greatest info about Peace Corps Response.  I hope you can provide some assistance here.

Thanks, all.

Mike

Peace Corps volunteers deliver abroad and at home
Mention the Peace Corps, and you might get a surprised Is that still around? In fact, Peace Corps Volunteers are still serving in 76 countries, and the more than 200,000 Returned Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCVs) who have served since President Kennedy created the organization by executive order on March 1, 1961 continue to serve in their communities, classrooms, nonprofits and government agencies.
In South Florida, Alberto Ibarguen (Venezuela), president of the Knight Foundation; Donna Shalala (Iran), president of the University of Miami; Dee Redwine (Honduras) of Planned Parenthood Global; George Neary of the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau (West Indies) and Kristen Guskovict (Burkina Faso) of the Florida Center for Survivors of Torture are a few of the RPCVs in leadership positions.
In honor of Peace Corps Week, Feb. 24-March 2, state Rep. Jose Javier Rodriguez, a volunteer who served in Senegal, was to present a joint legislative tribute to Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of South Florida-The Colombia Project and the Coconut Grove Rotary Club for their collaborative effort to provide microloans to entrepreneurs in Colombia. More than 1,000 loans have been made. Thanks to a $17,650 Rotary International grant, a loan program will open this spring in Barranquilla, Colombia. It will be administered by the local Rotary Club and mentored by The Colombia Project.
To mark the third anniversary of the Haiti earthquake, RPCVSF raised $500 for Miami-based Health Through Walls, which provides medical care for prisoners in Haiti. Marty Mueller (Libya), who was the Peace Corps country director in Haiti, is on the board of HTW.
The RPCVSF Fair Trade Market raises awareness regarding the importance of fair trade at throughout South Florida. During the past nine years, Market organizer, Linda Whitmyre (Malaysia) has purchased $16,000 worth of items from fair-trade companies established by returned volunteers in developing countries. Profits on the sale of those items have been donated to organizations that benefit South Florida, Haiti, Colombia and Guatemala. One of the recipients was the Reading is Fundamental program, administered by Redlands Christian Migrant Association, led by Barbara Mainster, who served in Peru.
In answer to a challenge several years ago by Harve Mogul, president of the Miami-Dade United Way, who served in the Philippines, South Florida volunteers developed more programs to serve the local community. An eight-minute documentary, which premiered this week, showcased one of those programs the RPCVSF Annual Everglades Outing. It introduces more than 100 underprivileged children to the wonders of the Everglades each year.
Last year, RPCVSF presented its first Service Learning Awards to teachers who incorporate effective service learning programs in their classroom curriculum.
After completing her Peace Corps service in Niger, Virginia Emmons-McNaught helped start Educate Tomorrow, which provides mentoring to help foster children remain in school. The state provides tuition and a living allowance for foster children who remain in school after 18, while those who are not in school are totally on their own. Educate Tomorrows mentors encourage these foster kids to stay in school and make wise decisions.
Most returned volunteers are quick to admit they got far more than they gave. Peace Corps service is a tremendous learning experience, and while we worked hard to serve our host countries, our own country is the big winner because we bring all that we learn back home.
My own Peace Corps service gave me experience living in societies where dysfunctional government bureaucracies failed to meet citizens needs. During my 25 years of post-Peace Corps government service, I consciously drew on that experience to help agencies avoid the problems I saw overseas.
More directly, corporate America benefits from culturally savvy and language-proficient former Peace Corps volunteers who improve the efficacy of their overseas operations. The State Department and international aid agencies hire RPCVs who are already seasoned in the field.
President Kennedy once said that he hoped returning volunteers would enable America to achieve a more-enlightened foreign policy. It is human nature to fear what is different and unknown. Peace Corps service helps alleviate that fear by introducing Americans to the world so we can find common ground and learn to respect and understand each other. We still have a long way to go, but Peace Corps service nudges us along the right path.

Mike Herrington (Ecuador, 1964-66) has offered to host the March meeting. His church, First Congregational, UCC, on Trail Lake is sponsoring this fund raiser for a group of ten persons who will travel to Haiti in July to help with on-going recovery from the earthquake efforts.

The restaurant is Cafe Bella, located at 3548 South Hills Drive, 76109 in  the Westcliff Shopping Center near TCU. From 4:30 until 8:30 or when they close on Wednesday, March 6, they will donate 10% of every bill to the Haiti cause. Let's meet at our usual time of 7:00: Just be sure to mention either the church or Haiti to your waiter or up front when you pay the bill. They do not serve liquor, but you're welcome to bring your own.

Please let Mike know if you're coming so he can look out for you.

Spring is coming; so that means it is time for another Peace Corps International Dinner.

However, instead of emphasizing one region, "Eating around the World" is this spring's multi-ethnic theme.  Right now we are recruiting a few good cooks to prepare the food for our international feast on the evening on Saturday, April 27.

Mary Beth Mayer (RPCV/Honduras) and her husband Sam are this springs hosts.  While in the past, we have had an International Dinner in Southwest Fort Worth, a couple near the FW Zoo, and two in Arlington, this is the first time that this NTPCA event is being held in North Tarrant County (in the North Richland Hills area).  Mary Beth and Sam's address is:7801 Parkwood Plaza Drive, Fort Worth, 76137

(Dallasites, don't panic; it is easy to get there -- only about ten miles west of DFW airport.)

Each year the proceeds from the International Dinners are used to fund a Peace Corps Partnership project.  The RPCV cooks (who are admitted free to the dinner along with a spouse/friend) prepare the unique ethnic foods while the others (including non-RPCV friends and relatives) make a $20 donation to the Peace Corps Partnership Program.  (That is, $20 with advance reservations; otherwise, $25 at the door.)

Evites will soon be forthcoming for non-cooks.

In summary, we need 8 or 9 cooks to prepare an ethnic dish.  There is undoubtedly some unusual delicacy that you loved back in your old host country and are dying to make again.

In closing, please consider volunteering to cook and then notify Ed Hromatka by phone, text or email in the next ten days.  If you have any questions on the cooking arrangement, ask Ed.

SOS.  We still need about three more cooks for our International Dinner on Saturday, April 27.

Whatever your favorite edible concoction is,  prepare it, bring it on 4/27/13,  and we'll eat it.

As always, the cooks (and their spouse/friend) do not have to pay the traditional $20 donation per person to the Peace Corps Partnership program.

Hosts:      Mary Beth Mayer (RPCV/Honduras 77-80) and her husband Sam Sims.

Where:     7801 Parkwood Plaza Drive; Fort Worth; (Mary Beths cell 817-688-7164)

Please arrive at Sam's and Mary Beth's house in the North Richland Hills area by 6 PM so that we can set up.

By the way, soft drinks are included but bring your own wine, beer or other alcoholic beverage.

Please let Ed know what you are cooking by April 20 via email, phone, or text.

Steering Committee Next Sunday at 4 PM

Please join us at our next Steering Committee meeting on Sunday, May 5at 4:00 PM. Well meet at

Ozonas Grill and Bar, 4615 Greenville Avenue, Dallas to plan our summer activities, celebrate our recent activities,

and, perhaps most importantly, drink a few beers. Meet us on the patio, weather permitting.

By the way, Ozonas has the best chile rellenos in North Texas. .

Please note we do not have an Executive Board; we only have a Steering Committee that is open to anyone.

In other words, youdo not have to be elected to participate. For example, we do not have a President; we merely have

a Facilitator. Like the round table in Camelot, everyone who desires to take part has a voice. So come and join us.

For more info, call Gary at (214) 357-8337 or Ed at (214) 564-7201.
