I am looking for information regarding my great-great grandparents,
Hans Ferdinand (b. 21 Aug 1866 d. 22 Feb 1934) and Alvina Laura? KASCH
(b. Sep 1874 d. 2 Jan 1909) STEFFEN. I believe they both died in
Nobles county.

After my great-great grandmother died, Hans Ferdinand remarried to
Elizabeth "Betty" HOLECK (b. 4 Nov 1883/1884 d. 6 Feb 1956).

Hans and Alvina had at least six children - Henry (1906) and Ernest
(1908) were both born in Nobles county.

Betty had a daughter, Frieda (1908), before she married Hans.

Any information that can be found would be appreciated - obituaries,
burial records, marriage record, etc.

It seems you have found quite a bit of family information. I would be
interested in all of the STEFFEN data (no STEFFAN or STEFFENS). I believe
all but perhaps a few are relatives.

Especially helpful would be obituary-type information for Ferdinand and
Alvina, as well as Christian and Elizabeth. I think Christian was
Ferdinand's brother. But I would appreciate the rest it, too.

I have been going thru my old letters on the computer & wanted to write to
you before, Don't think I did though.
Any way, when I was just out of high school ,I worked at the local Campbell
soup company and I worked with Hannah Paden from Fulda MN. She had 1 son & I
can't recall his name but I believe her husband was Jessie & he had died. I
worked there from 1958 to 1964. I can look up at the courthouse and see if I
can find anything. I don't know if Fulda is in our county or the next. Just
close on the border line. Let me know if I can be of help.  Sorry I am so
slow. I can look up the other names too & see if anything is up there.

The Library is open 8 to 5 Tue, Wed, Fri. and 8 to 8 on Mon and Thurs. The
library has all the microfilm newspapers. The historical society, located in
the lower level of the library, I believe is open 1 to 4 Mon to Fri. They
have clipping files of obituaries indexed by surname.

Go to the library - ask the reference librarian to help you with the
microfilm reader. If you have death dates, you can find obituaries from
any Nobles County newspaper. When you find the obituary, you can make a
print of it. The librarian will show you how. Prints are twenty-five
cents each. You must have the dates, of course. If you do not have the
dates you may be able to find those at a cemetery.

Hi Dana,

I would recommend you contact the libraries where your  relatives lived. My
Roll relatives lived in Adrian and Ellsworth in Nobles  County. Adrian did an
illustrated centennial book containing pictures and  descriptions of early
pioneer families a few years ago. It has also updated the  book periodically.
The
towns where your relatives lived may have done the  same.

Dear Dana,
There is a wonderful new website - www.newspaperarchive.com - they
offer a free 7-day trial period.  I found it so useful that I took a
subscription for a year.  It is much quicker in responding than
Ancestry (which I use daily) - makes for easier for downloading.
I found many more entries for my relatives at this site than at
Ancestry.com!! Some of the papers (all .pdf for Adobe Reader) are
all the way back to the early 1800's and to the present day. You can
search by relatives name, or by city or county or state - by topic -
whatever you want. New papers are added daily from USA to
International. Here's what they claim: 1 Page Added Every Second,
That's Over 80,000 Pages Per Day! The clicker just said: Currently
Uploading Newspaper Page: 51,905,107 and it continues clicking!!

Henry & Sara (Smith) Olson. He was born in Jackson Co. MN & lived most
of his life in Brewster, MN. He is buried in Hersey Cemetery in
Brewster. He was married to Dorothy Mae Smith, daughter of Frank &
Anna (Holm) Smith. Casket bearers were Gary Ahrens, Gary Olson, Rodney

suggestions on the types of resources I can check for my family tree
research. I live in Massachusetts. My gggrandfather James Conlon was
from County Meath, Ireland.  He ended up in Boston MA in the early
1870s and married there.  In 1879 he moved his family to MN.  I'm
assuming it must have been part of the Irish colonization in Nobles
County.  The 1880 census lists him as a farmer living in Little Rock
Township in Nobles.  My great grandfather, also James, was born in
Little Rock on October 14, 1880.  They moved back to Boston around
1883.  I'm just starting my search for records pertaining to when they
lived in MN.  Would there be land records if he bought the property he
lived on in Little Rock Township?  Would there be city directories for
such a small area so I can see if they lived there the whole time?  Is
the agricultural cesus for 1880 another good source?  Any tips would be
greatly appreciated.  I'm really excited to learn more about their time
in MN.

I just did a quick search of the Gen. Soc. master database, it is an index
for a large number of resources in Nobles County. I only found one hit for
your family and you already have that information. The birth index has James
Conlon's birth listed.

Minnesota also has a state census they did on the off five years, 1875, 1885
maybe 1895. These are not indexed so you will have to search Little Rock
Twp. for them. You maybe able to get the film on interlibrary loan in at
your area library, worth a try.

