Hi-

I'd like to suggest an activity for the North Texas RPCVs in the area.  Every six months Fort Worth Southside has what they call- Arts Goggle- a "gallery crawl".  They shut down a couple of streets just south of downtown (Magnolia street and Forest Park), turn all the businesses and restaurants into art galleries for local artists, and give out free wine and beer.  It's a great way to support local artists, and have a little fun.  They haven't posted the date yet- but my guess will be that it will happen sometime in Feb. or March.  It's an afternoon/early evening event- but there is always downtown Fort Worth afterwards (free parking garages and free meters).  I know it's early, but wanted to throw it out there if anyone is interested.

Good Morning Current CERT Members:

Please see two schedules for upcoming basic CERT classes. Please feel free to forward this information (make sure to send attachments too) to interested parties that may benefit from the information.  The attached registration form should be completed and returned to me.

Additionally, please feel free to attend one or more of the modules if you would like to refresh your CERT skills.  Those of you that have taken the CERT Train-the Trainer class and have not yet begun to shadow and or teach a CERT module or two to get your feet wet – PLEASE start now!  Let me know when you would like to show up.

It is always a good idea to attend the last class (graduation) to observe, assist with moulage or be a victim (we are usually ALWAYS in need of victims).  We would love to have you come out and help and learn!

Please let me know if you are interested in participating in any way.

According to the Dallas Morning News story on page 14A today (12/22/11), Peace Corps is withdrawing immediately from Honduras and is phasing out in El Salvador and Guatemala.

Here are two press releases from DC:

Peace Corps Reviews Operations in Honduras

  • December 21, 2011 -- The Peace Corps is conducting an ongoing review of the security environment in Honduras, and has cancelled its next volunteer training class while this review is being conducted.

All 158 currently serving volunteers are safe and accounted for and will participate in a conference in January before returning to the United States on administrative leave. Peace Corps will review the safety and security climate in Honduras before continuing with volunteer operations.

“The safety and security of all Peace Corps volunteers is the agency’s highest priority,” said Peace Corps Director Aaron S. Williams. “During this time, we are going to conduct a full review of the program. We thank the people of Honduras for their strong support of Peace Corps over the years.”

Peace Corps has operated in Honduras since 1963. More than 5,500 Americans have served in Honduras since the program was established, working with communities on projects focused on health and HIV/AIDS prevention, water sanitation and youth development.

Families with questions or concerns may contact the Peace Corps’ Counseling and Outreach unit, which maintains a 24-hour, 7 days a week duty system. The telephone number during standard office hours is (800) 424-8580, extension 1470; the after-hours number is (202) 692-1470.

Peace Corps Reviews Operations in El Salvador and Guatemala

WASHINGTON, D.C., December 21, 2011 – The Peace Corps has cancelled its January 2012 volunteer training classes for El Salvador and Guatemala. Due to ongoing security concerns, the agency is enhancing operational support to currently serving volunteers in these countries.

All currently serving volunteers in El Salvador and Guatemala are safe and accounted for. The Peace Corps will continue to closely monitor and assess the safety and security climate and enhance volunteer support in these countries.

The Peace Corps operated in El Salvador between 1962 and 1979, and returned in 1993. Over 2,000 Americans have served in El Salvador since the program was established, working with communities on projects focused on community, economic, and youth development. There are 113 volunteers currently serving in El Salvador.

The Peace Corps has operated in Guatemala since 1963. Over 4,800 Americans have served in Guatemala since the program was established, working with communities on projects focused on health, youth development, environment and agriculture. There are 222 volunteers currently serving in Guatemala.

Families with questions or concerns may contact the Peace Corps’ Counseling and Outreach unit, which maintains a 24-hour, 7 days a week duty system. The telephone number during standard office hours is (800) 424-8580, extension 1470; the after-hours number is (202) 692-1470.

The National Peace Corps Association (NPCA) today reported:

"A Fiscal Year 2012 funding package that includes level funding of $375 million for the Peace Corps was signed into law Friday afternoon by President Obama.

