Strong in the World Respected At Home....does it sound familiar,
sort of? It should, it is the exact opposite of the Strong At Home
Respected in the World mantra being sung by Senator John Forbes-Kohn-
Kerry and his running mate Senator Edwards and the Democratic Party
these days. We think that Senator John Forbes-Kohn-Kerry and company
have got it backwards. In June of 1940 Hitler had conquered France
and would not attack Russia, with whom he had a non-agression pact,
the infamous Hitler-Stalin Pact, for another year. The so-called
international community that did not support the liberation of Iraq
in 2003, made up principally of France, Germany and Russia is not
all that different from the France, Germany and Russia of June 1940.

No candidate who is perceived
by the electorate as soft on terrorism in general or, more
specifically, soft on Saddam Hussein the terror gang boss who sent
bin Laden to attack America on the 11th anniversary to the day of
Bush I's speech to Congress on Iraq of September 11th,1990, and who
threatened the US with chemical, biological and nuclear
weapons, can be elected to the White House. Nor can Democrats who are
tarred with the same brush as those Democrats who voted to appease
Saddam Hussein. I am reminded of the Science
Fiction classic: "The Coming of the Quantum Cats" by Frederik Pohl

Germany possesses an indigenously developed aerodynamic missile, the
AS 34 Kormoran 1 & 2, which could pose a threat to the United States
if launch from air-borne or sea-borne platforms. In addition, the
unclassified literature suggests that
Daimler-Benz aerospace, the nation's largest aerospace firm, is
developing
the ASS 500, a missile that can carry a 500 kg payload to a range of
500 km. Reports suggest that this missile will be fielded by 2015.
Like the AS 34 Kormoran, it will only present a threat to the United
States if launched from airborne or seaborne platform.
This does not suggest, however, that Germany's behavior has not
threatened U.S. national security interests. Germany's export
policies have been extremely problematic. German equipment,
technology and technical know-how were used in Iraq's nuclear,
chemical and biological weapons programs as
well as ballistic missile programs prior to the Gulf War.
Furthermore, German companies helped Libya construct several
chemical weapons facilities during the 1980's, illustrating the
willingness of German industry to assist foreign WMD programs during
the 1980's.... reports suggest that German companies continue to
supply material and technology to Syria, Iraq and Iran for use in
their ballistic missile programs. These nations continue to obtain
dual-use equipment from German companies, and frequently apply them
for military purposes. Nations like Iran have ... obtain equipment
for its ballistic missile programs...German equipment, technology
and know-how were used by Iraq to develop WMD and ballistic missile
delivery systems prior to the Gulf War....
The following sections outline Germany's past assistance to Iraqi WMD
programs, examines Germany's current export control system, and
reports how Germany may continue to assist ballistic missile
programs in Syria, Iraq and Iran.

Germany and Iraq: Prior to the Gulf War
Following the Gulf War it was revealed
that Germany had offered extensive assistance to Iraq's WMD and
ballistic missile programs. Some scholars, like Michael Ledeen, have
asserted that hundreds, and perhaps thousands, of German scientists,
businessmen and middlemen played an integral role in Iraq's $50
billion effort to develop nuclear, chemical and biological weapons,
as well as ballistic missile
delivery systems. 4 As many as 80 German companies, including
companies
like MBB and Karl Zeiss were implicated as suppliers for Iraq's WMD
programs after the Gulf War.

Ballistic Missile Program

Beginning in the early 1980's, Germany provided fundamental
assistance to
Iraq's ballistic missile programs. In 1984, Iraq's Saad General
Establishment signed a contract with Gildemeister Projecta of
Bielefld,
West Germany, a wholly owned subsidiary of the German machine tool
manufacturer Gildemeister AG or GIPRO. Under the terms of the
contract,
Germany agreed to design, construct and fit a complete missile
research,
development and test center near the Iraqi city of Mosul that
included,
advanced wind tunnels, electronics workshops, manufacturing
facilities for
missile parts, and missile assembly plants. German companies such as
MBB,
BP, Carl Zeiss, Degussa, Rhinemetall and Tesa also won contracts to
supply
the Iraqi facility which later became known as Saad 16.

In order to hide the true nature of the facility from the
international
community, GIPRO disguised the complex as a university research
facility,
insisting in German export licensing documents that the facility
would
comprise laboratories and workshops similar to those German
universities.
In all, more than 38 West German companies supplied equipment to this
facility, including, MBB, Siemens, and Thyssen. In his book, The
Death
Lobby: How the West Armed Iraq, Kenneth Timmerman asserts that the
German
government asked no questions about the proposed contract. It was
worth far
too much money for German industry. 5 In fact, Gildemeister applied
for and
received a blanket permit to export whatever it desired to Saad 16,
and did
not require any further licensing requirements. According to
Germany's
Federal Economic Agency which supplied the permit to Gildemeister,
constructing a ballistic missile design and testing center was
considered
legitimate business for German companies.

After Saad 16 had become operational, German scientists, technicians
and
researchers continued work conducted in Argentina and Egypt on the
Condor I
and II projects. 6 Some assessments of Germany's involvement in Saad
16
assert that German technical assistance was integral in enabling
Iraq to
increase the range of the Tamuz-1, an Iraqi missile that resembles
the
Condor-2, to 1000 km. 7 Others suggest that without German
assistance,
Iraq's Al-Huseyn missiles would never have been able to reach Israel
during
the Gulf War. German laxity in enforcing its export controls allowed
German
industry to transfer compressors to Iraq that were used to improve
the
range of Scud missiles. 8

Chemical Weapons Program

German involvement in Iraq's chemical weapons program began in 1977.
In
1980, Germany began construction on what the Iraqis labeled
a "pesticide
plant" at Samarra, despite its extreme security measures, barbed wire
fences and armed guards. Four years later, the facility became
operational.
The key technologies for Samarra came from four German companies for
a
number of years: Kolb and its subsidiary, Pilot Plant; Walter
Engineering
Trading (WET); and Preussag AG.

In the early 1990's, a Swiss Chemical Weapons expert, Werner
Richarz, was
hired by the German government to determine whether Samarra had been
built
to construct chemical weapons. Richarz bluntly concluded that German
technology and assistance greatly enhanced Iraq's ability to
manufacture
poison gas and prussic acid. 9 He also noted that Samarra was
probably one
of the largest chemical weapons facilities in the world.

