Cathy McCormack
The Wee Yellow Butterfly is Cathy McCormack’s inspiring story of how, from unpromising beginnings, she has spent her life committed to seeking justice and finding fulfillment. This book is a grassroots analysis of the social, economic and psychological world war waged against the poor under Thatcher, New Labour and the American administrations. At the Sharp End of the Knife - a screening of the documentary film that Barbara Orton and Cathy McCormack made in 1999. “An 'eye-level' view as we go with Scottish activist Cathy McCormack into the township heartlands of South Africa to see how fellow activists are faring, in building the 'New' South Africa. She may be dodging bullets, but in the people she meets, finds energy and inspiration, making intriguing parallels with her own life in Easterhouse and theirs” As well as a relaunch of this book and a rare screening of this film there will be a discussion and public debate around the issues, hosted by Cathy.

SATURDAY  12th DEC
stalls   10.00am - 7.00pm

Refreshments    12.00pm onwards
BrothMix - Stone Soup
An empty pot and a stone is the starter for this soup... it takes its form with whatever donations of vegetables, herbs, pulses and other foodstuffs are given to the pot. So look in the back of your cupboard for a lonely potato or lentil, dig up some winter veg or bring in some garnish and help feed everyone who is hungry! Home made breads and other baking will also be on offer.

Discussion    12.00 - 1.30pm
May Day Open Discussion
Reclaim the Day! What does May Day mean? What do we want it to be? How can we all work together? This forum isn't just hippy navel gazing; by planning ahead we can be more efficient, more effective (more mischievous?) So come along and let us know what you think, whether you're representing an affinity group or an army of one. Dissent isn't just encouraged, it's pretty much an assumed prerequisite, but hopefully we can all at least agree on a date.

Workshop / Discussion    1.30 - 2.30pm
Gender 101
A workshop/discussion on sex, gender and sexuality. As well as looking at the basics we'll be exploring radical trans/queer politics and the relationship between gender and class. We'll also be discussing these issues within the context of radical communities and how we can avoid reproducing systems of oppression. All welcome.

DVD Launch    2.30 - 3.30pm
John La Rose Tribute
John La Rose (1927 - 2006) was a writer and activist who founded the International Book Fair of Radical Black and Third World Books. This new DVD includes documentation of a tribute event for La Rose held in 2006, and features contributions from Linton Kwesi Johnson, Horace Ove, Jim Kelman, Tom Leonard, Raman Mundair, Alasdair Gray and Roxy Harris.

Forum    3.30 - 5.00pm
Glasgow Anarchist Forum
An opportunity for anarchists of all shades to meet, have a chat, see what others are up to and talk about projects and campaigns we'd like to work on. Ideal for those wanting to get involved in activism in Glasgow to find out what's going on and which groups are active.

Discussion    5.00 - 6.00pm
How We Organise
No game playing, no ranting, no moaning, just "organisation".

Film Screening    7.00 - 9.00pm
Zapatistas: Chronicle of a Rebellion
This film has a history of its own. The documentary's first version, originally entitled La Guerra de Chiapas and released in late January 1994, was one of the first journalistic efforts to present and analyse the Zapatista uprising. Ten years later, in 2004, a second version was released. This third and updated edition includes images of the Zapatistas' most recent campaign, ‘la otra campaña’. It also investigates the role of the Zapatistas in the events surrounding the elections of 2006 and their involvement in the (brutally repressed) social movements in Atenco and Oaxaca. Furthermore, this new version documents the Mexican government's strategy of militarization, accelerated under the current presidency of Felipe Calderón, which is putting the Zapatista communities under increasing pressure.

Availed myself of the Weekly Worker once again to comment on a SSPer slagging off Solidarity and Sheridan .

True vote

Rikki Reid writes: “Even though the by-election result was piss-poor for the SSP, it was a true vote of people supporting a socialist candidate rather than one carried by a media personality†(Letters, November 26).

And, of course, when the Scottish Socialist Party added “Convenor: Tommy Sheridan†to its party name on ballot papers in previous elections that was NOT indulging in personality politics, was it?

