your calls and emails to the Mayor and other political figures, and your

The lively "tango orgy" of dancing, partying and learning, which is
The 4th ANNUAL NYC SUMMER TANGO FESTIVAL begins Thurs. July 22, with........

³LUCILLE'S QUIRKY EAST VILLAGE WALKING, CHATTING AND CHEWING TOUR².
designed for our festival's visitors by tanguera Lucille. Lucille is a
long-time East Villager (who conceived the idea of our festival
in the first place!) who wants to introduce visitors to the charms, quirks,
and history of this ethnically and artistically diverse part of town.

The tour starts at 8th St. and 4th Ave. at Astor Place (in front of
Starbucks), 12:00. The chewing will take place around 1:15. At 3:00,
Lucille guides you back to the subway and down to a Hit and Run milonga on
the Staten Island Ferry (yes, it was her quirky idea some 8 or 9 years ago).

Astor Place was named after John Jacob by mistake--should have been after
the great tango composer, Astor Piazzola, who lived near. We might have a
renaming ceremony at this time.

You'll visit 3 historic sites within 300 feet of Astor Place,
Pay homage to the place where Piazzolla lived,
See one of the quirkiest garden structures on earth,
Get a quirky souvenir from our quirky, kitsch-packed lunch stop,
Peek in some quirky shops,
Stop at the Charlie Parker residence,
Pop into one of the most famous old-timey Italian pastry shops,
and more all within a few square blocks.

It will be leisurely, fun, and even informative.

So, rain or shine, 12:00, in front of the Starbucks at Astor Place. Many
buses and subways go there.

Free for those in full festival package. $10 for all other tango dancers.
Eats not included. Reservations for the tour helpful.

Dear Friends,

Welcome to another Close-Embrace.com Newsletter. As always, if you do not
wish to receive further updates please write back and we will remove you
from the list.

1. NEW! Tango Embellishments Section and more

-There is a new section on Close-Embrace.com about embellishments. It has a
general overview, plus an 'Embellishment of the Week' page which will be
updated regularly. I plan to add pictures to these tutorials soon as well.
Enjoy!:
http://www.close-embrace.com/tangoembellishments.html

-There is new advice under the Ask Maleva column; see it by clicking here or
read it at the end of this newsletter:
http://www.close-embrace.com/askmaleva.html

-There are more NYC candid photos posted on Close-Embrace.com as well. See
them here:
http://www.close-embrace.com/candids.html
I also have pictures from South Street Seaport on the Fourth of July. It
was a beautiful night! Those pictures should go up tonight (Wednesday).

-New articles are posted under:
http://www.close-embrace.com/articles.html
Ok, ok, so these are actually mambo articles by Steve Wasserman but
substitute 'tango' for 'mambo' as you read them and you will find they are
very much relevant and amusing us as tango dancers. Can dancing turn you
into a Zombie? Why is the search for the perfect shoes so infuriating? And
just what's so special about traveling to a dance festival? (Read this one
if you are thinking about going to one of the big national tango festivals
this year!)

2. Classes in NYC

-Robin and Jennifer's weekly classes in NYC start up again this week for the
July cycle. In July the theme of the month will be "Milonguero Steps" in
the Intermediate (Thurs 7-8PM) and Advanced (Thurs 8-9PM) classes. These
step patterns are straight from the milongas of Buenos Aires and emphasize
rhythm and connection. Empire Dance is located at 127 W. 25th street between
7th + 8th aves. See the full schedule of classes at:
http://www.empiredance.com.
If you've never been to Robin and Jennifer's classes before, print this
email out and try a class for $5.

-Jennifer's Followers Bootcamp class is now an hour earlier, from 7-8 PM on
Monday nights at Empire. Whip yourself into tango shape with exercises for
walking, posture and balance, and lots of drills for the most fashionable
new embellishments... you can come for a single class or take the whole
course.