The possibility of Peace Corps seeing a slight cut in its funding appears to be averted – at least for now.  Last week, when the House of Representatives supported a spending package that included level funding for Peace Corps, they also voted for separate legislation to support an extra $8 billion in federal disaster relief funding.  Additionally, to pay for disaster relief the House voted for an across-the-board spending cut of 1.8 percent for non-defense discretionary spending.

Had that cut taken effect, Peace Corps could have expected a funding reduction of approximately $7 million.  However, the Senate defeated the across-the-board recision, while voting in favor of both disaster assistance and the FY 2012 budget package.

Peace Corps did suffer a 6.5% cut during congressional budget battles earlier this year. * * *"

This sounds great!  I'm a RPCV (Lesotho 03-05) in Fort Worth.  I just finished grad school, so I have more time now.  I would love to team up with other FW RPCVs and help sponsor some events - as was discussed in some previous messages.  Happy new year everyone!

I actually live in the Lofts right there where the art festival is.  My landlord helps to host the whole event.  If people are interested, I would love to have you all over before/after for drinks and whatever.

See you all then!

Dear J Michael:

Thank you for contacting me about funding for the Peace Corps.    I appreciate you support for this program.

The United States Peace Corps initiatives for social and economic development across the world are critical.    I believe the Peace Corps is a key tool for expanding our understanding with other cultures and vice versa.   This especially hits close to home for many Texans –   we are the third largest state with the highest number of Peace Corps volunteers.

As the Chairwoman of the State -Foreign Operations Appropriations Subcommittee, I work with other Members of Congress to fund the State Department and various foreign assistance initiatives.    The Peace Corps is one of the programs my subcommittee oversees funding for.   On December 16, 2011 the House passed the final spending bill to fund federal agencies and programs for the rest of the 2012 fiscal year.  You will be glad to know in my portion of the funding bill, the Peace Corps was fully funded at $375 million – this was $75,000 above FY11 levels.    At a time when many government programs are getting scaled back or cut entirely, I thought you would be happy to hear the Peace Corps  was not one of them.

Again, thank you for contacting me. Please continue to keep me informed on the issues that are important to you. For more information on my work in Congress, please feel free to visit the 12th District's web site,  http://kaygranger.house.gov .

Sincerely,

Kay Granger
Member of Congress

Happy New Year, NTPCA yahoo group:

Since September, when I moved from Peace Corps headquartes to be Regional Manager here, I've met many of you and hope to meet many more in the coming weeks and months.  I'll be at the meeting January 28, and look forward to meeting more of you and hearing your ideas about building a stronger collaboration between the RPCV groups and the regional recruiting office.

One way is for us to share information with you.  As part of our efforts to keep you informed and support your work in North Texas, I have asked LaShonda Walker, our Public Affairs Specialists here, to send press stories to your Facebook page about volunteers from our region currently serving in the Peace Corps.  I am always impressed with the work and service the volunteers are doing, and I think you will be, too.  Just this morning I met a young woman from Breckenridge, Tx and TCU, visiting home for the holidays from her service in Uganda.

Until we meet soon, I hope you watch for and enjoy the stories we send.

Thanks for your service and support.

Dear Mike,

As an historic year for the Peace Corps community ends, we look back at key advocacy efforts and moments over the last twelve months, with tremendous gratitude and thanks for your contributions and assistance.

Sargent Shriver
Robert Sargent Shriver Jr.

1915 - 2011

Every time we schedule a meeting with a lawmaker, every moment we make a phone call, send an email, sign a petition or participate in a rally, we act in the shadow of Peace Corps' founding director, Sarge Shriver.

Sadly, Sarge passed away on January 18th, at the beginning of the 50th anniversary year of the unique and amazing federal agency for which he was so central.

Fifty years ago, it was Shriver's passion, tenacity and personal touch that made all the difference in winning congressional passage of the Peace Corps Act.  The documentary film American Idealist profiles that effort:  As Harris Wofford notes in the film, "Sarge...resolved to see every member of Congress personally.  Sarge at one point said 'You know, I've seen every member of Congress but one.'  And it turned out later that that member of Congress was actually dead!"