As for the claim that the SSP vote was a “true vote†for a socialist candidate, one look at the election manifesto shows a menu of reforms and palliatives rather than the demand for socialism. If socialists are going to contest elections, it should be done on the basis of getting elected on a straight, socialist maximum programme of common ownership and production for use, with a view to using parliament or the local council chamber as a platform from which to spread socialist ideas (while still in a minority) and to help usher in socialism (when a majority is achieved and acting on instructions from a mass, democratically organised and socialist-minded movement outside). This is quite different from getting elected with non-socialist votes on a programme of attractive-sounding reforms to capitalism - a ploy by a vanguard to attract a following.

When no true socialist candidate is standing, as was the case in Glasgow North East, the Socialist Party of Great Britain recommends a write-in vote for socialism - a spoiled ballot paper with ‘world socialism’ written across it.

As Eugene V Debs said, “I’d rather vote for something I want and not get it than vote for something I don’t want and get it.†Or John Quincy Adams: “Always vote for principle, though you may vote alone, and you may cherish the sweetest reflection that your vote is never lost.â€

Not sure who this group is ( a bit ICC or CWO worker councilish ?) . Rather suspicious of "peasants’ and indigenous people’s current resistance " , sounds as if the Zapatistas has a input in their analysis but i think if we were to have any influence it would be the workshop on "what real communism would be like" since of all political groups , we are perhaps the best place to present a coherent worldview of what socialism will be in practice . Otherwise , i just see ourselves getting bogged down on the parliament question that they appear quite dismissive of .

Wish whoever goes best of luck but the format seems dreadful , 3 hours of platform speakers with i suppose an element of Q and A and only 45 minutes of workshop then another 45 minutes of them , with 1 hour 15 mins of summing ups , yuk

FYI:

the global commune

26112009

It is now 20 years since the collapse of the Berlin Wall. For most people this signalled the end of communism. However, there has always been another view, which understands that the USSR and its satellites and emulators were never communist, socialist or workers’ states. They represented the negation of communism. The socialist transition is not based upon ‘The State’ taking over the functions of private capital, nor ‘The Party’ taking over the functions of a self-organised working class.

Today we face the worst economic crisis for nearly eighty years, accompanied by growing environmental deterioration, and increased powerlessness and loss of hope. Yet the majority of socialists today are not prepared to make the case for a viable alternative social order to get us beyond the ever-deepening capitalist crisis. Often we get little more than vague populist sloganeering – ‘Make Poverty History’ or ‘Make Greed History’. To most workers these sound as hollow as the world of ‘virtual reality’ pushed by the corporate media to divert our attention from the very mundane, or sometimes, desperate reality, we face in our everyday lives. Furthermore, calls for people’s largely passive support through five minutes spent at the polling station can seem a poor alternative, even compared to the promise of ‘five minutes of fame’ in the corporate media spotlight.

Pushing for more state intervention (never asking whose state they seeking to further strengthen), or opting for purely local initiatives (which may be desirable, but limited in their impact) can never break the overall control of corporate capital and the even bleaker future its continued rule will bring to our world. We need to highlight the impasse their corporate imperialism has brought us to, and the grave threats involved in all attempts to bolster their capitalist order. We need to think internationally.

Rosa Luxemburg once said that if we fail to overturn capitalism, we would face ‘Socialism or Barbarism’. Ever worsening exploitation and oppression, two devastating world wars, countless brutal imperial interventions and recurrent economic crises, mean we should update this to say ‘Genuine Communism, or Barbarism – if you are lucky’.
Genuine communism means complete human emancipation and liberation, where society is organised on the basis of ‘From each according to their abilities, to each according to their needs’, and ‘Where the free development of each is the condition of the free development of all.’ The socialist transition involves workers creating this new society using new forms of association in a global commune. We need to build upon workers’, peasants’ and indigenous people’s current resistance and outline a communist vision which develops their independent class struggles and offers humanity a real alternative.

This is why, the RCN, with the support of The Commune, has organised The Global Commune day school so that socialists today can lift their sights higher, and begin to seriously discuss how we can break free of the legacy of ‘official’ and ‘dissident’ Communism, and begin to create the type of society that we wish to live in, if humanity is to have a real future.

