Dear NTPCA ,

We are seeking your participation in the collection of RPCV testimonies on the importance of taking action on climate change.

Our goal is to collect at least 350 testimonies in advance of the October 24th International Day of Climate Action!

This action won’t take long, and will allow us to add the collective voice of the Peace Corps community to events and activities on October 24th and beyond!

Please follow this link for more information about how to help us out with this project.  And, please pass this information along to other interested RPCVs (or PCVs) you know.

Thank you so much!

Hearts and Hammers is taking place this Saturday, September 19, and we still need at least 10 more volunteers to help! It's only one day, but you'll still make a huge impact in Bertha's life and for her community. We'll train you on the job, so if you can spare a couple of hours this Saturday morning (starting at 7:30), please join the fun at 3223 Sunnyvale St in South Dallas. Friends and family are welcome to join - so come out, meet some new friends and have a good time helping our community.

If you can come, please call team captain Kyle Gifford at (573) 864-4706 or send him an email at kgifford@... (or use the prior EVITE).

Please bring ladders/step ladders, caulk guns, paint brushes and putty knives if you have them, as well as water and sunscreen.

Also, if anyone has a hammerdrill, we need one! Let me know if we can borrow it, even if you can't make it on Saturday.".

Thanks so much - let me know if you need anything else.

Kyle

PS   Unlike recent years, we will not be joined by a crew of high school kids from Jesuit High School to help us; we are on our own.  The good news is that the house will not require much scrapping.

Remember that Hearts and Hammers program was created by a couple RPCVs from Dallas.

This seems to be a likely opportunity for anyone wanting to break into international development overseas work.  MSI is a great group to work for – one of my favorite clients.  Working for them would definitely open other doors.  Just wanted to send it out there in case anyone is interested.

Lorel

Dear Colleagues,

MSI began an exciting project this week.  USAID is dramatically enlarging their presence in Afghanistan, and has asked MSI to help by hiring 90 FSLs (Foreign Service Limited) by early November.

The positions cover a wide variety of general and technical skill sets, including General Development Officers, Contracts Officers and specialists in Agriculture, Engineering, Communications, Health, Education and Economic Growth.  These new employees will directly support USAID’s mission to promote the rapid transition of Afghanistan to a more stable and productive state, and to promote democracy, rule of law, and sustainable economic and social development that is responsive to the Afghan citizens’ needs.

All postings will have a 1 year contract (renewable for up to 5 years), and a competitive benefits package including post differential and danger pay.

Since you have already registered with MSI’s database, you do not need to complete a new application to express interest in these new openings.  Simply login using this e-mail address and your password, confirm that your profile and CV are up to date, and click “Add to my jobs.”  We are already reviewing applications and will reach out to finalists shortly.

For more information on the project and to express interest in the openings, please click the link below:

Please also feel free to send this to colleagues who may be interested.  This is an exciting time to be a part of USAID, and an exciting time to work in Afghanistan. We’re looking forward to working closely with USAID on this effort, and glad to have this opportunity to send so many of you to the field!

Best wishes,

Hello, RPCV's!

This is Bonnie with a friendly message:) The Episcopal School of Dallas is
looking for Returned Peace Corps Volunteers that would be willing to speak to
the students about Peace Corps and the countries they visited. You may have
seen the information in the last newsletter. I visited the school last week and
gave a ten minute talk during chapel, once for the middle school students, then
again for the high school students. I always love talking about my time in
Armenia, and it was fun sharing that, plus I met some great staff members and
students. If you are looking for a way to pursue the third goal of Peace Corps,
give the school director Mr. Campbell a call or send him an email. He'll be
happy to set something up!

Have a great week and hope to see everyone at the International Dinner on the
17th!

All

This letter comes via Abilene RPCV Ryan Riley, a Benin RPCV.  Please respond with generosity to honor one of our own.

Dear Fellow RPCVs,

Our names are Megan Grann, Jordan Steiner and Carly Loehrke. We served as TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) volunteers in Benin, 2007-2009. In March 2009, Kate Puzey, a fellow TEFL volunteer, was tragically murdered in her village of service. Kate was an exemplary volunteer, a true beacon of positivity and advocate for justice. Throughout her service, she was actively involved in projects that benefited youth and women, in particular young girls. In Kate’s honor, we have started the Kate Puzey Girls’ Camp Commemorative Fund.

Kate was involved in the organization and implementation of several girls’ camps during her time in Benin. Girls’ camps are a popular way for volunteers in Benin, in conjunction with host country nationals, to promote the empowerment of Beninese girls. Sessions often include encouraging girls in school, health, women and children’s rights, HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention, and other issues specific to Beninese life and society. These camps give girls an opportunity to share, learn and play in a safe environment.

Our fund works in cooperation with SIN-DO, a Beninese NGO dedicated to promoting and protecting women and girls, to financially support girls’ camps with grants of up to approximately $200. Last year, 179 girls participated in four camps across the country. Our hope is that with this fund, more girls each year will have the opportunity to attend a camp.

As RPCVs, you know the challenges of empowering youth, young girls in particular. But you also know the rewards - seeing previously shy girls blossom into leaders. Your contribution to the Kate Puzey Girls’ Camp Commemorative Fund will help a new generation of Volunteers and young women to reap those rewards while honoring Kate and her dedication to service and to a brighter future.

Contributions can be made online through the Benin Country Fund. The process to donate follows:

1.   Go to www.peacecorps.gov

2.   Click on “Donations”

3.   Click on “View all Country Funds”

4.   Click on “Benin Country Fund”

5.   Click on “Donate”

6.   Please make your contribution. In the comments section it is IMPERATIVE to specify “Kate Puzey Girls’ Camp Commemorative Fund” in order for your donation to be routed to the appropriate account.

The donation process is anonymous. However, if you’d like, you can email us at katepuzeyfund@... after you’ve donated and we will send an annual report once the camps have finished.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask! Thank you very much for your support.

Sincerely,

Megan Grann (Dallas, TX and NYC areas)

Jordan Steiner (San Francisco, CA and NYC areas)

Carly Loehrke (Chicago, IL area)

Something to consider...I was helping sort canned goods at the food bank on Monday, and 50% of the cans were corn or green beans.  They really seem to need protein items like peanut butter, tuna, canned meat, etc.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
Bonnie

Besides the Scottish Rite Tree trimming party next Tuesday and the annual Christmas party on December 12, we also have a Happy Hour at 6:30 PM on 12/17/09 at Ozona's on Greenville Ave, Dallas.

However, we are needing suggestions for a bar-restaurant in the Grand Prairie-Arlington area on January 28.  If you have a suggestion, please email it to Ed Hromatka at hromatka@... .

Good morning all!

Al Hindall would love to come to our party Sat but is still not driving at night.  Could anyone get him and take him home?  He's in north Oak Cliff.

Help out a old friend-let me know.

Thanks.

Gary

Hi, NT Peace Corps Return Volunteers!

I have been nominated to go to sub-Saharan Africa in July. I have been watching
your calendar and unable to attend any events so far due to scheduling
conflicts, but hopefully I will be able to meet some of you next year. I am a
mid-career volunteer and am particularly interested in meeting other mid-career
volunteers or people who have recently returned from Africa.

Happy Holidays!

Amy