Bill Moyers accompanied Shriver on most of those meetings and summed them up this way:  "I've never seen anyone focus more intently on the member of Congress sitting right there.  He did his homework, he had good research, but he also just relied on looking at that Congressman right in the eye and saying Don't you believe in young people?  Don't you believe in American Idealism? Don't you believe that we've got a mission in the world?  Sure you do!  If you were younger, you'd be signing up for this yourself!"

Many from the Peace Corps community turned out for the memorial service and funeral to offer condolences and respect to this 20th century champion of service.  NPCA also collected messages of condolence from the Peace Corps community which were delivered to Tim Shriver and the other Shriver children.

Follow this link to the memorial website for Sarge Shriver.  Learn more about his life, read the many tributes, or post your own tribute.  Forward the link to others you know who may not be aware of the many contributions Sarge Shriver made to our country and to citizens around the world.

50th Anniversary Capitol Hill Advocacy Day

It was fifty years to the day.

On September 22, 1961, the original Peace Corps Act was signed into law, following approval by the United States Senate and House of Representatives.

On September 22, 2011 an estimated 500 members of the Peace Corps community converged on Capitol Hill to ask their lawmakers to honor the past, present and future of the Peace Corps.  NPCA's Capitol Hill Advocacy Day served as the kickoff event during a five-day celebration of Peace Corps' 50th in Washington D.C.

Wearing buttons saying "Ask me why the Peace Corps matters" and armed with briefing materials and personal testimonies, advocates swarmed across the Capitol Hill grounds, holding more than 300 constituent meetings and dozens of other informal meetings in hallways, corridors and congressional offices. The photo above of Texas RPCVs meeting with Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison is representative of those gatherings.  Participants not only connected with their elected leaders, but compared notes and built a camaraderie with fellow advocates from nearly every state in the nation.

Many of the participants turned out the night before for an orientation session to prepare for the historic day.  The morning of September 22nd began with a gathering that featured inspirational words from RPCV Congressmen Sam Farr (D-CA) and John Garamendi (D-CA).

The day closed with a reception that included remarks from50th Lowey Representative Farr, fellow RPCV Congressman Mike Honda (D-CA), Senator Johnny Isakson (R-GA), Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-NY) and Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH).

The activity yielded results.  More than 60 names were added as co-sponsors to key Peace Corps legislation, constituents had more than 75 face-to-face meetings with lawmakers, and several dozen meetings were held with offices of the members of the large freshman class of the 112th Congress.

The success of the Capitol Hill Advocacy Day could not have been accomplished without tremendous support from many volunteers.  Special thanks to those volunteers who provided more than 500 hours of service in the days leading up to and including advocacy day.  We were also fortunate to have tremendous leadership from a number of experienced advocates who served as team leaders to help with coordination and logistics throughout the day.

Just as important as the results from the day was the energy and enthusiasm expressed by many of the participants, and the potential for that energy to lead to expanded action in 2012 and beyond.

One participant described the 50th Advocacy Day as "a fantastic way to participate in government in such a direct way to promote a cause I believe in very sincerely."

And - another advocate was even more enthusiastic, saying "it was the highlight of the weekend! (and I say this without the rest of the weekend even happening yet)."

Mike Wood
NPCA's Annual National Day of Action in Support of the Peace Corps

For the seventh consecutive year, our advocacy program organized a Captiol Hill Day of Action in early March to coincide with Peace Corps Week, and to make the case to Congress that strong support for the Peace Corps yields positive, long-lasting dividends both here at home and in dozens of countries abroad.

While designed primarily to provide a single day in which supporters from all around the country can e-mail, phone or fax their lawmakers in a collective show of support, the Day of Action has also been attracting a steady and growing presence on Capitol Hill.

For Guatemala RPCV Mike Wood of Chicago (center above), the Day of Action was an opportunity to discuss Peace Corps issues with not one, but both of his Senators, Republican Mark Kirk (l) and Democrat Richard Durbin (r).

Fifty-one participants representing 17 states and the District of Columbia took part in 105 face-to-face meetings with congressional offices last March.  Nearly 50th Cardinhalf of the meetings were constituent meetings, such as a meeting (l) of Maryland RPCVs with Senator Ben Cardin.  Advocates also made contacts with nearly twenty members of the large freshman class of the 112th Congress.  Advocates made the case for robust Peace Corps funding and began the process of building support for Peace Corps Commemorative legislation.