Come and join us. Register your intention to take part on:-

DISCUSSION GROUP

This discussion group was attended by 10 SPGB members and 6 ZM supporters. Myra Graham opened the discussion on The Zeitgeist Movement at 8.40 pm she spoke for about 30 minutes. She stressed that the Zeitgeist Movement was in its infancy but was growing at a rapid speed. She claimed that it was possible for it to combine with other groups. She mentioned the Green Party as a possible ally. She praised people like Ghandi, Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandella. She also claimed that capitalism was in decline and spoke in favour of local currency schemes! The chair ruled that questions and points of view were to be brief and that Myra would answer them at the end.

About 7 or 8 SP members and 1 ZM supporter took part in the discussion. Myra then replied to some of the points raised, but not all of them. She had to motor up to Aberdeen tonight so the proceedings ended at about 9.45 pm. It was generally agreed that the discussion had been worthwhile and conducted in a friendly manner. We will have to come up with new topics for next year. What would you like to see discussed? Get back to me with your ideas.

Comrades,

Comrade Anderson had a similar experience at a meeting of their in
Edinburgh in respect of their capitalist philanthropy idea.

That was excellent work you did in attracting 7 ZM supporters to your
discussion meeting, as well as the potential follow up meeting.

DISCUSSION GROUP

This discussion group was attended by 12 SPGB members and 7 ZM supporters. Comrade V.Vanni opened the discussion on The Zeitgeist Movement by reporting that he had attended with R.Donnelly and P.Hendrie one of their discussion groups in Glasgow where the main speaker had been Myra Graham. The meeting had varied in number but was about 10 in all. Much of what was said about present day society and the need for a moneyless, propertyless one to replace it we had to agree with. The main sticking point about their position and ours was the need for political action. Their speaker also seemed to think that capitalist philanthropists had a major contribution to make. He had since read through a lengthy document from the group much of which he agreed with. The plan for future cities seemed a bit SF to him and again how we would get from capitalism to their goal was unclear. The discussion that followed was extremely worthwhile and the next discussion group should prove to be even more rewarding now that we have cleared the air a bit. The ZM will be sending Myra Graham as the opening speaker and a good attendance of members is called for.

Dear Comrades,
I thought you might be interested in this email I got from Raymond Armstrong. It could provide background for our forthcoming discussion group.
All the best, Dick

