"I need to get the rations squared away this week so that I can get them
ordered."

Hey, Tom Craig, just in case you're contemplating an issue of green
(unroasted) coffe beans, I know where they can be had for $2.99 per pound.
It's in the South End of Boston. Let me know if you're interested.

Gentlemen,
As you all know, Borderlands is right around the corner.  I will be sending out some detailed info in the next several days as we get closer.  Todd and I intend to let everone know the rank structure buy the end of the week.
What I need from all units is a roster of their guys that are participating.  I have a roster from the following units: 6th NH, Slocum's Avengers, Green Mountain Mess.  If you are an independent and are registered on your own, get in touch with me also.

Rations:  I have closed the orders for rations.  We have close to half the guys signed up participating in the ration issue which should be a great part of the event.  If you wanted in but didn't get in touch with me yet, email me ASAP
If you are taking part in the ration issue be sure to bring something to wrap up your bacon and some poke bags for your coffee.  Everything else ought to fit in your haversack.

General info:  Please take a look at the guard files on the Yahoo site.  Everyone in the company will participate in the guard mounting...Cpls will need to know their duties!

Remember that we WILL NOT have a fixed camp.  We will camp Friday night in one place, and Saturday in a totally different location.  Bring only what you can carry.  If you can't carry it you'll have to leave it behind in an unsecured location.

I will post the company structure and the detailed instructions as the week goes on.  If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact me!
   Take care,
     Tom

Tom,
What's up dogg? I was gonna make it to Templeton on Saturday but decided
otherwise given the weather situation. I figured out why i haven't been
getting your emails. When you changed emails your new email address did not
get transfered to my secure people list, so you were nothing but junk
email... sorry Tom. I also dropped my cell phone in the toilet about a
month ago and am yet to get a new one, long story. Things have been extra
crazy around here and I've been extra broke not being able to take weekends
off like I used to. I am, however, definitely going to Borderlands. I work
unitl 9:30pm on Friday and I plan on heading toward Easton right after work.
I'll attempt to find you guys, but if I don't I'll bivouac somewhere and
meet up with you Sat. morning. I'm sure I'll talk to before then.

Lads,
As Borderlands gets closer, I just want to remind you to look over
the files on guard mount. We will be running an all night picket
(roughly 9 pm - 6am). I will most likely divide the company into two
platoons for this duty. This means nco's and officers will be working
their asses off (especially if you have to supervise Andy Metheny's
platoon) As a veteran of these details, I personally think it makes
more sense to run two 4+/- hour guard mounts rather than 2 hour
mounts. The reason is simple: with 4 hour mounts, you guys can at
least get some sleep when not on duty. If you are awoken every two
hours, you'll be a mess in the morning. Honestly, even when the event
sucks, a good guard scenario can be a hell of a lot of fun. We guarded
the Cornfield at the last big Antietam event with the Potomac Legion.
The battles were kind of sucky, but our guys kept talking about how
cool it was to reenact this very neglected aspect of soldier's life.

Hi Tyler!
As this is our first outing, I am not going to be over the top
about early/mid/late war designations. Personally, I don't think that
you can go wrong by shooting for 1863.

Apparently Saturday is supposed to be March 1865 outside Petersburg (Ft. Stedman) and Sunday is to be Appomattox.  So, I guess for first person interaction, we should treat it as the last few weeks of the war in mid-Southern Virginia.  I guess that would make the 21st century "spectators" secesh, for interaction purposes.

I certainly don't run the show here, but since the event has an overall "scenario" (as loosely as it may be followed by everyone) It's my suggestion that we ought to try to work hand in hand and conduct ourselves consistently with it.

If there is enough interest, maybe next season we can plan a more specific scenario with an identified regimental designation. Since this is experimenatl for now, let's keep our fingers crossed.

I'm looking forward to meeting everyone at Borderlands/Fort Stedman/Appomatox.  It will be nice to work with a company sized group of like-minded reenactors without having to drive 10 hours.

Tyler and Co,
The event is definitely 1865.  If you go to the event plan in the yahoo group you will see that our "guiding impression" is to be the 29th Mass in the Appomattox campaign.  I didn't make any noise about 1st person etc or being super specfic to the unit portrayed due to the nature of the event and the novelty of our efforts.

