DATABASES : ACADEMIC RESEARCH : LIBRARY: ONLINE CATALOGS AND OPACS: Google
Scholar and Libraries

To preface the current remarks, here is a previous post of mine regarding
Google and its relationship with OCLC owners of the searching service
First Search and the international online catalog database WorldCat not to
mention the full text book collection NetLibrary.

OCLC Project Opens WorldCat Records to Google

"October 27, 2003 OCLC has announced to its library members that it will
begin testing the opening of WorldCat records to Google access. The
project will extract a 2 million record subset from the more than 53
million records in the WorldCat database. The subset will target the most
popular and widely available books by only selecting records with a
minimum of 100 libraries holding each item. Searches on Google will
retrieve the records and link through OCLC to library holdings. The move
expands the scope of the Open WorldCat yearlong pilot project to make
library resources available from non-library Web sites and will test the
effectiveness of Web search engines in guiding users to library-owned
materials. (Details for potential participants can be found at
http://www.oclc.org/worldcat/pilot/default.htm .) The Google/OCLC
connection should be active by mid- to late November.

Over 12,000 academic, public, and school libraries that have contributed
holding records or cataloging information to OCLC will automatically
participate in the program. Corporate library collections will not be
assumed to participate."

Worldcat
<http://www.oclc.org/worldcat/>

"WorldCat is a worldwide union catalog created and maintained collectively
by more than 9,000 member institutions. With millions of online records
built from the bibliographic and ownership information of contributing
libraries, it is the largest and most comprehensive database of its kind.

WorldCat is the foundation of many OCLC services that let your library
process, manage and share information resources and let your users search
for and obtain them.

52 million quality records and counting
WorldCat-listed resources span thousands of years and nearly every form of
human expression. Records exist for everything from stone tablets to
electronic books, wax recordings to MP3s, DVDs and Web sites. Whether an
item is physical or digitally preserved, popular or one-of-a-kind, the
integrity of its record is maintained by the input of cataloging members,
our standards and quality control.

Built by catalogers around the globe, WorldCat is the leading
bibliographic database in the world, providing libraries with an extensive
and rich source of cataloging records. This resource increases efficiency
by ensuring a high hit rate for materials of all formats."

The RLG organization that also has an international database of books and
other materials online that is free that was the subject of a past NetGold
post.

The announcement about OCLC in the above post led to a useful service in
Google, Worldcat records for many books could be found amongst Google
search results for a book title or when a book listing was a search result
of a Google search. The Worldcat link from Google enabled one to find
a list of libraries in the multistate region of a zip code entered by the
person who followed the Google search result link to the Worldcat search
interface.

Now that Google Scholar has been released and made available to the
public, the other show has dropped in the Google relationship with OCLC's
Worldcat.

In this post of a little while ago about Google Scholar, I provided sample
search results.

Scholar Results 1 - 10 of about 5,970 for afghanistan and women.

Amongst the shown and other results were some articles and some books.

Here is one book result:

BOOK] Veiled Courage: Inside the Afghan Womens Resistance - Library Search
- Web Search
C Benard, C Benard - Cited by 3
New York: Broadway Books, 2002

Please notice in this search result the hyperlink "Library Search"

Clicking on this link produces this record:

Type: English : Book : Non-fiction
Publisher: New York : Broadway Books, 2002.
ISBN: 0767913019

Links: Publisher description Table of contents

It also in a dialog box on the right hand side provides these options:

TEMPLE UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES
Available for this title:
OCLC FirstSearch
Search the catalog at Temple University Libraries
Request item

The OCLC controlled link, I suspect this is the case, is able from ISP
recognition, I again believe, to determine that I am using a Temple
University computer and gives me Temple Appropriate options for finding
this book from that dialog box that I have pasted immediately above this
paragraph.

Selecting the search Temple Libraries Catalog option shows that Temple
does not own the book by linking to the Temple Catalog and performing the
search. The search done is of the ISBN number for the book.

This list continues and covers about eight nearby states as well as the

If I click on the link for one of the library names in the above list that

cases to that library's online catalog and the record for that book is
shown. Here is what results when Haverford Library, for example is

Author Benard, Cheryl, 1953-
Title Veiled courage : inside the Afghan women's resistance / Cheryl
Benard in cooperation with Edit Schlaffer
Publisher New York : Broadway Books, c2002
Edition 1st ed
Descript 293 p., [8] p. of plates : ill. (chiefly col.) ; 22 cm
Summary "In Afghanistan under Taliban rule, women were forbidden to work
or go to school, they could not leave their homes without a male chaperone
and they could not be seen without a head-to-toe covering called the
burqa. A woman's slightest infractions were met with brutal public
beatings. That is why it is both appropriate and incredible that the sole
effective civil resistance to Taliban rule was made by women. Veiled
Courage reveals the remarkable bravery and spirit of the women of the
Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan (RAWA), whose daring
clandestine activities defied the forces of the Taliban and earned the
world's fierce admiration." "If caught, any RAWA activist would have faced
sure death. Yet they persisted. With the overthrow of the Taliban now a
reality, RAWA faces a new challenge: defeating the powers of Islamic
fundamentalism of which the Taliban are only one face and helping build a
society in which women are guaranteed full human rights." "Cheryl Benard,
an American sociologist and longtime adviser to RAWA, uses her inside
access to write the first behind-the-scenes story of RAWA and its
remarkably brave women. Veiled Courage will change the way Americans think
of Afghanistan, casting its people and its future in a new, more hopeful
light."--BOOK JACKET
