Rob,

Tom Gingras and I have been talking with some folks at OSV about doing a LH there.  As you know, the site is awesome and has so many possibilities.  We were talking about doing a recruiting scenario at a New England village circa 1864.  It would be something quite different, with most of the participants in civilian attire, and a few offficers and soldiers detailed as the recruiting party.  Politicians making patriotic speeches, etc. would make it a really great event.  Of course OSV makes it's money by being open to the public so it would by no means be an immersion event.

With that said, the response by OSV has been lukewarm at best.  In the recent past they have done military timeline LHs, with no real authenticity standards.  They don't appear to be staging any of those, and have fallen back to New England militia circa 1840 for their military demonstrations.  They have said they would be interested in a CW period LH at some point in the future.

If anyone out there has better contacts at OSV maybe they could generate a bit more interest than Tom and I have to date.  I'm going to try again soon and see if OSV may want to set up something for late summer, if it can be deconflicted with already planned events.

We'd love to host a quality LH up here in New England that would draw some of the guys from south of the border.  I'll post this on the CR website also, if nothing else than to poll interest in a future recruiting LH up here.

Tom, if you are not already somewhere in the Hindu Kush, you can chime in.  Your contact at OSV was better than the one I communicated with.

But to answer your immediate question, no I was not planning to attend the militia day, however I'm going to look into it now and see if it's a possibility.

I see some chatter about events and thought I'd throw some into the mix for consideration. Here are some that may be worth considering and/or ones that I'm going to in case anyone wants to carpool:

June 12-14
"Day of Days" WWII tactical event, Stonington, CT
Not Civil War but... The battle will take place on about a 200 acre site with a road network and varied terrain. Don't know much about this event but it's close and some guys from the Odessa gang that I fall in with may be going! Anyone know more or definitely going, let me know.
June 27-28
RI National Guard Air Show http://www.riairshow.org/index.html
NOT a reenactment so don't come dress up in funny-looking wool clothes but it's an awesome display of American (and Canadian) might. The USN Blue Angels will be here as well as the Canadian Snowbirds. The best of the best. Come hear the sound of freedom! One of the best air shows in the country. I went last year right after I got back from airborne school at Ft. Benning and had fun walking through the C-130 on display and talking to the crew about how I've taken off in one of these planes 5 times but never landed in one!

July 17-19
Genesee Country Village, Mumford, NY (near Rochester, NY)
Finally, a Civil War one! I'll be going for sure. The deadline for registering is in mid-June and needs to be sent to my unit's POC in the ways of registration yesteryear (if you don't mind falling in with us, of course). It's a great site (www.gcv.org) and a good group of guys. It's decidedly mainstream but a fun, no stress event in great surroundings. Anyone is more than welcome to hitch a ride with me if interested.

Aug 14-16
A New England Brigade event in Woodbury, CT
I wouldn't mind going to this one if we can muster up a group and coordinate with the organizers.

Sept. 11-13
This is the same weekend as the big WWII event in Odessa, NY and my National Guard drill weekend. If I can make up the drill weekend, I'll be at Odessa but thought I'd mention it since it's less than 5 miles from my house and abuts my golf club (fore!).

Oct. 16-18
Cedar Creek 145th Anniversary, Middletown, VA http://www.cedarcreekbattlefield.org/
Always a fun event, also decidedly mainstream. Just ignore the power plant across the street. It's usually got the numbers and plenty of vendors (funnel cake!). I'm running a marathon for the first time in my fat life in D.C. the next weekend so I'm not sure if I can squeeze this one in but haven't done it in a while. My "other" unit goes to this one so I'll have a place to fall in. I'll give a shout out closer to the date to see if anyone is up for it.

Nov. 13-15
Bummers Event, Molena, GA http://www.bummers09.com/
Holy hardcore, Batman! Now that's more like it. Barring unforseen circumstances I'll be falling with Barfin' Bill Backus and others. Should be a good one.

Give me a shout if you are going, might go, etc., to one, some or all of these...

Hooah!

I know the OSV CEO very well from my nonprofit work here in RI but haven't talked to him in a couple of years since he took the position. Perhaps we can talk to see who you've spoken with thus far and I'll see if I can get a hold of him.

That would help a lot. As you are aware, it's all about "who you know", and it doesn't get much better than the CEO.  The guy I communicated with was the events coordinator.  That was about over a year ago.  Tom Gingras had a better contact, but I don't have his name.  We will have to get with Tom on that.

Any help would be appreciated. I would recommend that we get our concept fleshed out a bit more with some harder info, then maybe we can have a sit down with your contact and make our pitch, stressing what we can offer to OSV as a LH exhibit.  I think we can pull it off with at least 20 participants, limiting participation to the CPH side will help us with quality control.

Tom, do you have the name of the POC you talked with?

Folks,

Rob & Mike's mention of warm weather events brings to mind a few of our own events. Some of these efforts are atop other events, which is normal, but don't be shy about asking to attend something or another, if you have the urge to head down this way.