More info:

- we will be portraying a generic infantry company in the Army of the
Potomac. If you have forage caps without insignia, that would be the
way to go. As we are not potraying the 357th Wisconsin Deer

As Tom mentioned, the 29th Mass is our guiding principle, but for those
who don't know them they were a bunch of wasp's who were put into the
Irish Brigade at the beginning of the war. They were in the Army of
the Potomac, so you have a good idea of their dress. They were not

Lads,
I know that rank structure is the big remaining question. I will be
upfront and say that Tom and I have been thrown a curveball in the past
few days, and our numbers may have shrunk from 50 to 35, but 35 is an
AMAZING number for a first time out as a group. After much
deliberation and consultation with Kautz, et al, if our numbers remain
at or around 35, the rank structure will be as follows:

Capt. Todd Bryda, 28th Mass
1st Lt. Walter Sy, 6th NH
2nd Lt. Scott Sleeper, 6th NH
1st Sgt. Tom Craig, 1st Mass Cav
2nd Sgt. Tom Bierly, 28th Mass

If the numbers fluctuate down, Scott has graciously agreed to become
2nd Sgt., but we'll wait and see. Except for our recent surprise, our
numbers only seem to be increasing. As the guys who tend to share our
philosophy rarely get the Thursday night flu, I don't really expect to
lose many men.

As stated previously, we will be using platoons for guard mounts, and
I've already worked out a basic idea of how we will deploy, so officers
and nco's need to be sharp on the procedure.

When it comes to corporals, I would like to hold off for another day or
so and see if we get any more bodies. My philosophy about corporals is
that I would rather see them show up as privates and then reveive a
brevet for the weekend. As soon as Tom and I get final rosters, I'll
let you know.

Please write with questions!

YHS,
Todd

Yes they were not Irish but they served with distinction in the Irish Brigade. In my readings it seems the wasp 29th and the rest of the Irish Brigade Regiments got along very well. At Antietam the 29th was on the left flank of the Brigade and helped the 69th out of a terrible jam at Sunken Road with their long range “new” Enfield Rifles. The 69th and the other regiments were using buck and ball and had to get a lot closer to be effective. Here were the orders for the 29th to join the Irish Brigade:

Headquarters Richardson’s Division,}

Camp at Fair Oaks, Va., June 9, 1862}

[Special Order]

The Twenty-ninth Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers is hereby

assigned to the brigade of General Meagher,

By command of

                                    BRIGADIER-GENERAL RICHARDSON,

John M. Norvell, A.A.G.

And a comment by Davis Conyngham(Staff Officer Irish Brigade)  p.p. 171-172 The Irish Brigade and Its Campaigns

“ this was a very fine regiment, and did good service in connection with the Brigade, participating in all trials, privations and glories of the Irish Brigade, while in connection with it.”

I for one will be proud to represent the 29th. BTW I had a civil war moment while retyping this order look at the date!

Guys,
As Todd mentioned it is certainly time to get loose ends squared away for Borderlands.  We certainly have the makings of a first rate event, right here in our own back yard.  The following are some last minute reminders.

Rations:  Those getting rations from the issue would be advised to bring some brown paper, poke sacks etc to carry your stuff in.  The bacon will be issued cold, but it is smoked, and it can be kept very safely either cooked or uncooked in your haversack for the duration of the event.  There will also be loose coffee issued, so be prepared for that.  There will be NO sugar issue.
Rations will be distributed between 6-7:30 depending on when the bulk of people arrive on site.

Camping: It ought to go without saying, but make sure that you are prepared to travel light.  We will not be in the same place Saturday that we were Friday.  If you can't carry it, don't bring it!
Friday night we will be encamped in the narrow woods that separate the upper (mansion) field from the lower field where the Union camp will be.  We will post a sentry at some point to guide in late arrivals.

Ammunition: There will be a tactical each day, in addition to the spectator battle.  Come prepared to participate in both.

Impression:  PLEASE go to the Yahoo group and read the event plan.  It has more than enough info in it to answer questions.  We are shooting for generic end of the war Federal infantry.  Sack coats and forage caps are the suit of the day, and plain is better than fancy.  The standards that we have set are obtainable by everyone with a little effort, and they WILL BE ENFORCED!

General:  Again, go to the Yahoo group and brush up on the guard procedure.  We will be using it, and you do need to have at least a passing familiarity with how it works.  We will of course have Cpls on hand to lead you in the right direction!
This is a unique opportunity for New England, and as such there are certain to be some unique challenges.  I ask you all to come with an open mind and a willing spirit.  We may do some things that are foriegn to you and there may be times when you will be uncomfortable (late night picket comes to mind).  Let's all work together to put on the most accurate impression that we can, and have a great time doing it!
I look forward to seeing you at Borderlands!

