Description

The News from Nowhere Club has been meeting since 1997, formerly located on the web at newsfromnowhere.info has moved to this new location due to persistent hacking. The discussion group meets in public once a month on the second saturday of every month. The discussions start at 8pm, with access from 7.30 pm onwards. Entrance is open to all and free. Voluntary donations are accepted. Meetings are at the Epicentre, West St, Leytonstone London E11.

The groups name comes from the utopian novel by William Morris ' The News from Nowhere' first published in 1892. It was a vision of a life in the 21st century where money has been abolished and goods and services are provided for free. The Houses of Parliament have been demolished and now provide for a place to store horse manure. There are descriptions of a London that has been partly demolished to make way for larger green space. Shepherds tend to flocks of sheep in Kensington. It is partly an expression of a desire to move away from the over production of useless consumer goods and also a move away from a strictly commercial rationale to most aspects of existence.
The group had received funding from the local council to provide free access for all until 2007. The group will now only receive funding for publicity, not for providing meeting facilities.
The London Borough of Waltham Forest features William Morris in their municipal signage and support the William Morris Gallery in Walthamstow. He was born there in 1834,son of an affluent share dealer in the City of London.
The group has had 113 speakers/events: green economist Mayer Hillman, Educationalist Melian Mansfield, Peace campaigner Pat Arrowsmith, Solidarity activist Ken Weller, FoE’s Ron Bailey, Mclibel defendant Dave Morris, Prof. Jerry White , Singer-songwriter Leon Rosselson, Author and Government commentator Professor Peter Hennesey, Roma refugees, Economist Alan Shipman, Professor Bill Fishman, Tony Benn, Poet Moniza Alvi, science writer Marek Kohn.