-'El Abrazo' practica is every Thursday night at Empire Dance from 9-11PM.
DJ'ed by Robin Thomas; $5 (free to ED students)

3. NYC Summer Festival and other travel

-Robin and Jennifer will be teaching at the Annual New York Summer Festival
along with a whole line-up of great NYC-based teachers, including Carolina &
Diego, Antonio Cervila Junior, Rebecca Shulman, Caleb & Ting, Ney Melo and
more. It's only 3 weeks away from July 22-25. Come experience 4 exciting
days of classes for all levels and styles, milongas, the Black & White Ball,
a 10 piece tango orchestra, dancing in Central Park, stellar performances,
Lucille's Quirky East Village Walking Tour, and more! There will be lots of
New Yorkers as well as summer visitors from near and far in attendance. If
you've never danced in the Big Apple, you're in for a real treat! For more
info or to register please go to:
http://www.celebratetango.com/tango_fest/index.html

-Robin and Jennifer also will be teaching at 3 other upcoming national
festivals:

Meet in the Middle Marathon Milonga, Missouri, August 6-9
(http://thelearningdepot.com/murrays-1/tango-festival.htm)

Labor Day Weekend Milonguero Tango Festival, Denver CO, September 1-5, 2004
(http://www.tango.org/lab04.html)

Portland OR TangoFest, October 13-17, 2004
(http://www.claysdancestudio.com/PDXTangoFest2004/)

Traveling to festivals is the best way to make new friends, experience the
flavor of tango in different places, and improve your dance. Don't miss out
on these fun-filled weekends!

Thanks for reading and see you at the milongas!

ASK MALEVA

Is Tango Driving You Mad?? Write to: maleva@...

Dear Maleva,
I have a simple question on tango etiquette.
I dance with a variety of women and I have noticed that some of the women
like to either hum or talk while we are dancing. This puts a damper on my
dancing and enjoyment while I am concentrating on the music and the
surrounding traffic.
What is the best way to make them stop? I don't want to be rude but at the
same time, if this keeps up, I will not want to dance with them again. Other
than those annoyances, I enjoy dancing with them.
I guess this question applies to other distracting behaviour or conditions
such as excess perspiration, unpleasant odors, etc.
Can you help?

Dear Reader,

I guess a simple question deserves a simple answer so I'll try to keep it
short. If a woman does something that you find annoying either don't dance
with her anymore - or if it's someone you are familiar with perhaps you
could ask her to stop. But there really is no polite way to tell someone you
don't like their singing. I am surprised the singing bugs you because many
men I know say they like it when a woman sings or hums, and I personally
like it when a man does so as well. (As long as its not off-key, or even
worse - off beat! I could see how THAT would be very distracting.)

However, talking (aside from a word or comment once in a while) is a tango
faux pas, whether it is a blow-by-blow reaction to the steps you are
leading, or a running commentary on what is going on in the room around you,
or a one-sided discussion on the particular orchestra that is playing,
off-topic from tango altogether. Ladies - No Talking! I find there is a
fairly easy way to deal with the talkers - don't answer back. If they don't
get a verbal reaction then usually they will simmer down. If this doesn't
work, perhaps you could suddenly lead a couple complicated steps to bring
their concentration back to the dancing at hand. Most people would find it
hard to speak in the middle of a dramatic volcada or fast colgada!

As for excess perspiration - absolutely nothing you can do about that.
(Although I don't know many ladies who sweat as much as a man does.)
Unpleasant odors - offer them gum? Dentyne just came out with a berry flavor
they call 'Tango' - but then you may have to deal with her chewing and
smacking in your ear...

Ciego", one of the classic numbers from the show) as well as an Adobe Attachment
regarding the show’s run at the Shubert Theater on Broadway.

Previews start July 20th and opening night is July 24th with an 6 week

We’ll keep you informed with more details.

Love, Lynn

Natalia Hills was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She debuted in Buenos Aires
as a professional dancer at the age of 12 in the Lola Membrives Theater's
presentation of Tango-Tango.

As a teenager, she studied with Miguel Balmaceda, Antonio Todaro and Pepito
Avellaneda. Her young career included roles as dancer as well as choreographer
in various national and international productions including Re-volver, El
Fantasma del Rio de la Plata.