Follow this link to watch a video about the 2011 Day of Action.

Get ready to take part in the 2012 Day of Action.  Thursday, March 1st will be the date we conduct our eighth annual Day of Action.  Follow this link to learn more and to get involved!

Kumar and Coble
2011 Advocacy on the Home Front
Advocacy during Peace Corps' 50th anniversary year didn't only occur in the hallways and offices of Capitol Hill.

In August, the NPCA launched its first coordinated initiative to support state and congressional district meetings with members of Congress. The first year results were impressive:
  • Advocates in at least 14 states held at least 25 meetings all across the country.
  • Advocates in Tennessee and Wisconsin engaged in well coordinated efforts to organize multiple in-state meetings with members of their state congressional delegations.
  • Large constituent gatherings were held with lawmakers in Munsonville, New Hampshire (featuring Senator Jeanne Shaheen), Framingham, Massachusetts (featuring Congressman Ed Markey) and Farmington, New Mexico (featuring Congressman Ben Lujan).

District meetings also yielded positive results.  In Greensboro, North Carolina, former Guyana Country Director Kumar Lakhavani (pictured above) met with his Congressman, Howard Coble.  A few days later, Kumar had a message on his voicemail from the Congressman, informing him that based on their meeting, he decided to co-sponsor both the Kate Puzey Volunteer Protection Act and Peace Corps Commemorative legislation.  It was the first time Congressman Coble had signed on to Peace Corps legislation.

After hosting a 50th Anniversary House Party in March, Sharon Bettinelli (Tunisia 73-75) reached out to attendees to coordinate a meeting with the Oakland office of Congresswoman Barbara Lee.  Sharon was joined by Roger Olpin (Tunisia 73-75) and Alex Deans (Morocco 08-10).  It wasn't long after this meeting that Congresswoman Lee became a co-sponsor of the Kate Puzey Volunteer Protection Act.

Honoring the Past:

Advancing Peace Corps Commemorative Legislation

Our 50th Anniversary advocacy centered on honoring the past, present and future of the Peace Corps.

To honor the past, advocates asked lawmakers to approve legislation that would allow the establishment of a commemorative work near the National Mall to mark the lasting historical significance of the founding of the Peace Corps in 1961 and the ideals that Peace Corps service represents.

For the second consecutive year, RPCV Congressman Sam Farr (above) led efforts in the House of Representatives to pass the legislation (H.R. 854).  Congressman Farr's effort was bolstered by the bi-partisan support of 147 fellow lawmakers.  At the close of 2011, the House legislation awaits final consideration by the Natural Resources Committee.

There was even more progress in the Senate.  For the first time,Advocacy 2011 Portman companion legislation was introduced in the Senate in 2011. Senate Bill 1421 was introduced by Senators Rob Portman (R-OH) and Mark Udall (D-CO).  By the end of 2011, the growing list of co-sponsors had reached 14, and the legislation received unanimous approval from the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. The next step for the legislation is consideration on the Senate floor.

As 2012 begins, securing final passage of commemorative legislation will be a top priority of our legislative agenda.

2011 Casey and Karestan

Honoring the Present:

Peace Corps Safety and Security Legislation

While the 50th anniversary provided a forum for many of the accomplishments of the Peace Corps over the years, attention was also given to tragedy:  The 2009 murder of a Benin volunteer, sexual assault and other acts of violence, and serious questions regarding the agency's efforts to adequately respond, protect and support some volunteers who had been subjected to various forms of violence.

Members of the Peace Corps community who were directly impacted by these tragedies organized to take action with equal amounts of determined resolve and positive attitude so that the end result would be a stronger and improved Peace Corps program.  South Africa RPCV Casey Frazee (above left, with Niger RPCV Karestan Koenen) is the founder of First Response Action, an organization that was formed to mobilize and support individuals who survived sexual assault while serving in the Peace Corps.  Two years ago, we featured Casey's initiative in WorldView magazine.