In addition to aiding the development of Iraq's Samarra chemical
weapons
facility, German assistance was integral to the creation of Iraq's
other
main chemical weapons facility at Salman Pak. The German firm Thyssen
Rheinstahl Technology (TRT) headed the development of this facility.
In
addition to supplying technologies for the development of chemical
weapons,
Thyssen helped Iraq construct an array of biological weapons such as
anthrax, cholera, and typhoid agents in large quantities in TRT built
laboratories. 10

Although not related directly to the Samarra or Salman Pak
facilities,
German companies also helped Libya construct chemical weapons
facilities at
Rabta and the Sabba military base, further illustrating the
willingness of
German companies to assist foreign WMD programs during the 1980's. 11

Nuclear Weapons Program

On January 13, 1992, experts from the Iraqi centrifuge program at the
Tuwaitha Nuclear Research Center gave IAEA inspectors their most
comprehensive description of Iraq's centrifuge program to date. The
Iraqis
announced that they had imported German technology and material
needed to
manufacture centrifuge components....Iraq used an intricate web of
middlemen to obtain German equipment for its
gas centrifuge program. These individuals disguised the destination
of
dual-use imports to assure German suppliers that the equipment would
be
used for peaceful purposes. Scholars have concluded that German
companies
such as Interatom (a subsidiary of Siemens AG) and H&H Metalform were
therefore unaware that their exports were being used in Iraq's gas
centrifuge enrichment program. 12

According to Michael Ledeen's article "Iraq's German connection,"
some
German firms continued to supply materials for Iraq's nuclear
program even
after Iraq's annexation of Kuwait in August 1990. He also concludes
that
German companies may have continued to ship nuclear technology to
Iraqi
contacts in Pakistan three weeks into the Gulf War. 13...reports have
surfaced that German companies have continued to supply dual-use
goods and
technologies to WMD and ballistic missile programs in Syria, Iraq
and Iran,...
The Diversion of German Dual-Use Material and Technology: Syrian,
Iraqi and
Iranian "Spin-On" Efforts

A report released by the Central Intelligence Agency in September
1997
entitled "The Acquisition of Technology Relating to Weapons of Mass
Destruction and Advanced Conventional Munitions" stated that Germany
was
the principal target of nations who want to advance their WMD
capabilities.
The CIA concluded that German companies have maintained close
commercial
ties with Syria, Iraq and Iran, despite the vocal disapproval of the
German
Government. The following sections outlines specific examples of
Syrian,
Iraqi, and Iranian cooperation with German firms, and assesses their
importance for the Rumsfeld Commission. 14

Syrian-German Cooperation

German firms must receive permission to export dual-use goods to
Syria.
Germany's export control watch lists include Syria's Centre d'Etudes
de
Recherches Scientifiques (CERS), and its Higher Institute of Applied
Science and Technology (HIAST). CERS is classified as a government
agency,
but has since become the center of Syria's state R&D network. CERS is
identified as an organization of concern in Germany's national trade
law.
All German products exported to the Center Require a license.

In recent years, it appears that CERS has purchased dual-use
technology
from Germany. In November 1992, CERS sent a delegation to Germany to
purchase electronics goods and "connectors" that can be used in
ballistic
missile separation. 15 Six months earlier, CERS representatives
signed
contracts with German companies to obtained advanced technology
equipment.

In the early 1990's, it was reported that CERS attempted to establish
ballistic missile manufacturing facilities by soliciting German
companies.
In August 1992, Mednews reported that fifteen German companies had
supplied
CERS with dual-use materials to produce solid rocket fuel,
including, hot
isostatic presses and high temperature ovens. 17

Several months later in January 1993, Italian authorities stopped a
German
ship en route to Syria that was loaded with dual-use equipment that
could
be used to extent the range of Syrian Scud's from 300 to 700 km. 18
Furthermore, in August 1993, the Simon Wiesenthal Center issued a
study
revealing that as many as 100 German companies were both
intentionally and
unintentionally aiding Syria construct two underground ballistic
missile
factories. The report also revealed that German rocket engineers were
helping Libya develop its ballistic missile program. 19

In addition, there is considerable speculation that German firms have
helped Syria develop cruise missiles since the Gulf War. Jane's
Defence
Weekly reported in December 1993 that Syria and Iran were using
German
dual-use technology to jointly develop a new cruise missile. 20

Iraqi-German Cooperation

In an October 11,1995 report to the U.N. Security Council, UNSCOM
chief
Rolf Ekeus noted that, "new revelations (about Iraq's secret
procurement
network) cast into doubt the veracity of Iraq's previous declaration
in the
missile area, including the material balance for proscribed weapons
and
items." In the fall of 1995, United Nations and U.S. officials
accused Iraq
of covertly purchasing missile components from Russian and German
firms.
Ekeus accused Iraq of obtaining accelerometers and gyroscopes,
special
metals and machine tools in order to manufacture missile engine
parts and
guidance equipment. Ekeus also claimed that Iraq had placed orders
for
other related missile technology and material with German and Russian
industrial firms. While Ekeus and other U.N. officials conceded that
Iraq
has probably not assembled any new ballistic missiles since the Gulf
War,
they asserted that Iraq has stockpiled and concealed German
materials and
technologies in order to resume the manufacture of ballistic missiles
sometime in the future. These officials asserted that Iraq could
ultimately
increase the range of its Scud missile in the future with these
components
through reverse engineering 21

Nearly a year after the UN's report, in September 1996, the
International
Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confiscated an Iraqi carbon-fiber-
filament
winding machine in Jordan. This machine can be used in production of
both
rocket motor cases and high speed gas centrifuges for uranium
enrichment.
This machine was allegedly built for Iraq by Karl-Heinz Schaab, a
former
employee of Germany's MAN Technology AG. Schaab planned to send the
equipment to Iraq through a Swiss company and a middleman in
Singapore.
Schaab allegedly built another filament winding machine at his German
company, Rosch GmbH, that was designed to wind about 50 carbon-fiber
rotor
tubes. The tubes were sold to Iraq around 1989. 22

These reports suggest that Iraq has continued to attempt to obtain
German
dual-use equipment and technology, as well as technical know-how,
for its
ballistic missile programs from German companies behind the back of
UNSCOM
inspection efforts. Whether intentionally or indirectly, German
companies
have continued to supply Iraq with dual-use materials that can be
used in
its ballistic missile programs despite a revamped domestic export
control
system. So long as German companies continue to do business with
Iraqi
entities, the possibility exists that dual-use equipment may be
diverted to
Iraq's ballistic missile program. In addition, the unclassified
literature
suggests that Iraq has attempted to set up a supplier network
through other
nations like Jordan. It appears that Iraq has placed fronts in other
nations between Germany and Iraq so that German companies do not
know that
they are actually delivering material and technology to Iraq.

Iranian-German Cooperation

In June 1995, German Chancellor Helmut Kohl said in Jerusalem that
Germany
could not break its commercial ties with Iran in order to ensure debt
repayment. Since this announcement, the United States has been
troubled by
Germany's insistence to maintain commercial ties with Iran....

They were meant to inspect weapons turned over by Saddam for

failed to adhere to the demand to turn those weapons over.

Imagine that you are trying to find the dope in your child's room.
Imagine that you have not been permitted to enter that room for four
years by that child, who has had those four years to hide the dope.

Good luck finding the dope.

Now imagine that your child's room is the size of Iraq and that
the dope is capable of being hidden in some not very large hidey
holes,
just like Saddam was.

Good luck finding the dope. In this case the dope is the weapons of
mass destruction.

Some of them were moved to Syria, assuming that Israeli Prime
Minister
Sharon was right, and perhaps to other countries as well,including
Jordan.
Some were no doubt destroyed by U.S. bombing over the years. Some,
we believe, are still hidden in Iraq. Some may have been found by
persons
unknown and moved to locations unknown. Whether those persons
include the
terrorists operating in Iraq is not clear but the recent Sarin
attack on
U.S. forces in Iraq MAY, and we repeat MAY, indicate that there may
be
more weapons of mass destruction IN THE HANDS OF ANTI-U.S. TERRORISTS
IN IRAQ, and that those weapons might be used elsewhere by those same
terrorists, perhaps even in the U.S.

"Syrians hiding Iraqi weapons for cash

Feb 06, 2003 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- Some U.S.
intelligence agencies believe that elements of Syria's ruling elite
have accepted millions of dollars in bribes in return for providing
a safe haven for some of Iraq's weapons of mass destruction,
according to former and serving U.S. officials.