Hi Dick,
I spoke to Vic last Monday and I just thought I would take this opportunity to email you. I am writing because I cannot attend the next branch meeting on the 21st because I am working that night. Last week I went down to London for the weekend in order to attend the Jacques Fresco/Roxanne Meadows lecture event on Oct 3rd. Since finding out about Zeitgeist in the summer (by way of the party blog) I continued to search for evidence that the whole thing was too good to be true and by going to London to hear the ZG hierarchy speak my suspicions were confirmed.
Initially when I first came across the whole ZG thing I was euphoric and it was in this mood that I came to the branch meeting exclaiming that ZG was " the spark that the party had been waiting for for 105 years". Bollocks...it aint! The more I look into it the more I realise that ZG is a hopelessly misguided and ultimately dishonest phenomenon that could end up doing more harm than good in the end. If you have the time or inclination Dick you can access the audio recording of the lecture. If you go to www.thezeitgeistmovement.com then go to the forum, find the News thread then scroll down to "High quality audio of Fresco's 1st London Lecture, Oct 3rd 2009". Click on this and you will find the "life without keys" link then choose "Q+A Audio with Jaques Fresco and Roxanne Meadows". I tried my best to ask a question but I was nervous as the place was packed with 400 people. I come in at about 17 mins 30 seconds into the recording. I think by listening to Roxanne Meadows' vain attempt to answer my question you will understand my growing disatisfaction with the whole ZG thing. They are making their whole ethos up as they go along
Even more illuminating is the most recent radio broadcast by Peter Joseph last wednesday which can be accessed on the global website. Initially I thought he was probably the most coherent of the three and rather brilliant but on hearing this broadcast I just realised how utterly confused he is, to the extent that he contradicts himself in a major way through the broadcast by explaining what plans ZG has in store when the "transition" comes. Basically what they propose is the gradual ending of capitalism by the construction of gigantic futuristic mega cities which will serve by example as a colossal social domino effect. They hope that one by one all nations will come on board and thus present conditions can be phased out. This process will begin according to Peter Joseph in the lush jungle of a "Progressive Socialistic Country" in South America (presumably run by Hugo Chavez, who seemed to be having a great time with Gaddafi at a recent summit). Dick I don't have to go into why this is doomed from the start, that would be like preaching to the converted.
Apart from this P.J asserts that after the initial phase of the dissemination of ZG ideas, the working class (a term incidentally he never utilises...in fact none of them do) should commence a campaign of mass civil disobedience like not paying rent and failing to submit tax returns etc etc. In my eyes this is just futile romance. The ZG faith in such a worldwide campaign is further enhanced by the ultimate collapse of Capitalism which they imagine is just around the corner and which they hope will save us. Add to this the fact that the entire concepts of Class, Politics and History are conveniently air brushed out of the entire Venus Project equation, then one begins to find a great many potholes in their argument.
When one guy at the lecture posed the question "Isn't ZG just Communism?" Roxanne and Jacques swiftly replied, saying conveniently that ZG had nothing to do with Communism or Socialism since they were just different versions of the monetary system and this was why ZG had to divorce itself from being seen as a political movement. Ok one level this is almost accurate but what they are saying is also a kind of smokescreen. It's misleading. I am convinced that Fresco knows what it is all about in terms of state capitalism etc. But he's not letting on. At all costs they want members members members at the expense of throwing out the baby with the bath water. You could be mistaken for thinking that the entire idea of a moneyless, stateless society was invented by Fresco if the cult of personality that surrounds him is anything to go by. Certainly he is the centre of the movement both ideologically and "spiritually" whilst Roxanne and Peter are his adoring acolytes. Don't get me wrong Dick the old Guy has great things to say and in general ZG has roughly got it right with their examination of how this system operates and their blueprint of a "Resource Based Economy". But it's their idea of the bit in the middle that's fucked and bombed...how we get there.
The final nails in the coffin for me come with the fact that ZG has no effective means of measuring membership other than a counter on the website which estimates how many people have "joined" by simply adding their email address. There is no knowledge test or Declaration of Principles which leads to a situation where it ends up being an umbrella organisation or "Broad Church" where people like Myra (who in my eyes after one meeting with her is a perfect personification of the movement) thrive because ideologically they are all over the place. It's frustrating Dick because they are so near and yet so far from us. Is there any hope for them in your estimation? I would be interested to know what you think. Norman has come to the same conclusions as me and both of us tried to wrest hope from this situation. What is undeniably positive is the fact that they propose a society which is almost identical to ours, and at least they may serve a function in opening workers eyes up to the fact that we could live without money. But for me it ends there and to be honest I am on the precipice of just forgetting about the whole thing.
I must admit however that I am finding it difficult to forget about it, because it's so tantalising I guess. But even now I am drifting away from it. Could this be the start of something big Dick or just a highly updated new rehash of what sparked in Russia in 1905? At the moment I am inclined to go for the latter. Norman said that it's emergence could be seen as being positive and that it might morph into something else down the line. I guess you could say that the left wing reformists movements came first, then the greens, then anti-globalisation/anarchists and now Zeitgeist. Could this ZG thing develop again into the mass party of the workers? I fuckin hope so but I can't see it. If so they need the S.P.G.B/WSM to act as teachers. I am glad that ZG will be the topic for discussion at the next branch meeting. I also understand that Myra might be giving a presentation on ZG at the branch meeting the following month. I feel sorry for her because I think she will be shot down like a Sopwith Camel. Finding out the truth about this organisation came as a crushing disappointment to me Dick. Is there any hope at all or will humanity forever trip itself up with movements like this until we are all finally released from capitalism by an extinction event like a global nuclear war or environmental catastrophe? That's the way it's going... Anyway I'm off Dick. Hope all is well with you. Cheers Raymond

Hi Alan
I sent out a copy of the Edinburgh branch minutes to the members
as well as copies of EC minutes etc.
the main purpose was that members being aware of this correspondence
would not need it read to them and the time saved could be used for the discussions.
As the various items like our own branch minutes were adopted, the Edinburgh branch's
were adopted more from habit than anything else,
your point is correct, it should have said, made available to members.
I'll make this point clear next meeting.
Peter

THE RISE OF THE BNP
COMMUNITY CENTRAL HALLS
304 MARYHILL ROAD GLASGOW
Wednesday 16th September 09
8.30 pm
Speaker Dick Donnelly

Introduction

The recent rise of the BNP as exemplified by them gaining local council seats
and now returning two European Members of Parliament in this year's election
makes it necessary for us to have a look at this organisation and what it stands
for. Towards that end we intend to deal with this introduction to the subject in
three parts.