The family of slain Benin volunteer Kate Puzey also formed Kate's Voice, an organization established to make sure future Peace Corps Volunteers are provided with protections and confidentiality when sharing sensitive information.

The issues of physical and sexual assault against volunteers became a focal point in the national media.  Congress also intervened, with the House Foreign Affairs Committee holding a hearing in May that received broad attention.

Working with these advocacy groups and with the Peace Corps, Senator Johnny Isakson (R-GA) and Congressman Ted Poe (R-TX) introduced the Kate Puzey Peace Corps Volunteer Protection Act of 2011. As Peace Corps was already in the process of implementing reforms to address key issues, lawmakers and advocates stated that legislation was needed to ensure that attention and focus would remain in the future, regardless of changes to Peace Corps leadership.  In June, NPCA issued a letter expressing support for the legislation while noting some areas for potential improvement.

The Puzey legislation was one of three issues raised by advocates during congressional meetings in August and September.  Those meetings helped to bring a nearly 33% increase in the number of congressional co-sponsors.

Speaking to advocates at the September 22nd Capitol Hill Advocacy Isakson 50th ReceptionDay, Senator Isakson (l) reported that Senate action on the Puzey legislation was almost finalized.  Four days later, the legislation was unanimously approved by the Senate.  Final, unanimous House action on the legislation was approved on November 1st.  President Obama signed the Puzey bill into law on November 21st.

Congratulations to First Response Action, Kate's Voice, a bi-partisan group of lawmakers and Peace Corps leadership for working collaboratively to pass this landmark legislation.  Congratulations as well to all advocates who took action!

Honor the Future:  Provide Strong Funding for the Peace Corps

The success of the Peace Corps requires resources.  In an atmosphere of deficit reduction and budget cutting, a strong constituent voice is needed more than ever to promote funding support for the agency.  While 2011 saw some reduction in Peace Corps funding, the collective voice of Peace Corps advocates and Capitol Hill champions minimized the impact.

Funding for many federal programs was the focus of a congressional showdown in April.  Still at work on finalizing a budget for the 2011 Fiscal Year, lawmakers barely avoided a government shutdown and50th Dixons finalized a spending package that included an 11% reduction in the International Affairs Budget. Within this reduction was a $26 Million reduction (6.5%) in Peace Corps funding.  While significant, the cut was much less than a $70 Million cut that had been recommended by the House of Representatives.

As Congress turned to the Fiscal Year 2012 budget, NPCA worked with congressional leaders to support President Obama's original request of $440 Million.  Advocates helped secure the signatures of more than 100 members of the House on a Dear Colleague letter supporting the President's Peace Corps funding request.

When the House of Representatives Appropriations Subcommittee for State and Foreign Operations released its funding recommendations in July, overall discretionary spending was reduced by 18%, but the recommendation for Peace Corps was to hold firm at $375 Million.  Subcommittee Chair Kay Granger (R-TX) singled out Peace Corps in part of her remarks.  Along with thanking RPCV Congressman Sam Farr for his commitment to the Peace Corps,
50th Hansen ClarkeGranger said "this subcommittee understands just how important this program is."

Following further advocacy by supporters in August and September, the Senate Appropriations Committee made a similar recommendation of level funding for Peace Corps in Fiscal Year 2012.  Despite some challenges in the closing days of the year, level funding for Peace Corps was sustained through next September 30th.

National Survey of Peace Corps Community Demonstrates Impact

The Peace Corps is about various forms of impact, both overseas and here at home.  As individuals, our community possesses literally tens of thousands of stories and anecdotes that demonstrate the power and meaning of the experience.

Using the 50th anniversary as a backdrop, the NPCA collaborated with Civic Enterprises and Peter D. Hart Research Associates to survey returned Peace Corps volunteers.  The purpose?  to gain further insight into their reasons for joining Peace Corps, what their experiences were like, how Peace Corps impacted their career choices, how to make international volunteerism more relevant and effective, and more.

Outreach to the community resulted in survey responses from more than 11,000 eligible participants, making it the largest survey ever conducted to assess the impact of Peace Corps over the decades.