In March 1995, she debuted in Luis Bravo’s Forever Tango in San Francisco and
was an original member of their very successful London production that summer at
Covent Garden as well as two years later on Broadway at the Walther Kerr and
Marquis Theater. That same year she was specially invited to perform in honor of
Princess Diana Spenser at the British Embassy’s event in Argentina.

In the summer 1998, she appeared in the long-running PBS series An Evening at
the Pops with the Boston Pops Orchestra.

During her association with Forever Tango in the period 1995-2001, she performed
in the most important cities of North America, Asia and Europe as well as
Forever Tango's first and only Argentine presentation, which was held at the
prestigious Theater Colon of Buenos Aires.

Born in Mendoza, Argentina, Francisco Forquera began his study of the dance as a
teenager. Under the direction of Hector Zaraspe, he studied diverse techniques
of dance, art and movement in New York, Spain and Buenos Aires.

His first performance at Lincoln Center was in Tango y Tango. During a seven
year residence in New York, Francisco participated in several Off- Broadway
shows and other theatrical appearances including Buenos Aires Celebration Month
at the World Financial Center, Kuarahy with Julio Bocca and the Ballet
Argentino, Paramount of the Arts in Peekskill, New York and Tango Fantástico at
the Bellayre Music Festival in Rockefeller Center during its 1998 concerts
series. He also appeared in the film Random Hearts with Harrison Ford. In
August, 2001, he was played a principal role in the new musical ‘Camila’ at the
Walnut Street Theater of Philadelphia.

Francisco and Natalia made their debut as a couple with Forever Tango in August
2001 at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida.

Their performances with Forever Tango 2003 have been seen world-wide, including
television appearances with NBC.

In 2002 and 2003 they took part in the production of Las Vegas Tango at the
Riviera Resort Hotel, La Dexiéme Biennale de la Danse in Lyon- France and were
featured by special invitation at the International Tango Festival of Toulouse.

In the summer of 2003 they were featured at the Hollywood Bowl as principal
dancers in The Passion of Tango, a series of concerts with the Los Angeles
Philharmonic conducted by Miguel Harth -Bedoya, under the direction and
choreography of Hector Zaraspe.

TANGO JUEVES HAS A NEW STARTING TIME AND SOME SPECIAL GUESTS

Jueves, the regular Thursday night milonga at the Dulaine Dance Center, is now
starting one-half hour earlier, at 9:00pm instead of 9:30pm. Our schedule will
now be as follows: 9:00-9:30pm-warm-up; 9:30-10:00pm-intermediate/advanced
lesson; 10:00pm-1:00am-dancing. We are still serving the same delicious
appetizers and refreshments, and our dance floor is still one of the best in
town.

This Thursday, July 15th, we will be welcoming two special guests from
Argentina, Ricardo El Pibe Sarandi and Elina Roldan, for a special exhibition
performance.

Ricardo El Pibe Sarandi was born in 1942 and didn't dance his first tango until
he was 13 years old. In those days there were no teachers or schools of tango,
and dancers learned from each other. Today, at age 62, he is teaching his own
inimitable style to students throughout the world.

Elina's dance roots are in classical Spanish dance, flamenco and modern dance.
She has studied tango with teachers such as Gustavo Naveira, Pepito Avellaneda,
Pupy Castello, Graciela Gonzalez, and has appeared in stage, television, and
film productions. Elina has been teaching since 1989 in Buenos Aires and
throughout the world.

Ricardo's smooth milonguero style and Elina's magical feet are a joy to watch!
Together they are unforgettable.

Date: July 15, 2004

Time: 9:00-9:30pm-warm-up; 9:30-10:00pm-intermediate/advanced lesson;
10:00pm-1:00am-dancing. The performance will be around 11:00pm.

Place: Dulaine Dance Center, 25 West 31st Street (between Broadway and Fifth
Ave.), 4th floor, New York, NY 10001, 212 244-8400.

Admission: $10.00

Ricardo and Elina will also be presenting three workshops in milonguero style
milonga and tango on Sunday, July 18th. For further information, please e-mail