Chemical and biological weapons were taken by truck to a Syrian
munitions compound near a military base near Khan Abu Shamet, about
50 miles northeast of Damascus, these officials told United Press
International.

The chief suspects in the operation are Bushra al Assad, the sister
of Syrian President Bashar al Assad, and her husband Gen. Assaf
Chawkat, the No. 2 in Syria's military intelligence organization,
the Mukhabarat.

U.S. officials -- most recently President George W. Bush -- have
charged that Iraq is moving around production and storage facilities
for chemical and biological weapons to hide them from U.N.
inspectors charged with disarming the regime.

The allegation that Iraqi strongman Saddam Hussein was trying to
hide suspected weapons of mass destruction in Syria was first made
on Dec. 23 by Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.

Sharon told Israeli television. "What we assume is that weapons that
he (Saddam) wanted to hide -- chemical weapons, biological weapons --
were indeed transferred to Syria."

The claim was repeated and firmed up by his foreign minister,
Binyamin Netanyahu, last month: "Those intelligence reports (about
the alleged transfer) are solid," he said on Jan. 19, according to
the Canadian Broadcasting Corp.

A former Israeli intelligence official said the unwillingness to
believe the Israeli reports was political at bottom: "The Bush
administration does not want to confront the Syrians, even though
they are bad news and working all along with Saddam," he said.
Israeli intelligence had given the White House reports about the
transfer, he said, but "the administration dismissed it."

"There is an institutional bias in Washington against taking on
Syria," the former Israeli operative said.

A former senior Pentagon official said "The CIA simply doesn't want
the story told."

Gal Luft, a former analyst for the pro-Israeli Washington Institute
for Near East Policy who has excellent Israeli and U.S. intelligence
sources, also said that materiel was being moved to Syria --
"certain individuals are taking money and hiding weapons"

Jordan is also engaged in similar activity in concealing small
amounts of Iraqi weapons, although former Israeli intelligence
sources lacked specific details."

France Betrayed U.S. to Saddam, Stifled Iraqis Opposing Saddam

LONDON – France gave Saddam Hussein's regime regular reports on its
dealings with American officials, and it colluded with the Iraqi
secret service to undermine a Paris conference, British newspapers
report.
Documents unearthed in the wreckage of the foreign ministry in
Baghdad are the first Iraqi files to emerge documenting French help
for the dictatorship, the Sunday Times reported. Paris shared with
Baghdad the contents of private trans-Atlantic meetings and
diplomatic traffic from Washington, the documents reveal.

The Times reported:


The information, said in the files to have come partly from "friends
of Iraq" at the French foreign ministry, kept Saddam abreast of
every development in American planning and may have helped him to
prepare for war. One report warned of an American "attempt to
involve Iraq with terrorism" as "cover for an attack on Iraq."
Another, dated September 25, 2001, from Naji Sabri, the Iraqi
foreign minister, to Saddam's palace, was based on a briefing from
the French ambassador in Baghdad and covered talks between
presidents Jacques Chirac and George W Bush.

Chirac was said to have been told that America was "100% certain
Usama bin Laden was behind the September 11 attacks and that the
answer of the United States would be decisive."

The report also gave a detailed account of American attitudes
towards Saddam amid anxiety in Iraq that the country might soon
become a target of American reprisals.

The newspaper found a document in folders marked France 2001 that
said, "Information available to the French embassy in Washington
suggests that there is no intention on the part of the Americans to
attack Iraq, but that matters might change quickly.

"According to French information, a discussion about Iraq is going
on in Washington between Colin Powell and [Paul] Wolfowitz [the
deputy defense secretary]. Powell was against a military attack on
Iraq whereas Wolfowitz was in favor of a strong military operation
against Iraq."

Also noted: an account of a meeting between Hubert Vedrine, former
Socialist foreign minister of France, and Powell after 9/11....

Bernard Jenkin, British shadow defense secretary, said the briefings
showed France's "duplicitousness."

Anti-Human-Rights France Fights Saddam's Foes

The Daily Telegraph today quoted a letter from the Iraqi secret
service dated March 28 saying that "one of our sources" had met the
deputy spokesman for the French foreign ministry "with whom he has
good relations."

The letter added that no French visas would be given to Iraqi
opposition leaders, who wanted to attend the meeting, which opened
in a Paris hotel on April 14, 2000, the Telegraph said.

The documents regarding the human rights group Indict show that pro-
Iraqi elements, "Iraq and Arab brothers," gained access to the
conference at the Hotel La Concorde Lafayette. Indict's attempt to
mount a protest outside the Iraqi ambassador's residence was foiled
by the authorities.

A month after the meeting, a letter headed "Role of Southern France"
from Saddam's office authorized the finance ministry to pay $383,439
to undisclosed beneficiaries.

British Labor Member of Parliament Ann Clwyd, who heads Indict, told
the newspaper that she would demand an apology from the French
government for its "atrocious" attitude.

The files were retrieved from the looted and burned foreign ministry
by the Telegraph last week.

They include a six-page letter dated February 1998 from Hussein to
Chirac, welcoming his support in the campaign against U.N. sanctions
and assuring him that Iraq did not have weapons of mass destruction.

The Exocet is a French-built anti-ship missile made in various
versions capable of being launched from surface ships and boats,
submarines, and airplanes. It has been extensively used in combat
from the 1980s onwards. The name comes from a French word for flying
fish.

Description
The Exocet missile is built by European company MBDA's division
Aérospatiale (who were also the French arm of the Anglo-French team
that built the Concorde.) It is one of the most successful Surface
to Surface / Air to Surface missiles currently in service.
Development began in 1967, as a ship launched missile named MM 38.
The air launched Exocet was developed in 1974 and entering service
with the French Navy in 1979.

The missile was designed to engage large warships. It is 4.7 m long,
has a wingspan of 1.1 m, weighs 670 kg and has a 165 kg warhead.
Guidance in the mid flight phase is inertial, followed by active
radar seeking to acquire its target. The solid propellant engine
gives the Exocet a maximum range of 65 km. The submarine-launched
version places the missile and a Narval booster motor within a
launch capsule.

The Exocet has been manufactured in a number of versions, including:

MM38 (surface-launched)
AM39 (air-launched)
SM39 (submarine-launched)
MM40 (surface-launched)
The chief competitor to the Exocet is the American AGM-84 Harpoon.

History
In 1982, during the Falklands war, air-launched Exocets were used
successfully by Argentinian forces against the British destroyer HMS
Sheffield (4th May) and support ship Atlantic Conveyor (25th May);
both sank. A surface-launched Exocet damaged HMS Glamorgan. The
Exocet that struck the Sheffield failed to explode but the impact of
a half-ton missile travelling at 700 mph and laden with unburnt
rocket fuel was enough to set the ship ablaze.

Although the loss of the Sheffield was a blow to British self-
esteem, the missile used earned itself a curious kind of respect,
and the word "an Exocet" passed into British colloquial use to
mean "a devastating attack". It is still occasionally heard, and
would be widely understood, today.

Iraq successfully used the air-launched version against Iranian
shipping during the Iran-Iraq War and later against the US Navy
Guided missile frigate USS Stark (FFG-31) (an Oliver Hazard Perry
class frigate). The Stark was heavily damaged but saved by the crew
and sent back for repairs.

