Those of us who attended the Annual General Meeting in January 2012 heard
from PCVs of Ghana One, the first group of Peace Corps Volunteers to go to
Ghana in 1961. As part of their training, a psychologist, Brewster Smith,
was assigned to determine their readiness for service and follow their
experiences. Dr. Smith became a great personal friend to many of those
early volunteers.

Dr. Smith eventually became a distinguished Professor of Psychology at UC
Santa Cruz. He passed away August 4, 2012 at the age of 93.

A complete obituary can be found at the following site.

Hello Fellow RPCVs

Over the last few years I usually send one message nearly every year and it is the announcement of Rotary District 5150's (San Francisco, Marin, and San Mateo Counties) Group Study Exchange (GSE).  The format of this program will likely be changing in upcoming years but for now it is as it has been.  The GSE trip will be to Finland from March 18 to April 15, 2013.  Notice the application date is very soon!

The flyer attached and the message below explains the program somewhat.

I am only signed up for the San Francisco, North Bay, and NorCAL PCA Yahoo groups so Jayma can you forward to your East Bay group and if the other area group board representatives thing it would be of interest forward it as well.  Keep in mind, although you may not qualify for this particular district's GSE program, you are very likely qualified for a different district's GSE program and from what I understand all districts around here have GSE programs.

If you have questions about this program or Rotary, do not hesitate to contact me.  I became a Rotarian at the Rotary Club of Fisherman's Wharf immediately after my GSE trip to the Philippines in 2000.  Since then there have been a handful of RPCVs who have gone on GSE trips.  I have yet to meet someone that did not think the GSE trip was amazing.

Team Members can not be directly related to a Rotarian and Team Leaders must be a Rotarian in District 5150.

Please see the attached

As usual, Bob Koehler, in his column below, perceives and tells the truth that lies (Or is it “lays”? I can’t really ever remember how it goes. Actually, though, “lies” works for its ironic double entendre.) behind  our so-called “news” media, our foreign policy, and especially our culture, which, for all their positive values and strengths, nevertheless so persistently, like those three monkeys, covers its eyes, ears, and mouth; closes its heart and mind; and opens its wallet to the mongers of hate and fear.

For release 9/20/12

THE INNOCENCE OF U.S. FOREIGN POLICY

The Saturday headline in the Wall Street Journal was: “Anti-U.S. Mobs on Rampage.”

The next day, a NATO  airstrike killed eight women collecting firewood in the mountains of eastern Afghanistan, an event that garnered virtually zero mainstream U.S. headlines.

Somewhere in the gap between these two phenomena — the overheated news about our violent, irrational enemies in the Middle East and the silence surrounding our war and occupation of the region — lies American politics, values, the presidential race, the national identity. Beyond that gap lies the truth about who we are, and only when we have access to it does the future turn into creative possibility and peace become possible.

The conventional wisdom we’re fed in the mainstream media takes into account only the fear — the hysteria — implicit in the Wall Street Journal headline. The story, by Jay Solomon and Carol E. Lee, goes on to tell us:

“The regional furor, coming just three days after an attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that killed the U.S. ambassador and three other workers, underscored Washington’s diminished ability to influence a region where a number of governments newly elected during the so-called Arab Spring have minimal control over their restive populations.

“In many cases,” the story continues, “the political leaders and security forces within these new governments have proved unwilling, or incapable, of challenging the protesters and radical Islamist groups that have gained greater license to take to the streets.”

In other words, the Middle East is archaic, volatile, “restive,” a region full of religious fanatics easily manipulated by cynical leaders. Almost anything — an idiotic 13-minute film clip on YouTube for “Innocence of Muslims,” for instance — can set off their murderous fury. The new governments that replaced the old autocracies can’t control such people. And now, tragically, several Americans are dead.

As the story progresses, the thesis slowly hardens into fact. Finally, ka-boom:

“Republican nominee Mitt Romney, for one, has seized on the unrest to charge that the White House didn’t understand the forces being unleashed by the rebellions that have gripped the region since last year, and should have been much more aggressive to try and fashion regimes that were secular and pro-West in their orientation.”

And that’s how it works. Suddenly the “might makes right” position, however puerile and irrational — that U.S. foreign policy is all about forcibly shaping the world around its  interests, that military intimidation only has consequences when it is not quickly and relentlessly employed — comes off as reasonable and logical. It may be debatable in a given circumstance, but it remains the option of choice in a dangerous world, where civilizations constantly clash, insurgents lurk and primitive, “tribal” fanatics hate us for our freedoms.

Thus Richard Cohen, writing in the Washington Post a few days ago, belittles the Obama administration for “leading from behind” because it was less aggressive last year than France in taking military action to remove Gaddafi from power in Libya. And now look where this naďve belief in diplomacy has gotten us:

“The notion that the United States can lead from behind,” Cohen writes, “is pitiful, the sorry concoction of an Obama administration that mistakes dulcet passivity for a foreign policy.”

Hoist the flag, praise the Lord, pass the ammo. This is American hysteria at its finest. Only unrelenting militarism can stop the rampaging mobs out there beyond our borders; dulcet passivity just won’t do it. And if you feel pushed and offended by this attitude, Barack Obama becomes the voice of reason in a troubled world, the good guy doing the best he can. Except . . . there’s that silence again.

