RPCVs,
A friend asked me if I or any RPCV would be interested in speaking to a group of a dozen girl scouts on Sat morning 10am ish in Flower Mound. I think they are focusing especially on the environment somehow (how folks take care of theirs).
I certainly can do it, but had kind of thought to go bike riding.
Is anyone really itching to speak?
Let me know if interested.

Urgent!  African Cooks Needed for Saturday, April 21

What was your favorite dish while serving in Africa or Afro-Caribbean? Or do you have a favorite exotic dish which has a dash of Afro-flare?   Why don’t you share it?

We need about 10 volunteer cooks to prepare African-style dishes for our spring fundraiser dinner on April 21.  (By the way, it is easy to google new Afro-recipes.)

The idea is simple, a group of African RPCVs -- or any  adventurous cooks who want to try preparing African foods -- prepare the dinner and the others pay $20 (if paid in advance) for the food which is then donated to the Peace Corps Partnership program. For example, the proceeds of several of our last fund raisers have helped PCVs projects  in diverse places like Ukraine, Fiji, and Ecuador.   (Cooks and their spouse/significant other do not need to pay.)

In short, we need several cooks to prepare food enough to serve 15-20 people on April 21.  Won't you volunteer to cook?

By March 30, please respond  to  this cook request to Gillian Grant (RPCV/Central African Republic) at gilliansalad@... .

Returned Peace Corps Volunteers and internationally minded friends,

While several of you already responded, we still need a few more people to commit to bringing food for our African ;International dinner on April 21.

Each cook should bring food for about 15 people. The food can be home-made; google an African recipe if you need to do so.  Or you are welcome to pick up food from an African restaurant, like: http://www.urbanspoon.com/f/13/1200/Dallas-Fort-Worth/African-Restaurants.

Remember: Cooks attend the dinner and party for free.

The volunteer cooks should indicate whether they're making (1) a main course, (2) a side, or (3) a dessert.

Please deliver the food to Kathy Carson's house at 6246 St Albans Dr., Dallas, TX.

Cooks will need to arrive between 6 and 6:30 PM to help get the food set up for dinner at 7:00. Please bring a serving tool with your dish.   A 4 x 6” card with the name of the dish and country of origin is also fun for our guests because many will ask.

Please respond to this message or otherwise let Gillian know ASAP (gilliansalad@...) if we can count on you.

We're going to have a great party and it is for a terrific cause -- the Peace Corps Partnership program!

Dear members, at our Annual Meeting in January one of the major projects we voted on was to supply sports equipment to a Youth Sports Center in the Ukraine. This project was organized by Amanda Lucille Nelson-Duac of Granbury, TX. The equipment was purchased and a ceremony was held this week to celebrate the event. Pictures of the event are now posted on our Yahoo site (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/North_Texas_Peace_Corps/photos/album/1102872615/pic/list). You can also go to the photo section and look under photos to access the pictures.  I have also attached a letter from Amanda's Ukrainian counterparts about the event. Our congratulations to Amada.

I could help cook if (1) someone would provide African recipe(s) and (2) buy the food. Since Charlie has been off work since February 9 from knee surgery, our funds are very limited.

Mike

P. S. Maybe I could ask Katrina Dixon, a brand new volunteer now in Burkina Faso, for a recipe idea. It still blows my mind that today's PCV's have access to things like the Internet and cell phones.

Subject: another update!

We continue forward with the bee project!  Today we received the bees.  They are all happy in their new homes!
This past Friday we had a training session consisting of a lecture and hands on experience with a hive in San Antonio de Ibarra taught by the cousin of one of the group members.  He talked about basic management, the components of the hive, the lifespan of a bee, honey harvest, hive duplication and some common pests typically found.  Everyone was enthused to find out that currently honey in Ecuador is selling for $7.00 a liter.  Then the group members had the opportunity to open up a “nucleo” hive, consisting of just 5 frames of bees instead of the normal 10.  They identified the queen, workers, and drones as well as eggs and larvae.  And no one got stung!
Today we had the bees dropped off in town at about 6am.  They need to be transported early in the morning so that they don’t cook in the back of the truck.  I went with the man who breeds the bees to everyone’s site.  They have diverse homes.  2 hives went to live in a high elevation cornfield.  3 hives went to live in a blackberry patch while 3 more were brought to the base of a terraced, integrated farm.  In my time I have left here (3 more weeks) I will be visiting the hives with the group members to moderate the growth of the bee colonies.
I will keep you updated!
Sincerely,
Betsy Clark

PS I will send pictures soon but it seems that all of my flash drives have viruses on them which makes getting the pictures to the internet cafe kind of tricky.