Operators
The Exocet is currently in service with France, Germany, Pakistan,
Abu Dhabi, Argentina, Singapore, Brazil, Oman, Egypt, Iraq, Kuwait,
Libya, Qatar and Peru.

Marshal Philippe P‚tain's collaborationist Vichy government, in
alliance with the Nazis, deported between 61,000 and 80,0002 Jews to
the extermination camps. Estimates vary.
On December 23, 2001, Deputy Foreign Minister Rabbi Michael Melchior
expressed his concern over the increasing anti-Semitism in France
and in Belgium. He stated that in the past 15 months, there had been
almost 200 anti-Semitic incidents in France.3 (Melchior is a
recipient of the Nobel Institute's Prize for Tolerance and Bridge-
Building.4)
In 1967, General Charles de Gaulle undercut Israel in crisis and
cultivated Arab countries.6
At the end of May 1967, a week before the Six Day War broke out, De
Gaulle ordered all French military aid to Israel stopped.2 De Gaulle
denounced the Jews "as an elite people, sure of themselves and
domineering."5
He sought to boost trade ties with oil-rich Arab nations and extend
French influence against the "Anglo-Saxons."6
By 1970, France was one of Iraq's main trading partners.6 Diplomatic
and economic ties were given a crucial boost in 1974, when the then
French Prime Minister, and current President, Jacques Chirac, called
Saddam Hussein a personal friend.6
In December 1974, then Vice President Saddam Hussein invited then
French Prime Minister Jacques Chirac to Baghdad. Chirac accepted and
visited Iraq in 1975. Chirac is the only Western leader to have a
personal knowledge of the Iraqi president.7

Saddam Hussein approved a deal granting French oil companies a
number of privileges plus a 23 percent share of Iraqi oil.7
Chirac agreed to sell two reactors to Iraq. The Iraqis purchased a
70-megawatt reactor, along with six charges of 26 points of uranium
enriched to 93 percent -- in other words, enough weapons-grade
uranium to produce three to four nuclear devices. Iraq also
purchased a one-megawatt research reactor, and France agreed to
train 600 Iraqi nuclear technicians and scientists -- the core of
Iraq's nuclear capability today.9 One of the reactors, at Al-
Toweitheh, 40 km south of Baghdad, was named Al-Tammuz or Osirak
(some say this is a contraction of Osiris and Iraq) in reflection of
its French predecessor, (Tammuz and Osiris are the names in
Babylonian and Egyptian, respectively, for the same god in ancient
pantheons.) Al-Tammuz emerged as the core of Iraq's efforts to
develop nuclear weapons.7

Israel destroyed Al-Tammuz in an air raid. Ilan Ramon, the Israeli
astronaut who died in space shuttle Columbia on February 1, 2003,
was the youngest among the pilots who destroyed the Tammuz reactor
in Iraq in an air raid on June 7, 1981.

In 1976, Saddam Hussein made his first and only visit to a western
capital.7 At Orly Airport, Chirac called Hussein his "personal
friend." Hussein agreed to sell France huge quantities of oil.2

The dates of and sequence of transactions in these two reciprocal
visits are reported inconsistently. The years 1974, 1975, and 1976
are given, and sometimes the purchase of nuclear reactors is said to
have been made in the second visit (by Hussein to France) rather
than in the first visit (by Chirac to Iraq).
French arms sales and infrastructure projects in Iraq continued
apace through the remainder of the 1970s. By the late 1970s, France
was second only to the Soviet Union as a supplier of both civilian
and military equipment to Iraq.6
In the 1980s, the French socialist government continued the trend.6

France strongly backed Iraq in its war against Iran. Other Western
countries also did so. France and Russia provided the bulk of Iraq's
war support.6
France supplied Iraq with sophisticated weaponry, including Mirage
F1 fighter-bombers, Super Etendard aircraft equipped with Exocet
anti-ship missiles,6 and equipment to improve the accuracy and range
of Scud missiles.2 The sales are estimated at $20 billion.7
When Iraq had trouble paying, France rescheduled its debt.6
In a 1986 report about Chirac's attempt to return to the
premiership, the New York Times reported that the French
official "has said many times that he is a personal friend of Saddam
Hussein of Iraq."9
In 1987, the Manchester Guardian Weekly quoted Chirac as saying that
he was "truly fascinated by Saddam Hussein since 1974."9

Iranians referred to Chirac as "Shah-Iraq" and Israelis spoke of the
Osirak reactor as "O-Chirac."9

When Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990, France took a lukewarm approach to
the Kuwait's liberation.

President Francois Mitterand sent emissaries to 24 countries to
assure their governments French participation was purely defensive.2
Just a few days before Operation Desert Storm began in 1991, French
envoys in Baghdad tried to find a diplomatic solution.6
Only after the French Embassy in occupied Kuwait was raided and four
French citizens kidnapped did Mitterand take a firmer line against
Saddam Hussein.2
Economically, French ties with Iraq have been a costly disaster.6
After helping Saddam Hussein build airports, factories and weapons,
France is saddled with $4 billion in unpaid bills.6
France helped arm a power that it later had to fight.6
French diplomacy with Iraq has yielded scant results.6
In 1992, author-journalists Claude Angeli and Stéphanie Mesnier
interviewed Saddam Hussein. While speaking of his sense of betrayal
by France for its participation in the Persian Gulf War, Hussein
threatened to expose French politicians for their support of his
regime unless they continued to support him. Angeli and Mesnier
published the quotation in their book, Notre Allié Saddam (Our Ally
Saddam) (O. Orban 1992) ASIN: 2855656583, 274 pages, which is now
out of print. They reported Hussein as saying:8
As for financiers, industrialists and above all those responsible
for military industry, the question must be put to French
politicians: Who did not benefit from these business contracts and
relationships with Iraq? . . . With respect to the politicians, one
need only refer back to the declarations of all the political
parties of France, Right and Left. All were happy to brag about
their friendship with Iraq and to refer to common interests. From
Mr. Chirac [now the center-right president] to Mr. Chevenement [the
socialist former defense minister] . . . politicians and economic
leaders were in open competition to spend time with us and flatter
us. We have now grasped the reality of the situation [of France's
support for the 1991 Gulf War, a betrayal in Saddam's eyes]. If the
trickery continues, we will be forced to unmask them, all of them,
before the French public.

In 1994, when American troops were rushed to the region after Iraq
massed two divisions of Republican Guards near the Kuwaiti border,
French Defense Minister Francois Leotard came to Iraq's defense. He
said Iraq had not violated any U.N. resolutions, and he accused the
United States of playing election-year politics.10
When Chirac became president, he followed his avowed model, General
de Gaulle, to promote Gaullist power against U.S. power and support
for Arab nations against Israel.2

In 1996 Chirac delivered a speech at Cairo University where he
forwarded France as an alternative to the U.S. as Middle East peace
broker.
Chirac said Arabs would benefit from the change because the U.S. was
too pro-Israeli.
In 1995, France reopened its embassy in Baghdad at the charg‚
d'affaires level.10
In 1998, when the U.N. arms inspection effort in Iraq was
collapsing, the French and Russians worked to head off an American
attack. France denounced an American-British operation when it was
staged.10

France's best friends in the Middle East are Syria, Iraq and Iran.
These are three of seven nations the U.S. lists as state sponsors of
international terrorism.11

A 2002 French bestseller says the Pentagon was not hit by American
Airlines Flight 77 on September 11, 2001. It says the damage to the
Pentagon could not have been caused by a Boeing 757, but was in fact
the result of a carefully planned truck bombing or missile strike
which was then made to look like a plane crash. It says the United
States government staged the entire Pentagon crash in order to
create justification for an invasion of Afghanistan. Francouz

On April 12, 2002, the Simon Wiesenthal Center released its first
ever travel advisory. The advisory covered France and Belgium. Of
France the advisory said, "In the last 18 months there have been
over 400 hate crimes against Jewish targets in France including, in
recent days, arson attacks against synagogues, Jewish institutions,
beatings of Jewish school children and pedestrians and other acts of
threats and intimidation in Paris, Marseilles, Lyon and other
communities. As a result, the Simon Wiesenthal Center urges Jewish
travelers to France to exercise extreme caution while traveling to
that country."
While anti-war personalities claim the U.S. wants war for oil,
France may want no war for oil.