12-14 June 2009
Hoosiers at Gettysburg!
Hosted by the Co. K, 13th NJVI/Stockton Guards
Primary Event

Co. K, 27th Indiana at Spangler's Spring is the theme of this Gettysburg NPS Living History. The usual camp life, firing and skirmishing demos apply, and at least half of the participants are either locals or motel militia, so don't feel shy about bringing the wife and kids down for a weekend of antiquing or laying out by the pool in Da Burg. Some of the felllows is the 5th NHV have mentioned a drive down for this one, and that usually means a vanpool. Registration cutoff is 29 May 2009, and if you are interested, shoot Joey Bordonaro an email beatlefans1  @  verizon.net for more information. The event listserver for participants and curious onlookers has the registration form in the files section, and is located here:

Generally, this living history programs also include a brief march, and the stroll this time around is on Culp's Hill. No one will be asking you to jump from a perfectly good airplane, and this is one of the two living history sites on the actual battlefield that still has substantial shade. As Robert E. Lee once said, "We spent three days near Gettysburg, yet still could not see and do it all."

17-19 July 2009
Celebrating Lincoln's 200th!
Hosted by the Living History Guild

Company F, 151st NYVI (sounds familiar, huh?) is the impression for another trip to Genesee Country Village in Mumford, NY, which is about 45 minutes from Rochester, NY. The museum itself is worth a visit, especially if you recall it being Dr. Robert Becker of Cornell University's heirloom fruit and vegetable lab back in the 1980s. The building collection is second only to Greenfield Village in Dearborn, MI.  This is the CRs return to Mumford for the first time in about 5 years; our first official trip in blue, and we are falling in with Doug Oakes and the Living History Guild to form a small, but fun, company of skirkers, skulkers, beats, and other poor excuses for soldiers....as usual.  Mumford, as an event, is as mainstream as it gets, but they have a decent ration issue, and a limited amount of free beer Saturday night (at least they used to), plus Mike Lavis claims the battlefield will be in a remote, undisclosed, fresh location this year.  For more information, send Doug "I would go anywhere for free beer" Oakes an email oldsoldier51  @  yahoo.com  Mumford still uses the old bulk registration system, so it's a matter of sending a few bucks to Doug, and completing a waiver. I don't see a deadline for this year (it's normally early June), but don't procrastinate forever.

31 July - 2 August 2009
Texans at Gettysburg!
Hosted by the Co. K, 13th NJVI/Stockton Guards

We'll represent Co. D, 1st Texas Infantry this weekend; camp in Pitzer's Woods; do the usual demos for the public, and then have a leisurely stroll up a big hill following the route of the 1st Texas as they visited the Slyder Farm (good article in Hallowed Ground magazine this month), hopped across a pair of Plum Run branches, eased by the Timber Farm (foundations still visible), slogged through the Triangular Field, and then descended into the Wheatfield. The march will be warm, but educational. Registration is open. The form is on the event listserver, which is here:

11-13 September 2009
Fortress Monroe
Hosted by the Co. D, 1st Minnesota

The impression is Co. A, 3rd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery. This event will be a bit different since it will be held on an active military base. However much of the original 19th century fabric of the Fort remains and there are a number of excellent locations for period activities. Included during the weekend will be both infantry and artillery drill, as well as a pay call and period mail delivery. POC is James Owens at JDO@...  and this effort has a website:  http://1stminnd.org/fortmonroe/

2-4 October 2009
Death March XI: Corduroy!
Hosted by the Living History Guild
Primary Event

The impressions are rural Virginia civilians (need a bunch of them), and a company each from the 5th NCST, and 70th New York.  The main function of this event is for the federals to construct an actual, functional, corduroy road section using period methods. Unlike some events, the road will stay in place, and be used after the events. The civilians have several structures that can be used for housing, and the confederates will delay slightly but not stop construction of the corduroy road.  This listserver has info from mulitple renditions of the Death March series of events, but is just now getting warmed up for the 2009 effort: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Elmira_Death_March/

Other than a few events later in the year, that pretty much fills the bill for 2009. This coming weekend some of us are off on a fun romp with the 1864 Overland Campaign in Virginia. Up closer to the New Englanders is the 5th NHV, and they have a lot of smaller, local, efforts that may be convenient, yet maybe off the radar:

4 July 2009 - Independence Day Parade, Amherst , NH

11 July 2009 - Old Home Day, Newbury , NH

31 July – 2 August 2009 – Strawberry Banke LH, Portsmouth , NH

TBA September 2009 – New Castle LH,  New Castle , NH

 2-4 October 2009 – Musterfield, Sutton , NH

Rob Grandchamp can probably fill you guys in on any current/further details for the 5th NHV, as this list dates from November 2008 timeframe. The 5th NHV are great folks, do a combination of local NE events, and tend to make a van trip once or twice a year down this way.