We are developing a list of structures in Worthington that could be
designated "Heritage Preservation Sites" kind of like the National
Register of Historic Places only local instead of national.

The following is the criteria:

   1. Exemplify or reflect the broad cultural, political, economic or
    social history of the City of Worthington.

  2. Be identified as a site of a significant historic event.

   3. Be identified with a person or persons who significantly
contributed to the culture and development of the City of Worthington.

   4. Embodies the distinguishing characteristics of a architectural
   style, period, form or treatment.

   5. Identifies work of an architectural or master builder whose
individual work has influenced the development of the City of Worthington.

   6. Represents the notable work of a master builder, designer,
landscape architect, engineer or architect.

One site that you mentioned in the past was the band shell and well as
Chautauqua Park as a whole. I would think the band shell with it's NYA
link would fall under the #1 and the park wold be #2 as well as #1.

Of course the places on the National Register: (Kilbride Clinic,
Dayton House, Citizens' National Bank, and the Hotel Thompson) would
be listed. I would think the Rail Road Depot and some of the churches
would play into the social history of the city. Anything you can add
to the list?

Just off hand, Pat - I think you might weigh Memorial Auditorium -

         The auditorium was built in 1931 as part of the contract which
also resulted in Central Elementary. The auditorium has the same art
deco motif as the school - the acoustics in the Auditorium are
exceptional.

         The auditorium has been Worthington's music hall, concert
hall, lecture hall through passing decades. Hal Holbrook did his
evening with Mark Twain performance there before he went to Broadway
with it. Tennessee Sen. Estes Kefauver held a rally there in his 1956
bid for the Democratic presidential nomination. Jessica Dragonette, a
nationally-known singer and network radio performer, did a concert at
the auditorium on the night of Pearl Harbor. The Corn on the Cob shows
lately are a unique Worthington feature. The high school held pep
rallies there through years; WHS basketball games were played there,
along with many tournament games. It has been the site of the concert
series through half-a-century - the only concert series Worthington
has had. It was the setting for a host of high school and city band
concerts, choir concerts, Christmas concerts.

         The auditorium was scheduled for razing when the old high
school went down. Worthington protested and the City Council was moved
to take over the building from the school board - one instance when
historic preservation succeeded.

         Oh - "Memorial" - it was built as a war memorial, a memorial
to Worthington servicemen in World War I.

If it's all right I will send you some thoughts on local buildings of
historic interest as they come to me - you can decide whether they
meet the criteria you set out. Maybe they are something you want to
consider, maybe not.

         • The old post office building at the corner of Third Avenue
and 11th Street. That dates to (about) 1934. It is in the federal or
federalist style of architecture which was popular with U.S.
government planners of that time. One interesting thing about it: it
was a part of the New Deal effort to create jobs and to stimulate
local economies. There were the public works agencies - PWA, WPA,
etc., - but the Post Office Department (there was a Post Office
Department then) the PO Dept. also was being liberal in authorizing
new buildings. Franklin D. Roosevelt's name is carved into the
cornerstone. (I haven't looked for a while; I think Henry Morgenthau,
Secretary of the Treasury, and James A. Farley, Postmaster General,
also have their names there.) Loretta Harper, who was Worthington's
only woman postmaster, served her term there. Ray Schisler, who also
was Worthington's mayor, was postmaster there. Mail arrived on trains
and there was a truck to deliver mail to and from the depot and post
office, making regular runs along 11th Street.

         • Immediately before that time, Worthington's post office was
located in the brick building which faces on Fourth Avenue and which
is behind the Cow's Outside. The post office leased that space; the
government did not own it. I understand Phil Willardson just bought
that building. The building is a good one and it has a root which is
very close to 100 years old, give or take.

         • Across the street, in the building at the corner of 4th and
10th where the used book store is now - the exterior mucked up with
plastic siding - I believe that building is 80 years old this year.
That was built by Elmer Ahlf and it was Ahlf's Drugstore  from 1927
until Ahlf's moved to Northland Mall in 1976/1977. The thing
interesting about it which can't be shown any longer is that it was a
corner drugstore. Corner drugstores were an American icon through the
first half of the 20th Century. There was a lunch counter/soda
fountain where downtown people went for sandwiches/coffee. But
(especially) that was where the high school kids went for Cokes and
malted milks. After school every day and through the early evening it
was full of kids, as were the sidewalks out the front door.

Your input so far was just what I had in mind when I asked you about
any buildings. This will be a great help. What do you know about the
houses on 8th Street by the antique shop including the antique shop.
Did any of them have a local historical figures associated with them?

I was also thinking about Rezeau Plotts's house on Okabena Street, I would think
this would fit.