In December 1996, the Jerusalem Post quoted Iraq's Oil Minister Amir
Rasheed as saying: "'Friendly countries who have supported us, like
France and Russia, will certainly be given priority" when the
lucrative contracts for the reconstruction of Iraq are awarded after
the oil embargo is lifted.2
In December 1996, the London Mail reported that Western intelligence
services had learned French companies had signed multi-million
dollar contracts to help rearm Iraq, among other things, in exchange
for oil.2
At the 35th annual Baghdad international trade fair in November
2002, France was represented by 81 firms. Saddam Hussein gave the
French and Germans priority in entering the Iraqi market. Regarding
the Germans, this commercial priority was granted as a result
of "the firm positive stand of Germany in rejecting the launching of
a military attack against Iraq by the U.S," according to Al-Iraq, a
government-run newspaper. "The importance of this fair is that it is
a clear message that despite the risk of bombing, all these
companies and all these countries still believe in peace," said
Jihad Feghali, the managing Director of France's Nutris Company. The
sanctions committee at the U.N. that reviews contracts between Iraq
and international companies is constantly delaying and holding up
Feghali contracts for review of dual-usage i.e. military value.12
On February 14, 2003, The Irish Examiner reported that Richard
Perle, a former U.S. Assistant Secretary of Defense, said the French
anti-war stance was driven by economic interests. French state
controlled oil giant. TotalFinaElf has exclusive exploration
contracts worth $60 billion to $75 billion to develop the massive
Majnoon and Bin Umar oilfields in southern Iraq, he said. Perle said
oil experts who had analyzed the deal described it
as "extraordinarily lopsided" in favor of the French company.13
CIS Paris, a Parisian broker that is active in dealings of many
kinds with Baghdad, brokered a deal among the Chinese producer, the
Syrian land transporter and the Iraqi buyer of a chemical that is
among the best binders for solid propellant in long range surface-to-
surface missiles. The chemical is a transparent liquid rubber called
hydroxy-terminated polybutadiene, familiarly known in the advanced-
rocket trade as HTPB. This is not for the short-range Al Samoud 2 or
old mobile Scuds. The Chinese producer was Qilu Chemicals, 116 DaWu
Road in Zibo, Shandong province, China. A shipment of 20 tons of
HTPB, the sale of which to Iraq is forbidden by U.N. resolutions and
the oil-for-food agreement, left China in August 2002 in a 40-foot
container. It arrived in the Syrian port of Tartus (the
Mediterranean terminus for an Iraqi oil pipeline today) and was
received there by a trading company that was an intermediary for the
Iraqi missile industry. The HTPB was then trucked across Syria to
Iraq.14 The next day, the French government denied that it had
allowed the sales.15 "Despite French denials, U.S. intelligence and
defense officials have confirmed that Iraq purchased from China a
chemical used in making fuel for long-range missiles, with help from
brokers in France and Syria."16
In 2003, beginning in January, a French company sold aircraft and
helicopter parts to Iraq for its French-made Mirage F-1 jets and
Gazelle attack helicopters.17 This was amidst coalition preparations
to militarily disarm Saddam Hussein and debates on U.N. resolutions
to authorize that action. United Nations inspectors had previously
established that Iraq had modified Mirage F-1 drop tanks for the
delivery of biological and chemical weapons by a variety of means.
On March 6, 2003, UNMOVIC listed these drop tanks among unresolved
disarmament issues.18

By scolding Israel's Sharon, France wallows in disdain

France is native soil to many mysterious theories of international
relations these days, but on Monday, President Jacques Chirac took
the folie to a new level. To prove France rejects anti-Semitism,
Chirac announced that Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon would be
unwelcome in the land of liberté, égalité and fraternité.

The contretemps began on Sunday, when Sharon, speaking to visiting
American Jewish leaders in Jerusalem, commented on the spreading
rash of anti-Semitic incidents in France and encouraged French Jews
to return to Israel "immediately." Despite Sharon's praise for
France's efforts to calm its roiling tensions, Chirac and his
foreign minister, Michel Barnier, took the opportunity to castigate
the Jewish leader on the world stage, calling the
remarks "unacceptable" and disinviting Sharon from a state visit
until he had an "explanation."

We wonder several things here, but first is exactly which part of
the remarks they didn't understand. The calling home of Jews to
Israel has been around practically longer than Israel itself, and
has been a frequent mantra for Sharon long before this week. The
object is as much practical and political as spiritual: As Sharon
has noted, if demographic trends continue as they are, Jews are on
track to become the minority in Israel a few years down the line...
the latest incident has as much to do with Paris's unrelenting
disdain for the United States as with its tension with the Jewish
state. In an editorial on the Sharon speech, the leftist French
newspaper Le Monde noted that "it's not exactly an accident that
Ariel Sharon's remarks ... were made in front of American Jewish
organizations." The piece went on to describe such groups
as "militant" and to suggest they are the ones who, since Sept. 11,
2001, have "poisoned the climate" of relations between Israel and
France.

Is it really a mystery to the French that by recent polls, some 57
percent of Israelis "feel antipathy" toward their country? France,
which is home to the third-largest Jewish population in the world,
has been lending political aid and comfort to the Palestinians for
several decades and quite ostentatiously so in the past handful of
years.

On previous visits to Israel, its representatives spent nearly equal
time with Yasser Arafat in his bunker as with Israeli leaders, even
as the terrorism continued. As a member of the United Nations
Security Council, France has regularly supported U.N. resolutions
condemning Israel. And the state has been supportive of the recent
International Court of Justice's strongly worded, if feckless,
opinion that Israel's protective fence on the West Bank was creating
undue hardships for the Palestinians.

The disproportionate response to Sharon's remarks was the worst kind
of political self-service: By casting itself as the injured party,
France deflected a broader discussion of how its policies in the
Middle East relate to the anti-Semitism within its borders. The
country saw 510 anti-Jewish incidents in the first half of 2004,
compared with 593 for the entire previous year. Earlier this year,
Chirac's efforts to calm religious strife bought the country an
atrocious law prohibiting public school children from wearing any
religious symbols in class, whether headscarves, crosses or the Star
of David.

Following this week's incident, many wire stories hurried to include
the anger of French Jewish groups at Sharon's remarks. The president
of the French Jewish Student Union said in an interview that he
finds it "particularly embarrassing that the Israeli prime minister
would use a subject as serious as anti-Semitism to settle his
accounts with French diplomacy." Really?