Overviews

1. The past of far right organisations.

All during the 20th century there has been a far right element in British
politics. Inside the Conservative Party we have had such organisations as the
League of Empire Loyalists. They saw the threat of a diminishment of the British
Empire as the great evil to be fought against. With the advent of the Russian
revolution in 1917 and the rise of the Labour party to replace the Liberal
party, this element became more and more evident. It was during the Thirties
however that the far right became a more potent force in British politics. The
rise of the NAZI party in Germany and Mussolini in Italy were a great stimulus
to far right ideas in the UK. Mosley and his fascists supporters were supported
during the 1930s by such establishment institutions as the Daily Mail.

2. The causes behind the BNP rise.

The most obvious reason has been put down to immigration. Indeed when Enoch
Powell made his infamous "rivers of blood" speech his sole reason for proposed
action was immigration. It is worth noting that his greatest support was not
from re-tired colonels regretting the demise of the British Empire but from
London dock workers. This I think gives us a clue to their present rise. One of
the most important reasons for the rise of the SNP was the failures of the
Labour Party, and likewise a powerful ingredient to the rise of the BNP. While a
core element of the support of the BNP is nationalism and racism it is the loss
of support for the Labour party that has been a large factor in their growth.
The growth of unemployment has also led to the "British jobs for British people"
nonsense.

3. How to deal with this organisation.

The left wing political parties have no doubts about the actions to take. Do
not allow them a platform. Break up their meetings. Use violence against their
demonstrations. In fact in the past when the SPGB attempted to have a public
debate with the far right it was broken up by left wingers. "No platform for
fascists" is their oft repeated mantra. We take the opposite view. Only by
debate can their stupid ideas be exposed. The present upsurge is probably only a
temporary movement but the SPGB should nevertheless analyse why it is happening
and be prepared to deal with their growth.

Comrades,

  Edinburgh branch members,Jimmy Moir ,Matt Culbert,Fraser Anderson,met
at ACE in Montgomery Place on Wednesday 26th, for informal discussion
meeting.
We were joined by Alex Heavens who updated us on work he was doing for
our stall to make it more attractive. We were later joined by Allison who
had seen us on the internet.A discussion arose on various subjects,

The rise of the BNP.
Allison shared her experience of being made a target of their racist
behaviour.
A general discussion arose on workers attraction to them.

Unions:
Fraser ,Jimmy and Matt shared on past present, and briefly, future union
situations regarding union members expectations,as well as some member's
organisational activities.

General :Zeigeist:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zeitgeist
Some discussion of the Zeitgeist movement, but the traditional meaning of
zeitgeist was well explored, through 60's 70's and present reflections of
our class consciousness, stratifications and challenges presented by
issues,in respect of women, and other issues.

Much of the above is only recognised on reflection, by this writer,as we
were in a "conversational" mode, rather than engaged in theoretical
postulations.:-)

Cheers,

Matt

Comrades,

Jimmy Moir ,myself and Alex Heavens (sympathiser),set a table with
literature up on Princes St. 2.00pm till 4.00pm.
at the Wellington statue.(East-end).

http://www.princes-street.com/photo-gallery/princes-street/ps-005a.jpg

Fraser was working ,so couldnt get along.

We had a pleasant and reasonable day of it, with perhaps a dozen people
over speaking to us.

Some passed by quipping and one giving clench fisted salute, in
response,I think, to the banner.

It looked good.I will try to remember a camera for next week.

We didn't sell any Lit., but were happy to give a number of Standard
back-issues away, as well as some other surplus leaflets.

Alex took the table and Lit away with him, he intends to do some
modification to enable a more secure display, as leaflets blow off.

As this was the first outing ,we need to replenish some gear ,tacks and
wire or string etc.

We need to make up small packages of introductory material as well, to
give to anyone interested.

We'll get there in the end.

Fraternally,

Matt