The findings from the survey included the following:

  • More than eight in ten (82 percent) of RPCVs said their service was very or fairly effective in helping promote a better understanding of Americans in the communities where Volunteers served, with one-third reporting it was very effective.
  • 90 percent of those surveyed rated their Peace Corps experience as excellent or very good, while 98 percent said they would recommend the Peace Corps to their child, grandchild or other close family member.
  • More than half (55 percent) of all RPCVs reported that they regularly volunteer in their local communities, more than double the national rate for volunteering in the United States.

Follow this link to learn more about the survey.

Petri Award

Honoring RPCV Congressional Leaders

The NPCA honored two RPCV congressional leaders early in 2011 to mark their continued public service and leadership to the Peace Corps community during the 50th anniversary year.

The annual gathering of our Director's Circle included a Capitol Hill briefing which featured one of this year's award recipients. Wisconsin Congressman Tom Petri (Somalia 66-67), the dean of the RPCV Members of Congress, was recognized for his longstanding support of the Peace Corps.  Special recognition was given to his assistance in the past two years to advance Peace Corps commemorative legislation.

And then there's Sam Farr (Colombia 64-66).  The California Congressman is sometimes referred to as "Mr. Peace Corps" by his50th Farr Award colleagues for his steadfast and passionate leadership on all Peace Corps issues. Congressman Farr was similarly honored for his leadership at a special March 1st 50th anniversary House Party held in Washington DC.

Other RPCV lawmakers distinguished themselves in 2011. California Congressman John Garamendi (Ethiopia 66-68) organized an hour-long tribute to Peace Corps service on the House floor on March 1st.

All four current RPCVs in the House collaborated on a special 50th anniversary op-ed that was published in Politico on March 2nd.

Lawmakers were also featured speakers at the Peace Corps exhibit at the 2011 Smithsonian Folklife Festival.  Congressman Mike Honda (El Salvador 65-67) spent time on the "Peace Porch" to talk about his volunteer experience, Congressman Farr took a turn in the Peace Corps kitchen...Even former Congressman and current U.S. Senate candidate Chris Shays (Fiji 68-70) took time to urge visitors to consider Peace Corps service.

New and Traditional Media

Why does Peace Corps matter to America, to the state where you live, the community you reside?  That's one of the key "bringing the world back home" questions we've been increasingly asking you during our encounters.

We love hearing your stories - not just about how you made a difference as a Peace Corps Volunteer, but also how you continue to make a difference as a returned PCV.  Those stories are not only interesting and inspiring, they are also effective tools in our advocacy, as they demonstrate the ongoing benefit our nation receives from the Peace Corps community - far beyond two years of service overseas.

Every week in 2011, we provided important updates and featured advocates on our advocacy blog, found on our website.

Our congratulations to the many advocates across the country who seized upon the 50th anniversary year to submit articles and commentaries in local and regional newspapers.  The successful efforts of Peter Bourque (Cote D'Ivoire 73-75) of Tucson, Arizona and Timothy Rake (Senegal 73-75) of Eugene, Oregon are just two of dozens of examples of this important outreach to build recognition and support for the Peace Corps beyond our immediate community.

When we can, we get outside of Washington and connect with you personally.  In 2011, Advocacy Coordinator Jonathan Pearson traveled to six states and seventeen cities, connecting with about 300 members of the Peace Corps community along the way.

Travel highlights included the following:
  • Attending two of the 50th Anniversary Regional Expos and having the opportunity to meet members of the Peace Corps community in Philadelphia and Raleigh.50th Charleston Cake
  • Traveling to Charleston, West Virginia for a 50th Anniversary celebration that included the announcement of the newest NPCA member group.
  • A week-long trip across central and southeastern Texas, including advocacy training workshops in Fort Worth, Austin and College Station.

We're excited to hit the road in 2012!  Look for updates on travel plans, workshops and other events in the coming months.

2011 Interns
Thank You Interns!

As advocates, you are responsible for bringing attention and voice to global public policy issues, including and especially the Peace Corps.  Many of you volunteered at critical moments during the year to help us prepare for major advocacy initiatives.