For all the bluster, Chirac still bears some responsibility for the
problem Sharon was addressing: Many of the Muslims who have come to
France in the past few years undoubtedly consider the nation an ally
of sorts in their war against Israel and America. The Arab world is
surely grateful and aware of France's role in the international
sphere, and in regards to the war in Iraq, its positions are often
parroted by Middle Eastern newspapers and cited in support of
continuing the fight.

France was once one of Israel's staunchest allies in the years
following independence, a position that eroded as Charles de Gaulle
began edging the state away from Israel in favor of improved Arab
relations — and contracts.

Some have suggested that Sharon's remarks were intended to expose
French bias for the palestinians...
But that dynamic was clear to the political classes long ago. The
real enlightenment has been the chance to see the French on the
world stage, "J'accuse" echoing from the past.

that French Jews are indeed in danger in France and that Israel, to
make a
reality
of major French Jewish immigration to Israel should set up language
enclaves
in which towns, villages, and perhaps even cities, should be created
in which
French is the language spoken. The reason we support language
enclaves is
that one of the main reasons people do not immigrate to Israel is
that they
do not know Hebrew and lack confidence in their ability to learn
Hebrew, thus
we support the creation of a New France in Israel, for French Jews,
just as a
place
called New England was created in what became the United States of
America
for people from England who were not happy in England. We do support
the
teaching of Hebrew to everyone who wishes to learn it of whatever
age but we
feel that it is children who are by nature best able to learn a new
language,
having
none of their own to start with. Thus the children of French Jews
immigrating
to Israel should be taught BOTH French and Hebrew, as they can learn
BOTH
at an early age far easier than their parents and grandparents can
learn Hebrew.
It is far easier to learn a language as a child than as an adult. It
is not
impossible
to learn a new language as an adult, it is simply more difficult.
For Israel to
become more viable, to gain the millions of Jewish immigrants it
needs to
survive,
it must create language enclaves in which Jews from around the world
can feel
confident in their ability to speak and work in the language they
happen to
speak now, be it French, English, Spanish, Russian, etc. Similarly we
support
the creation in the land of Israel, which includes Judea and
Samaria, of a New
America, a New England, a New Canada, a New Argentina, a New Brazil,
a new
Russia,etc. for Jews from America, England, Canada, Argentina,
Brazil, Russia
etc. who would be happier in Israel than in America, England,
Canada, Argentina,
Brazil, Russia, etc. Does this mean that we think that ALL Jews in
America,
England, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, Russia, etc. should immigrate to
Israel?
We think that should be left up to each individual Jew and should in
large part
be based on the situation in each country.

We are terribly disappointed with BOTH George Walker Bush
and John Forbes-Kohn-Kerry for their support of a so-called
palestinian state.
We believe that BOTH George Walker Bush and John Forbes-Kohn-Kerry
should
declare the absolute OPPOSITION to the creation of a so-called
palestinian
state.

ZOA Agrees With Sharon: French Jews
Should Consider Immigrating To Israel

NEW YORK- The Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) has strongly
protested the French Foreign Ministry criticism of Israeli Prime
Minister Ariel Sharon for saying that French Jews should consider
immigrating to Israel, in view of the massive and often violent anti-
Semitism in France.

In response to the many recent instances of violent anti-Semitism in
France, Prime Minister Sharon said: "We see the spread of the
wildest anti-Semitism there ... If I have to advise our brothers in
France, I'll tell them one thing – move to Israel, as early as
possible. I say that to Jews all around the world, but there, I
think it's a must and they have to move immediately."

The French Foreign Ministry declared that Sharon "is not welcome" to
undertake his forthcoming planned visit to France, criticized
Sharon's statement as "unacceptable," and "demanded an explanation."

ZOA National President Morton A. Klein said: "The French Foreign
Ministry is demanding an `explanation' for the Prime Minister's
statement. Well, here it is: violent anti-Semitism in France is out
of control, and the French government's response is to prohibit Jews
from wearing yarmulkes in public schools. In view of the ongoing
violence against Jews in France, not to mention France's long and
sordid history of anti-Semitism, of course French Jews should
seriously consider immigrating to Israel."

The ZOA notes numerous developments confirm Prime Minister Sharon's
assessment, including statements by French leaders that have helped
create a climate of hatred toward Jews and Israel:

* In the first six months of 2004 there were, according to French
Foreign Ministry statistics, 135 physical attacks against Jews in
France – compared to 127 such attacks in all of 2003.

* Jean-Marie Le Pen, leader of the anti-Semitic National Front
Party, received 4.5-million votes in the French presidential
election of 2002.

* The French Ambassador to England, Daniel Bernard, denounced Israel
in December 2001 as "a s---ty little country," yet was not fired.

* French President Jacques Chirac's initial response to the wave of
French anti-Semitism in 2002 was to deny that there was anti-
Semitism and to claim that American Jews, under orders from the
Israeli government, were conspiring to harm France's image.

* Former French Prime Minister – and current European Union MP –
Michel Rocard publicly denied Israel's right to exist. In a lecture
at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Egypt on June 16, 2002, Rocard
said that the 1917 Balfour Declaration, which paved the way for the
creation of Israel, was "a historic mistake." He said Israel is
an "abnormal ... entity that continues to pose a threat to its
neighbors until today."

* French Foreign Minister Michael Barnier refused to undertake a
state visit to Jerusalem during his visit to the region earlier this
month, and instead met with Yasir Arafat, despite Arafat's
continuing sponsorship of the mass murder of Israeli Jews.

Why Bush must win

I support the reelection of President George W. Bush. Why? Because I
believe one
issue overwhelms all others: the President's strong commitment to
fight the
forces of international terrorism regardless of the cost or how long
it takes to
achieve victory.


I do not agree with President Bush on a single major domestic issue,
but in my
view, those issues pale in comparison with the threat of
international
terrorism. Osama bin Laden and Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the evil poster
boys of
mass murder, are revered and supported by millions of Muslims
throughout the
world. The stated goal of al-Qaeda and its supporters is to kill or
convert
every infidel, and that means Jews, Christians, Buddhists, and
everyone else who
will not accept Islam's supremacy.


These terrorists are convinced that non-Islamic nations do not have
the will and
courage to persevere in this ongoing struggle, which could last
decades. They
believe the democracies are weak-willed and will ultimately yield to
whatever
demands are made upon them. By withdrawing their troops from Iraq in
response to
terrorist attacks, Spain and the Philippines have already shown that,
tragically, terror tactics, including suicide attacks, car bombings
and the
beheading of innocent civilians, do work. They also intend to
destroy moderate
Muslim governments that want to live in peace with countries that
are not
Islamic. Shortly after 9/11, President Bush announced his commitment
to the
struggle against Islamic fanatics who believe they can destroy the
values of
western civilization and democratic governments everywhere. On
entering this war
against terrorism after 9/11, President Bush said, "We shall go
after the
terrorists and the countries that harbor them." This Bush Doctrine
rivals in
importance the Monroe Doctrine, which limited the colonization
efforts of
foreign powers in the western hemisphere, and the Truman Doctrine,
which
contained the spread of Communism. President Bush has proven that he
is prepared
to keep to his commitment to fight terrorism.

If John Kerry were to win this presidential election, would he stand
up to
terrorism to the same extent as George Bush? I don't think so.
Regrettably, my
party, the Democratic party, now has a strong radical left wing
whose members
often dominate the party primaries. Those same left-wing radicals
have an
anti-Israel philosophy, reviling that democratic state which shares
the values
held by a majority of Americans.