Capt. Todd Bryda, 28th Mass

2nd Lt. Scott Sleeper, 6th NH
1st Sgt. Tom Craig, 1st Mass Cav
2nd Sgt. Tom Bierly, 28th Mass

Corps. PETER CHAPMAN and CPL MATTY CRONIN (6th NH); Mark DeAngelis and

Also, even if you didn't buy rations, please prepare to give 2.00 each

The weather is looking FINE!!

I was searching the web for a letter or something interesting from
March or April 1865 in and around Petersburg to help set the mood
for the weekend. I didn't find anything that grabbed me. But I did
find this letter from Lt. John V. Hadley of the 7th Indiana. He
tells an anecdote about an experience while detached on picket
duty. It could make for an interesting first person "reminiscence"
among lads shooting the breeze. As always, the letters manifest the
humanity of it all. I hope you enjoy it.

Army of the Potomac
Pratts Point Va. Ap[ril], 26, 63

Miss Mary J Hill
Pittsboro Ind.

My dear girl
I haven't received your letter this week. Am sadly disappointed. Yet
it may come this evening, I think it will. At leas I hope it will.
Oh it is so hot to day. We have just returned to Quarters from
General Inspection. We'v' been out since 9 o'clock this morning. Tis
now 1 P.M. Sweating and swearing was the order of the forenoon.
Stood in column for three hours wigh knapsacks. Who wouldn't swear?
Who wouldn't sweat under the scorching rays of this days sun? But
tis over now & who cares? Only dread the next one.

Havn't any news fro you to day. Will go back a few days when I was
Last on picket. Tell you of a little incident or two. It so happened
that I had command of out Company on that time. Luke couldn't go
out. "Had business" in Camp. My services were not needed as Adjutant
on the Picket line & from request took out the Co. A mile of the
line fell into my charge. On my territory there lived an old man
with immense wealth & a small family. He had considerable personal
property yet left. Was once well fixed to live. Had many out houses,
cribs, graineries, sheds, &c, and 30 or 40 Negroes. The old man was
radically Secesh. Had one son at home Discharged from Stewarts
[Major General J. E. B. Stuart's] rebel Cavelry & two more still in
the Southern ranks. Well it so happened that on the night that we
took command of his house that 12 of his most valueable Negores,
hitched up a yoke of fine oxen to the only cart the old man had left—
put in their little Domestics & Drove over to the Provost Marshel of
our Corps. Of course they got transportation to Washington and their
team turned over to the Quartermaster's Department.

On arriving on the line the day previous it was my duty to take a
man & relieve one that was posted at the old man's house as a safe
guard. I detailed John Ridgeway of Brownsburg as good looking and
fine a man as is in the Camp. Was escorted over by the relieved
Lieut—introduced to the family—highly recommended [and] received
kindly. And evry thing promised me rustic enjoyment (for by the way
there was a young daughter, 20 years old, who smiled and courtecied
when my friend Lieut Smith 34 N. Y. remarked "that you will find
good protection in the hands of my young friend Hadley["].) Sat 10
minutes with the family. Promised to call frequently. Went to my
post—spent the night as usual in the rain.

Still rained hard in the morning. Concluded to go over to Bullards
and stay while it rained so hard. Says I "Dave hurry & prepare our
coffee for I must go over & see how Ridgeway gets along". Coffee
soon ready—drank it, filled my pipe—started. Arrived at the house—
darted in out of the pelting rain with a light heart. Felt that I
had shelter for the day. No body in the room but Ridgeway. He arose
laughing & remarked "Hadley there is Hell here this morning. The old
man's negroes ran away last night—took his oxen & cart. They accuse
us of causing it—mad—furious". Just here we heard a low rumbling
noise in some other apartment which sounded much like the frightful
noise of a hundred horse in a desperate charge. As it neared us,
however, we found that it proceded only from, chairs, churns,
tables, stools, &c flying before the approach of four infuriated
demons. Father, mother, sister, brother, came dashing headlong into
the room with faces red & fiery as a boiled lobster and tongues
making a worse jargon than was heard at the tower of Babel. Louder
and more threatening than was made by the two Devils among the
tombs. Ridgeway sceized his faithful musket, & prepared for the
conflict. My sword was snatched from its sheath for I thought there
would be sharp work for it to do. And both standing at a guard we
prepared for the conflict.