And then, there are the 2011 advocacy interns.  Throughout the year we were fortunate to recieve assistance from some extremely dedicated high school and college students.  Given that we are a small non-profit organization, we rely on our interns to do much more than stuff envelopes and answer the telephone.  If you viewed one of our 2011 advocacy videos, there's a good chance it was edited by an intern.  If you found our Capitol Hill advocacy orientation materials helpful, you can thank our interns for helping with preparations.  If you took part in our August District Advocacy Days, you were assisted by an intern.

Our interns keep our advocacy operations moving forward.  We are so grateful to Liana Bennett, Brooke Byington, Ty Diringer, Greg Doolittle, Jocelyn Fong, Zoe Quint and Susan Stine for their many contributions.  Thanks for assisting us during this historic year!

50th
Boxer

Not the End...Rather, the Beginning

On the afternoon of September 22nd, as California Senator Barbara Boxer turned into the atrium of the Hart Senate Office Building, she was greeted by more than fifty constituents.  While they were from different parts of the state, represented different generations and had varied backgrounds, what did bring them together was their experience in and love of the Peace Corps.

One of the most satisfying elements of the 50th activities were the comments from so many participants that the anniversary year energized them.  There was a strong interest in re-connecting with the broad Peace Corps community and re-committing to the ideals of Peace Corps service.

That was one of the key goals of the National Peace Corps Association:  That 50th anniversary activities - while celebrating the past - would be forward looking and serve as a catalyst for future mobilization.

That is certainly the case with our advocacy efforts.  As 2011 becomes a reflection, we look forward to getting ready to take the first steps into the next fifty years of service and advocacy for a more peaceful and prosperous world, enhanced by the Peace Corps experience.

Happy New Year.  We look forward to your continued engagement in 2012!

SHOULD OLD ACQUAINTANCE BE FORGOT?  HELP NPCA FIND ALL 250,000!

One of the most common occurrences during the 50th anniversary year came from RPCVs or former Peace Corps staff trying to find a former colleague.

No one has the complete list of 200,000 individuals who served as Peace Corps volunteers, not to mention the thousands of additional individuals who served as staff.

One of NPCA's New Year's resolutions is to intensify the search so we can fully come together as a community.

NOTE:  At tonight's (1/19/12) NTPCA  Happy Hour at El Inca Cafe in Carrolton, Jim G came to his first ever NTPCA event, mentioned that one of his RPCV friends from his Dominican Republic training group is now an astronaut, was in space in 2009,  and is scheduled to go to the International Space Station for six months later in 2012.  I managed to find this story about his friend: Joe Acaba.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The first returned Peace Corps Volunteer to serve as a NASA astronaut, Joe Acaba served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Dominican Republic (1994-96).
Acaba cited his Peace Corps service as inspiration for his career as an Astronaut. Says Acaba, "Peace Corps has been a fantastic influence on my life. To those of you who are getting ready to go, best of luck. To those of who are Returned Volunteers, thanks for your service. And to all of you who support Peace Corps Volunteers around the world, you are doing a great service to your country."
In addition to being the first returned Peace Corps Volunteer to serve as an astronaut, Acaba is a first-generation American and the first person of Puerto Rican heritage to serve as an astronaut. In addition to proudly carrying the flag of Puerto Rico with him in space, he also flew a Peace Corps flag aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery.
Before serving as a Volunteer, Acaba studied geology and earned a Bachelor's degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara and a Master's degree from the University of Arizona.
Acaba was named as a NASA astronaut candidate in May 2004. Nearly five years later, in March 2009, he performed a spacewalk as mission specialist educator aboard Space Shuttle Discovery’s STS-119. His mission successfully delivered the final pair of power generating solar array wings and truss element to the International Space Station.

NTPCA Annual Meeting & Pot Luck Dinner: This Saturday, January 28th, at 6:00 PM

Once again it is time for the North Texas Peace Corps Association (NTPCA) Annual Business Meeting.  We will review the achievements of 2011 including the Gala Dinner and fundraiser, Hearts and Hammers, the pool party and other activities during 2011.

A major task will again be deciding which Peace Corps Partnership programs to support with the funds raised during the year. We will review the available projects open prior to the meeting and select some five or six to discuss and decide on for funding. If you are interested in looking at all the projects that are open for funding go to https://www.peacecorps.gov/index.cfm?shell=donate.contribute.donatenow for further details.