Kerry is a patriotic American who performed heroically in the
Vietnam War.
Regrettably, he surrendered his philosophical independence to the
left wing in
the recent primaries in order to prevail over the original darling
of the
radicals, Howard Dean. Kerry owes his nomination in large part to
the supporters
of Dean and the support of Senator Ted Kennedy. Kennedy sadly
demonstrated his
loss of any sense of decency with his crude attacks on President
Bush using
unacceptable, abusive language. The hatred deliberately stirred by
Kennedy
directed at President Bush is contemptible and dangerous. It
encourages our
terrorist enemies with whom we are at war, and it incites the
crazies in our own
country.


On July 9th, a Kerry/Edwards fundraising concert was held at Radio
City Music
Hall. During that concert Hollywood comedienne Whoopi Goldberg
engaged in
unprintable, despicable, sexual references to the President and the
Vice
President. She combined the President's family name with allusions
to the female
anatomy, and she made a sexual reference to Vice President Dick
Cheney's first
name by referring to the male anatomy. Even worse was Kerry's thank
you from the
stage to all of the performers saying that they conveyed "the heart
and soul of
our country." Shameful.


Now a comment about the war in Iraq. Most Americans understand that
few, if any,
wars go smoothly. Just cast your mind back to the American
Revolutionary War,
during which New York City was occupied by enemy forces for seven
years, or the
American Civil War, in which Confederate armies won victory after
victory on the
battlefield, or even World War II, in which the Nazi menace was
defeated at an
enormous cost in human lives. Should we have gone to war with Iraq?
I believe
the answer is yes.


During a daily briefing after 9/11, then CIA Director George Tenet
told the
President that Iraq had the ability to wage chemical and biological
war on the
U.S. He referred to Iraq's possession of weapons of mass destruction
as a "slam
dunk." Had the President not engaged in the preemptive war against
Saddam, and
if this madman had subsequently released biological agents in the
U.S. or poison
gas, which he had already used against the Kurds and Iran, does
anyone doubt
that the President would have been impeached? The security agencies
of nearly
every democratic nation provided to their President or Prime
Minister the same
description of Iraq's weapons of mass destruction capability. The
U.S. Congress
had the same information and concurred with the President's
decision. The U.N.
Security Council unanimously concurred, passing Resolution 1441. But
it was
President Bush who had the courage to take up arms in defense of the
U.S. and
our allies. That is what leadership is all about.


A poll released by the Washington Post on July 14, 2004, showed
that "55 percent
of Americans approve of the way Bush is handling the campaign against
terrorism," and "51 percent also said they trust Bush more than
Kerry to deal
with terrorism, while 42 percent prefer the Democrat."


We also should not forget that President Bush, in my opinion, has
been the
greatest friend Israel has ever had in the White House. At the U.N.
Security
Council and in the U.N. General Assembly, allies of the U.S. and
others who are
indifferent or hostile to our country have conveyed the view that if
we end our
alliance with Israel, the only democracy in the Middle East, they
would welcome
back the U.S. into their circle. President Bush has refused to
abandon our ally
Israel. In my opinion, the U.S. presidents who have been Israel's
greatest
friends are, in order, the current President Bush, Ronald Reagan and
Bill
Clinton. This November, we Americans in the Jewish community should
remember our
friends. We should thank President Bush for his courage in the war
against
terrorism and for his strong and consistent support for Israel and
democracy.

are not good for arabs or for anyone else. They are still tied, in
all too many
instances, to support for those arab despots from Syria to Egypt to
Saudi Arabia
to Yemen and the Persian Gulf and beyond, arafat included. That is
truly
tragic, for if the arab peoples of the world are to
advance it must be through democracy, not through despotism. So John
Forbes-Kohn-Kerry, who will not get the votes of most arab Americans
because
so many arab Americans hate Jews and Senator John Forbes-Kohn-Kerry
has partial
Jewish ancestry through his father's father, should also say in his
own
way: "F--- the arab Americans They Don't Vote For Us Anyway."

Jewish Voters May Decide 2004 Presidential Election

Though Jews make up a relatively small percentage of Americans
overall there is a very high turnout among Jewish voters relative to
voter turnout from other American voters. This high voter turnout
among
American Jewish voters ,combined with the presence of Jewish voters
in key swing states in the 2004 election could decide the election.

The electoral college is winner take all. Because Bush was awarded
the vote in Florida in 2000 he was able to take office as President.

Florida, which is the home of many Jewish voters is one key swing
state that may also decide the 2004 Presidential election.

New Jersey is another such key swing state. It has a very high
percentage
of Jewish voters and a very high turnout among those voters. Jewish
voters
may constitute as much as 10% of the overall voter turnout in New
Jersey's
2004 Presidential election.
We continue to view New Jersey as a swing state that could decide
the 2004 Presidential election. Bill Clinton took New Jersey by only
2% in 1992 against then President Bush.
Now the New Jersey Democratic party and the Democratic Governor of

Kerry, who after Tuesday's primaries has solidified his position as
the front-runner in the race for the Democratic presidential
nomination, appeals to competing constituencies otherwise at odds in
the battle for the Democratic soul. His Jewish stump speech
delivered with vigor
and passion, with barely a pause cites the
Roosevelt administration's decision to turn away a ship of Jews
fleeing Nazi-occupied Europe as a failure of U.S. policy he would
never repeat. He says he stood atop Masada and felt the echoes of
Jewish resistance call to him. He shouts, extending each syllable
with his broad Brahmin vowels: "Am Yisrael Chai!" People who have
known Kerry a long time say that such diversity is natural to any
Boston politician, who has to deal with large ethnic communities.
That includes a Jewish community of 275,000, about 4.5 percent of
the state's total population. the Boston Globe uncovered his
grandfather's Jewish birth a year ago. Kerry's grandfather,
Frederick, had been at pains to hide his Judaism long before his
arrival in the United States. He had changed his name from Kohn to
Kerry. His business career in the United States rose and then fell;
he shot himself to death in a Boston hotel in 1921. The article
suggested that without the considerable research resources of a
newspaper like the Globe, Kerry had no way of uncovering his
grandfather's origins although he had tried over the years. He was
apparently stunned when he found out a year ago. Now he routinely
mentions the fact when he campaigns among Jews. Lipsman, the
recently elected Iowa delegate, recalls telling Kerry, when she
first met him, that she favored Connecticut Sen. Joseph Lieberman