Soon discovered that words would be the only arms used. Met them
best we could. Scene closed by me ordering the guard to camp. They
now be came suppliant. Said they would take back all that was said &
feel sorry for it. Begged Ridgeway to stay & me to let him. But I
wasn't "letten" like I was. Ridgeway wasn't "stayen" like he was.
Could tell you what they said but wont here. Want something to tell
you when again sit by your side.

Hadn't been half an hour from the house when I saw the boys charging
on his out houses. It was raining. They didn't leave a board on top
or side. Also carried off all his garden fence for fire. I didn't
care—glad to see it. Went over to [Brigadier] Gen. [James S.]
Wadsworth and reported to me. Expected to be Court Martialed for
taking the Guarg [Guard] off without proper authority. I sent a
statement of the facts to the Gen. Guess they were satisfactory.
Grand Officer of the Pickets endorsed my actions. [Brigadier] Gen
[Lysander] Cutler said I did right. Don't care—wouldn't guard such a
man if [Major] Gen [Joseph] Hooker would give me positive orders.

Mary what would you say if I were to accept with an Adjutantcy of a
Negro Regt? I am still Acting Adjutant of our Regt. Must close—Happy
Dreames to night, I salute you.

J. Vestal

It looks like the good Lt. Hadley never took the position in the
Negro regiment. But, he was captured in May '64 during the
Wilderness and spent seven months in a rebel prison.

I'm looking forward to seeing you all this weekend.

Guys,
I just wanted to send out one last update.  Things have all come together in fine style and we are more than ready to go for the weekend.
I will be on site between 1-2 PM tomorrow, and Todd should be there soon after.  Our Friday night campsite with be in the strip of woods that divides the Union and Confederate areas.  Once you get on site check in with me and we'll get you squared away with a cozy, rock infested place to sleep.
Ration issue will be at some point between 6-7:30 PM.  If you arrive after that we will certainly save your portion so don't fret.  Don't forget to bring some bags etc to wrap up your rations in.
If you have any last minute questions concerns etc, please get in touch.  Otherwise I look forward to seeing you tomorrow for what promises to be an excellent weekend!
    Take care,

I just wanted to thank you guys for one of the best weekends that I
have ever had at a New England event or at a reenacting event in
general. I've been reenacting for nearly 15 years, and I never saw a
better group of guys thrown together into a tough situation and come
out so well. Your skills and openess to new experiences was an
amazing thing to watch. I'll just never be able to look at a horse
the same way again....or think of Brazil....or wander around the
woods without looking for fat, bald rebs with high voices. :)

YHS,
Capt. Todd Bryda

P.S. If anybody is interested in attending Genessee with the 28th
Mass, Co. K, it is sort of by invitation only and the deadline is
soon
(Absolutely NO walk-ons). Check the site out (www.gcv.org) and get
back to me asap.

Gentlemen,
The Second Rhode Island, Co. K and Slocums will be sponsoring an
event
on May 5-7, 2006 at the New Bedford Gun Club in Dartmouth Mass. As
well as tactical skirmishes, the event will attempt to recreate the
events of May 5, 1864 when the Second Rhode Island faced the 23rd
North Carolina in the Wilderness, and sustained sixty percent
casualties. This is a campaigner event, and registration will be
limited to 60 rank and file per side, minus officers, and staff. The
site is located on 300 acres in Dartmouth, Massachusetts and
resembles
the area where these two units fought. This will be a non-spectator
event as well. We would be interested in hearing what is the opinion
of the event. Those pards knowing Rebs, are kindly asked to forward
this on to them, as attracting the Union forces will not be
difficult,
but Rebs will be.
Yours,

Guys,

I wanted to second what Todd said, and to thank you all personally for your participation.  The weekend went even better than we planned, and I can honestly say was an awesome time.  Great experience, great comrades, great fun.  I was really impressed with the way that everyone stepped up and did his share.  Guard mount was taxing, but no one grumbled about the lack of sleep or the meager rations.  Heck every sentry challenge I heard was right on the money...Halt!  Who goes there?!

I am in the process of putting together an AAR of the whole deal that I will post hear.  As I said on Sunday I would like to hear any and all comments that folks have, good or bad.  Going forward we can build on what we did and learned to make the next time even better.