We will start with a short reception at 6:00pm and the business meeting at 6:30pm. A potluck dinner will follow. Coffee and soft drinks will be provided and BYOB for those preferring other types of refreshments. The meeting will also vote on electing new officers to help run the NTPCA during the year. We are always open for people willing to actively participate in the leadership of our group or in various projects we have during the year. It is also a time to talk about what is going on with the Peace Corps and the National Peace Corps Association as well as where we envision taking the NTPCA over the next year. Our discussion will depend on what is at hand at the time. So even if you are not intending to run for office, you may still be interested in attending to learn what the NTPCA is doing.

If you are interested in taking a more active role the organization please forward your interest to Gary Zimny (zimzim9@...) prior to the meeting.

This year’s annual meeting will be at the home of Roger and Kathy Chapin at 613 Harvest Glen Dr., Richardson, TX, just north of the Richland Community College. Exit north on Abrams from I-635 just east of US 75. Drive north one mile and turn right on Walnut St. Go about 0.3 mi. and turn left on Richland Park. Go four blocks and turn right on Harvest Glen Drive to reach the house.

1)   Report on Our Meeting of January 28 (Our Only Official Meeting)

Although our annual business meeting was rather sparsely attended, we appreciate those RPCVs and friends who came and kept the NTPCA officially in business for another year.

Moreover, we especially appreciate Conrad Orsteen, the Executive Director of the North Texas Council for International Visitors (and a ten-year US AID official), for address our group.  Further, Mike McKay, the Southwest Region PC Recruiting Office Manager, brought us up to date on the last happenings in the Peace Corps budget situation, new PCV safety and security procedures, recruiting area changes, and various happenings in the PC national office.  Thank you to both.

2)  NTPCA Steering Committee Leaders

NTPCA does not have an "Executive Board" sending orders from the top; instead it elects some positions to coordinate its Steering Committee which is open to all members.

The 2012 Co-Facilitators are Gary Zimny and Kathryn Anderle; the Secretary is again Gillian Grant; the TREASURERS are still Roger Chapin and Kathy Carson; and the NEWSLETTER CO-EDITORS are still Ed Hromatka and Garrett Suave

3)  Selection of Peace Corps Partnership Projects

Using mostly the profit from the Fiftieth Anniversary Gala in Addison of September 8, 2011, NTPCA members approved a total donation of $4,750 to the Peace Corps Partnership. The breakdown was $3,228.22 to the Youth Sports Center in the Ukraine; $594 for the community ovens in the Dominican Republic, and $927.78 for the Ecuadorian bee keeping projects.

One of our members Amanda Lucille Nelson-Duac from Grandbury, Texas is currently serving in the North Ukraine and requested the funding for the Ukrainian project above.  You can follow the implementation of our project at her service blog (suddenlybeautiful.wordpress.com) and at her photo blog (maybesproutwings.tumblr.com).

I would like to announce the publication of "Bulgaria: Discover the Real Bulgaria," which I coauthored with a fellow RPCV.  (I began writing the travel guide when I lived in Dallas, but, because of a career-related move, I finished writing it in Northern California.)

Published by Other Places Publishing, a start-up publisher focused on travel guides written by RPCVs, the travel guide is available through Amazon, Amazon UK, and Barnes & Noble.

If someone you know is planning a European vacation, then the travel guide would make a great gift.  Bulgaria is a relatively easy side trip from popular destinations such as Greece and Turkey.

Hi NTPCV group:

I would like to announce that I have started a book exchange in Tonantzintla, Mexico as my Peace Corps secondary project. Tonantzintla is a tiny town in central Mexico, a little south of Puebla.  These people are hungry for something to read but very poor.  They are also very interested in learning English better than what they are taught in school.  We accept English fiction, English non-fiction, Spanish fiction and Spanish non-fiction.  The exchange just got started so we are in dire need of books.

If any of you wish to contribute and ship books down here, please write me back and I will give you the address.

Thanks for supporting your current PC volunteers!

Regards,

Jan Foster