The National Peace Corps Association and the Peace Corps are kicking off the next 50 years of Peace Corps by focusing on the “Third Goal”: bringing the world back home. One way we are doing this is through a series of four Third Goal Expos – free events open to the Peace Corps community, educators, and the general public.  Designed in collaboration with local NPCA member groups and Regional Recruitment Offices, these expos will showcase the countries and cultures where Peace Corps Volunteers have served, highlight Volunteers’ experiences and projects, and introduce educators to free resources to bring the world into their classrooms via the World Wise Schools program.

Save the dates on your calendar to attend one or more of these exciting Expos:

Complete Expo details and free registration will be available shortly on the NPCA website.

Important:  Please note that while you are receiving this e-mail from us here at NPCA, the Peace Corps (agency) maintains a separate contact database.  To stay abreast of Peace Corps agency updates and learn about events taking place near you, be sure to update your contact information with the Peace Corps by visiting their website at www.peacecorps.gov/rpcv/info.

I look forward to seeing you!

Yesterday I attended an exit conference at the PC training center just outside of Bamako where the 185 Mali PCVs are assembled and await evacuation.  In reaction to the recent coup, the escalating separatist war in the north, and the economic sanctions imposed on Mali by the West Africa economic union (ECOWAS), Peace Corps has decided to suspend its Mali program and all 185 of the current volunteers are being sent home.  Though this hopefully will not be the end of Peace Corps in Mali and it will be able to start back up once the current situation is resolved, but given how long that process may take it is unlikely that any but a few of these current volunteers will be returning.

Needless to say this was an emotional moment for all involved: the volunteers, the PC staff and the few local counterparts who were able to attend.  Last week, at the time of the consolidation of volunteers into the regional centers, no one believed that a general evacuation was imminent so many of the volunteers just quickly packed a bag thinking they would be returning to their sites in a few days.  But that was not to be the case and today much of the discussion at the exit conference was about how to get farewell messages to the people the volunteers lived and worked with for so many months and in many cases years.  The feelings of remorse, grief and confusion filled the air at the conference.

As one who was among the early groups of PCVs to work in Mali (for me it was 1973 to 1975) and to now witness this suspension and evacuation: I too feel many of these same emotions.  It seems like just yesterday Rebecca and I were hosting the party to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Peace Corps in Mali and the most recent batch of volunteers were finishing their language training being sworn in as volunteers. And now everything is at a standstill.

And I too am being evacuated—the MCC has also suspended its program here and the family members of all embassy and USAID staff are now scheduled to depart by next Wednesday.  Unfortunately Rebecca must remain to continue to manage the transition of the USAID program to a more humanitarian assistance focus.  I should be back in New Mexico by the end of next week.

Let us all hope this situation in Mali is resolved soon.

By the way—Emily sends her regards to you all and asked me to convey her thanks for all the support the NMPCA has given her over this past year.  She will be sending you a personal note when she gets settled.

And Rebecca and I also want to thank you all for your thoughts and support during this time.

Hope to see you soon.

Greg Polk

Although not everyone in NTPCA may know Katrina, whom I met a year ago at the "anniversary house party" I hosted at my church in Fort Worth, I thought everyone might like to know what is happening with the Mali PCVs, who have been evacuated.

Mike

Hi Mike!
Everyone is safe here in Burkina Faso, including the Mali PCVs who were evacuated here. Yes, I've tried both recipes. I prefer the okra stew more than the rice. But to avoid the extra steps and time, please go with the rice recipe.
Thanks a million!
Katrina

I am concerned with what is happening in next door Mali.

I think I will cook the easy rice recipe rather than the okra stew/soup, which I don't think might not go over very well with Texas palates. Have you tried either recipe?

Mike