As I also said on Sunday, there are other events that have campaigner potential in this season, and there will be others on the horizon for next season.  Now that Borderlands is in the history books and worked well we can start planning other stuff.  For those with Confederate kit, there is an open invitation to come to Liberty and work on the earthworks.  We (Todd and I) are in the fetal stage of planning for Ryegate, and there is the 6th NH tactical in September.  If you know of other stuff out there put it out and spread the word.

Thanks again for all your efforts!

Rob,
The concept has potential and the date is reasonable (both important ingrediants).  Do you propose to have tight uniform standards or will this gig be open to folks who can go as a campaigner regardless of kit?

Tom et all,

Just an update on the Marlboro VT event Sept. 23-25th

I believe what we are going to do is stage the Union and Confederate troops from different locations. The landowner was telling me that there are a few different area's to access the property and I think this would be a better plan as neither side would know the strength of each other's forces.

In addition, the direction I am leaning at this point is to not script any set meeting of the groups but rather give both commanders objectives and see if the Armies clash. Sort of a happenstance occurance.

I believe this may add a bit more realism to the event and would be sure to keep the pickets on alarm thru the night.

With the property being as large as it is there are many possibilities. Eric and I plan to have a couple of work days real soon. May be looking at the 3rd weekend in July.

Admittedly, I have yet to secure an adaquate CS commander but the numbers of the rank and file are growing quite nicely.

I was thinking that perhaps having those that have distance could come Friday after work or whatever set up a tent modern or otherwise, camp the night and get a good start at it in the A.M.

After putting in a decent day Sat. guys could pack up and head home to be home for Sunday with the family, mow the grass etc.

I need to get my arse in gear and get those pre-reg forms out to start to put together some hard numbers.

I too had a good time this weekend at Borderlands. I was not among you but was one of the small CS noises 3 of you heard in the wood line Sat eve. as the second relief of the guard passed.

We were surprised to see how many of you went out and decided that a 4:1 ratio were not good odds, so thought we'd let you you'ins pass on by and live to fight another day. : )

You guys looked really great! Bully for you....

More to come soon.

All,
Our event is open to those with moderateley good kit, ie Jarnagin quality, but
the heart has to be into this one, as it will be both physically, and mentally
rigorous. Co. K itself is half mainstream/half campaigner but they are lending
us the site, so we have to go by them. Campaigners with top kit are preffered,
but we are looking for both numbers, and quality at this one.

I also wanted to thank all of you in the federal company for the great
weekend we had. It was the best event I've been to in New England. It
was good ground, good weather and good pards and I was home in 45 min!
I've become very excited about events in good old NE and I believe
this is the start of something pretty good we should not let it die.

Also wanted to especially thank the 4 young confederate campaigners
that harrassed our picket lines all night. What a great job! They get
a special vote of thanks. It took us until 4:30am to capture them.
Their efforts, kits and impression were first rate. Also tell the
Mexican I loved his boost to my coffee. May be next time he'll take
the oath.

Also kudos to the Goodrichs they had the longest drive 5 hrs from
northern VT (I leaned how to cook corn meal from them).

So until next time,

Hi all,

I've been wanting to write something in regards to the Borderlands event but haven't had much time, I was having some troubles at work.

First of all I wanted to thank all my Confederate pards who went out that night.  We did very well for our first time together.  Next time we'll do better and won't be caught.

Second of all, I'd like to thank the Federals for letting us come out and challenge their picket line.  Even though arriving on the scene with a plan of what to do, the terrain occupied by you changed my whole outlook and we had to develop a plan in which we could cause some trouble but not alert you to our position.  I thought the natural depression we were camped in could have hid our small fire but unfortuately it didnt.  This weekend was the first time I actually felt like a real soldier.  The fear in you guys being so close and us being able to hear you guys change the guard and call the corporal of the guard was a really cool experience.  I actually for most of the night that I was up, I was afraid that you guys would jump out of the woods and get us.  Next time you guys won't be so lucky in capturing us.  Again I'd like to thank Todd and Tom and all you Yanks for letting us come out and join you guys on the outpost.  I hope we can all go out and do this again real soon.

Yours very respectfully,

Matthew Reardon

2nd Lt.

3rd N. Carolina State Troops

Cmmnding the Late Detachment

P.S. I'll also be writing an AAR to come out sometime in the near future.