There are two events around the 4th of July. On June 27 and 28 is the battle of
Monmouth. In past years this has been a great event, but this year I don't
believe it's a big three event "Continental Line, Brittish Brigade, BAR" so I
don't know how big it will be. On July 11-12 is the Battle of Hubardton. This
may be the last year that the event takes place, because the organization that
ownes the battle field can no longer afford the upkeep, and may have to sell it.
It's a great event to campaign it, and some of the best of the best Continental
and Brittish units will be there. This event is hosted by the LHA.
I hope this helps and if you have any questions feel free to shoot me a line.

Guys,

I have not seen any posts here so far, so in case you haven't gotten the news, it is with great sadness that I must report to you the passing of Charles Heath.

Charles was a giant in this hobby, and gave sage advice on reenacting and life to many of us.

All I know right now is that Charles suffered a heart attack on the morning of May 24.

You will be missed Charles, rest in peace.

Charles was something else. If you were "in", you were really in. If you were out, watch out. He could be downright cruel at times. I've been the beneficiary of his largesse and the object of his scorn. As the Rev. Mike "Mighty Roger" Petersen wrote about Charles, "I never experienced Charles' dark side directly, but he was a paradoxical man to be sure. Complex, flawed, gifted - very human." Very true.

I'll never forget the terrific Rich Mountain event. I was the Columbia Rifles' company first sergeant, my first time at this very demanding position. Charles was banned from the event by the event organizers after pissing them off for one reason or another. But on Friday night at the first roll call, there he was, reporting for duty, having snuck in somehow. The company commander and I just looked at each other and shrugged. It wasn't my event so I just carried on and stayed in my lane. Even though this was around the time that things were getting ugly between me and him regarding the CR board he never caused me an ounce of trouble at the gig. It was like there was a respite from the unpleasantness. Things got worse after that of course but I did appreciate the fact that he respected the position I was in and played soldier for the weekend.
Time seemed to be healing those wounds so I'm a little sad that we couldn't make a final peace. (If such a thing was possible with hime.) Anyway, I've met a lot of really smart people in my life but few could hold a candle to Charles. Talk about some intellectual horsepower. He was nothing short of brilliant. May he rest in peace.

Thanks for informing me about Charles Heath.

I barely knew him. Back in the late ‘90s I met him on the AOL Civil War chatroom. We had some heated debates and one that comes to mind was about weight. I mentioned that most reenactors are too fat. My side was that any soldier slightly heavy at the war’s start would trim down after marching a few hundred miles. He stated that there were fat people then, such as Butler, Halleck, etc. I pointed out they were officers and didn’t march. But as Douglas MacArthur said, “if we’re thinking alike, then some of us aren’t thinking.”

I think it was the summer of 2001, I finally met him in person at the Harrisburg museum as we were among a group doing a living history. I saw him again in September 2003 for the Antietam event (145th) as he was caring for a horse we spoke briefly.

Though I only came out to the Norlands event Friday night and Saturday, it was good to see some old friends and meet some new ones.  It was good to meet you Tom and the rest of the 3rd Ark and chat with Bob on our common sewing passion.

The event was mainstream, but the land and facility was a great setting.  Saturday mornings tactical was a great experience to checkout the woods that make up some of the 400 acres.  It sounds like this may be an annual event for Norlands to raise funds.  Maybe next year a campaign adjunct can be put together.

Hey all,

Last call for the decidedly mainstream but fun event at Genessee Village in Mumford, NY. Genessee Village is similar to OSV and is a wonderful site for a reenactment. The Columbia Rifles is putting a company together for the event. We've gone to it as Confed in the past but are doing it Yankee-style this time around.

Here's some info if you'd like to join us (from one of the class acts in the hobby, Doug Oakes, the CR putting this together for us):

"Just to let all of you know that the cut off date for getting your registration info to me is July 1st. Just send me a check for $10.00 made out to Douglas A. Oakes and I will place you on the registration form. My mailing address is;

Douglas A. Oakes
2627 Comfort Hill Rd
Wellsburg, NY 14894

Rumor has it that our company will be used for out-post duty. This will be good. Asof today we have 17 registered."

If you've never fallen in with us but want to go, let me know and we'll make it happen.

On a separate note, I had lunch with the CEO of OSV the other week. Let me know if I can help facilitate anything (assuming it makes sense for both OSV and reenactors of course). Can't guarantee anything but I don't mind helping given that I have few talents in other areas. ;)

Gents,
If you haven't been, Genessee/Mumford is a fun place.  The village is really neat, and unlike Sturbridge you can run around the whole place as you please.  The last time I was there they also gave out raw foodstuffs for rations.  If you're free and looking for a fun, albeit mainstream event, check it out.

I realize this is a bit last minute, but are there any campaigner units
attending the Woodbury, CT event on August 14-16 that wouldn't mind an extra
private falling in with them?