As Peter Hart wrote recently in an article for FAIR: “Part of the corporate media’s job is to make sure real political grievances are mostly kept out of the discussion. It’s a lot easier to talk about angry mobs and their peculiar religion than it is to acknowledge that maybe some of the anger has little to do with religion at all.”

Whereas Arab violence generates adrenalin-pumping headlines and is mostly reported outside any serious context — e.g., the U.S. devastation of Iraq, Guantanamo, Abu Ghraib, the Koran burnings, the ongoing drone assassinations — the violence that emerges from U.S. policy is softened with so much context it’s often a struggle to figure out if anything happened at all.

For instance, the NATO airstrike last weekend that killed eight Afghan women and injured eight more, including young girls, was headlined thus in the New York Times: “Karzai Denounces Coalition Over Airstrikes.” The focus of the story, as Hart points out, is the tension the deaths caused “between Mr. Karzai and his American benefactors.” Meanwhile, “the killings of Afghan women are a secondary news event.”

The story of the deaths concludes: “Coalition forces were apparently unaware that village women sometimes go into the woods in the early hours of the morning to fetch wood for cooking fires they need to have going by breakfast time.”

This is the innocence of U.S. foreign policy. I feel far more horror — more fear about the future — in its pseudo-apology for the high-tech deaths of eight women than I do in the angry protests of aggrieved Arabs.

Hello, all.

Below is the beginning of and link to a NYT article about a new U.S. intelligence analysis of how rapidly and profoundly the world’s socio-politico-economic system is changing with a picture of what it could look like by 2030. It factors in the confluence of dynamic global shifts in demographics, economics, climate change, the rising power of people vis-ŕ-vis central governments, and more.

And they tout my old Peace Corps post of Nigeria as one of the up and coming world economic leaders!

Overall, they say it’s a balance of optimism and pessimism, but I see it as far more hopeful than scary.

Study Predicts Future for U.S. as No. 2 Economy, but Energy Independent

By THOM SHANKER
Published: December 10, 2012 111 Comments

WASHINGTON — A new intelligence assessment of global trends projects that China will outstrip the United States as the leading economic power before 2030, but that America will remain an indispensable world leader, bolstered in part by an era of energy independence.

Russia’s clout will wane, as will the economic strength of other countries reliant on oil for revenues, the assessment says.

“There will not be any hegemonic power,” the 166-page report says. “Power will shift to networks and coalitions in a multi-polar world.”

The product of four years of intelligence-gathering and analysis, the study, by the National Intelligence Council, presents grounds for optimism and pessimism in nearly equal measure. The council reports to the director of national intelligence and has responsibilities for long-term strategic analysis.

One remarkable development it anticipates is a spreading affluence that leads to a larger global middle class that is better educated and has wider access to health care and communications technologies like the Internet and smart phones. “The growth of the global middle class constitutes a tectonic shift,” the study says, adding that billions of people will gain new individual power as they climb out of poverty. “For the first time, a majority of the world’s population will not be impoverished, and the middle classes will be the most important social and economic sector in the vast majority of countries around the world.”

At the same time, it warns, half of the world’s population will probably be living in areas that suffer from severe shortages of fresh water, meaning that management of natural resources will be a crucial component of global national security efforts.

On Monday night, the Commonwealth Club presented "Ethical Destinations: Vote with your Wings".  Jeff Greenwald, Executive Director of Ethical Traveler, and Malia Everette, Founder of Atruvistas and Director of Global Exchange Reality Tours, named the 2013 winners of the World's 10 Best Ethical Destinations that they hope people will visit and support these economies.  The categories for which the countries are evaluated are:  Environmental Protection, Social Welfare, and Human Rights.

It was interesting to note that ALL OF THEM are Peace Corps countries, so I was not surprised to see a number of RPCVs in the audience.  The countries are in alphabetical order:
  1. Barbados
  2. Cape Verde
  3. Costa Rica
  4. Ghana
  5. Latvia
  6. Lithuania
  7. Mauritius
  8. Palau
  9. Samoa
  10. Uruguay

The next Commonwealth Club program that should be of interest to many is:  Adventures in Cross-Cultural Etiquette: How to Avoid Faux Pas in Social and Business Situations.  It is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 31st.  For more information or to register, go to:  http://www.commonwealthclub.org/events/filter/all/20130131

And be sure to watch John Hunter's TED talk, which is on the web site and also available at the TED web site:

Subtitles are there in 34 languages.

Yes, the game is both live and interactive, but what is more amazing is what those 4th graders accomplish. They could teach us all a great deal.

Thanks, Mike, for publicizing it.

Dean

My sister-in-law asked me to publicize this agriculture/ food justice fellowship
opportunity in San Diego. Please send it along to anyone who you think might be
interested. Thanks.

The Jewish Food Justice Fellowship (JFJF) is a pilot professional development
oriented program designed and implemented by the Leichtag Foundation in San
Diego's North County coastal region to support vibrant Jewish life in North
County and to combat poverty and increase food access and self-sufficiency. The
program will focus on food justice, agricultural sustainability and Jewish
community engagement. Eight to twelve Fellows from throughout North America and
Israel will be selected in the pilot cohort.

Attached is a letter with information regarding the event that you can share with your friends and colleagues. Please let me know if you need any more information or questions.

Thank you for your support!

Best,