Cameron's conversion to Judaism 20 years ago after marrying a Boston

DETROIT When Cameron Kerry fell in love with Oak Park, Mich., native
Kathy Weinman, he chose to convert from Catholicism to Judaism.
Little did he know that he already had a strong Jewish connection.
His father's parents were Jewish, a fact uncovered last year when the
Boston Globe hired a genealogist to check into the family roots of
his brother, John Kerry, the Democratic presidential frontrunner
thought by many to be of Irish background.
The Kerry family was traced back to a small town in the Austrian
empire, now part of the Czech Republic. There, the paper discovered
that before immigrating to America, the Kerrys changed their name
from Kohn and converted from Judaism to Catholicism.
"It was mind-blowing," says Cam Kerry about first learning his
grandparents' true history from the newspaper story. Also surprising
to him was the number of Jews in his synagogue who came up to him
with similar stories. "It's an American story, " he says.
It also could be a powerful Jewish story if John Kerry wins the
White House. He would be the first president of the US with Jewish
roots.
"If my zaydie (grandfather) could see this election," says Anne
Weinman, Cam's Farmington Hills mother-in-law, who with her husband,
Joe, originally emigrated from Eastern Europe.
"Joe, and I are first-generation Americans and it was inconceivable
back then that we could be connected to the president of the US."
Cam's wife, Kathy Weinman, adds, "We have to pinch ourselves once in
a while. It's amazing to have a ringside seat to history in the
making."
She and their two daughters, ages 13 and 17, also have participated
in this history. They were in New Hampshire during the primary. Her
daughters campaigned for their uncle, knocking on doors, making
calls and holding up signs. Their elder daughter worked in Iowa and
volunteered for the Kerry campaign last summer.
Cam, 53, has taken time off from his law firm, Mintz Levin in
Boston, and from his position as an adjunct telecommunications law
professor at Suffolk Law School there, to work on his brother's
presidential campaign.
Earlier this month, prior to the Michigan Democratic caucuses on
Feb. 7, he was in Detroit stumping for his brother.
He stayed with his in-laws in Farmington Hills, where, Anne says,
she keeps a kosher kitchen. Cam, who is knowledgeable of Jewish
dietary laws, is one of the few people she trusts in it.
Cam's wife, Kathy, 49, attended Oak Park High School and went to
Hebrew school at B'nai David in Southfield, Mich. Her mother is a
former English teacher at Berkley High and her father was part owner
of Murray Lighting in Detroit.
The Weinmans now belong to Beth Ahm in West Bloomfield.
After graduating from the University of Michigan law school in 1979 -
- magna cum laude
Kathy got her first job at a law firm in
Washington, DC.
At the same firm she met Cam, also a magna cum laude graduate (of
Boston College Law School). The two were married in 1983.
Though brought up Catholic, he decided to convert to Judaism before
the marriage.
"I was influenced by Kathy," says Cam. "Judaism is deeply held and
meaningful to her. Early on, we established we would raise any
children we had as Jewish. So it flowed from that. To be a full
participant in their religious education, I would convert."
Cam says what appealed to him about Judaism was the role of study in
the religion, that it valued learning and intellectual pursuits,
which were comfortable and a part of his upbringing.
He adds that standing on the bimah for each of his daughters' bat
mitzvahs as a full participant made his religious commitments well
worth it.
"Judaism is central to us," says Kathy, who is active in her
suburban Boston synagogue, Temple Israel in Brookline. "Judaism is a
core of my life and important to our family."
When asked how the Catholic and Jewish sides of the family relate,
Kathy replies, "It's a terrific relationship."
She says that candidate Kerry was supportive when his brother
converted to Judaism. He and his family have attended both nieces'
baby namings and bat mitzvahs. Kathy says she is very close to John
Kerry's two daughters.
And the Weinman and Kerry families have become mishpachah (family),
says Anne Weinman.
Cam's late "blueblood" mother, Rosemary, whose heritage goes back to
colonial times with family names like Winthrop and Forbes, and his
late father, Richard, were wonderful people proud of all four of
their children: Peggy, John, Diana and Cam. She adds that the Kerry
family including Cam's parents and John were present when Cam and
Kathy's daughters were named at the temple.
"Religion has never been an issue between Cam and his [side of the]
family," Kathy says. "John's always loved participating in our happy
occasions. He's always been there and part of our family."
The Weinmans say they are very active in the Kerry campaign. They
support the candidate because of his stand on the environment and
education, Anne says.
"I have a greater appreciation for the early caucus and primaries
and the role they play," Kathy says. "Our country is so big and it's
impossible for everyone to know the candidates. But the Iowans and
the people of New Hampshire get that opportunity. We saw them get to
know my brother-in-law and his opponents. They made their judgment
from the place of knowledge and understanding."
Of course, when asking Cam or the Weinmans why people should vote
for Kerry, you won't get a strengths-and-weaknesses kind of answer.
However, the warmth and intimacy of the reply gives another insight
into this political family of diverse backgrounds.
"There's nobody else I want by my side in a tough situation than my
brother," says the easy-going Cam, who has been at his brother's
side for all of John's campaigns for office.
"In times of war and great economic challenge, he's the kind of
leader we need."

Both Kerry brothers said they were surprised and pleased to learn

"He'll listen to every side of the story, and he'll make the final

Israel advocates across the political spectrum are quick to say that
Kerry's voting record is "stellar."
On the domestic issues Jews care about, Kerry's record is
unchallenged. He actually may be one of the few leading legislators
who excites Orthodox and Reform Jews alike.
"He's very good at navigating the waters of the diversity of the
Jewish community...Kerry's suggestion that he would consider former
President
Carter
and former US Secretary of State James Baker as Middle East envoys
has especially worried some in the pro-Israel community.
Both Carter and Baker are unpopular among many pro-Israel activists.
A top Jewish Kerry supporter, New York Assembly speaker Sheldon
Silver, told the Forward recently that Kerry has backed down from
his intentions on appointing the pair of envoys.
That has not stopped anonymous opponents from circulating e-mails
citing the Baker and Carter references as a reason not to support
Kerry.
Kerry's supporters say the candidate will survive such attacks as it
becomes clear that while he listens to a broad range of opinion, in
the end he relies mostly on pro-Israel opinion, diverse as it is, in
his assessments of US policy in the Middle East.
"I'm one of the people who call on his office," said Glazier, of
AIPAC, "and he'll come and meet with us personally. Most people will
send their foreign policy adviser, but John takes quite a lot of
time to take questions."

(CBS) A high-ranking al Qaeda detainee told investigators the
intended target of United Airlines Flight 93, which crashed into a
Pennsylvania field on Sept. 11, was the White House.
Government sources said Abu Zubaydah, now in U.S. custody, is
believed to be the source of the information. He is being
interrogated by U.S. officials at an undisclosed location.
Investigators have linked Zubaydah directly to hijackers on board
Flight 93.
United Flight 93 took off from Newark, N.J., and crashed in Somerset
County, Pa.. A recorder on the plane and calls made to people on the
ground indicate passengers fought for control with the hijackers
before it went down.
The San Francisco-bound jet had turned toward Washington and U.S.
fighter jets were flying to intercept it when it crashed. All 44
people aboard were killed.
Officials previously had assumed the White House was a likely
target, but said the Capitol and CIA headquarters in McLean, Va.,
near Washington were other possibilities.Abu Zubaydah is believed to
have played a key role in organizing the Sept. 11 attacks, officials
said. As al Qaedas top operational planner, he ran the Khalden camp
in Afghanistan, where U.S. investigators have learned many of the
Sept. 11 hijackers trained. This suggests Abu Zubaydah may have had
direct contact with the hijackers and chosen them for training.
He also had telephone contacts with at least one Arab student at
U.S. flight schools, according to a July 10, 2001, memo from a
Phoenix FBI agent.
The CIA, FBI and Pakistani authorities captured and wounded Abu
Zubaydah in a raid by in Faisalabad, Pakistan, in March. He is
believed to have masterminded the failed millennium bombing plots in
Los Angeles and Jordan, and has been linked to failed plots on the
U.S. embassies in Paris and Sarajevo.
Abu Zubaydah was also indirectly linked, through a web of
associations with other al Qaeda members in Europe, to lead Sept. 11
hijacker Mohammed Atta and his cell in Hamburg, Germany. Three
members of the Hamburg cell were suicide hijackers; three others are
still at large. Ziad Jarrah, believed to be the pilot-hijacker of
Flight 93, was a member of the Hamburg cell.
